You're right not to use sealant before resin. It creates a sheened finish which compromises the adhesion. The bondo resin is just polyester resin with a bondo branding. Epoxy is more durable than poly. Poly is not ideal without the use of glass as it is very brittle and prone to cracking. That's where the glass comes in.
Mike, you kill it with your builds man! Great video my friend!! :)
The boat is looking really good 👍
The boat is looking great I might have to build a boat myself one day!
Awesome job man 💯
I binged watched the entire build. I love the first one I saw making the gunnels from square aluminum tubing. I have a 18 foot 4 inch Lincoln canoe manufactured in August of 1976 I am rebuilding and can not locate gunnels. I don't want wood. I want vinyl or aluminum but can't find anything long enough. I may have to do wood gunnels and seal the wood like you sealed the panels of the floor. Thank for sharing your creative genius.
Source 3/4 x .067 aluminum 6063 square tubing.
Man i love this build so much, from start to finish. I think you did an awesome job. I am from europ and its hard to find good quality alu decklids for a decent price wich is to bad. Thank you so much for sharing, i've learned so much watching your videos that i think it is time to try some of it out on my own little alu boat. From across the big pond somewhere in europ, greetings Mike.
Thank you very much!
Really like the setup it looks like I layed turf down a time or two lol great video really enjoyed it alot info keep them coming can't wait to c next one
Thanks 👍
Great work.
Thanks, Alan!
Great video editing while turfing the upper deck 👍
Thanks
Хорошая работа👍👍👍
If your holes for the deck screws are pre-drilled put some super glue inside the hole. It will soak into the wood and waterproof it. That's the only point of water getting in after the ply is resin coated. Make sure to get the thinnest super glue. Super glue is basically liquid acrylic plastic.
You just need a scour pad (Scotch Brite) to remove the amine blush. Taking the shine off is all that's required, a bit of soapy water helps lift the amine of the surface. Then wipe down with a wax grease remover. Don't use acetone, as it just pushes the amine around and flashes off too quick.
I'd like to see a layer of 200g biaxial cloth used each side of the deck material. You might even be able to reduce your ply thickness.
Your half way to using fibreglass 😉 might as well go the whole hog.
Good work 👍
Looking forward to testing…A+
In two days.
I made the mistake of using Bondo resin on my transom and water ended up getting under the resin when I was pressure washing the hull. I had to sand it all down and redo it. The vapors are much worse compared to epoxy. And it won’t set up in cold temperatures
a wallpaper seam roller might come in handy for pushing down the gator floor ck it out they are small in wood and metal.
You should check out MDO plywood sometime. It’s more like a marine grade with a paper like surface applied to the face so the grain doesn’t show.
I think the boat is looking great. If it was me for rod holders I'd look at something like MulTbar for the back. But I generally fish for catfish and not large mouth
I put t tracks in the back
Thats how mine is set up and its good.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 that thing is sick
Thanks!
Looks awesome. I was wondering to ship to Canada
We do. Email us at support@tbnation.net
Brilliant stuff I'm loving this boat can't wait to see it on the water if ye want to send it to me in Ireland 😊🤣ye can joking ye are legends there well done🙂🎣👍👌
Thank you sir!
wood soaked with resin becomes like a hybrid material.. wood has so many cavities that can hold resin. It becomes almost like a log of plastic externally
Great video guys. I will be getting a hold of you. I have bought an older Allumacraft Yukon Deep V. Not going to go too big. Maybe I will send some pictures and ask some questions before I order anything. 😎😎👍👍
How big is the deep V? Does it have the console or is it open?
@@chrisroberts3963 16feet open.
That makes a super nice platform
Fantastic! All our contact info is in the description of this video.
Ok lots of questions will the turf stick to diamond plate or will that cause problems
2 ) ok it’s been a while since I bought aluminum but is it really cheaper to buy the plywood and the sealer vs just buying aluminum ? I mean I guess you can look at your time as cheep or expensive as you want but really your time is worth something when it comes to all the extra work sealing the wood
You will need that heated seat in February 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think Bondo is polyester not epoxy. Both use a hardener.
The bondo epoxy resin doesn’t penetrate into the wood at all. I’ve got to redo some things on my boat because of it and the fact that I don’t have a covered area to work on it. I’ll send you some pictures and video to messenger if you want the footage.
Thanks man! I stuck your jigs into the boat fish them on opening day.
I'm looking to replace the old carpeting in my grandpa's 1960s Cruise Craft with Hydro Turf. I'm nervous about applying it to the original plywood that is already painted.
If it’s gloss paint it will stick
its called a countersink drill bit.
Thank you for speaking up...ban it 😮
Bondo brand stuff seems to be hygroscopic, meaning it attracts water. I'd steer clear of bondo for a boat.
Good to know, thanks
I dream of having a little boat like that. Unfortunately, my budget won't allow it.
Try using 3M Yellow automotive/auto body tape
Much better than blue painters tape
Thanks
Do you know if hydro turf can be installed on top of vinyl decking. I’m specifically talking about The product that’s used on bass trackers when carpet isn’t used. I’m thinking of installing it on top and think the vinyl surrounding the edges would look sharp. Interested in your thoughts on that or if it’s likely to peel up.
You honestly could probably just wipe it down with alcohol and install the turf right on top if you get turf with adhesive.
Is the gator camo green colors ? Couldn't tell if it was greens or grays. Looking to buy some hydro turf I have charcoal carpet in other area's of the boat. I was thinking dark grey but that gator camo looks pretty good.
Green and black
We can use neopren glue for Hydroturf on wood? If we choose Hydroturf without adhesive ? Thank you for your video and advise! ;)
I honestly never use neoprene glue. Never know till you try. I personally would just do it the way the video is I know it’s a pain, but it works solid.
Hey, so as I was watching your video, I started to wonder whether I could skip the resin on the plywood part and use marine grade plywood instead? My understanding is that it would not absorb water, would could it still warp over time?
Marine, grade plywood is just supremely made plywood. It still needs to be preserved and sealed or it will fail.
@@TinyBoatNation great, thanks!
This is the way.......
Do these dark color foam decks get hot to the touch in the sun?
No! That’s what’s so awesome about them all!
so if you do use marine grade plywood, would you still resin coat it?
Yes
Are you saying "Fir rated" like as in Douglas fir plywood?
yes
Can you post a link? I can’t find any such thing.
Can we get an update on the Walmart cleats?
I would only use them for boeys or light use.
VERY GOOD HOW TO INSTALL THE SENIOR BOAT
Thanks!
What camera did you use for the video?

Question, if I’m pulling the carpet up , do I need to follow theses steps?
Carpet requires a different glue that doesn’t require all these additional steps. It’s actually a lot easier.
@@TinyBoatNation Hey thanks for the reply, sorry i worded it wrong, when i pull the carpet up do i need to apply these steps to make sure the eva foam sticks to the wood?
Is that Gator Camo Pattern? Thanks
Yea
Is the cost really less after all the materials for wood?
Now it is. Wood is cheap again
What is the length of this boat? I want a 20hp mercury!
13.5ft
do you sell that bilge pump hose holder??
It’s currently in production it’ll be available within a week or two
@@TinyBoatNation will it be announced via instagram story or just thrown on the website? I’ve been waiting for these!

Does the foam hold water? That’s what I hate about carpet
Nope! It’s awesome
You mentioned ok to use marine grade plywood and NOT pressure treated wood? I checked and was told marine grade plywood IS pressure treated wood??? Advice????
Treated wood is not marine-grade
You were told wrong. Marine grade plywood is just expensive plywood. Pressure treated wood has copper in it. Copper reacts with aluminum. The treated wood and aluminum eat eachother away. The wood will rot fast and it’ll eat the aluminum in your boat
Building a raised platform for console on saltwater fishing boat. Would you stay with aluminum for the platform Or would marine grade plywood with resin Be suitable for this application.
I would at least use aluminum for the framing
@@TinyBoatNation definitely aluminum framing, I meant the deck part? Also I have a lot of porpoising. It's a 19' G3. I have pontoons in back, jack plate w/ wedges. Adding a cavitation plate, and moving console and everything foward about 1.5 ft. There is no foam on hull of boat. What would be the best foam to use for hull? Trying to quiet it down while on wtr. And will all this help/stop this porpoising? Also adding a live bait well in front deck, for additional weight, any suggestions on what would be a good insulated bait well?
If tiny boat nation can install hydroturf on a wood deck,so can i
That is the idea!
Epoxy is superior with wood.
Yikes west systems epoxy is the worst ripoff known to man. You can buy armalite at hobby lobby for 1/4 of the price of west. Same shore d hardness, same tensile strength, same comprehensive strength.
Really!?!? What’s it called exactly? I would love to try it
@@TinyBoatNation I think he meant Alumilite, after Googling for a bit.?
