Wow! Fantastic video Emmi! Great thoughts/points paired with the perfect clips from the film to support your ideas! Makes me want to go back and re-watch the movies and finally finish the books!
Emmi, I think this was absolutely brilliant. You’ve got a knack for taking a concept and looking at it from all angles in relatively concise way. Love the Lord of the Rings series and this is inspiring me to go back and rewatch all of them…like immediately.
Ahhh thank you!! “Relatively concise” is certainly an accurate description of my scripts… lol. Emphasis on the “relatively”. I strongly support a rewatch/ reread!!
The Ride of the Rohirrim and the charge at Helms Deep always cause a stirring in my heart. It’s a moment which fully captures the human spirit. Fighting against an evil which threatens all that is good, and giving your all to that end.
I watched this video THE day it came out, super excited that you made a new video just after my comment on your Surfs Up video! I have been a bit busy and spaced about leaving a comment until today. My Girlfriend and I have discussed how the LOTR movies represent "real men" and positive masculinity many many times before. I will have to share this video with her. The Hobbit trilogy is, just, disappointing and that's all I want to say about those films that, exist now I guess. I enjoy the aspects of masculinity and "men" within the LOTR trilogy, especially seeing that Tolkien was likely using the creation of the LOTR universe as a means to cope with and escape the trauma he experienced from the tragedy that was the frontlines during WW1. The "good guys" in these LOTR movies, truly do feel like "good guys". The empathy they show for others and their ability to show emotion for fellow men without even a remote fear of being labelled "the gay" is fantastic and I wish more "real men" in modern day society could act in a manner the "good guys" within these films act. You articulated how I feel about this trilogy in a fantastic and interesting way, confirmation bias be confirmation bias once more. I hope one of your videos goes viral and your positive messages and views are seen by those who are on the fence of becoming more empathetic caring people. Would be great if this video helps enlighten individuals willing to grow above the modern day stigma of “masculinity” and become "real men".
Im so glad you enjoyed! It means a lot to hear that my content is perceived in such an empathetic and uplifting way! That’s certainly what I hope for when making my videos. Thanks for sticking around! Your support means so much!
Seeing one side blame men for everything and the other blame women for everything, this was really a breath of fresh air. I've been trying to preach this message for so long, though the ears decide to reject understanding for something more tribal. Seeing this being spoken truly gives me hope. Lord of the rings is an example to every man about what we can be and an example to women about what masculinity truly is. Bravo definitely earned a subscription 👏
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words. Im so glad what I had to say resonated with you. I agree, nobody has TRUE conversations anymore, thats why I enjoy making these videos to hopefully put some nuance out there in a world filled with regurgitation.
This was a wonderful video essay. Not to bring up religion but I think Tolkien being a devout Christian (Catholic) his views on empathy, goodness, friendship etc came from the best parts of his Christian faith. Also my favorite character is Sam. I like that you pushed back against the idea that Sam and Frodo were lovers. I think good friends who are men can be vulnerable with each other.
As a teenager I had read the LOTR trilogy in a German translation, the benefit of growing up with two older sisters who read and provided good literature. Then after watching the first Peter Jackson movie as an adult I bought and read a beautiful english language edition from the Folio Society, the benefit of by now having a good job that also paid well. I was curious how you would deal with the differences between the much more, let's say, a times rather brittle or crisp characterizations in the books and those displayed in the movies. Well, now I know. Good job. All of it but especially your alternative take on the general queer reading of Frodo's and Sam's relationship. Also your remarks on a preferable as well as necessary shift in the conversation on masculinity while examining the character of Aragorn. Thanks for that
Hey Emmi, you expressed something I’ve been trying and failing to say for over two decades and I can’t thank you enough for the clarity of your video essay!😅
I watched the movies but never read the books. I guess one reason I hesitate to read them is the fact that Tolkien had Eowyn kill a bad guy to just to one-up Shakespeare’s Macbeth and not because a woman can actually slay the big bad guy on her own merits. That and the fact he tends to go over backstories of every other thing/tree branch (I prefer stories that don’t meander too much, and it’s a reason I prefer C.S. Lewis and especially Terry Pratchett. Even when Pratchett talks about something else or shifts prespective, he does it in a way where I can still follow along and understand why it’s important to the story/Discworld universe as a whole. Plus, there’s more female representation in his books as well.) However, this vid gave me a little more insight on what I’m missing out on, and builds a strong case on why these books are a great read. I may need to give them a read after all.
Honestly I think if you read the books, it would completely change your opinion of Eowyn! I have to totally disagree with you on that one. Im not sure if its just because I have some extra book context, but I think Eowyn certainly earned that kill with her own merit! But the rest is totally understandable. He DOES love his long and drawn out descriptions!! Haha
Really beautiful essay! As others said, it makes me want to rewatch the movies asap. I’ve heard several people say that Aragorn is the best example of healthy masculinity that exists and I think I have to agree with them, and you! I really like your take on Sam and Frodo too, which is a way I hadn’t thought about their relationship before. Very thought-provoking!

Aw thanks Bren!! You must read the books!!

I really enjoyed this video and it uncovered a lot that I probably already unconsciously knew. Well observed! A severely underrated video and channel!
Thank you so much! Im glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you so much! I would have to agree. I think Aragorn is one of the best male characters ever created.
I appreciate you so much for choosing to make videos on Surf's Up and then LOTR. Very Based!
Great video!
I've always called him "TOLL-KEY-UHN"
Good stuff. I am biased, because I love these movies.
