    What I love most about the JHS Show is that Josh is pedal builder and JHS is a pedal company, yet Josh spends so much time talking about how fantastic other pedals from other brands are. The passion is really authentic.

      I agree. Unless it is biasing, put a damn knob on the outside. I think the designer who puts internal dipswitches and trimpots on guitar pedals must be Joe King.

      @@ltd4all indeed you get what you pay for, sometimes. It may also get cloned by someone with amazing graphics and big pretty knobs, then you'll pay a lot more than its worth. But we all know, tone is in the eye of the beholder.

    I had a friend build a Nu-Tube box as a compressor when these NU-Tubes first came out. It was a Developer kit. That compressor rivaled a Manely Vari-Mu in color and tonality.

    A nutube is derived from a vacuum tube type that has been used for “digital” displays like in clocks and microwaves

    • @mbessey
      @mbessey ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. It's essentially a VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) with just a couple of segments. Very clever, in that it has similar non-linear amplification as a vacuum tube, but only needs low voltage to operate.

    So many good sounds. Unfortunately, I'd have choice paralysis. I'd end up putting knobs on the hidden pots, then never settling on a tone, then inevitably breaking the pots. Very cool pedal and concept. Curious about the future of that tube replacement tech.

    @therealjustincase ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Interesting pedals! But the HD-S does not actually contain the NuTube, it is all solid state! Pretty unusual circuit though. The lights in the little window are just LEDs and are purely decorative, no actual signal goes through them. The other two kits in the series - the OD-S and TR-S do contain the NuTube though.

  • @m0j0b0ne
    @m0j0b0ne ปีที่แล้ว

    NuTube is a really interesting development; I have one in my Vox Silk Drive. The "tube" is actually the phosphorescent display that shows an oscilloscope view of your waveform; a nifty, yet nigh-useless featurette. I wouldn't even call it a feature; the feature is trebles and articulation for days, but it never gets harsh. That and you can use it as a stompbox, a preamp or as an amp direct to a mixer or FRFR powered cab. A quick BTW; the Ampeg ReverbeRocket is the amp heard on Frampton Comes Alive

  • @legrompf
    @legrompf 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    These tubes are basically Vaccum Fluorescent Display tubes, a rather old technology used to display digits in calculators and many other devices, It is still used today. Here they "just" re-arranged the design so it doesnt display digits any more, and has usable response to audio signal. It is a low voltage double triode.

  • @nj1255
    @nj1255 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    All of them sound crazy good! It's a shame they are so expensive, but I get that they are basically amp-in-a-box type pedals (those nutube thingys are not cheap).

    • @sub-jec-tiv
      @sub-jec-tiv ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Much cheaper than a classic Fender amp. But it really depends on what tone quality you want. This one is cool but at extreme settings it does seem to have a kind of ‘modular synth wavefolder’ sound that you will either like or not. I’m a Eurorack person so it works for me.

    At 18:38 is basically Josh's distortion sound. I've heard Josh get this sound from a Tonebender and a number of other pedals. It's like a tight, slightly fuzzy, slightly gated sound. I like the sound, but it's funny how Josh gets this out of so many pedals.

    • @solomonsanchez1897
      @solomonsanchez1897 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's how people who have a specific sound in mind always adjust their pedals. I'm guilty of doing it with amps and pedals. Fuzz pedals sometimes have a symbiotic relationship with amps and need to set a certain way to sound good. This used to cause me to flip fuzz pedals pretty often before I started being creative.

    Vox came out with the MV-50 mini amps using the NUTUBE technology and i was shocked how good it sounded, i tried the hi gain model with a Horizon Drive in the front of it to clean it up a bit to taste, i wish they would make it more pedal board friendly with a regular iec cable i think it would be killer.

    I also love simple circuits and exploring those - nice and inspiring to hear you speaking about it. And even more inspiring are those circuits that are REALLY different. This includes for me those NuTube circuits but also, much more simpler, the (also rare) pedals that - for example - use digital inverters (Type 4049 - like in a Red Llama) or misuse other IC chips (like the LM386). I love these, as they stray from the herd of all 99% standard circuits. Would love to see a video from you about all those "misfits" - as I guess, you know even more then the two I just mentioned 🙂

    I wonder what the results would be if you put the jhs morning glory > korg tr-s > a cab sim pedal such as the the tc impulse or two notes cab m - would it equal ultimate ampless setup? Additionally you know what would be cool? jhs colourblx v2 with the korg tr-s straight into a mixer/audio interface or cab sim. I reckon any ‘amp in a box’ pedal before the tr-s would be killer for ampless rigs.

  • @Spuzzmacher

    My two favorite pedals work together to make a wundebar sound. The rare Effectrode Helios (not the Mercury), and the Effectrode Fire Bottle mag booster feeding into it. Those two pedals stacked together sound so good with my dual bucker G&L, I don’t even need an amp & mics, I can plug it straight into daw, record & apply the atmospherics afterward in the mix. Even playing straight through the daw over the monitors sounds better than most of my amps ever did. Try em.

    • @Spuzzmacher
      @Spuzzmacher ปีที่แล้ว

      …& the Helios is the tube fuzz you’re talking about. Instead of just piping the same fuzz circuit we’ve all heard a million times through a tube, it uses the properties of the tube to achieve every part of the fuzz. And… is the fuzz on Gilmours board.

    I’m really curious about what you think of the Providence SOV-1 pedal. Please do a video!🎉
