Ready for a range and speed challenge? I suggest an older Dutch band called Focus. Their performance of Hocus Pocus on a Midnight Special is amazing. A perfect treat for Christmas😊
I miss MTV Unplugged. Like going to a small intimate club with pristine sound and hearing a world famous band jam out . No place to hide if you can't sing or play an instrument. Great energy, great sound, great performance!
Regarding the motion he makes in the middle of the song. He's effectively flipping off "the big guy". The song is referencing a homeless person who sleeps on the concrete, doesn't know how to read etc. The lyrics prior to the Flip off are "prayin' Now to something that has never showed him"
Even though I’m seven months late, I didn’t see anyone answer your question about Eddie’s gesture. The lyrics he sings right before that are “oh prayin' Now to something that has never showed him anything” so I think he was in the character of the subject of the song, basically fed up and cursing the god that he prays to, who never gave him any confirmation or help.
I think Eddie was flipping off God. The lyric where he flips the bird was "Oh Praying now to something that has shown him anything." Just my interpretation of that moment in the performance.
Eddie Vedder is one of my all-time favourite male vocalists. He just doesn't sound like anyone else, and he knows how to use his voice to affect. The way he weaves varying degrees of fry and breath-y rasp (I don't know the technical term) into his singing, on top of his already gravelly voice, is masterful. Most rock, grunge and especially metal singers tend to turn their fry on and off like a tap, but he can ramp it up and down in increments really well. He also seems to give every performance 100% energy too.
Eddie Vedder's vocals are, as always, on point. I don't know how appreciated his vocal abilities were at the time. Coming in an era with other grunge vocalists such as Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, Kurt Kobain, and Chris Cornell, it was easy to get lost in the shuffle- even though Pearl Jam was the most successful of these acts. Loved this entire MTV concert performance. Will have to sponsor Jeremy at some point as well as an Eddie solo track in the future.
Eddie Vedder, along with the other major vocalists labeled grunge, always struck me as so real and genuine. That entire Seattle-area scene was marked by a healthy lack of commercialism, and a great focus on artistry. Bands weren’t quite playing the game according to some set rules. And Eddie, Kurt, Layne and Chris were a different breed of rock singer. “Black” was Pearl Jam in power ballad mode; here they got down to rocking.
You should absolutely run through more Pearl Jam unplugged songs, and then go to the best of the best and listen to Alice In Chains unplugged. You’ll get blown away. And with both bands, it really helps to have the words. The songs are haunting, extremely emotional, and beautiful if you can understand what they’re saying. Grunge is the most deep an emotional rock you’ll find. Most of the songs are fairly depressing, but really make you look into yourself.
If no one has commented on the 'gesture ' it was in reference to the previous lyrics 'Praying, now to someone who has never shown him anything '. Basically flipping off the person who he's praying to
When the opera singer says “how does he do that??” That’s all you need to know. 😂 You could go through this entire Unplugged session and be amazed. Black is.. the grunge version of a Ballad. PJ aren’t really a ballad band. They have a couple of slower songs, but in general, they are grunge ROCK. Some of their stuff is really hard. I would love to see your reaction to Porch, live at Pink Pop in 91. 😅
O.K. Maggie, This video is high-energy --- Eddie is wound - up tight in this presentation. It almost looks like he was gong to flip someone off. Just wait until he starts climbing around AND jumps into the audience. A trusting soul....... No wait that was in another video. The one where Josh had the lights up too much!!!! Take care and stay safe...........
As great as he was here he still hadn't found his voice! Listen to "Arc", a multilayered vocal track which reminds me of an African male choir with a Native American sounding lead! I think you'll be impressed... And for a wild ride listen to "Do the Evolution". He uses a bit of distortion but trust me, he makes the most of it... Sounds like an absolute beast! The man was put on this earth to sing!
Nice reaction Maggie, I like how you articulated about how he uses his vocals. That hand gesture he gave, he may have been flipping someone off, that camera cut off the top of his hand. A scale shows balance of goods weighted, even is what this scale shows.
For real. I commented about this myself. Is that a tribute band? A stock photo from the internet? Her friends dressed up for Halloween? There are thousands of actual photos of Pearl Jam available on the net so I’m pretty confused how she got the wrong guys.
Eddie Vedder, the singer (only surviving grunge era singer pretty much - bubble wrap him!). He gave the old school gesture for the finger or f you without the finger in it because that lyric was very close to him. His father was an abusive a hole and not really around.
@@khworker1322in the photo, not the video, which I think she might have edited in later as this comment is over a year old. And just so you know, the photo is of Even Flow, a tribute band from Perth Australia. So I've done my due diligence, I guess it's you looking like a doofus.
Maggie Renee, I believe that gesture over his shoulder to the sky perhaps, was a physical improvisation to the lyric he sang about the song's character praying - "Oh, prayin' - Now to something that has never showed him anything" - A comment on belief in false "gods" or ideologies -- Not a signal to the band, but to the false gods people place in the sky, or "heavens" that don't do you much good in the long run, at least not for this song's character -- PS - thank you for the hair windmill at the end - You have the BEST sense of humor of any of these "trained" reviewers, and probably the most talent vocal-wise as well
I very much like the variety that Pearl Jam offers in their singing / playing styles. And the skill they employ in doing them. This song works really well with acoustic guitars. Loved your reaction/ analysis.. After seeing that interesting production of Atalanta recently I am wondering what operas might accommodate Windmills. ⚖
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but at 5:28 in this video, Vedder is, for some reason, giving the middle finger to someone in the sound booth or working the lights. It's tough to say who.
I love your voice. It is relatively low, and.. gorgeous :-) I sang Soprano until 8th grade. MY Teacher told me my time at that register was limited...yup, she was right.
Loved this reaction, for me this is much more a feeling than Black. Saw them in the smallest venue ever back when they were infants, and "Alive" was da sh. So heard and saw them from 1m away doing this one and Alive, a memory for life, and in Sweden since that's where I'm from/at. You will love "Alive" and omg "Jeremy", with Jeremy you have to do the video. Merry Holidays 😉 and Merry New.
Eddie also have some solo works. I like particularly his "Ukelele songs", where is singing almost just with the Ukelele sound making that songs more interesting for vocal technic analysis. I would suggest "Can't keep" from that album.
It's terrific seeing you really enjoy Eddie Vedder. Check him out singing with The Doors. Also singing with the late, great Chris Cornell from Soundgarden, singing Hungerstrike together. Trust me little lady, you'll love it.
First time viewer. You're quite the mimic. Loved the British accent. I'm a drummer so I don't know shit about perfect pitch, but I would guess that you have it. Liked and subbed.
I figured out who that was at the top left corner of the screen, I knew it wasn't Pearl Jam. It's Even Flow, a Pearl Jam tribute band from Perth, Australia.
@@dh2392 the middle guy looks like he's trying pretty hard to channel eddie's vibe but yeah the rest of them are way off. i don't know how she could watch the unplugged video and not realize those aren't the same guys.
