great video. You actually included showing the coolant transfer tube (the metal pipe between water pump housing and thermostat). That O-Ring on the end of the tube by the water pump housing actually fails and drips/leaks quite often, causing people to replace a water pump when all they need to do is pull that pipe and replace the O ring on the end of that tube. Great video

By far the best video to change a bad water pump, and to recommend to use magnectic sockets for 10 mil. bolts,Good Job!!!

Best video I found on a very difficult task. I also recommend the 6616 adapter and the magnetic 1/4" 10mm sicket is also an excellent idea

What about stuffing a clean shop rag around the water pump gear to close the gap and prevent bolts or sockets from falling inside the cover? Seems like it would work...just remember to remove before closing up the access hole! I plan on replacing my pump as well, however I will probably have the cover off since I will be checking/replacing the chains and guides.

Better of the videos I’ve seen on this. I just did an 11 Equinox. Wish I would have watched this one first. Seems like less rooms to dicker around in engine bay of equinox. Had to drop 1st Cat down Pope off manifold also. Other than that same procedure. Would be quicker if I had a lift vice jackstands. Shoulda pulled drain plug in pump side of Tsat to drain there before pulling hoses. Yes get magnetic sockets. I didn’t drop any screws in timing cover but almost did. I had the same lisle sprocket tool. I would get the OTC for next time if I do again. Need to use distilled water when refilling coolant system to take out minerals that can cause scaling. Also need to flush or replace with the correct coolant periodically to keep the PH down in system and some coolant is more compatible with aluminum. These reasons cause the pitting seen on surfaces when pulled apart.

Good attitude you have my friend ! I get mad just thinking about the job.
My wife has a 2.4 eco tech so I'll be doing this job one day but I won't have your attitude.
    Stay cool I like that.

9.3.16. Thanks for the tip on which water pump sprocket tool to purchase & the reason why!......OTC 6616 is a better design. 👍🏽. Detroit Redwings! 🏒

The Fel Pro gasket kit DOES come with the seal for the thermostat housing to head mounting. It is a seal with the small nubs on it and is a circle shaped. It conforms to the housing groove as you press it in and the nubs hold it in position.

If I remember correctly there is still a gap between the gear and pump but by all means give it a shot if you think it's doable

  • @daveandmelissa1

A rag could certainly be helpful but if the bolt dropped you may have to remove retaining tool to get at it otherwise good suggestion and better than nothing . If my memory serves me when I looked at it, removing the cover seemed to require pulling the engine...in that case you don't need retaining tool or any of the above procedure. If you do end up servicing chain and guides please post video for us ...thank you.

not required but dropping subframe sure would make it easier. i love subframes can drop and remove subframe engine and all from under a car with just a 2ton engine hoist in an hour.

Take some string and tape to your tools. Therefore, if you drop the tool, you can pull it right out.

Nice job I have 2003 Pontiac Sunfire with 2.2 Ecotech I'm sure I will have to do this job. Thanks for the info. What was the total time involved with this pump?

Ten hours. I did unbolt the exhaust manifold, it really makes getting the water flow pipe in and out easier.

The instructions state I have to remove the exhaust manifold. I have a 2006 Saturn Ion.

Hmm. If I remember correctly mine came of fairly easily .. i know you likeky have, but double check the bolts again then try gently tapping the side of the pump .

There 2x 15mm bolts on the front side. One at top. One at bottom... The bottom will not come out. Unless you drop the motor...

Super Glue them 3 bolts onto the sockets or use tape... They get down in there. The timing cover has to come off....
I just did one of these today.. That half moon lock down tool. Needs to be installed across the bottom Horizontal. It stops the bolts from falling in.

Terrible design, isn't it? Much the same isues with a 1999 pontiac grand am. A garage wanted to charge a friend $1000 to replace the water pump because of the sheer amount of work involved, so I'm helping out. They really need to get a clue and power it off the the serpentine belt like other makes of cars :)
