There is something about a coming-of-age story that can speak to a generation, regardless of story or medium. All you really need is a compelling, distinct character with a universal plight. The DreamWorks' How To Train Your Dragon Trilogy does all this and more by taking the character of Hiccup and taking him on a journey, not just through a single movie, but through a series of obstacles over the span of a decade.

I remember watching How to Train your Dragon on my 10th birthday, How to Train your Dragon after my 15th birthday and How to Train your Dragon 3 a little before my 20th birthday.
M.M oh that makes us the same age then. It really does feel like we're growing alongside Hiccup. By the end of the trilogy, I'm just slightly younger than him by a year.

I love how this trilogy is not scared of making sacrifices like that. First, Hiccup's leg, then his dad and lastly, Toothless. It's realistic that's probably why it really resonates with the audience.
i think its really just like growing up. you gotta let go of things as you mature. it hurts, but in the process, you grow :)
Why is it realistic that magic had to go away until they had kids? It's just crappy hollywood tropes that you think are important because stories don't do them anymore. Well, what story has the dragons stay and explores a world with them? None, because HTTYD was apparently about how Dragons are too holy and sacred for anyone but children.

@@MarkoArillius I think you've seen a different HTTYD... Where in the world have you gotten that "dragons are holy and sacred"? It's literally about a world where dragon - human coexistence consists of an endless war for the top of the foodchain spot until that one *kid* manages to persuade his tribe on that one lonely island to instead make a 'symbiotic alliance' with them. Dragons retreat to their homeworld (or rather, habitat..) not because Hiccup's people found them holy or sacred, but because throughout their lives, they never managed to persuade any meaningful amount of people to change their opinion about dragons like they did.. It's not taking fun away from children (btw, you clearly haven't seen the ending of the 3rd movie nor the Snoggletog specials otherwise I have no idea how have you managed to get to that..), it's protecting dragons from humans that only see them as dangerous beasts that need to be eradicated.

For years on end, this simple sentence will cause people to spontaneously cry, and for good reason. This trilogy is a perfect emotional ride, and the closing out of the trilogy represents the loss of childhood innocence and the wistfulness that comes with it so well. None of us really understood until that moment that we were not ready for a world without dragons, and we will always feel their loss.
the clip starting at 14:40 makes me genuinely cry, the combination of the music and the tone of hiccups voice as he remembers the past he had with toothless and the dragons is so heartbraking

I saw the first HTTYD in theaters shortly after I turned 7. Walking out, I told my parents that they HAD to make a sequel. My dad argued that there was nothing left in his story so there probably wouldn't be one.
I saw the second HTTYD in theaters a few months after I turned 11. I walked out, smug smile on my face as my dad finally accepted that I had called the sequel as a 7 year old. "But don't expect a third one, there's actually no where else to go now, he's grown up." he said as I rambled on about where the story could go from there.
I saw the third HTTYD in theaters for my 16th birthday. I walked out of the theaters crying and I turned to my dad, "That one. *That* was the end of the story." He agreed.
You would be a really good movie critic in the future.

I had a similar experience to you.in addition HTTYD was my childhood, i became friends with my best friend though i love of HTTYD. We pretended to be Vikings and recess, we watched the 2nd movie and tv shows together. I mom also loved the franchise and talked about it a lot...we watched the 3rd one together....watching the dragons fly off was like saying by to my childhood...i was in high School and im no longer a child...that part of my life was over...but far from forgotten.....sorry for getting so stupid and cheesey...i just love HTTYD. Its very dear to me.

It truly is one of those coming of age movies that just hits with it’s audience if you see it in the right window of time 👏 although, never say never, maybe there will be a series similar to HTTYD for another generation down the line!
Same. My sister and I were seven as well. By the end of the final movie we were both in tears, knowing that it was the end of an era. One that will forever be part of our lives.

This line always moves me, because like how Hiccup sees himself in Toothless, I also saw myself in Hiccup. He's the protagonist I didn't know I wanted, but something just clicked instantly the first time I saw the films.
I had the same feelings. I felt like these films were made for me and not just because I grew up with them, but because Hiccup was like a mirror of myself.

He wasn’t forced to stay, he made it clear in gift of the night fury that he *wanted* to be with Hiccup.
But they both grew up, and it got to where he had to make an impossible choice between his brother and his mate. Hiccup took the angst out of that decision by giving him his blessing in leaving.
That and the tail fin thst made it physically possible.

I really love how the vikings grew from hating dragons to living the dream living with dragons in peace and prosperity 😎, but was sad that the world was stuck and arrogant living in the past and hiccup had the special opportunity to show the world that humans and dragons could live together but the world wasn't ready 😑
Man, the slow motion reverse hand motion and turning away that hiccup did to let toothless know it was ok broke me. That part of the goodbye scene still resonates with me to this day 3 years later.

Everyone's already talked about this a lot but this movie is incredibly special to me.
The first movie came out when I was 9 years old and the last one when I was 18. Literally half my life, as I went from elementary school to starting college, these movies were always there. I'm so happy that I could grow physically and emotionally as a person alongside hiccup. It really is special.

John Powell. He helped with both Shrek and Kung Fu Panda before this became his solo film score, and I will fight to the death saying that How to Train Your Dragon (1 specifically) has the BEST soundtrack in film history.

15yo, 19yo, 24yo. I experienced this a little later than the 2000's kids, I'm more towards the Harry Potter gen. And I absolutely LOVE this Trilogy. This trilogy is the definition of masterpiece

"When I was a boy there were dragons" gives me goosebumps every time such an iconic line, that achieves a profound meaning thanks to the context. Always hits me in my feels man
as someone who was raised by a single father, these movies hit me hard. the love between a father and his son is a powerful thing, i know i wouldn't be anywhere near the man i am today without the strong father i had.
Finally someone who talks about the growth of Hiccup and understands the quality of this trilogy. many people automatically assume just because it’s a kids film that it isn’t good . But it’s clearly one of the best trilogy’s in history. Best animated trilogy every . U recognize that this story is on par with any other coming of age movie.
In my opinion httyd is definitely not a kids movie, while it does seem to have a younger audience it’s a movie everyone can enjoy. I hate that it’s called a kids movie bc thinking about what a kids movie is, I think of Mickey Mouse or a Disney princess. With that label a bunch of people judge it before ever even knowing what it is. A lot of my friends have said it probably is so stupid and just a bunch of garbage which genuinely hurt bc I truly believe I’m the person I am bc of httyd, I also deeply believe that I’m here bc of the movies. @@hhh6tO89 I go in the opposite direction, it very much is a kids movie, what I think is wrong is people thinking that that makes it less than something aimed at an older audience. Yes, it is made for kids, but everyone was a kid once and all the themes it plays off are things that adults still struggle with: acceptance, growing up, separation... People seem to approach children's media as dumb or silly bc they don't want to recognize the vulnerability they have inside themselves, how even after being "idependent adults" they still crave for all of those same things, even if they are unwilling to recognize it.
Even when I was a boy, I knew there was something different about httyd. The 2nd & 3rd movies were the only movies ever to make me cry. The music, the story & everything was different to what I usually watched as a (smaller) kid, I can even relate to Hiccups craftsmanship. Even close to a decade later, I still cling to httyd but could never fully explain how genuinely amazing the entire series was, let alone to anyone else. Legit HTTYD 2 was first or second movie to ever make me cry
bruh I cried harder at the end of the hidden world than I have at the end of any movie. I was beyond devastated, because I legit grew up with the series. it was so phenomenal, and I don't understand why this series seriously isn't one of the most popular animated movies of all time- frozen has absolutely NOTHING on this absolute masterpiece.
how to train your dragon came out when i was failing a university course i was only doing because my parents wanted me to do it, i had crippling anxiety and depression but didn't know it yet, and in that low i found how to train your dragon, this series may literally have played a part in saving my life, and it still means so much to me today, i may have been a little older than the target audience, but it still applied to me perfectly.
such an amazing series, one i will cherish for the rest of my life, and bawl my eyes out openly while i do it.

I'm not big on movies but HTTYD has to be my favorite series of all time. Saw the first movie back in late 2010 and it just gives me this feeling similar to the Iron Giant
Man, the Iron Giant was good too. Grew up with all these great movies with great friendships and it's so sad to see this one go.
I was seven when the first movie came out, and my brother (14) loved it, and whatever he loved, I loved. Over time it became this childhood treasure to me, a wonderful world of dragons and vikings where no problem around me had any effect. Around the age of 11-12, my brother went to college and I got transferred into a completely different school, all while my mother got a job as a teacher and became increasingly stressed, causing arguments with my father. I was impulsive, angsty, immature and selfish, but more than anything I was just angry and depressed. Through the years, as silly as it sounds, seeing the final httyd movie was sometimes the only thing keeping me going. Now in 9th grade, Ive taken every action into getting help for myself as well as improving my family relations which are now as high as ever. Seeing the final movie really just struck a bit of me to find myself and grow, that I cant hold on to my childhood forever but that the memory and love from it will always stay with me. Toothless, Hiccup and all of the dragons will always hold a special place in my heart.

5:13, in the book, Toothless is basically to Dragons what Hiccup is to Vikings. Or at least appears that way due to being small, relatively docile, incorrigibly disobedient and worst of all fang free. As a result, Snotlout derisively nicknames them Hiccup the Useless and his dragon Toothless. (It’s where the name comes from. )
The HTTYD series was definitely a rarity that beautifully stuck out in animated films and will likely be a challenge to accomplish again.
I can't express how much I loooooove this series and how it touched my heart as anyone one that has had a pet can relate that transition from "pet" to "family" naturally over the course of time only we aren't fortunate enough to have had a freaking Nightfury!
Hiccup and Toothless unfolded this amazing adventure for us and perfectly depicts what happens over time with even the strongest of bonds and show us that although it isn't easy but it is ok when friends must walk their own paths.
Thank you for this perfectly done series analysis, it brought me to tears again when you revisited the major plot points and showing us how truly special this trilogy is.
Say what you will about millennials but we got How To Train Your Dragon that's definitely a win to me ❤

10:30, Stoick doesn’t die in any of the books. But in Book Nine: How To Steal a Dragon’s Sword, Stoick knowingly gets enslaved to save Hiccup from a similar fate

I cried like a baby when the credits rolled for the 3rd movie and it showed a montage of scenes from the trilogy, starting with Hiccup and Toothless' first interaction of touching Hiccup's hand. This trilogy is something exceptionally special and I'm so grateful to have grown up with it (well, I was a teen when the first one came out, but still. It means so so much to me)
I loved your video and I love httyd from the bottom of my heart. These three movies have become a part of my heart and live and they will always be. Keep up the great work.
amazing to think how young we all were when these movies first came out... i remember attaching myself so intensely to this universe, i adored it. growing up with these dragons, i think it shaped me a lot. these movies are very special indeed, and the fact that we were able to grow up with hiccup and toothless is the most beautiful part. i want to show these movies to my children, but it will never be the same experience for them as it was for us. how fortunate we are. this series was a masterpiece from start to finish.
This trilogy are the only movies that made me cry. That ending was the most satisfying animated ending I've ever seen. Usually in animations the first one is great, but the sequals are just made for money. Hotel Transylvania for example. I loved the first one. But the other two even my 6 year old niece thought were terrible. I hope they don't make another httyd. Or if they do, they do it with new characters and story and leave this perfect ending alone.

*Not only for a girl, but for the whole safety of the dragons in the long run. Sure, they were able to fend off attacks from pillagers trying to wisk away their pet dragons, but there will always be a bigger mess after that and nobody knows how long that they'll be able to fend them off. People don't like what the people of Berk are doing, and not everybody can be changed even with Hiccups demeanor, which is why he allowed himself to let go of Toothless. They needed a safer place and they found that, what was left was for them to go there. A place where no human or ship can ever want to go to not knowing what was inside. A hole in the end of the world, a Hidden one.*
While many consider the Riders/Defenders of Berk and the Race to the The Edge TV series to be 'filler' material in the grand arc of the trilogy, I personally believe they serve an important aspect of Hiccup and Toothless's journey. Firstly, they flesh out the characters from the books a bit more (atleast depict them with Dreamworks' own spin and direction). And secondly, they show us the 'transition' or behind the scenes growth of Hiccup and his newfound role in Berk's society. This is especially apparent in the Riders of Berk series than the later ones. Defenders was mostly the cliche action adventure, with muted character growth (not entirely absent, however). Race to the Edge is a mix bag, with its multi-year run and seasons, but it hints at the problems that Hiccup will face in the 2nd and 3rd movies by giving him a 'trial' of being Chief/Adult away from Stoick's oversight. It also develops his views towards the harsher nature of reality with Viggo serving as an 'Anti-Hiccup'. This does create a conflict given his supposed naivete on meeting Drago later on, but I believe since Race to the Edge was made after HTTYD 2, it does spiritually try to develop his world-view in that respect as well, thus priming him for HTTYD 3 and the final step into adulthood.
Overall, I believe that the TV series also play an important part in Hiccup's coming of age story and thus offer an extended view into Hiccup and Toothless's characters (along with rest of the gang, Stoick, Gobber etc) that the movies simply can't devote their time to. I do recommend watching them along with the movies to get a more 'complete' experience from Hiccup's journey.

These films always managed to be released at a chapter in my life where I needed them. Figuring out who I was during highschool; taking on new responsibilities as I entered college; now, learning how to navigate the immense changes in my life and saying goodbye to parts of the past. Gosh I just love how these films do so well in tying these themes to a fantastical world that I would love to live on.
The tv and Netflix series also played a huge part in my love for this franchise. They expanded the world, lore, and filled in some character gaps during the movie releases. "Riders" and "Defenders of Berk" were my Monday night rituals during high school, and "Race to the Edge" felt like we were all away at college (just less dragons, fighting, and near death scenarios for me). Highly recommend for anyone.
So sad to see it come to an end, but the memories definitely won't fade with me. Can't wait to show all of this to my future kids.
This was such a genuinely amazing video essay, not only did it make me appericiate the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy more, but it helps me love my already favorite type of story. The structuring of this video essay, the transitions. It's all so smooth. The editing is amazing.
I was 17 when the final movie came out, and I remember saying after watching one of the trailers and saying that I hadn't realized how emotionally attached I was to the series
I was 18 and I saw it in theaters with my mom and my twin who saw the first one and I remember that my mom was crying at the good bye scene I got watery eyes but this is one of THE most impactful and best movies to me which I am eternally grateful for
You deserve way more subscribers. You hit everything spot on and went into full detail about the trilogy’s growth. I absolutely loved it. It’s sad how the next generation of Dreamworks animated movies will be more for the younger and more immature demographics, such as the Boss Baby was. The HTTYD series nails everything perfectly about the process of growing up, and the self-evolution that happens alongside it. It’s these types of life lessons that we need more of in children’s movies. The process of the protagonist growing up alongside the audience and fans makes the character more relatable and easier to understand, and so much more hard to let go of. And the music for the series was downright beautiful. John Powell and Jónsi really outdid themselves with the soundtrack. The How To Train Your Dragon franchise was a big part of my childhood. I also loved watching the tv and Netflix series, as they bridged the gap between the first and second movies, and helped explain even more of Hiccup’s growth as a character. I’m truly grateful that I grew up as a 2000’s kid and had the privilege to witness such a marvelous and stunning animated series. This is probably one of, if not my favorite trilogies of all time. Remi it’s really hard to top Alfred Molina’s performance as Viggo. Grimmel had a great presence but in terms of a fully fleshed out character? Viggo all day.
I lived the How to Train Your Dragon movies and I loved The Boss Baby. I want more of both. The Boss Baby does not get the credit it deserves. No one seems to appreciate it like I do. Such a creative and funny movie.
What HTTYD did, growing up with its audience, it has been done so perfectly.

This all really hit home for those of us that were 10-12 with the first one, becuase we've all hit relatively the same age as the characters at every turn. It's like a magnifying glass each time that lets us see the muddled details that we didn't understand made our lives the way they were.
I've always felt more close to the first httyd film than the others but as a 19 year old I just rewatched the second and connected with that story in a whole new way. Like Hiccup, I've entered the stage in my life where I'm struggling to grow up and find my path -- It's amazing how they managed to capture the different phases of a young person's life.
The trilogy is definitely something that hits differently at various stages of life. I saw these movies when I was about the characters’ ages.
When the 2nd came out, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it since I connected so well to Hiccup as the scrawny outcast, which I felt as I didn’t have very many meaningful connections. 2014, I was a junior in high school, had made a great friend group, worried about graduating, and HTTYD 2 came out showing Hiccup also struggling with his future and new dynamic.
HTTYD 3, it’s 2019, I just graduated college, ready for new adventures but was going through a lot of struggling where I felt most ‘home.’ Go back to my family in my hometown? Stay where I had made new friends? Would one have to go? Saw 3rd with a group of friends, bawled my eyes out at the ending, and realized I don’t have to choose one place or another, and that the people I love and connected with will always be with me.
Every now and then, I go through a giant HTTYD binge and rewatch all the movies and shows, and each time things just click and make so much more since with the benefit of hindsight. Once I get to the family and kids aspect, I know they’ll for these movies and shows will be part of our household.
I just wanted to say, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU ALL. The amount of positivity and emotional responses (let alone the views), has been more so than I even anticipated. I want to individually respond to everyone of you, but with work I won’t have the time. So, I will give each of you a heart and a loud Thank you, thank you, thank you! ALSO, for those correcting me, I know Hiccup is 20 in HTTYD 2 😅 five years transpired from the first to the second. What I was trying to say (and clearly I didn’t word it well), is that 4 years had passed in the REAL WORLD, resulting in the 15 year olds watching it being now 19. Hopefully I cleared that up!
Manning Franks a question I always pondered, is that if the opportunity never arise for Hiccup what would he have become down the line to those around him and himself, for instance shooting down Toothless has been said to be the luckiest thing to have happen to Hiccup, as the creator’s of the series describes it as being a near impossible shoot(there is evidence in the beginning that supports this/such as the cannon not being fully calibrated or hunting a night fury one of the fastest, mysterious, dangerous dragons in the series at night of all times). One make say it is no different then the spider that bit Peter Parker, but if one thing changed that prevented the spider from biting him he would never have become the hero we all know and love(this is brought up in the one more day storyline/hate it for the choice Peter makes in that story but it had valid points on what Peter would be if the bite never happened)
Based on the events of the series with the only difference being the relationship between hiccup and Toothless never comes to be what would become of the people of Berk, of Hiccup and his relationship with others especially with his Father and Astrid(specifically Astrid for the relationship is a-bit confusing from the beginning, at least for me as she kissed him multiple times making him know how “great/good” he is immediately after the discovery of Toothless even thou they virtually had no relationship before the romantic flight yet they weren’t a couple until years later, making me question why she fell for him at all, yes she says the qualities she loves about him were always there but Toothless made it easier for everyone else to see them, that begs the question if Toothless was never shoot down would She give him a Chance at all), with the time line being of him missing the shoot down to the point of the end of the third film(the very end at the reunion) what would the events lead to at the end for all the characters, Hiccup, Stock, and Astrid being the main focus.
I have my own thoughts on the predicament but I require multiple views from others to come to a accurate conclusion

HTTYD trilogy is easily the best animated franchise or just one of the best franchises ever made.
Having that ability to grow up from 11 to 20 with a character like hiccup is so special. These movies never fail to make me emotional and inspired
I was 12 when the first one came out, 16 for the second, and 20 for the last one. These films are part of my own adolescent journey.
I balled my eyes out when I watched this at the theatre. As someone who has watched the movies and the TV show, I was way too invested into HTTYD. Just like as it was said, I grew up watching these movies. These movies were my life. Hiccup and Toothless were my life. When I saw the scene where Hiccup lets go of Toothless...I couldn't do it. I didn't want to let go of the memories I gained over the past 9 years...9 years of my life that were tough but at least I had this to relate to. When I became 18, I didn't really feel like I became an adult, it just never clicked that I was now in the real world. But after watching the final movie at the age of 21, I realized I had to let go of my extreme emotional connection to this world. I had to stop living for more stories about Hiccup and his friends going on their fantastical adventures. I had to stop being immersed in their world...and instead, be immersed in mine...in order to be finally become an adult - be the person I want to see in the future.

I was 19 when the first one came out, as old as Hiccup was by the 2nd film.
Yet despite that, the messages still resonated of each of his arcs. 19, 23, and 27 for me for each of the 3 films.
I watched for the dragons, but always came back for Hiccup and his story.

I got a cat during the time between HTTYD 2 and The Hidden World and ever since that cat has been in my life this franchise became a thousand times more special than it already was. You did a great job with the video, I actually got a bit emotional watching it's just sooo good. This is my favourite trilogy ever, I have watched every movie even the Hidden World about 4 times and they never fail to get me teary-eyed at least once.
Metoo!! I have always loved httyd but after I got a husky during the same period as yours, it’s just become very special to me because toothless really reminds me of my husky. And the fact that toothless has to go makes me super emotional than ever as it reminds me of my husky, that someday I have to let him go too.

Bro, I'm only a minute and a half in and I'm already crying, it has been a while since I've seen the movies, and me and my siblings watched all the shows and everything, so when that music kicked in.... That franchise was my entire childhood. I'm glad this video ended up in my recommended today.

I really love how his father was although tough to him but loved him and picked him up even before hiccup proved himself,that's where this movie became so unique and emotional to me,most movies make the "father" type characters who want something else from their apprentice straight up jerks or mean who will just try to discourage the protagonist instead of helping them at times,these movies have such a heart to them and the characters

I remember seeing the the final moment in the cinema, where their goodbye echoed the beginning of their friendship. The hand to nose touch. The music. It was all the same but so much had changed. The absolute beauty and heartbreak of that moment was so exquisitely crafted, and the only thing I could think in that moment was "you bastards! You know exactly what that moment is going to do to everyone." And then I bawled into my beard in a theatre full of kids

This is one of the few trilogies I think can be labeled perfect, I rank up with LotR and the original Star Wars trilogy for how good these movies were, they still make you emotional no matter how many times you see them
I love those trilogies, but including the Back to the Future trilogy.
Even just in the gap between the first two how to train your dragon movies the characters matured and developed in a very satisfying way especially Hiccup.

I was 9 when “How to Train Your Dragon” premiered, 13 by the time of “How to Train Your Dragon 2”, and 18 when “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” came out. These movies have a special place in my heart because I did not only grow physically and mature with them, but because they also inspire me to be better.
Seeing these masterpieces always makes me hesitant about my own stories and characters, fearing they will never be even close to their quality. But I am so happy to have them so I can learn from them. This trilogy is one of the greatest ever, and worth learning from.

I grew up with these movies. I was 9 years old when the first one came out and I remember my awe and wonder and emotions seeing it as well as the second movie in theaters. So seeing the third one after watching the last 2 again and seeing the TV shows, words cannot describe the bittersweet feeling this left me with. But that being said, this series and story as a whole means the world to me. This video has perfectly described why this is an absolutely fantastic franchise
I watched HTTYD by accident. Well... not an accident. A fantastic coincidence. I was at the time 26 yo, living in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. I went to a shopping mall that had theatres with the firm intention of watching some movie I cannot remember now, but tickets for that movie were out. So, being fan of animation, I decided to check HTTYD. It was a revelation. And together with is sequels, is probably the most amazing trilogy of animated movies ever. They have EVERYTHING. The Hero's Journey, growing up, letting go and a phenomenal story. The conclusion is bittersweet in the best possible way. I still cry when I watch it. Thank you for this video. Very well done.

In 2010, I was 8, I remember seeing the movie in theaters with my family (cousins and all) in 3D. I was always a big fan of dragons and dinosaurs before so I was THRILLED. I remember when we were finished with the movie, we went to my cousins' house and we all pretended to be dragons. I made charms for my friends and got a LOT of toys. Then, the second movie came out when I was 12, a preteen and getting ready to start the next phase of my life. I remember being shocked that they killed Stoic, my parents were shocked too (I think my grandma cried lmao). This movie stands out the most in my memory, since that was the last HTTYD movie I saw in theaters...
I was hesitant to watch the final movie, a lot of people were upset with it online. I was 17 years old, and I was a lot different than my 8 and 12 year old self. I remember when I finally sat down in my living room and watched the film with my parents, I couldn't help but cry at the end. The song "Once There Were Dragons" always brings me a sense of nostalgic bittersweet-ness. These movies mean a lot to me, and I fully intend on if I have kids one day, these movies will be one of the first I make them watch.
I just love this trilogy so much. I basically grew up with it, I was 11 when I saw the first movie in the theatre, 15 when the second movie came out and 20 when watching the last one. It really felt like I grew up with hiccup, toothless and their world.
And despite the bittersweet ending that left me in tears for almost a solid hour after watching it in the theatre. It’s a trilogy I’ll always keep coming back to.
How to Train Your Dragon is my favorite film series of all time. I’ve seen the original countless times. I watched the final entry in the series by myself at the theater on the night of my 19th birthday.

I don't cry at many movies, especially not animated once. But this movie was so well put together that i started caring about it and about it's characters. At the end when they let go i literally started crying-
It's been 4 years since the Hidden World movie was released and I still come back to these movies every single year.
The first movie came out when I was 14, then the second one when I was 18, and the third one when I was 23 so every single part of this story I felt like it was mine. I am forever grateful to the writers and Hiccup for giving me strength through my journey.

This trilogy is one of my favorite of all time. My family saw the second film right after my grandmother's memorial service. While it was difficult at the time, in some small way the film did help us to process the loss of a truly extraordinary woman.

Maturing with the Audience allowed for the HTTYD series to follow the intrests of it's viewers, It showed progress between the films instead of just a new big bad to defeat, I watched the first movie almost every week after I would come home from middle school. This movie taught me to embrace who I am and to not change how I am as a person based on others expectations. Without this film, I dont know where I would've gone in my life. I remember how exciting it was when I got the first tv series on DVD for my birthday, and when the trailer for the netflix series released, I counted down the days to its release. This series will never leave me, and now im not afraid to be who I am. While Hiccup and Toothless' story may be over, the lessons these films taught will inspire countless amounts of people for years to come.

The HTTYD trilogy is right up there with the original SW trilogy and the before trilogy as the greatest trilogies of all time.
I wrote "trilogy" a lot.
I remember watching the first movie when I was just a little kid. Sat down with my mom and dad and was absolutely in love with it. Would play dragons with my friends all the time.
Then watched the second movie, I was in my early teens. Still was in love with the first and obsessed over both of the movies. I watched that movie with my dad in theaters, my parents were divorced now.
Then I watched the third on my 18th birthday. My dad had died and I was getting ready to go to college.
These movies grew with me, and each one came out during a time I needed it. The stories grew as my life did. I couldn’t be more thankful that HTTYD was the series I grew up with, literally.

The first time i heard the line "There were dragons... when I was a boy..." I got goosebumps of excitement and the last time I heard it I was bawling my eyes out. How To Train Your Dragon was aassive inspiration for me in so many ways and I'm glad I was able to be one of theany that grew up alongside Hiccup
There is no other franchise that has affected my life as much as HTTYD. The only one that has come close is the MCU. The story of Hiccups uprising from tribe outcast to the chief of the same tribe really make me reflect over my own life in the greatest way. I never identified with the princes from Disneys animation, so Hiccup has become that rolemodel for me
The third movie made me cry with the final departure. I'm not one who cries in movies... but I was crying out of sheer happiness. The story came to a beautiful ending
Honestly this hit every spot for me, I'm now 21, and the letting go theme has been very big in my life recently, the friends I once saw every day, I only see once a year, getting my own appartment and my first professional job really hit the " becoming an adult" theme a year back. And now letting go is a big step for me, and like always HTTYD released at a perfect time... almost like it was meant for me. Knowing this movie was the last of its trilogy was really hard for me to accept, as every movie always helped me, and made me realize something, everytime big events were happening in my life. As a comment said earlier, I see both hiccup and toothless as my own friends and knowing that this was the last movie, makes me feel like I have to let go, and that's hard, but so is life, and that's how life goes. HTTYD has helped me through alot things in my life but I'm also glad I got to grow up with it, it will always hold a place in my heart. And now this is where everyone's separate journey begins, I guess. Just glad I found a video that describes how I feel about this movie to a tee, so keep it up👍 you just gained a subscriber 🤗
People never see where I’m coming from when I say this series is the best of Dreamworks, besting even giants like Shrek or the sequel.
I was a bit young at the time of the first movies release (4 at the time) i dont have a great memory of when i saw the movies. I believe i may have seen the first just a bit after it released. But im almost 100% sure i saw the second in the cinemas which i am ever so grateful for. I was a bit young at the time for the story to resonate but looking back im so glad i was born when i was.
To grow and let go alongside this trilogy its sad for that to be the last time we see these characters but as in the video..the memory is always there, the swell of the first flight on toothless, the earth shattering feeling of stoics death, and the scene they say goodbye.
Really all i can say is thank you to all the people that made this movie happen, and made it great.
