2020 Lexus GX Review: The Perfect Luxury SUV?

- Sandwiched between time spent with the Audi Q8 and BMW X7, two of the newest premium SUVs on the market, it’s obvious that the Lexus GX is more than a little long in the tooth. After all, it was introduced in its current form a decade ago, with only two mild updates over the years, one of which is new for 2020. That means the bulk of this thing dates back to Barack Obama’s first year as president of the United States. All of which to say, it got me thinking: Is there still a place for an outdated SUV like this Lexus?

9 months into owning a GX2016 and i love everything about it , it is a joy to drive , takes you everywhere . I live in Michigan and i invested in a snow tires this season , WOW just WOW , it cuts into snow like a piece of cake . I am a single guy , i bought this car because i KNEW it is a luxurious TOYOTA LandCruiser (Prado) and i planned to take a serious advantages of that !! however people asks me : why a single guy would by a " soccer mom" SUV !!!!? I just smile back .. people have NO idea .
I’m in the same boat. I haven’t purchased yet, but single guy looking at purchasing one after I’ve realized their capability.
Same. I have a 2017 (stock with A/T tires), and people always give me strange looks when we cross paths on rough forest roads miles from any pavement. All my friends laughed when they saw my "soccer mom" car at first, but after seeing what it can do, and luxuriously at that, they all want one. There's nothing better than getting a beautiful Lexus covered in mud and dirt.
It's not a soccer mom vehicles at all. It's a manly vehicle that shows, owned by a guy who could support himself and still engaged it activities.
This 54 year old single guy purchased a 2021 GX 460.
Why a sign guy would buy a "soccer mom" SUV?
because the guy is a smart automobile consumer.
I’m in my 40’s and I drive a 2020 Lexus GX460. BUT, I realize I am not the typical target market for this vehicle. I do not know of very many 40 somethings who drive this car. NONE of my friends drive this car. Most of the people I see at my Lexus dealership (when I go for an oil change) are much older than me. So, I think Apple car play, and other tech-y upgrades are non-issues for the majority of the people who drive this car. I can’t see my grandma whining about not having Apple CarPlay in her Lexus 😂. I bought this car because of previous experience with the brand, its reliability, and excellent retail value. I did not buy it for speed or good gas mileage.
In the same boat. In my 40's and don't give a damn about the tech. I like the old school feel and the luxurious interior. Some folks like it old school. Definitely buying one.
Donnell Newman Jr. I am in my 30s and don’t give a damn about the tech and mpg. The only two things I want are comfort and reliability .
This 54 year old guy totally agrees! I purchased a 2021 GX 460.
Just bought an used 2020 gx460 luxury for 68k$ CAD. The best purchase so far. The ride is smooth, can't hear any wind noise at high speed, great visibility, enough power to tow 6500lbs. Very versatile!
Thanks for sharing!
I just want to tell all of you who maybe on the fence about the lack of updating the tech features/gear on the GX, I just bought a ‘21, and am on cloud 9...
I feel like I have a Gulf Stream Jet on the road.
Smooth as silk, all the power you really ever need,
And Probably the ABSOLUTE BEST all around suv ride available on the market today.
Not to mention the bullet proof mechanical reliability, that European brands don’t even bother mentioning....And the resale VALUE.... :).
My mom took her BMW x5 for a trade with a Lexus GX460. She got tired of having to deal with the I-drive system. She just wanted an SUV that works well and does the job perfectly well without all the technology fuss and malfunctions.
Congrats! I traded in a 2017 BMW X5 for a 2021 GX 460.
I love the GX460... I plan to sell my Grand Cherokee for this.
I may not be the target demographic (early 30's single male with no kids), but I bought a 2017 for its reliability, off-road/inclement weather capabilities, and its comfort on long road trips (in that order). Very few vehicles that I cross shopped had lots of tech features (4Runner, Tacoma, older Land Cruisers, etc). Though I would have loved CarPlay and a better infotainment system, it just wasn't a huge factor for me in the long run. It's all about priorities I guess.
Great review and drive test. The 2022 model has infotainment update, and these SUVs are hard to get. I put a deposit for a black line edition. Hoping to get it in a month or two.
Buyers like this Lexus the way it is. Research done by consumer reports points out that buyers of this Lexus place reliability , comfort, user friendly, low maintenance cost, offroad capabilities very high on their list for buying this Lexus GX460. Buyers were not looking for driving dynamic or modern technology and connectivity.
I traded an exciting 2017 BMW X5 for a boring 2021 Lexus GX 460. Guess which will last longer and is less expensive to maintain? Also, I DON’T NEED apple or android CAR PLAY!
for some reason, aesthetics are very important for videos. I only 'Like" this GX. If Lexus would've given you a better color to test and review on....then that would've made me "Love" the Gx. lol
Gas is cheap nowadays and it will be for a while while we recover from COVID-19 so go ahead buy one right now enjoy it. Please help the oil refineries workers survive.
You didn’t mention the cool box with the executive package
That's only Canadian version. Not in U.S.
I have the gx460 2019
The GX isn't all that big. It's a midsize SUV that is about the same size as the Toyota Highlander and 4 door Wrangler.
Thanks for sharing!
you guys have this as a bargain in canada, in my country it costs freaking an equivalent of 161,000 cad
Just bought an gx460 luxury trim (2020) with 23000km for 68000$. Pretty good deals, brand new is 80000$!
@@JoeGX460 ye pretty good, some cars are trading higher used than new cause of the semiconductor shortage car makers are facing
@@JoeGX460 We bought our 2021 GX with the sport package brand new for $57k US out the door (taxes and fees included).
Love this car to much
Love it
I 💕this SUV
Тойота точно раньше делала швейные машинки? Мне больше кажется утюги ;)
I love this car.
Please update Apple car player for GX
Base is 53K. Not what u said cmon
He said in Canadian $$$ .
Annoying background music
The infotainment and the engine badly need an update for 85k
Daniel Plainview Thanks for watching, Daniel! I agree wholeheartedly about the infotainment system, but that 4.6L is part of what makes the GX so great!
Dan Ilika the engine is great from a reliability perspective but for not a particularly large or powerful SUV you’d be hurting pretty bad to daily drive that in Vancouver where premium gas is the equivalent of 5+ dollars per gallon!
Do you buy a land cruiser or LX at that price point?
With this car just buy a certified used one for 35-40k
Give me a RR Sport or loaded Defender for the money. Or even an LC though it needs an upgrade. Just can't deal with the Lexus body cladding and front end.
ktpinnacle Thanks for watching! I’m hopeful about the new Defender, but until I drive it I can’t say that it’s the better vehicle. The Range Rover Sport is a great vehicle, but it’s got a very different appeal.
Like most, the issue of RR unreliability is a roadblock. Especially to a buy and hold guy like me.
Crappy new, AMAZING used.
Biggest flaws are extremely outdated interior, tiny poor resolution display, non digital gauges, and very slow to accelerate. Design could also be better
Don’t forget this car is premium fuel required
Average around 15.7mpg on mine 😭
just dont get it with those 19 inch rims.
I think it should be V6 Turbo with at least 8 speed. I was think to buy this one but I bought GLS.
Boy did you need to do more homework on it, wrong on many points. You've cut short the best features and were whiney on the tech garbage. We didn't buy these for the tech garbage lol!
The biggest Lexus polluter.
Captain Carter, you forgot the LX
Take a hike. ULEV's don't even come close to the actual issue of mining and air traffic. You want to solve the world's biggest issues go deal with that first. You fools always like to slap a bandaid on a leaking dam in the form of regs on the little guy while multi billion dollar companies continue to cause large scale pollution issues that go unaddressed.
@@d1sturb3d119 Epstein didn't kill himself either!
I agree, MPG is same as LX. But none is capable of the beaten trails like this with luxury and climb like a goat. Affordable GX rocks but if you want just a little more, there's the LX.
A poor man's LX 570.
Ugh wtf? Poor man...more like liveable LX570. You've ever driven the LX eh
@@Mike-cz2yw: yes, proud owner of a 2020 LX 570, a 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser and a 2013 Toyota Sienna Limited AWD. So, yeah, I drive them just about everyday. Love my 5.7s and 3.5.
I love the LX, but I’d argue this is far more practical for daily use.
I own a GX, and agree with Dick. If I have more money, I will definitely get a LC200 or LX570.
@@zmhd1987, just kidding. The GX is wonderful, too.
Lexus has no shame asking $85k for a lexury car with no android auto in 2020. Cringy to the max.
