Indonesia has a long tradition of guitar making. It is not well known in the West. Bromo is not owned by a foreign company, but by an Indonesian entrepreneur who employs some artisans with experiences in luthiery. 😮
A lot of countries have long traditions building all kinds of musical instruments, so that's no surprise. I have owned, and own, acoustic and electric guitars made in USA, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Spain, China, Japan, Mexico and Taiwan. Well known US brands are produced abroad as well, in China, Japan, Korea, Mexico and Malaysia. Maybe other ones as well. Great finger picking by the way! My style ...
It is far more than a beginning guitar! As a former music teacher I can tell you that if you get a cheap instrument you are going to be fighting the instrument. This review by Justin is spot on. This is a great guitar for a great price.
My favorite guitar, of my two dozen musical instruments, is 50 years old. I bought it around 1975. It is on its third set of tuners, new bone nut, neck broken twice and reset, second bridge, third bone saddle, and the finish had worn off, so I painted it green and black (NC lacquer) with gold pine trees and flourishes by my wife. Cost me $25 back in 1975, all solid woods. It is now ugly but plays and sounds wonderful. Looks aren't everything. It also still smells slightly of campfire. An added bonus. BTW: Don't get me wrong, I want a Bromo 5CE, it's just that my wife would divorce me, and I would starve to death. Priorities, doncha know...
@@rideroll9609yes they sure do,I brought mine from a music/works shop here in Hamilton,NZ, mine was just the Dreadnought S/Top,no electrics, it really compares to high/end acoustics 😊
I bought one after seeing Justin Johnson's review. It was the only Bromo BAR5CE in stock I could find anywhere in the USA online (Rondo Music). I was expecting to return it but I was blown away with the quality, the all solid wood construction, Amara ebony back/sides and fretboard, mahogany neck with 2 ebony strips, ornate abalone fret markers/sound hole and entire top edge and mother of pearl headstock logo. It has flame maple binding on the entire body. It also included a nice quality padded gig bag! After a week of playing it opened up and now sounds incredible and too good to be true for only $499.00 !!!👍
I have two seagull guitars that my dad gave me. I really like them. Not that im any sort of great player but theyre the right size for being short and having small hands. And they sound pretty nice.
I bought this guitar Bromo BAT4CE last August 2023 and I loved it ever since. I definitely would not call it an entry level guitar just because of the price. There's also a Solid Mahogany version of this called Bromo BAT4MCE
If you're starting out, I think was goes a long way is first trying the different sizes of acoustic guitar bodies. I think you'll figure out pretty quickly what size feels most comfortable to you. Then from there I wouldn't get anything above $500. The most important thing: take it to a luthier and get a good setup.
The fact that this isn't just a fancy nice looking peice of craftsmanship at this price, it sounds the part too, which I feel like is something that just isn't common in guitars, both electric, & acoustic.
My first acoustic guitar was picked up by my step dad at a yard sale for $2 in 1974 and given to me. I'd never picked up a guitar up. I was hooked. For Christmas in 1976 I got Hohner and I think my folks paid $100. I wonder what it would have costed now! 😲 Plus some lessons at a music store. I still remember my teacher. Still have the Hohner but only play once in a while. I'm rusty to the point where I'm a beginner again. There's some muscle memory, but... I need to get the guitar out more.
Maybe I can help you get back into it again, I made a practice channel to help people keep playing and I'm inviting you over : ) Bring out the Hohner !
The pick up sounds great, of course the fact that Justin is playing it makes a huge difference. Thank you Justin for the great and honest overview you provided.
By the way, I wanted to emphasize a key concern I have that you addressed really nicely! I've heard that playability is super important for a newbie in order to be willing to pick the guitar up and play it regularly. My sense is that there can be a real disconnect between playability and affordability, so I just wanted to mention, that although I love a great sounding guitar; getting a guitar that is both playable and affordable is a big deal and I thank you very much for addressing that quality of this guitar!
You can take any guitar to a look luthier for a good setup. Might require adjustments to the saddle or nut, or making one from blanks, but it can really mean the difference.
It all sounded good, I'd like to have heard a bit more about the action but I guess that's adjustable. I've never bought a guitar I didn't have to adjust to get the lowest, clean action. Too bad I don't need any more guitars, I'd buy it. Thanks Justin
Thru my headphones it sounds great. It's also beautiful to this guitarists at the tender age of 63 who's been playing since 1977. . It sounds really good and looks like a much more expensive guitar! Ok totally agree. ❤
Very impressive guitar for the price, and a great demo. To me it sounds balanced and articulate, though a just a touch more midrange-forward than I prefer. Side note, thank you for explaining the issues that come from buying a cheaply made guitar! I stress this to beginners all the time, that a guitar that is harder to play than it should be and doesn't play in tune will discourage them from continuing on their journey because it makes them feel like they're doing something wrong. In reality they're just playing a toy disguised as a musical instrument, so it will never sound musical. I never tell someone they need something expensive, but I do emphasize the importance of getting something worth what you pay for it.
I'll have to see if I can find one. Last year I bought 2 consecutively serial numbered Gary Benet guitars ,also Indonesian made, wow what a great pair, all for $121 to my door.

Great video, love the guitar. Agree wished I bought a GS Mini straight away, would have saved a lot of pain and grief when I began learning. This Bromo guitar will make a great companion for the Mahogany GS Mini.
Man Justin... What a great touch you have sir! I haven't seen to many guitars especially in that price range with solid ebony back and sides. From what I've heard it's kinda difficult to work with. I know certain boutique luthiers have used it, and I even remember it in a couple Breedlove models. Impressive how they've kept the price so low. I assume off shores and lots of CNC, which I am actually totally cool with as it gets a lot of bang for buck in the hands of my students! Great review!

Actually listening for it, it has a very nice sound, and the only thing I would mention is that I find it a bit bass heavy. A very minor thing for a guitar of this price range otherwise its a great piece of guitar
Yeah that’s a sweet looking axe. I like the white on the headstock, looks like a snow capped mountain. Really nice accent to the rest of the fretboard. Might just have to test drive one of these somewhere!

@justinjohnsonlive I appreciate that heads up! Wasn't joking either. Immediately clicked the link and ordered. There isn't a single guitar I've been that quick to decide on in many many many years. But guitars of this spec and quality for $500 are virtually unheard of these days. They all have their heads shoved up their tears on prices now. Everything had already doubled pre COVID from when I started playing. Not to mention the big brand name guitar builders and their super duper hard ball drops on quality over the last 20 years. So needless to say I'm stoked dude.
@@Fire_Marshall_BillYes, these Bromo price/value are very similar to what Epiphone Masterbilt used to be once and what the Greg Bennett Samick used to do, you may still find some used I guess but not sure if new.
I just got this guitar but the $270 version (BAT4CE model) It’s exactly the same but a few small things. It’s feels and plays just like my 214 Taylor, and matches them with build quality. All for under $300. I was amazed. It’s a legit $800 to $1k guitar all day.
Luna also has some great guitars for dirt cheap. Also, the Enya nova go travel guitar. It’s carbon fiber, meaning it’s a tank, and the only guitar id ever trust to be shipped by amazon.
That video is perfectly timed: I was searching for a new but affordable guitar with good low ends (mahogany and co) and this one is a good one. Plus, the brand is called Bromo and makes references to the volcano it is named after, perfect for a learning volcanologist.
Good balanced review. If you are a beginner or novice you need the best quality instrument you can justify. This instrument seems to hit a sweet spot between quality and value.
Love it, but for another reason. When I was a kid I hiked up Gunung Bromo. Froze my knees and got altitude sick, but still one of the greatest places in the world to visit. So now you have to go to Jawa and do a sunrise video on Gunung Bromo! All the best!
The pickup only sound was really nice, even if the bass strings were a little accentuated. Be curious to know more about the action and how it came setup. Also, how does this compare to the budget Cort? I believe they have a guitar in this price range? Good review, Justin 👍
I have an Ibanez Performance PF5 from the 90s, made in Korea. It's only a solid top, with laminated back and sides and it is one of the best sounding acoustic guitars I have ever played on, and I have played many high end guitars. Sometimes you just get lucky.
I try to make this point often, as it's surprising how many even first experienced players haven't realized yet that this is a 100% real phphenomenon. For electric guitars its very easy to consistently duplicate identical sounding/playing instruments over and overvwith practically zero variation. But for acoustic guitars, this is not the case at all. Most have described at least one experience with playing a high end guitar, and just not hearing/feeling that tone or "magic" that the guitar has given the model a reputation of having a exceptional sound. What they don't realize is they likely experienced a "dud" (that or a poorly humidified floor model with old, cheap strings that most guitars ship with from the factory). But by the very nature of construction, every acoustic guitar is unique, each and every one. 2 guitars of the exact same make/model will nearly always have some slight (but noticeable by experienced ears) differences in how they sound & play....and there exists the possibility that some are born VERY different from thier siblings! If you are lucky enough to find one of the unicorns, don't hesitate....buy it. There is a very real phenomenon that occurs where a production guitar by pure chance receives exceptionally well matched cuts of wood and the bracing and/or construction joins just happen to fall exactly where a master Luther would choose when custom voicing his creation. Sometimes the stars just align, and results in pure magic that is impossible to replicate even if you tried again a thousand times. I'm lucky enough to own one. I hope everyone who finds one recognizes what they have in their hands...be it a $400 dollar "beginner" model...or a high end build. Buy it ig you are able to and cherish it. You may not find another for many years.
Very nice review , the guitar sounds great, I wish I knew what the distance was from E string to E string. I have been playing an old Guild for so long I am just used to that E to E spacing of the Guild. Its amazing what the smallest change in that spacing can do.
As someone who has researched a lot of guitars I have to agree. Solid wood for 499 is a good deal especially with all the chrome. And it sounds really good.
I recently purchased Martin guitar strings extra light(80/20) and I was really impressed of How much it helped my guitar tone , so especially when you buy a guitar they put cheap strings on them .
Really impressive 'Bromo' Acoustic Guitar., and... superbly exhibited (always enjoy Justin's interpretive tunes)... BUT... although agree with sentiments concerning 'solid' Woods and Tones... (generally)... disagree with sentiments regarding laminated woods... Have several laminated woods Acoustic Guitars (Back & Sides, with solid Tops) and would not sell or swap them... They have unique Tones and Projection and totally satisfying for whatever genres I wish to express. Cheers !
Honestly, great times to pick up the guitar. You can get some very decent models for 200-500. Ive been only getting guitars in this price range for a while now and they are all doing a good job.
If anyone is looking for a good beginner acoustic, I recently played a $399 Breedlove at a music store and it was very nice for that price. Also, I had an Alvarez AD60 that I paid about $375 for, and it was really nice, too. Now I have a Taylor and know better, though, lol!

I just got this guitar but the $270 version (BAT4CE model)
It’s exactly the same but a few small things.
It’s feels and plays just like my 214 Taylor, and matches them with build quality.
All for under $300. I was amazed.
It’s a legit $800 to $1k guitar all day.
It's nice, and your pretty good player..keep it up!
Awesome playing and all
Luna also has some great guitars for dirt cheap.
That is too perfect that you’re studying volcanos! Did you manage to pick one up before they sold out on Amazon?
Let’s face it guys, this dude could play a 20 dollar toy guitar with plastic strings and make it sound good.
Hello! Thank you so much. Honestly, it seems like any guitar would sound amazing in your hands. Great work, man!
Thanks, I appreciate that! 😊
I love it , been playing my Alvarez Mahogany for 32 years and it has that nice sound , cost 499.00 in 1992.
Nice Guitar 🎸,
Beautiful Playing 👍 !!
Unbelievable that they can sell this guitar for that price. Of course, this guy can make any guitar sound great.
The best review I’ve seen on TH-cam, best info for sure, thanks 👴🏼👍🏼🇦🇺
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Amazing it came straight out of the box perfectly in tune.🤔
Good balanced review. If you are a beginner or novice you need the best quality instrument you can justify. This instrument seems to hit a sweet spot between quality and value.
Love it, but for another reason. When I was a kid I hiked up Gunung Bromo. Froze my knees and got altitude sick, but still one of the greatest places in the world to visit.
So now you have to go to Jawa and do a sunrise video on Gunung Bromo! All the best!
That sounds incredible! I'll have to add it to my travel list! 🌎
Great review
I am not sure how good I could make that bromo sound because you are such an incredible guitarist
How can I despise someone and admire them at the same time! Man, that sounds awesome. You rock man!
Yep no need to drop 3 grand on a guitar nowadays
3:25 loving it; do you play gigs anywhere?
Looks great and sounds great too. Sadly not available here in Australia. I’d love to try it. Cheers
I get the feeling Justin can make any guitar sound nice, :)
If anyone is looking for a good beginner acoustic, I recently played a $399 Breedlove at a music store and it was very nice for that price. Also, I had an Alvarez AD60 that I paid about $375 for, and it was really nice, too. Now I have a Taylor and know better, though, lol!
Wow, I was surprised! Hard to believe you get that much for such a low price. Great review and playing too!
Can you make a video playing the guitar as you usually do ?
Thanks Justin for promoting a great guitar even though it’s not pricy.
And may I say, love your playing. Super great. Thanks.
Bromo guitar from Indonesia nice review dude nice tone....
