I bought a twin tail, I think. I don’t think I’ll buy another one. He is very beautiful and I love him but his fins are so heavy he can’t swim as well as he could when he was smaller. It makes me feel bad for him. I might try a female next time.

    • @rat_dragon
      @rat_dragon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

PLEASE GET THE FEMALE! Female bettas have more personality and are far more active than males, even plakats. Females flare (unlike what some Redditors somehow believe), and their fins can become almost as long or longer than some males. Keep this in mind though - "elephant ear" females (really called Dumbo) grow very long fins. I had a girl with underdeveloped eyes, a 1.5" body, 3/4"" tail and 1/2" pectoral fins. If you don't want long, flowy fins, don't get a Dumbo or long-finned female. They don't have many problems like males and are more active but still.

Personally, the female elephant ear betta was my favorite. I have one right now, and I love how their pectoral fins are bigger than other species of bettas. My elephant ear betta's fins did split a little though, but it doesn't look as bad as you might think. I think maybe you shouldn't get the bettas that look similar to Captain America, Soundwave, and Sonic (Right away at least) because the new betta could remind you of them. Plus, it could be fun to try a new type of betta. Thats just my opinion. 😊 Good luck!

It's quite weird to see them in their tiny jars. Here in Switzerland, this would be unthinkable - and that's pretty awesome.
Pet shops are required to home their stock in show aquariums, have enrichment for them and most shops do house them in fully planted tanks. While they are not required to give them an appropriately sized tank (the minimum tank size for a beta would be 54 litres), but honestly they're never in a tank smaller than 10 gallons.

Same here in Austria. I got dirty looks when I bought a 10 gallon tank for my betta even though their minimum is 5 gallons

    • @bugsandbrushes
      @bugsandbrushes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@yourwitchbesti Yeah, shops here do a very good job informing customers about proper care and always explain that giving an animal the minimum care requirements isn't in it's best interest, neither is it in yours if you want to enjoy a long lived and happy pet. I personally am very grateful to the employees at my favourite fish store who helped me greatly to build an awesome world for my wet crew. ^^

my first fish was a galaxy koi betta from petco! I've had him for about 8 months now, he started out mostly red, light blue, dark blue and some black specks, and he keeps morphing - mostly blue now with some of the red showing through. It's exciting to see new patches of color pop up.

Sometimes there are really cool varieties in the $4 “assorted female/male cups at petco, which would normally sell for much more. I’ve gotten a koi betta and an elephant ear betta for $3 and $4 just because they happened to be labeled “assorted female” instead of with their morph name.

I would definitely pick the White Rose Petal Male. Also, I have kept many bettas before and have always struggled keeping their fins from splitting up until I started using Vita-Chem. It is a fish supplement that you are suppose to add to your food before you feed however, I just had a couple drops in the tank every other time I feed and, thankfully, the two bettas that I have currently, still have no splits. Give it a try and see what happens.

At my petco location I’m the aquatic specialist and I’m in charge of everything well, aquatic. My favorite has to be either the Koi or Galaxy Koi bettas, both because of their unique and beautiful colors and because they are short finned bettas which I always explain that they have a better time swimming. I’ve got to say in most locations I’ve been to they get pretty forgotten about and it’s sad because of how little space they get and then there’s the customers who don’t want to put them in anything bigger than a 5 gallon tank. I do my best and always try to pursue them into getting a 10 WITH a filter/heater. Although I have no problem explaining what fish need I still get annoyed on how little people do research and either solely rely on employees for all the info(which mostly don’t know at all), or don’t care about the proper care

We need more specialists like you selling fish in chain pet stores! We don't have Petco in Canada (at least not in Ontario). Our local PetSmart has pretty knowledgeable fish people that give good advice, but they sell so many undersized "betta tanks". I have never seen a Koi betta in any local pet store, which is too bad because I would have been interested in one, male or female, had I seen it.

I had a rose tail betta before, but I had him for a short time, around 1,5 year
He's my first betta fish, so I was really a novice at fishkeeping
He got sick, I didn't know what I did and what should be done
He did seem weighed down by his tail after he got sick, so I had him in a makeshift breeding box in his 7-gallon tank
So he still has access to a lot of clean water but he didn't have to swim too far from the bottom of the tank
The second male betta is also the long-finned one
He is a marbled half-moon, I had him for 3 years now
He started looking to get weighed down a bit by his tail, as I seen him rested on the plants more often than before
The conclusion I got is, if I ever have another betta fish, I would look for the plakat tail (even though the long-finned ones are really gorgeous)
Or perhaps I would try on honey gourami or dwarf gourami

I‘ve had two bettas, I can say they will either color change drastically or only just a little. My first betta, Quartz, was a veiltail male and we bought him as a solid white with a purple-blue tail. After 6 months, he had a reddish-bluish-purplish tail, and had scattered scales that were either blue or red. My second bette, Blu, is a delta male. We bought him as a blue betta with a black head and a red tail. After 1-2 months, his tail started getting some cyan streaks, his black head only cam up to eyes, and his body started fading from dark to light blue. He has had some tail biting issues, but that only occurred when he was a little overweight and I tried to fast him.

Hello! Awesome video!! I've kept multiple dragon scales and none of them have gone blind so far, fingers crossed. I find for dragons you want to find one that doesn't have a "full mask" cause that will increase the chances the crystals can grow over the eyes. As for rose tails my boyfriend has one and he's super weighed down by his massive fins. He has ended up nipping his beautiful fins id assume to get rid of that weight, so definitely something to consider! Good luck on your fish journey

So their wasn’t as much air pressure and the humidity “ softened “ the water. So I guess it just depends on where you live.

    Just a friendly advice🙂
Plakat bettas need more than 5 gallons because they like to swim a lot. I think 7-8 gallons will be ideal for a plakat.
But if you get a long-finned betta fish, it will definitely be fine in there, because they don't swim a lot, they need to rest their heavy fins😄
Have you thought of turning this into a shrimp tank? You can put over 30 shrimp in that tank

We had a koi female from Petco and she did keep the koi look but she did get way more colorful as she matured and grew healthier. So yes their colors do change but they just get brighter and more orange and black spots.
The rose petal male with the blue streaks will end up getting way more blue on him. He may end up looking more like a blue butterfly as he matures, which will also be beautiful.
And with your tank size and setup, keeping a small betta sorority of 4 or 5 females would be a fun venture. I lost my red and blue bicolor halfmoon male not long ago after having him 5 years, and I think a betta sorority is going to be my next move.

I had a yellow rose tail and with really low flow his tail grew to be as long as his body! I was surprised he never had any issues with fin biting so it was a flawless tail that looked just like a rose petal. However it DID weigh hime down alot which meant the filter had to be at little to no flow at all and since he was in a marine land portrait (a tall 5 gal) I had to have betta hammocks all over and a betta log (hich he LOVED).
His long fins, though beautiful, meant he needed special care. I had to slow feed him floating pellets one at a time so he wouldnt miss them as he could not chase them, he needed more frequent water changes and gravel vaccuming since the filters flow had to be soooo low, and again i had to purchase specific decor to ensure he was able to rest at various points in the tank and so there was no chance his fins would get caught or tear.
I got a plakat this time as I dont have the time to care for a long fin betta right now, but even though he was alot of work he was by far my FAVORITE betta and we had a very stong bond due to all the extra time and care i had to give him.

If I was allowed to have a tank in my office I would probably still get one since I spend 40+ hours a week here and could keep a much closer eye on him. For my home tank, I just bought a Half-moon King Male. I still don't have a name for him but he is pearlescent white with flecks of turquoise and black. While I did say it wasn't what I saw online she still does have those colors, some are just less dominant along with combination of colors. Earlier I saw her predominantly blue with her normal koi markings that show up randomly, thing is she has never had that much blue at one.

The problem for crowntail betta I had before was that the tips of his tail became curly and misshaped once he grew older, despite that he was perfectly health in a 10 gal planted tank. I don't know if other strain of long-tail betta have the same issue or not. But ever since then I prefer plakat. I have a female koi plakat now, and I personally found that female betta is a lot more fun than male, because they are more tolerable to other tank mates, and as colorful as males (especially for plakat, male and female looks very similar)

Late to the comments. But I picked out a stars and stripes Betta from my local Petco. Only one store close to me. Couple of PetSmarts and Pet Supplies Plus which all have fish. But this special Betta from Petco was very active in his cup and not full grown. Black Friday special.

👋 I have a really important question so my betta will not stop flaring at the glass and I have tried everything, first I put paper around the tank because his finagle was ripping so that seemed to work but I couldn’t tell because I couldn’t see him, then I moved the tank with the paper still on and took some off, he freaked out again and would not stop I have no idea what to do!!!! Please help!!!!

Loved the pink orchid betta 💜 I have a red male crowntail right now, and I thought he would stay solid colored but he’s actually growing a bit of purple coloration! If/when I get another betta someday, I’ll probably reach out to my college first- I feel like there are a lot of students who aren’t taking the best care of their bettas and would be willing to rehome them. But I am also looking forward to doing the Petco snoop someday.

Rehoming bettas feels so good. Most of the bettas I've had have come from Craigslist or Kijiji, or were owner drop-offs to my LFS, who were not in good shape and were given to me free by the staff there, who know me pretty well. I recently lost one of the 2 bettas that I got 3 years ago, from a family whose boys had lost interest in their wet pets after getting a couple of kittens. Those two were in the tiniest little triangular tanks, with most of the space taken up by decor, and a tank floor littered with food. With me, they've lived in a planted and divided 10g tank, fed both pellets and frozen foods, etc. I still have one of the 2, and hope he lives a long time yet. ❤💜💙

Honestly, there was a reason I picked a betta before. 3 days ago I was going to pet o to get two bettas, one was so excited but the other was just calm. I got the excited and calm one because I did feel so uncomfortable seeing all these bettas in torture. Just a thing before you ask yes their still with me right now

i dont have a local petco but i do have some awesome local fish stores. i dont have too many bettas but the two i have are a
white plakat which originally had 1 blue scale but now he has multiple all over him. he also has a few black dots and some blue above his eye
and either a dragonscale or a metallic halfmoon which is whitish with reds, blues and some slight pinkish purples. he is also half blind because of diamond eye and is a tail biter

I have a rose tail and a dragon scale. The rose tail betta absolutely is weighed down by his fins and spends all his time resting on leaves or in his log. It's really quite sad. My dragon scale betta has a tumour which is apparently also very common in dragon scales but so far she's been a champ about it. I've also heard twin tail Bettas are prone to genetic defects and don't usually live as long.

I've stopped getting koi bettas, because they never keep their original coloration. The only exception I would give is if it were a giant betta. I love giant bettas! I've also stopped buying dragon scale bettas, because I also have experienced the scales growing over the eyes. I tend to go for plakats, because who has time for fin nipping? Though, I did just buy a half-moon male yesterday, because he was a stunning iridescent green/purple color. Plus Petco currently has a sale on HM's, sooooo..... haha
