    Australia and UK have reciprocal health care agreements. So if you are a UK resident who previously stayed in the UK prior to coming to Australia, you have access to Australia's healthcare system. When you get a Medicare card, you are for all intents and purposes the same as an Australian Resident. GP visits used to be free. But because the government hasn't updated bulk billing fees, GPs now charge a fee. Some of that fee is eligible for rebate under Medicare. Example, I recently went to GP. Cost of 15 minute consult was $75 but rebate was 39.75 which they can process on the spot if you have an Austalian Debit card. So out of pocket was $35ish. For more involved medical procedures, the cost is largely free. For example, I had to go to the emergency department of the eye and ear hospital that same day. Waited 5 hours. But the cost of the visit and follow on consults with the eye doctors cost me $0. Ambulances are not covered under Medicare, nor are medicines (critical ones are obviously subsidised)

    I honestly would love to do it like you guys - backpacking, settle somewhere for some time and then travel again, maybe settle in another city. Apart from the fact that it's exhausting to live in hostels for a year I also think it's nice to stay longer in one place and really get to know a city 😊

    It is a pity you haven't checked out Perth. Perth statistically has the most significant British expat community of any city in Australia, which might be saying something. I personally prefer Perth and Melbourne as the 2 places to live and I've lived in both, but I'm in Melbourne for certain reasons right now. The whole South West of WA has a lot to offer, but appreciate that you're on a reasonably tight budget. You can still get airline tickets over there for under $200 if you are smart. If you were ever considering settling in Australia and buying a house etc. it might be worth taking a look at Perth. It probably looks isolated on a map but it honestly doesn't feel much more different than any other place in the country.

    The wet season in Queensland is from Decembber through to March. Basically the whole summer. The best time to visit Queenland, if you are not used to humidity and hotweather, is in winter.

    Honestly rental applications are not first come, first served in Australia. Agents will almost always choose tenants who have secure work and a solid rental history, so I think you’d find it difficult to find a place even if you were the first to apply. Also the cost of rent never includes bills and most places are completely unfurnished so you’d have to buy furniture. The best bet for travellers is to move into an existing home with other flatmates, and even then most will want you to stay at least 6 months.

    Summer is the WORST time to visit anywhere north of Brisbane., it is hot, humid and cyclone season ... the wet season. Best to do the southern states in summer and the north in winter. Winter in Brisbane and up the east coast to Cairns, Cooktown and the Great Barrier Reef is like summer in Europe. Remember the 2032 Summer Olympics are being held in Brisbane in July 2032, July is the middle of the Aussie winter. Winter in Brisbane and Queensland is fabulous - max daytime temps in mid 20s°C and crystal clear blue skies as it is the dry season. It can get cool at night though.
    I'm a Queenslander who has lived in Melbourne for quite a few years - summer in Melbourne and winter in Brisbane is the best lifestyle.

    i always thought the farm work requirement for an extra year was really tough. if farmers want workers they should pay them more and improve their facilities.
    its not fair to enlist back packers. let them stay as long as they want. better for us ,better for them.

    On the working holiday visa from the UK, do you need to change employers / jobs after 6 months? I read that in the guidelines but some people are saying it's not the case so unclear

  • @daaavyjones
    @daaavyjones ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It’s so interesting that in the UK bills etc are included in the price of an apartment?! How do they know how much you’ll use so they can factor it into the price? In Aus I’ve never heard of somewhere (other than some short-term sublets where people are trying to add incentives to take a room for a short period) where bills are factored into rent ahead of time, that would def be a huge plus if that’s how they do it in other places 😊

    • @georginaevans3607
      @georginaevans3607 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don’t think that bills are included in the price of an apartment largely. Some include it in the cost but then the cost is higher because of that.

    • @Cupcakiiiii
      @Cupcakiiiii ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only tell you how it is in Germany because here some bills are also included in the rent but this is just a lump sum (usually dependent on how much you or the previous tenant used last year) and at the end of the year you'll have to pay the rest if you used more or you'll get your money back if you used less :)

    • @runaway1996
      @runaway1996 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Bills are almost never included in the price of a flat in the UK, she just doesn't know because she has never rented...

    • @MollyThompsonx_
      @MollyThompsonx_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey - so no they are quite often separate in the UK as they are here, but I know that when you look online at UK rent it'll specify that bills AREN'T included, here MOSTLY when looking on Flatmates especially for short term lets, it'll state that they are, or that they partly are, however when we'd turn up to view the flat they'd say completely otherwise, it was this that was more of a shock. I also don't know what the policies on short term leasing are in the UK as I've never done it, I haven't rented anything other than student accom, which obviously does cover all costs, and also had friends rent flats but for a full year, which is more straight forward than leasing somewhere for 1/3 of a year because the cost of bills are often worked out annually (for them at least) - so here it was a little different and we just didn't really know what to expect haha!

    • @sarahm6099
      @sarahm6099 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They are never included in the UK unless you live in student accommodation at a uni. And most of the time it won't say bills are included either because it's just a given they won't be. You just need to set those things up like WiFi and gas/electricity/council tax when you move in.

    Does your coffee shop job allow you to apply for a second year visa like is it class as “specified subclass” work. As I’m looking and also want to move to Melbourne (got my visa etc) but it says you can only work in northern or remote areas and it’s so confusing to me xxx

    • @MollyThompsonx_
      @MollyThompsonx_  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no it doesn't count as regional work/towards a second year, the rules are a bit complicated but basically hospitality only counts towards a second year visa if you're doing it north of the tropic of capricorn at the moment (which is around about Airlie Beach and anywhere north of there) - although they are in the process of changing the visa rules if you're coming in on a UK passport so definitely keep your eyes peeled!!x

      I really think it's because of the pandemic, the issue isn't that there's more backpackers, it's that theres less places to stay/less tour companies operating because a lot of them closed down - I think actual tourist numbers aren't quite back up to what they were pre-covid JUST yet, because this is the first summer of travel in Aus since the boarders opened it's just been a little chaotic!!x

    There really shouldn't be any barriers preventing people of British heritage from moving around freely within the British Empire. When my ancestors came to Australia, they never would have conceived that their offspring couldn't permanently go back to the mother country in making that choice. If you put this to them at the time, I honestly wonder if they would have come out in the first place. That was a time when Britain needed Australia and Australia needed Britain. I'm so glad that we're working on building things back up again since the UK left the socialist EU. I hope Australia will keep voting down the stupid republic idea so that we can concentrate on fostering stronger relations with the UK and other Commonwealth nations.
