Nick Lytle from Navarre Kayak Fishing reviewed the Hobie Lynx He took it into the Gulf of Mexico. Surf was minimal. It's a wet ride, it's light and carves turns. He stood up to test stability, he jumped into the water, got back on easily. He reports that transporting the Lynx across sand is nice due to its light weight. Thank you for your review. The Hobie Lynx is more ridged because it is not hollow. It has a foam core wrapped with fiberglass reinforcement completely filling the hull. Stiffer boat, with minimal weight gain.
Exactly! It's a light fiberglass over foam with a thermoplastic armor. My concern would be water getting in between the plastic and fiberglass, adding to weight and potentially freeze damage or smells. I prefer hollow with inspection ports. I also prefer the recycle abilities of the Pelican or some of Hobbies other products.
If you can afford it, the Hobie adds important features and refinement. For me reverse and kick up fins were a must. Also, can't imagine having a rudder that can't be deployed and retrieved from the seat. It's amazing how much weeds catch on rudders. That said, the Pelican is an amazing value.
The pelican drive can do reverse simply by taking it out and turn it 180 degrees and drop it back in. Now it will propel in reverse, once clear flip it around and you’re back to forward
@tribalncgaming1091 you must fish waters where weeds don't build up on the rudder. Where I go, a rudder full of weeds that can't be cleared is a deal breaker. The kick up fins are also hugely beneficial. Was out with a friend who has an older Hobie and his fins hit a rock and disabled the drive. As I wrote, the Pelican is a great value, but it has to work in the waters you fish.

Very nice review and comparison. The Hydryve from Pelican comes from factory really taut so you have to loosen the bolts which will make it a lot smoother and easier to peddle.
Yeah I just found that out on mine. It pedal so hard, it’d wear you out in less then a minute, got home and loosened the orange cables and it’s so easy now, can pedal it all day now no problem. Loosen those cables ppl, loosen the cables.
One feature I notice that wasn't mentioned in your video... the Hobie Lynx has dedicated provision to accommodate a transducer under the hull for fish finder. Also, the Power Pole anchor mounting ability.
Many thanks for the review, I am very tall and was trying to decide between these two. Your commentary on the peddle adjustments drove me to the Lynx. Ended up buying one (2024) and very happy with my decision. Plenty of adjustment to the peddles for someone 6'5". Would have been nice to have a lower price but best to have something I know would fit me and also have reverse is nice as well.
Curious about getting back on the Lynx if the user falls or jumps off. Looks like it would be easy given the low-to-the-water line gunnels. Excellent video that happens to show, pretty much, the differences in price and quality between $1,200 and $2,700 price points. To me, both manufacturers hit their target. BTW, the Lynx has less flex because the hull is multilayer over a solid core.... very well engineered for high strength and durability and low weight.
That's a good question! I would agree; it seems like it would be fairly easy to re-enter given how flat the deck is, and how stable the boat itself is. Thanks for watching!
The Hobie Lynx also is set to accept a Fish Finder with the battery/transducer access compartment under the seat. For me as a sport fisherman having features like the reverse on the drive, power pole anchor mounting, and fish finder are important.
You forgot to mention that the Lynx rudder assembly is removable. That is one reason for the difference between the empty weights, and weight is a big deal with me. Note also that the Hobie drive has the option of installing turbo fins. One issue I have with the Lynx is there is a lot of hull noise at speed, and even light chop gives a lot hull slap noise whether you are moving or not.
The lynx increased significantly in price over a year now retails for $3k it was supposed to be entry level Hobie now it’s cost as much as the Outback.
Just an update on pricing: the Lynx is now 3k ( up $300) and pelican is 1k ( down $200). Go figure. Do u want 3 pelicans or one lynx?. I have views most videos on the pelican and No one complained about the flex in the middle. I have been eyeing both and now leaning towards pelican. Black Friday specials for pelican includes a free 10ft inflatable sup. Too good of a deal to pass up.
I would like to see someone do an updated review side-by-side comparison, sense this review, Hobie has increased Lynx's price to $3,300 while I have seen the Gataway for under $1,000. In addition, the Hobie has been shown to be very fragile, getting holes in the bottom of the haul is very common, while on the Pelican after correcting the problem with the original drive, I have not seen anything of the haul failing

I hate to be “that guy” but how do they Paddle? I have days where paddling is painful and days when peddling is not so great, or I fatigue easier than I think I will. How well do they function at paddle only?
I like the Lynx. But, at the new price, you'll be lucky to get a new Lynx on the water for less than $4,000 once you pay the market price, shipping, and add a few basic things like an H-Rail upgrade and protection for that very delicate hull. At 1/3 the price, the Pelican Getaway isn't the Lynx's' competition, the Hobie Outback is. Or a Hobie Compass with $1,400 in accessories. That doesn't make any sense, even if you do have a lot of money.
Just a suggestion I would have found it interesting to start your video with the two boats upside down to compare the hull construction! Where the water meets the boat!
I appreciate the feedback; I did shoot a comparison in hull design as part of this video, and even after editing as much as I could out it made the video about 15 minutes longer, and it really just felt too long - especially when most folks only care about how the hull design impacts how the boat performs on the water. The gist is that they are actually very similar design ideas, but the features on the Pelican are more defined. Good to know that folks are interested in hull design for future comparisons.
You gotta loosen the cables on the pelican HDll, out of the box from company the cables are so tight you can barely pedal them for a couple mins without being worn out. Loosen the orange cables

That was a good comparison between the Pelican and the Hobie kayaks. But I do have a question? On Both of the kayak do the straps come off the pedal? I am a little on the big side but not much & i have big very chubby very fat wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very fat wide toe that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. It's a very wide foot. The last time I tried to fit my foot through those stripes I could only fit three toes in the straps which was very discomfort because the strap was caught between my third and fourth toe. & #2. Are the pedals wide enough for a foot that is 6 1/2 inches wide. Oh I saw you was pedal ing barefooted 👣. How comfortable was that cuz that's how I have to kayak is barefooted 👣 because of my foot & toes being very fat and wide. I am very interesting in buying a pedal drive kayak because I have a bad shoulder too and I think a pedal drive would work well for me. Do you have any advice on this or have you had any customer with a wide foot to demo a kayak & any problems because of them having a wide foot? I never thought that having a very extremely wide foot with fat wide toe that are equally straight across would cause so much problems for kayaking. I would appreciate any advice that would help. Great questions! 1) Yes, the straps are removable on both drives. 2) I've never seen anyone with a 6.5" wide foot use them, but I can't imagine why not, HOWEVER, I would think it might actually be more comfortable to pedal WITH shoes on if you have wider feet since your foot might overhang a bit. Essentially a shoe with a rigid sole could act as an extension of the pedal if the pedal is too small, kinda like clip in cycling shoes have super rigid soles that clip into tiny pedals.

LOL that is what everybody is saying they had never seen a foot that is 6.5") inches wide. I get stopped and asked all the time is that your regular foot width? & i say yes & and then they ask how wide is my foot , how fat are my toes , how did I get my toes to be so straight across? I know they are used to seeing toes that are at a 45 degree angle & When they see my toes being straight across it stands out and definitely get your attention especially when my toes are very fat & wide. I can not find a shoe that will fit my wide foot. My foot outgrew shoes , socks , boots 33 years ago so i have to do things either barefooted 👣 or in flip flops which barely and I mean barely fits my foot because of my toes being too fat & wide & being straight across which makes my toes wider then the flip flops straps which really sucks. I lost two pairs of flip-flops last summer so I just went back to kayaking Barefooted 👣 again. I really do appreciate your advice. Thank you I will look into that maybe I might get lucky. Nice comparison of the 2 , they both look great , have heard the Lynx is a bit fragile on the outer shell , Probably pass on that since I do rivers. The Riot Mako 10 Versa looks interesting as it will take either a fin drive or prop drive.
You've "heard this is fragile" - probably from a traditionalist who baulks at anything different. I own a lynx, 99.9% of my fishing is in local rivers, rivers so shallow that there are dozens of places I have to get out and walk my yak thru as it is only 2-3" deep. No issues with this yak and have never regretted buying it. BTW, I hit rocks, trees, everything, and no problems, scratches, yes, but any yak does that. This is the best yak for river fishing mainly bc of the power-pole setup. Power pole is perfect for a river bc have you ever tried to work an anchor in a yak?? Have you ever tried to fish a river without a power pole, "there's a great spot, but I only get 1 cast because the current blows me on by" - I push my keyfob, power-pole deployed and fish on!. Hope this helps
Just saying Wally world sells paddles starting at 10 bucks for the cheapo plastic aluminum and a 15 dollar wooden one as an emergency backup they are good to have.
@@mnthaus on which model? For the Getaway absolutely yes, for the Lynx you should still be good. My wife is 5 feet even, also quite short, she has a Revolution 13 which I use from time to time and I'm on the same pedal length with this revo as I was on the Lynx. That means there's plenty of room for someone much shorter!

@@mnthaus I see! Yeah, they don't have multiple seat mounting positions since the drive adjustment range is so broad. I've seen small kids pedaling adult sized Hobie's before, they really build them to fit a wide variety of folks.
Sorry it took so long for me to respond; Pelican has varying warranty periods based on the build of the boat, so I wanted to get clarification from them first. Pelican offers a limited lifetime warranty on their TST kayak(twin sheet thermoformed; which is what the Getaway is). Keep in mind this is of course limited to defects, not damage. The lifetime warranty applies to the hull only - all of the accessories such as the seat, drive, etc have a one year warranty. Hobie's warranty is three years, which covers everything included with the kayak.
Does anyone know if the Hobie Mirage 180 drive will work in the Pelican? Looking for a cheaper yak to throw on top of truck rack. My Hobie Outback is too heavy.
The recommended weight capacity on the Lynx is 350, so you should actually be good. Even so, I would recommend going for something with a higher weight capacity if you can. The Pro Angler 14 would be much more forgiving, though it is of course more expensive and heavier.
I have a lynx, the outside hull material is soft and abrades easily on concrete or sharp rocks. I find i have to handle it carefully, like its a glass boat. No rubbing on anything.
"not made for going out in the ocean" yeah I guess thats the reality for both of these Yaks, designed for lakes only. Unless anybody has taken either to salt water on relatively calm days. Hobie is over priced but the better model. nice review, just get a blimp for your mic, solves the problem
Have you ever bought a car and then wish you had the higher priced model, with heated seats, remote start and all wheel drive......that's why you buy the Lynx, nothing worse than cruising down a river and regretting that you saved a few.
Reports of the Hobie Lynx cracking and opening up the hull and people having to DIY repairs is a joke when you pay that much money. I've owned 3 Hobies and still currently own 2 and IMO, Hobie how really gone downhill in the past few years with their quality and workmanship
The Lynx is a foam core fiberglass epoxy and then plastic covered surfboard. Light weight like a surfboard with some cosmetic damage protection from the plastic armor. But, still easy for drops or collisions to damage it like a surfboard. It's not for rough rocky rivers plastic boats like to bang around in. Realistically, the hull is very easy to epoxy and micro bubble fill any damage to the hull. Easier to fix than a cracked plastic rotoform hull. The Lynx is my third Hobie and it seems high quality like the rest.
Get a paddle kayak, much cheaper! I admit I'm wanting a pedal drive and I'm getting where i can afford one, but I caught lots of fish on my Tarpon 120! Of course with a pedal drive you can fish while you move.
The number one reason the Lynx is more expensive if the Hobie name on the side. Same reason you pay more for a Cadillac over a Chevrolet or a Lincoln over a Ford. Not necessarily better just paying for the prestige of the name. There are a ton of kayaks out there that perform just as well as Hobie for half the price.
That is a generic statement that applies less to Hobbie than 99.9% of products. Hobbies are designed to a higher price point by smart costly people. They use more expensive tooling and pay more attention to smaller details. The fact that the best competition is designed to their expired patents confirms their cost is for innovation.

I’m with you on the fin steer, if you hit something that pushes it up, you have to get out or climb back or reach back with a paddle.

Price increases are due to ongoing inflation. Have you noticed the price of everything going up ?

My local dealer will not even take an order on a Hobie Lynx for 2020. They said that maybe Hobie will be taking orders again in 2021.

The Lynx doesn’t have a clip. It has a bungee w/ ball for holding the paddle right next to the forward seat strap.

How comfortable was that cuz that's how I have to kayak is barefooted 👣 because of my foot & toes being very fat and wide. I am very interesting in buying a pedal drive kayak because I have a bad shoulder too and I think a pedal drive would work well for me. Do you have any advice on this or have you had any customer with a wide foot to demo a kayak & any problems because of them having a wide foot? I never thought that having a very extremely wide foot with fat wide toe that are equally straight across would cause so much problems for kayaking. I would appreciate any advice that would help. 1) Yes, the straps are removable on both drives.
2) I've never seen anyone with a 6.5" wide foot use them, but I can't imagine why not, HOWEVER, I would think it might actually be more comfortable to pedal WITH shoes on if you have wider feet since your foot might overhang a bit. Essentially a shoe with a rigid sole could act as an extension of the pedal if the pedal is too small, kinda like clip in cycling shoes have super rigid soles that clip into tiny pedals.

LOL that is what everybody is saying they had never seen a foot that is 6.5") inches wide. I get stopped and asked all the time is that your regular foot width? & i say yes & and then they ask how wide is my foot , how fat are my toes , how did I get my toes to be so straight across? I know they are used to seeing toes that are at a 45 degree angle & When they see my toes being straight across it stands out and definitely get your attention especially when my toes are very fat & wide. I can not find a shoe that will fit my wide foot. My foot outgrew shoes , socks , boots 33 years ago so i have to do things either barefooted 👣 or in flip flops which barely and I mean barely fits my foot because of my toes being too fat & wide & being straight across which makes my toes wider then the flip flops straps which really sucks. I lost two pairs of flip-flops last summer so I just went back to kayaking Barefooted 👣 again. I really do appreciate your advice. Thank you I will look into that maybe I might get lucky. Yep! I'm in super shallow water at those points in the video and the kickup fins are kicking up and popping back down.

Nice comparison of the 2 , they both look great , have heard the Lynx is a bit fragile on the outer shell , Probably pass on that since I do rivers. The Riot Mako 10 Versa looks interesting as it will take either a fin drive or prop drive.
You've "heard this is fragile" - probably from a traditionalist who baulks at anything different. I own a lynx, 99.9% of my fishing is in local rivers, rivers so shallow that there are dozens of places I have to get out and walk my yak thru as it is only 2-3" deep. No issues with this yak and have never regretted buying it. BTW, I hit rocks, trees, everything, and no problems, scratches, yes, but any yak does that. This is the best yak for river fishing mainly bc of the power-pole setup. Power pole is perfect for a river bc have you ever tried to work an anchor in a yak?? Have you ever tried to fish a river without a power pole, "there's a great spot, but I only get 1 cast because the current blows me on by" - I push my keyfob, power-pole deployed and fish on!. Just saying Wally world sells paddles starting at 10 bucks for the cheapo plastic aluminum and a 15 dollar wooden one as an emergency backup they are good to have.

In the last container of boats Hobie got (the Lynx is not made in the US) they only had Papaya, going to be a bit of a wait for Dunes.

@@mnthaus on which model? For the Getaway absolutely yes, for the Lynx you should still be good. My wife is 5 feet even, also quite short, she has a Revolution 13 which I use from time to time and I'm on the same pedal length with this revo as I was on the Lynx. That means there's plenty of room for someone much shorter!
@@NextAdventurePDX I'm most interested in a pair of the Hobie Lynx. I thought it would be interesting if they would offer a second, forward mount position of the seat-base clip. If it's not necessary, then fine, but I would like it to be a comfortable reach for her.
@@mnthaus I see! Yeah, they don't have multiple seat mounting positions since the drive adjustment range is so broad. I've seen small kids pedaling adult sized Hobie's before, they really build them to fit a wide variety of folks.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond; Pelican has varying warranty periods based on the build of the boat, so I wanted to get clarification from them first. Pelican offers a limited lifetime warranty on their TST kayak(twin sheet thermoformed; which is what the Getaway is). Keep in mind this is of course limited to defects, not damage. The lifetime warranty applies to the hull only - all of the accessories such as the seat, drive, etc have a one year warranty.
Hobie's warranty is three years, which covers everything included with the kayak.

It’s not, the pedals are adjustable to move them closer or farther from the seat.
Does anyone know if the Hobie Mirage 180 drive will work in the Pelican? Looking for a cheaper yak to throw on top of truck rack. My Hobie Outback is too heavy.
Yes I believe they are compatible. Saw a video somewhere that someone used a 180 drive on the pelican and it fit perfectly.

The recommended weight capacity on the Lynx is 350, so you should actually be good. Even so, I would recommend going for something with a higher weight capacity if you can. The Pro Angler 14 would be much more forgiving, though it is of course more expensive and heavier.

The Hobie ACE-TEC construction is very different and more robust than Pelican's thermoforming.
I have a lynx, the outside hull material is soft and abrades easily on concrete or sharp rocks. I find i have to handle it carefully, like its a glass boat. No rubbing on anything.

Have you ever bought a car and then wish you had the higher priced model, with heated seats, remote start and all wheel drive......that's why you buy the Lynx, nothing worse than cruising down a river and regretting that you saved a few.
That Hobie now cost 3300 and you can find the Pelican for under 1000, is the Hobie really 3 times better

Reports of the Hobie Lynx cracking and opening up the hull and people having to DIY repairs is a joke when you pay that much money.
I've owned 3 Hobies and still currently own 2 and IMO, Hobie how really gone downhill in the past few years with their quality and workmanship
The Lynx is a foam core fiberglass epoxy and then plastic covered surfboard. Light weight like a surfboard with some cosmetic damage protection from the plastic armor. But, still easy for drops or collisions to damage it like a surfboard. It's not for rough rocky rivers plastic boats like to bang around in. Realistically, the hull is very easy to epoxy and micro bubble fill any damage to the hull. Easier to fix than a cracked plastic rotoform hull. The Lynx is my third Hobie and it seems high quality like the rest.

Get a paddle kayak, much cheaper! I admit I'm wanting a pedal drive and I'm getting where i can afford one, but I caught lots of fish on my Tarpon 120! Of course with a pedal drive you can fish while you move.

The number one reason the Lynx is more expensive if the Hobie name on the side. Same reason you pay more for a Cadillac over a Chevrolet or a Lincoln over a Ford. Not necessarily better just paying for the prestige of the name. There are a ton of kayaks out there that perform just as well as Hobie for half the price.
Maybe, but I don't know of any that are this light and have all the features. I don't want to hoist a 90lb kayak on the roof of the Jeep!
That is a generic statement that applies less to Hobbie than 99.9% of products. Hobbies are designed to a higher price point by smart costly people. They use more expensive tooling and pay more attention to smaller details.
The fact that the best competition is designed to their expired patents confirms their cost is for innovation.

You mentioned that the Pelican rudder can be deployed by using the paddle. But how can one pull it up when coming in to the shallow water where there may be damaging rocks? Would have liked to see this part of the testing.

Good question; the Getaway does because it's hollow. The Lynx has a solid, watertight foam core, so it doesn't have or need a drainplug.
