I think I remember seeing this film in the theatres, and I enjoyed it. I never realized how criminally underrated it is. Talking penguin movies were quite the niche cinema, I guess
Surf's Up is really something unique. It's simple but it gives a great message: learning to enjoy life instead of being driven to win, and sacrificial friendship. I also love how they used motion capture for the realistic camera movements to make the entire movie look like an actual documentary. This and Wall-e have to be some of my favourite animated movies of 2007-2008. It's weird if you think that Modern animated movies (with the exclusion of a few recent releases like Puss in Boots 2) lack the originality and a good message or storytelling, because many people falsely assume that "animation is for kids", when you get Masterpieces like Shrek, Megamind, Wall-e, HTTYD and Surf's up
Yeah, one of those lackluster movies you mentioned is Frozen. Oddly enough, one of the same people who co-directed this movie, which is rather unique and really good, co-directed Frozen, which is a rather unoriginal film with TERRIBLE writing and bad messages (it's OK to run away, all strangers are evil monsters, don't take responsibility for your actions, etc.)! How does that happen?!
Just finished my rewatch of this film after many years And it's so so good. The film is so simple and It's so we'll done The animation is amazing, the voice acting was quality and the soundtrack is one of my favorites And that final shot of them in the tube was beautiful Great film ❤️
I've rewatched this film 3 or 4 times in the past year. And what is crazy to me is I enjoy it just as much as when I was a kid. I went back and watched Open Season (same studio similar budget 1 year before) and I was legitimately disgusted with how bad it was in comparison. I live in California and have been surfing pretty regularly for the past 2 years and this movie captures so perfectly the attitude that surfers have and should have. Surfing can be completely embodied by the scene where they're all surfing close to sunset and 'Into Yesterday' is playing. Everytime I see the scene it just relaxes me. Tank Evans is also just so amazing because of the caricature he is. Everytime he's onscreen I'm laughing. Happy to see someone else giving this movie the recognition it deserves.
Watched this movie many many times as a kid, have a lot of fond memories about it. This was a fantastic vid! Never realised just how great the movie was/is! That cast lineup, wow.
brilliant video, I was smiling the whole time because you've said everything perfectly. I'll always have Surf's Up as one of my top animated films for it's authenticity and Indie pacing; building on the surprisingly already developed characters/dynamics and letting the pace go its own way to a climax that actually raises the stakes more than you realise. Criminally underrated, so thanks for talking about it!
This movie actually feels closer to my heart now than it did when I was smaller This movie OWNS ME Great video Emni! Love how you basically told exactly what makes this movie great, especially with you having taken part in the surf community as well! (Side note: I come from the freestyle trampoline community - yes, it’s a thing -and the vibes are quite exactly the same! Just with electronic music and less water. Still got half naked people too though!)
Agreed! I'm older now and I suddenly find myself in the position of Z. I was a competitive dancer and touring dancer for many years. But now I'm in a place where I don't have access to the time or space to dance, and my body is finally falling apart. It's been truly traumatic. I'm not the dancer I once was and that kills me. So yeah, this movie really speaks to me more now than it did when I was at the peak of my ability.
@@stacie1595 That sounds unfortunate. The protagonist of cars three is in a similar situation as you so I would recommend examining how he handles his situation.
I loved this movie as a kid. I love this movie even more now than I did back then, because this is one of the few kid's movies that sheds light upon existentialism.
Great video! I’m from Oceanside California and the surf culture here is real! When I watched this movie when I was a kid I was so amazed how they nailed the vibe correctly, even now today I have so much admiration for the crew that worked on it. They killed it!
Great take, on this forgotten masterpiece, a first animation to do a documentary style of filmmaking….the voice cast is great and the soundtrack is immaculate….. You’ve just earned yourself a new subscriber…
That movie is one of the golden gems like many old movies. There are so many deep quotes and moments that youngsters find funny, but as we age, we find it pretty majestic and realistic.
this is a way better movie analysis than like 70% of million sub channels have ever done, you aren't spending 17 mins just recapping everything that happened in the movie, you're actually going in depth about characters and themes. PEAK video.
thank you i just watched it the other day and its just stuck with me "how can a movie about surfing penguins can even make me feel so much". seeing this video (and also some thoughts i already had about it myself haha) its clear to me. this movie has soul, has so much soul and it pierced my heart. 10/10 ill watch it again in the near future, what a classic.
i absolutely love this analysis so so much, didnt think there was going to be much about surfs up but videos like these make me feel so happy and reliving the film again :)
I was lucky, I watched this movie around 2010 on DVD - when I was about 47 years old. So I could really appreciate its quality, messages and , yes, its effective management of partly rather complex issues. But mostly, as another viewer (NW-Ninja) wrote down in the comments it made me smile, oftentimes giggle and sometimes laugh out loud throughout. Have rewatched it since several times. Thanks for this well-done reminder!
This movie is easily my Dad's favorite movie, and Chicken Joe is his favorite character--we have all the interactions between Chicken Joe and the Pen-Guans memorized and will quote them at each other. XD One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention about the cameramen/documentary aspect is the fact that it allows for natural fourth wall breaks and acknowledgements--like how Lani glances at the camera when she's surfing or how Cody looks at it, horrified, when Geek goes over the cliff, or how talking to the cameramen (voiced by the directors!) allows for a natural progression of the plot. I love this movie so much I swear
I completely forgot how great this movie was, i havent watched it in a while i decided to go ahead and rewatch it recently on TH-cam. The movie is absolutely hilarious but also just absolutely heartwarming all the same, i almost cried when i got to the end because of how beautiful the message was. I wish there were more movies like this...
It IS the Citizen Kane of all animated penguin surfing movies! BTW, best animated water... puts Pixar to shame. If you go to Mavericks Beach at Half Moon Bay it looks a bit like Pangoo. AND it has Jeff Bridges.
one of my favorite childhood movie together with ratatouille and princess mononoke. i remember my mom rented it for 48h, and in those 48h i must have watch it at least 6 time. the fact that i was into skateboarding at that time and also love La marche de l empereur (that docu about emperor pinguin) surr helped a lot.
I can't believe this movie got Lauryn Hill to do a song. Other than the unfinished songs from her disastrous unplugged album she only released a handful of songs since her album of the year win in 1997. And one of them was a songs about her struggles with mental health in a abusive relationship on a soundtrack from a movie with surfing penguins.
I LOVED this movie as a kid, and rewatching it recently, it's genuinely a fun watch! Knowing how it was made, with all the improv and camera work, just adds love to the special place in my heart I have for this movie. I also surfed (for a time, I sucked ass and didn't want to drown lol) and am a little familiar with surf culture, and this movie does represent the laid-back nature of it all really well. (also the scene where big z is teaching cody how to carve the board, and to go with the grain/don't fight the wave, genuinely helped me learn how to drive lmao)
This video is done so well! For a new channel on the come up I can’t wait to see how much better you will get in a year or two. I loved the video and can’t wait to see what you cover next!
Surfs up has been one of my favorite movies for so long. Its what introduced me to Green Day and it’s always going to be a comfort movie(your last bit about the therapy and still going through the wiki is too personal)
I watched this movie when I was a kid and I rewatched it recently not expecting much... But I was really surprised how well it holds up and how so many scenes were genuinely funny and how the story is actually enjoyable. I definitely agree with you that this movie is underappreciated and has a certain charm to it that not a lot of other kids movies have!
This has been my favourite film that no one's heard of for years and all of a sudden, yt suggests this video and there's at least 2 other videos on it, this is a good day!

Ahhhhhhh!!! Yes! Surfs up is amazing. Confirmation Bias be Confirmation Bias, I enjoyed and agreed with your breakdown of what makes Surfs Up such a fantastic experience. I have shared this movie with many individuals throughout my adult life and I do agree that this is an underrated Masterpiece that still doesn’t get the credit it deserved. Surfs Up was made with so much heart and soul you can just feel it it every scene. Much of Cinema has lost it’s heart and soul, lost in the emotionless pit we call capitalism. Don’t worry about “how long it takes” to produce content, or the gaps between your content releases. Better to make content you are passionate about with genuine passion than slam out videos just to slam out videos. Thank you for the very kind comment! Im so glad you enjoyed and agree with my thoughts! I totally agree about creating content! Nothing is more important to me than inspiration and deriving joy and fulfillment from making a video. I wish the same for you and your content! That being said, I have exciting news that I actually posted another video today, and I certainly put it out at my own pace! Haha

Hi ! Must say first time I see you're content and I truly love it ! Really enjoyed the music you added behind you're voice and I would love to learn them, really nice choices btw. If you can find a bit of time to tell me what are theses songs it would be wonderful! Like every music after 10 minutes of video 😂 Anyway I'm a big fan of this movie too and as you i feel it's really underrated so thanks you for talking about it so accurately !
Amazing review the best I’ve ever seen of this movie. By the way chicken Joe is so cool that he probably be Vibin if somebody deep-fried him and ate him alive.
My father has probably watched this film 50+ times. It is a legitimately enjoyable feel good film.

There are 2 types of people, those who recognise Surfs Up as the cinematic Masterpiece that it is and those who haven't seen it yet.
I showed this movie to my old skateboarding stepdad. He said it was genuinely his favorite animated movie after that :)

to be honest, I watched Surf's up because of Green day but the movie turned out better than I thought ❤ truly underrated
as a kid this movie blew up my love of surfing then moving to the OBX in 2017 i was so hyped i could finally surf and hell i even managed to get a shore break barrel while bodyboarding. that movie genuinely sparked something in me and without it i wouldnt have as near the love i have for the ocean and surfing like to the point getting landlocked back in ohio from 2018 to literally exactly 1 month ago was such a pain. Hi ! Must say first time I see you're content and I truly love it ! Really enjoyed the music you added behind you're voice and I would love to learn them, really nice choices btw. If you can find a bit of time to tell me what are theses songs it would be wonderful! Like every music after 10 minutes of video 😂
Anyway I'm a big fan of this movie too and as you i feel it's really underrated so thanks you for talking about it so accurately !
Thank you so much! Unfortunately I no longer have any idea what the songs were called. All of them were from the free TH-cam music catalog though!
Seriously underrated
Yo why this so underrated
Amazing review the best I’ve ever seen of this movie. By the way chicken Joe is so cool that he probably be Vibin if somebody deep-fried him and ate him alive.
Thank you!
I’m still mad that they made a cash grab sequel to this film
Now do March of the Penguins and Mr. Popper’s Penguins to keep the theme going
Great idea. This is a penguin themed channel now
So after all these years and a lot of rewatching I didn't know chicken Joe surf on a Corn board
loves this film
very well made good content keep it up
Thank you so much!
Incredible piece
Thank you so much!!
