    I hope this observation on how Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam sang Even Flow on MTV Unplugged in 1992 helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

      And Daniel Johns from Silverchair. They got big when they were only 13 (that’s when they first recorded Tomorrow), so I think what they did was really impressive (even if they missed the peak of grunge by a couple of years- Tomorrow is pure grunge). Everything up to their third album was really good, but the sound changed significantly after that, and to something I’m personally not a fan of.

      Well, I don’t listen to it unless I’m in the mood to cry. Actually, I feel that way about Pearl Jam entirely sometimes. It’s not happy music for me, it’s music for when I don’t feel good. And even though it’s intense let emotional and I cry sometimes, I always feel better afterward.

    Sam, your instincts are correct. He was blowing his voice out and hiding it really well. They were heavy drinkers and chain smokers back in the day. Being young he could get away with it But I saw Pearl Jam in 2015 and he was drinking red wine from the bottle during the set. It was amazing but when he had to hit a high note you could tell he was struggling... That's why later in his career he relied on that nice even baritone he's got

    • @MrCancer66
      @MrCancer66 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ robertmanley4828. Not necessarilly relevant. Did he and PJ have back to back concerts, had they played just the night befoe in front of 60-70 thousand fans and he had a 24 hour or less turn around to rest his voice? Where was this concert in the whole long concert tour,was it in the middle or end? You don't say anything about that. Not saying you're necessarilly wrong but your opinion means almost nothing without the back story context as in what number in the concert circuit was this that you attended and did they havea a show 24 hours or less the previous night.? Now to be fair a lot of actually great singers do blow their voiceout some after a long career.Eddie maybe when you saw him 15-17 years into his career, Chris Cornell in his later years wouldn't evenattempt the high notes he hit in the 90s on "Say hello to heaven",John Fogerty kinda lost his ability to hit those notes from his late 60 and early 70s career.Bur nuance, ya don't tell us anything about the things mentioned.

      @leolaurentis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      so, i went for a video on his range and it lists a lot of notes on the 6th octave. i can agree that he goes that high, but it seems more like a byproduct of the screaming than a note he planned to hit. i don't know for sure, though.

    • @CipherSerpico
      @CipherSerpico 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      His highest notes are around D5 and Eb5 (not counting falsetto). On the song Dissident, right towards the end, the part “escape is never ... the SAFEest place” - that’s basically his highest note that isn’t a scream or falsetto. Its a D5. It’s at 3:17 in this video:
      th-cam.com/video/4cpJ982JGOo/w-d-xo.html
      A D5 for a baritone is insanely high though. Especially considering the fact that he never really uses a mix/head voice, the way someone like Axl Rose would.
      Btw, pretty much no popular male singer can hit an A6. Except for Prince. Most male singers can’t go past like B5.

    I remember watching this on MTV when it first aired. I'd never watched Pearl Jam perform and was only familiar with their music through what the local radio djs played. I remember thinking how crazy it was to watch Eddie's face when he sung because it was SUCH a contrast to what my ears heard. It *sounds* like there's a ton of pressure and tension, which normally you'd see in the face, but Eddie's face was so relaxed at exactly those spots when you think you should be seeing tension. It made his performance persona seem as unhinged and on the edge of losing sanity as the subjects of the songs were. And that, of course, just made them that much cooler.

      30 year career, yes, but his voice is vastly different and has gone through many changes over the years. He absolutely shredded his vocal chords early on, and had to adapt to not being able to sing the way he used to. Despite a weaker, more warbly voice these days, he arguably has more control and knows his limitations.

    Just have to say, you’re understanding of articulation is awesome! I’m a linguist with a focus on phonetics and phonology. Really cool hearing these techniques used for singing lessons. Maybe it’s common, but you’re the first person I’ve come across that’s well versed in linguistic knowledge

    Pearl Jam is and was always something that stands alone. I listened to progressive music in high school and when Nirvana hit the scene, it was taken over with “alternative rock”. But Pearl Jam makes statements on record, on stage and in life in a way that uses their platform in an awesome way. A way that feeds the soul of a rocker. And I think that’s how he has sustained a career like this. My favorite author has a book series called “Rock Chick” and her female characters always say, “I can’t die! I haven’t seen Pearl Jam live yet!” Lol. Says it all! ❤️

    He’s been going 30 years tour upon tour and he’s kept it up like the first years of his career. Take a listen to “just breathe” and do a video to analyze how amazingly different he uses his voice in that song. His control of his instrument is just so amazing in so many different directions. Best singer of hard rock yet best singer of slow heartfelt songs. More than anything Eddie always goes for it. Authentic, vulnerable, and passionate.

    Sam, this entire acoustic album is a masterpiece. Eddie is still amazing on live performances. In that acoustic, songs like Black, Jeremy, Alive and Porch are worthy of reaction. In a recent performance they did Love reign o'er me which
    , originally by The Who, and that rendition was stunning. Greets from Brazil, and congratulation for the amazing job.

    Great review! To the extent that Eddie blew his voice out it was on songs like Blood, not Even Flow. Pearl Jam is my favorite band, Eddie my favorite singer and I think he is more conscious now of how he’s singing. I think back in the day the point was to get that tension and express as much as he could with it, I don’t know if he had longevity in mind. Again, listen to Blood. There are ways that his voice has changed over 30 years and certain sounds he can’t produce as consistently anymore, but as any fan will tell you, he still sounds great because in my opinion his voice has a warm, calming quality to it even when he’s not trying to sing anything crazy. As an example, my favorite song of theirs is Nothing As It Seems. Maybe you’ll like it.

  • @katherinemorelle7115

    As much as I loved the messages in Nirvana (and still do, hello, In Bloom!), Pearl Jam has always been my favourite grunge band. I live other bands too, like Alice in Chains, but there’s something in Eddie’s voice that pulls at me. And I find songs like Black to move me so deeply, and they have this extra “musicality”, I guess. Where you can pull apart each of the instruments and hear the talent of each person in the band individually, and it still put together, is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s really difficult to describe how I feel about Pearl Jam.
    I will say though, that from last I heard, Eddie’s voice still sounds just as good a sit did 30 years ago, so I really don’t think he’s doing anything that injures his vocal chords. And he’s just a legend. Many have tried to recreate that sort of sound (like Scott whatsisface from Creed, who sounds atrocious), but no one has ever managed to accurately reproduce that kind of magic. It’s his and his alone.
    Speaking of magic, anyone know if Sam has done Chris Stapleton Sometimes I Cry live at Bing lounge? Because I can’t find it if he has, and that’s probably my second favourite male voice (though obviously very different genres!)

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add that I don’t think Eddie sounds exactly the same as he did 30 years ago, but I do think he still sounds as good. Slightly different, but still very good.
