I think sr pelo said it best, it even applies to fictional characters: "Mmmmm, i dont like my house. Im going to change it!" "WHAT!??! YOU CANT CHANGE YOUR HOUSE!" "BUT ITS MY HOUSE! I KNOW WHAT I WANT!"
@somethingdiabolical3894 saying that someone doesn't understand the trans issue just because their a certain race is idiotic you fucking neanderthal , also, if a character literally changes gender, I think its pretty safe to assume that their rainbow clothing is supposed to represent a pride flag, and even if it doesn't, that really doesn't matter all the much, you fucking scallywag ass buffoon.
as a trans girl who doesn't have the energy to voice train, it is infact EXTREMELY nice to feel represented and to be thusly affirmed that i am infact still as much of a girl as anyone else.
One of my favorite (probably not intentional) trans girls is Plum Puddin’ from the 80s strawberry shortcake. She was originally a he and was primarily pared with another character whose name was TN Honey, both of them being the smart characters, TN leaning more toward inventing and Plum being book smart. They then both proceeded to disappear from media for 2 years and only Plum came back, and was now a girl. In characterization she’s shown to be more confident than before. Loved the video!
they initially said it was a mistranslation because of the con moment of him signing the "trans rights" poster of bridget from like 10+ years ago. he didnt speak english then and the PR had to step forward and exclaim that because he couldnt read english, he didnt understand what trans rights meant and was (at the time) not a representation of his political beliefs.
@@haplesstreehe actually writes them in Japanese and his interpreter (and the EN VO lead for Strive) translates them! His own English is actually kinda, broken, but that doesn't change anything about how incredibly similar the EN and JP texts are in- and out-of-game, and how obviously strong the chain of trust with the in-house localization team is.
Family guy has one of my favorite ftm trans representations. Meg becomes Ron in an episode where they show a possible future and his gender is more or less respected by the family even though they still hate him.
Another thing that gets me about the whole Bridget discourse is that the sum of Daisuke Dishwater's work is completely ignored. He's been putting in characters that buck traditional sex and gender roles since the first game. Just with the characters back in Strive, Anji is a himbo that straight up dances on his opposition. Baiken has used masculine pronouns since her inception. TESTAMENT was the character who came before Brig, ya'know, the forklift certified enby and their emergency demon thots. Not to mention Daisuke himself said he's gender non-conforming. None of this is new.
Gender queer people would never write gender queet and/or trans characters. Everyone knows you're supposed to just be completely erased from the equation if your anything bit cishet and preferably male and/or white because clearly (white) cishet men are the only ones capable of actually taking their intent and explaining it correctly with the proper terms the -superior- cishet men can understand; so they can tell us that trans people arent ever real when a someone who is GNC writes as exclipt a trans character they can manage to despite strict and bigoted standards required by their boss. I have no clue if I went all too ironic and the fact that i look at r/transgendercirclejerk is my only defense like fuckimg hj also fuck fixing the typos I'm not being too serious anyway
Also, Baiken is big gender for me. F2M/NB with big tits and gender removed because [TRAUMA]??? lemme gobble up that shit [GOBBLEGOBBLEGOBBLEGOBBLEGOBBLEGOBBLEGOBBLE]
Bridget is actually the reason I came out. Was playing ggst w my dad, and I was like “Yknow she’s trans right?” “Nah.” “Yeah I’m trans too.” “Cool.” Now, I’m beginning my first month on estrogen. W Celeste moment
Reading Daisuke's interview about Bridget's identity was very nice. It's clear that people insisting it's a mistranslation never read it, because he spends a lot of time saying in multiple different ways that she was designed to be trans but that he didn't think that would fly with the higher-ups at the time, and that he's always cared about showing the people who never get to see themselves as heroes in media that they *can* be heroes too
That was probably just him lying tbh Im not saying its not what he believes now, im saying its not what he believed when he made Bridget, since there are older interviews of him saying "a boy dressed like a girl would be funny"
I tried playing one of the older gears and loved the aesthetic, but struggled with the more advanced controls/moves. Now I wanna go back and really deep dive into this lore. This is sooo good.
A character a lot like Bridget is Marina the Occultist from Fear and Hunger: Termina She has a very similar backstory, having been raised as a girl to avoid her being groomed into a self destructive life of studying dark magic, and just decided to stick with being a girl when she grew up and moved out because she was more comfortable that way
Fear and Hunger as a series is based af, not only we have Marina, but we also have gay characters, enbies, bi characters and so on. I'm so happy that more people are checking out the games, they deserve more attention.
@@GrandeRampel we stan cahara and marina in this household 🥰😍 🏳🌈🏳⚧💖❤ the part that i love about fear and hunger the most is how well the creator of the game represents lgbtq people, but also how it will indiscriminately cause suffering and death to everyone equally finns are just on another level man
I will always love the fact people get mad at trans people and gay people ONLY. Cause when brisket released everyone when nuts. Now tetament on the other hand
I worked a whole lot of diverse jobs from missionary to programmer. I have learned humanity is a spectrum so when I see disabled people in apocalypse movies or trans people in video games, I jump for joy. Humanity is a marvelous thing and I love seeing it shown off in the media we humans create.
One bit of representation I don't hear many people talking about is Anita Bidet from The Oblongs. On paper she could have been grossly offensive, with hairy legs, a gravelly voice, and the misfortune of being written in the early 2000's, but she's actually pretty awesome. Anita's a close personal friend of main character Pickles, serving as her confidant when times get rough and is even seen hanging out with the entire family as an equal. Does she pass? Is she pretty enough for the beauty standards of society? Anita don't care, she couldn't give less of a shit. She is who she is and she makes ZERO apologies for it. I love her confidence in herself and how she's treated as a regular, everyday part of their society on that show. Even if the series is pretty obscure, I think Anita definitely deserves to be recognized for her contribution to trans representation in media. 🙂🏳⚧
Plus, _everyone_ from the Oblongs who doesn't live in the rich area looks weird or ugly bc they literally live in a nuclear waste dump, so she doesn't really stand out much. Pickles is the leading woman and she's completely bald (and tbh I don't remember them making many jokes about that, either.)
The Oblongs is honestly an underrated, though dated show with genuinely heartwarming narratives. What makes you isn't your appearance, but what is in your heart (from an anatomical point, what that is is hopefully blood; but I digress).
I remember seeing the first Ida episode when I didn't really understand what being trans was. Going back to it now... yeah it does feel pretty rough. But there is one joke that I still think is pretty baller where Quagmire asks after the surgery "Is he gonna be okay?" only for thr doctor to go "No... but she's gonna be just fine!"
yknow birdo and yoshi really bring me to question the biology of their species, if yoshi is male but produce eggs asexually, then whats the main difference between a female yoshi, do both lay eggs but still have male and female parts to inseminate their own eggs? is it like a snail thing were a partner needs to fertlise the other before their female?
Not exactly the same but reminds me of that one monogendered race from Mass Effect. They're all fine with being perceived female and use feminine pronouns, but there's no "males" and they reproduce asexually (I think?) Either way, I find that kinda thing fun in fiction.
I love the mistranslation argument that they used because it literally makes no sense. If you go and look at the Japanese dialogue, it's the same. It's literally the same dialogue, but in slightly _more_ clear terms. I think they just see Japanese media and think "oh it must be the last bastion against wokeism" or whatever even though there are tons of Japanese media that are incredibly "woke".
fr. like, what about the whole yuri and yaoi genres? they're girls in love and boys in love, and those genres are quite prevalent in japanese media, so some people either don't look hard enough or are selectively ignoring stuff they don't like
@@mizukittyakinyama I feel like yuri and yaoi are a little different because they are treated more as fantasy than reality. They're treated more like an unrealistic genre and concept. Like if Americans only accepted lesbians when they were watching lesbian pornography. Sure there are some yaoi and yuri media that are actually very accepting, but their audience will not typically see it as more than just a fantastical manga genre
It's so funny cause these bitches know shit about Japan. They're just a bunch of weebs who think Japan is their fantasy land where feminism and other "woke" shit doesn't exist with the additional "value" of having a low age of consent I hate weeabos so much its fucking unreal -_-
@@mark-gj4mb ofc depends and against japan was kinda accepting of queer people in the past in their isolation period before they become so westernize that they abandoned the ideas of queer or smth similar to be like other western country it's tragic but I can't blame them when the world fucking racist on the Japanese people
The problem with trans protagonists is that if you dedicate a large portion of the story to their experience, you alienate most of your audience. But if you ignore that side of them, it's really hardly trans representation and they basically might as well be cis.
Lmfao I’m trans myself (I’m a trans male) I wanna come out to my parents but I’m to scared until I saw the intro I remember my parents showing me the movie on Netflix and when Ralph came out as trans and my parents didn’t care that we were watching a movie mostly targeted for kids and a character was transgender XD ( they may get upset that I’m trans though)
be safe! id only come out once i already have my own house or place to live away from them to avoid any possibilities of physical abuse or being kicked out at a young age
as a trans person, I totally relate to not having time or be too afraid/unconfortable doing voice training (my case), some people think its easy, takes no time and you REQUIRE a high pitch voice, which is totally unrealistic, ive met cis woman with deep voices before and no one says that to them, holding us to this unrealistic standards just because we are trans is so fked love the video!
It’s definitely not easy, but fwiw I did mine in an intensive month where I never used my old voice. And the method was specifically designed to get back to close to your old pitch, but with a different, less-chesty, timbre. There was only a brief time focused on head voice as part of the process, and it was a fairly short video (like 10 min) that you could just refer back to every few days. Totally unlike all the modern ones where there’s 20+ hours of videos in each person’s “course”, and they act like the goal is to maintain the highest head-voice you can _forever._ Sadly the video I used has been removed by the uploader ages ago :( so I don’t blame younger trans folks for finding it all too intimidating since that crap is all that’s left. Anyway, adding this in after a wee proofread. The basic method was to “squeeze” your upper-chest-voice (your actual neutral pitch, middle of the register) to dampen the lower undertones (like a high-pass filter). At first that practice involved going up through falsetto to adjust the harmonics automatically to get a feel for the “squeeze”, then slowly bringing it back down while staying “squeezed”. But quickly moved-onto just “squeezing” more and less strongly, without going through a pitch modulation first. Of course the video had audible examples of what you were trying for and how to avoid injuring your throat muscles and stuff, which sadly simply can’t be summed-up over text. But I don’t know, it might still be helpful or interesting. I definitely agree that there’s far too much prioritisation of pitch going on nowadays. While I specifically wanted a voice like contralto vocalist ladies, haha. (And to be honest I’m still pleased with the results 13, 14 years on.)
I was working with this guy and we were talking about gg strive and our mains. I main Bridget and was talking about how I have the trans color mod for her, and he was trying to tell me she was always a girl and the people saying she's trans are wrong, to which I informed him of her background from xx and that the people saying she's trans are arcsys themselves
to be fair saying "she was always a girl" is aprtially true XPsince, well, she IS trans. though he probably meant to say "she was always a guyyyy" becausse people jsut do not know what the right words are even if they're words they're trying to say to make a dumb point
i hate those people as a feminine dude, they made me hate the word femboy even more. they're homophobic and transphobic yet they fetishize any dude that shows any fem trait, while being extremely homophobic? i dont understand their weird chaser brains. i wish people would just leave us alone and leave transfems alone
@@mrlampy I mean they still do, most people still identify (and tag) Bridget as femboy instead of trans, they're just mad because... Idk, honestly as you said it changes nothing about the character, if anything is good that they confimed she's trans since that mean her search for her identity now comes full circle.
reminds me of my friend going on character ai and asking kris from deltarune what their agab is (he will generate a new response if they say they were afab 💀)
I mean to be completely honest should we even believe what these people are arguing? they argue that it's femboy erasure AND that it's a mistranslation, so like which one is it? or do these people not actually care what they are saying but just hate trans people? (pretty sure innuendo studios has made a video talking about how these "people" use this tactic 4 years ago title is "The Alt-Right Playbook: The Card Says Moops" I think.)
I’m a trans woman and it’s really annoying when people find out I am and then they find out I like Mario they then assume my favorite character is birdo
honestly the best part of the bridget controversy is it introduced me to the guilty gear franchise because before this i only knew it as "that game that is sometimes referenced in memes" but now i love brisket in all her glory
@@Sireingtonthats why i stopped going by that term, originally it was fine other than the people who misused it to be bigoted towards transfem people, but now its just used by fetishizers a lot and makes me feel gross about myself, so i just say feminine dude. i also dislike the term roseboy bc it just sounds a bit dumb to me/just doesnt feel comfortable to me but its better than how the representation of the word femboy is doing 😭
ya see, I didnt really know who bridget was before she was finally written trans, but then second the internet started exploding over the creator saying that they intended to make her trans from the start, she instantly went from completely irrelevant to me to "omg brisket guilty gear-?!" and I just think the amount of power basket gained overnight is impressive
I realised something else funny about the Bridget Debacle: some people point to ehr being raised as a girl as being a bad thing and why she can't possibly be trans because its offensive....but then you realise "but wait isn't that backstory meant to explain why 'he'dresses like a girl" and yet that doesn't bothr the naysayers at all. So...its bad for bridget to be 'forced' into being 'trans'....but being 'forced' to dress like a girl in the first place is jsut 'femboy rep'? I'm seeing some double standards here....
@@MMMMorshu1 In a vacuum, yes. However the story kinda of goes out of it's way to tell us that Bridget didn't dislike it, only that she disliked her parents feeling awful about forcing her dress like a girl/be a girl in public. That's kind of the entire crux behind why Bridget tried to be manly in the first place, so that her parents wouldn't feel bad about what they forced her to do for her own safety
It also doesn't help it's Japanese. In so many stories they have a trope of being forced to dress/present as the other gender. Of course, most of the time the character is still cis at the end of the day. If I'm not wrong, she was not explicitly stated as trans in the beginning. So she was in this weird character limbo that you get with that kinda character until it's explicitly said (if ever). In an ideal world, she woulda been trans from the beginning and wouldn't have such questionable reasons for her being feminine to begin with. She could have just, you know, liked to dress like that and you coulda kept the trying to prove her manhood because of how she presents. The reason this trope is so prevalent in Japanese media is a cultural thing. "Corssdressing" or presenting as another gender is a lot more normalized in general than being gay. Which is weird to think about, how trans people are more accepted in Japan than gay people.
The moment Bridget's story throughout Guilty Gear became known, you could just feel the positivity and care ooze from the people posting fanart or just talking about her, relating to her and being seen through her. And even the people that had actually played the past games seemed to appreciate the arc she went through and how it related to the general theme of Strive. It makes me happy to know that there are characters like these being added to media nowadays, including the rest mentioned in the video.
One of my favorite trans woman representations in media has to be Granblue Fantasy, that doesn't have one but TWO fantastic trans women. First of is Cagliostro who looks like this adorable lady who is revealed to be a centuries old alchemist who hated her original body, so she made one new all for herself exactly how she wanted it. It is very explicit she was AMAB and said "fuck that" and she both plays out her adorable persona while still being one of the most powerful people in universe. Second is Ladiva who is part of the fantasy anime race that exist only for waifu/husbando reasons (the woman are very short and with huge boobs while the men are 2 meters tall and build like brick walls) so it's pretty obvious she is trans. At first glance she looks like a distasteful joke but then you read her story and events and you notice that Ladiva is actually a fantastic character who loves everyone and everyone loves and I want her to give me a big hug and tell me everything will be ok. So this game has 2 fantastic trans woman, with a lot of chracter, who have lots of content in game, and who both were chosen to be on the fighting game from the hundreds of other characters. Best part is that they get a short story of both of them interacting in which Cagliostro offers Ladiva to make her a new body and Ladiva tells her she is happy as she is as she has already learned to love herself as she is and just remembering it makes me emotional 🥺
Actually a good one, i like Ladiva when i first saw her, she actually feel likeable, idk about cagliostro (i dont like short people (i say that, as im one myself))
As an guilty gear experienced player, and otaku, and as an asian(not a Japanese, a korean), The transition of Bridget story is a little bit rough, but, "OK" level. She was forced to be a girl, and She said that "I`m a boy, not a girl!" in previous titles because that town where she was born has a bullshit myth about twins bringing doomsday. And now, the myth was resolved, She accept that she feel herself as a girl. Her catch phrase was "But I`m a boy!" so it looks rough to me, But in my humble opinion, That is "OK" level. Many people don`t know what is his/her/their gender, and denial is not a rare thing. And she now don`t have to tell everybody to being who she really is, but she can ask herself who she is. And this was not a first time on Guilty Gear. They did same things on "Testament" previously. "Testament" was a male, and also forced to be a "gear"(which means super-human in this university, so "Guilty Gear" is like "Guilty X-man" okay?) and his sex is gone. "Testament" is not a male nor a female, though "Testament" was a male so behaved like a male. In 2022 march, "Testament" came back in this tilte(Strive) but "Testament" looks like a female and acts like a female. And "Testament" says "I don`t have to protect "dizzy"(=character name) now, so I don`t care with my behavior. I just have a good time". I think that Guilty Gear`s approach is very intersting, because yes they were both gimmicky characters rather than sexual/gender representaiton. "The boy looks like a girl" or "The trap" is a cliche in Japan, And "Not both a male nor a female super-human" is also a cliche, which provides that this character is beyond human, nothing more nothing less. But as time goes by, the director uses its legacy to update their lore and story. It maybe rough, But "Okay" And "Fine" And "Understandable", If you are into Guilty Gear`s lore. Bring me on, Otakus, I maybe a poor fighting-game player but I know this game`s lore well than you!
i can at least appreciate the nuance and how their stories reflect a theme of discovering yourself and stepping out of a confined thinking, with bridget learning that despite her previous aspirations she truly was a girl at heart and her upbringing doesn't define that and testament deciding that gender is a fuck and so they're jsut gonna be whatever the fuck they want no matter what because they're now free
imagine hearing bridget's character song, The Town Inside Me, and NOT hear the trans experience in it. WHAT CHANGE DID YOU FUCKS THINK SHE WAS SO SCARED OF!?
Speaking as a cis guy who got help from a trans friend in understanding the experience better, LGBTQ+ subtext is pretty tough for us sometimes lol. Though I haven’t listened to the song so this case might be a no-subtlety one. But some song lyrics are also hard to interpret so maybe not? Eh point is I think the direct experience makes it a lot easier to pick up on. Not that I’m defending those who deny Bridget’s identity btw. I just wanted to rant about how I’m bad with subtext
@@emblemblade9245 That's why so many cis people say it's horrible rep, while trans people say it's good rep. They think it's bad rep because "she was forced to be a girl" while leaving out the part that it never bothered her, only that her parents feeling bad about forcing her to grow up as a girl which made her feel bad in turn. That's why cis people say the "b-but Bridget said she wanted to become manlier" (which, btw, they wouldn't want themselves), only to not realize this is incredibly common for trans people (Especially for older generations of trans women, look up trans peoples stories about "proving their manliness" through joining the military or becoming a gym bro) to try to fit into the societal expectations of what being a man is before later transitioning. I could keep going but I gotta go take my hormones myself but this is why I hate it when cis people try to explain to trans people why trans rep is bad when it's actually surprisingly good and for once not openly treating us existing as a joke
Bridget is one of my only reasons as to why I wanted to play Guilty Gear, I absolutely adored their story arc in game and I'm saddened every time I watch a silly little video with Bridget in it only to see some incels just saying some derogatory and degenerate things about her. Istg I watched a mashup of The Town Inside Me and Mombo No. 5 and the creator of the video had to make a public announcement regarding the people in the comments making transphobic remarks
this really applies to everything, all kinds of media like. have you SEEN the chaos that is the modern homestuck fandom fighting over if it's JOHN egbert or JUNE egbert... (sigh)
As a trans girl seeing representation of people like me makes me feel like there are actually people who respect my identity when even I struggle to do so.
@@definitely_a_girlDamn, ugly cis women? Erased /lh Seriously though, there's no beauty threshold for womanhood. Ugly women exist, being ugly is fine. Your physical appearance is a morally neutral trait.
There's a 4 panel manga called Otome Danshi ni Koisuru Otome that I really liked. I followed it for most of its run, and it was very good, the writer had a very strong understanding and respect for many queer concepts (specifically the distinction between identity, sexualty and expression). Unfortunately, the primary scanlator early on introduced a lot of transphobic language that was not present in the original. So it became really difficult to recommend to people who couldn't read it raw, even though I think it's an outstanding portrayal of trans concepts in Japanese media.
Preface: Bridget is a woman, clearly. My perspective on Bridget as a long time GG lore fan was that the transition felt very sudden because of how Strive handles characters who skipped Xrd. Xrd skippers still had character arcs, even if not shown on screen, so we never saw Bridget's journey that she apparently had. I really like her character but I do feel the way her story was handled caused a large bit of whiplash, and reasonably so to go from her arcade ending in XX to Strive. I'll admit at first I felt like it was a regression of her character without the proper context, which was mostly left out of Strive itself sans a couple obscure bits of arcade mode dialogue. My biggest problem is with the writing skipping things, and not Bridget herself. She is a bean.
As a forced-in token trans character myself, I would appreciate existing peacefully 😭 Thank you for introducing me to the queen of all trans women characters
She was pretty universally trans in the OG in the Japanese and English version. Some of the other localization had her be EXPLICITLY TRANS, while others removed it completely
The only people who said "Vivian isn't trans" were the same weird weebs that say Bridget wasn't and still isn't trans because it's some kind of "mistranslated" or some other bullshit
No but could you imagine if they actually made the M&M Trans, and knowingly made her an M&M with a Nut? The sheer c o n t r a s t of opinions Twitter would've had would've been insane, even more then normal.
16:02 Dont get me started on that Bridget’s day out animations comments! That was the worst string of comments i have ever read, and it was over the trans flag colors being on Bridget’s jojo strings!
I had to stop the video when one of the 🤓’s said “Tranth people don’t exthitht in Japan *eughhh*” when I know there are multiple yakuza substories revolving around trans women (with albeit shaky representation sometimes), along with the rumour of one of the yakuza VAs becoming a ally when he got the sloppiest of topples from a trans woman
and also japan does have queer people in their isolation era before the west kinda ruin that by forcing them to evolve the same as them and that's is in history obv these people on'y watch japan through anime and not beyond like history culture and other Japanese media
8:10 you where right about 31 Minutos influencing some of your personality, and as a chilean I feel really proud. Btw, that vid was my first introduction to you and it made me subscribe instantly!
Doubt you will read this comment (as there are thousands of them) but I think what you say at 7:10 is really important. I for example, look like a stereotypical black metal guy and (sadly) have a low male voice, which for a very long time prevented me from seeing myself as trans, since I dont sound anywhere close to a woman at all, but its nice seeing that other trans folk dont pay as much attention to that and I find it very inspiring, great video :3.
Parents - I don’t care what gender the baby is I’ll love them regardless 😊 Child - I’m not the gender I was assigned at birth, just fyi Parents - you’re no child of mine!! Gotta love that unconditional love 🙄
The funniest thing about the Bridget contraversy to me is that Guilty Gear being "woke" is nothing new. There's been a non-binary character in the series since it started in 1998 and everyone knew that as they were the character to be added to Strive _immediately before_ Bridget was, as well as having a gay character since 2000 (who is also my favouirte character in the series, unrelated). Like, if you're looking for a "non-woke" fighting game (it feels ridiculous to even say that with how stupid those people are) you've been in the wrong place from the start.
12:38 My whole view of Colress has been ruined, I use to see him as a suave scientist but now all I see is a Transphobic Anime Nerd who unironically says "um... actually" before arguing with someone over the gender of a fictional character thanks
i got recced this channel via your 31 minutos vid (that i still need to absorb into my eyeballs) but i saw this in your other vids and I REALLY REALLY LOVE THIS VIDEO AND YOUR CREATIVE ENERGY IN GENERAL, im immediately subscribed! but also in terms of really SHOCKINGLY good trans woman rep in adult animation, a very underrated and overlooked character i find is Evelyn from "Peepoodo and the Super Fuck Friends!" (it's. Very Very Horny and very very 18+ and Very French, but its super sex positive and headed by a Very LGBTQ+ ran studio, Bobbypills) She ends up transitioning in the middle of the first season and not only is it immediately framed as her becoming more confident and happy as herself, but it sticks for the rest of the show and she continues to participate in the Sexcapades and is drawn with just as much love and care as the other women in official art for the show. never questioned on or insulted for her gender (barring one unofficial translation that added a slur where theyre wasnt one in the official english And french subs) and its also just! nice that she keeps her deep voice. (fun fact, her french VA is balak, co-creator of the show as well as creator of LastMan, founder of Bobbypills and creator of. Other Things, and he really went out of his way to do right by her transition, which rules) Bobbypills tends to do cool work with their original properties and how they tackle gender and sexuality as WELL as having stellar animation in general, and i always go out of my way to shill them at every chance i get cuz they do great work and always have their hearts in the right place!
I freaking love Rachel, also it does look like she looks uncomfortable when Mr. Bighead calls a pre cracked egg his son. Also the only thing I know about Bridget is that her parents raised her as a girl cause it was bad luck to have same gender twins or something. I hope they retcon that, because having a trans woman be trans because her parents forced her into it sends the wrong message about trans people. Good for Bridget tho :D Edit: Fixed typos
Exactly why i hate it. >parents force me into being a girl >i learn to be more masculine >i am not any happier as a man >i guess my parents were right to force me to be a girl Even if that guy always envisioned Bridget as trans, that's a really tone deaf way to reveal it.
@@Sonchikas1 I always thought of Bridget being into crossdressing after leaving her parents. Coming to terms with what her parents did to her and becoming a young drag queen. But since Bridget is now trans, her backstory can be very harmful. I don't know if Guilty Gear's creator even understands this sadly.
They literally did it to save her? I know its scummy but thats the story and i am pretty sure its stated that she loves her parents very much and became a bounty hunter because they felt awful for doing that to bridget and she saw breaking the "curse" the only way to make her parents stop worrying After becaming a bounty hunter she proceeded to try to be more masculine but after 8 years she realizes she feels more comfortable as a girl
there's at least some nuance in it in that her parents hated doing it and she had gained the freedom to express her masculinity only to find she liked presenting as a girl anyway. hell, its part of WHY she was so scared of coming out and coming to terms with ehr gender identity, with ehr story mode having her accept herself despite her past and decide to convicne her parents they aren't to blame.
I think this video is super well constructed, I really liked it! I totally agree tho, they call us snowflakes when they get angry over literal chocolate, lmao
i wanna take a moment here to mention my favorite trans rep in any media ever which is arashi from ensemble stars, shes canonically trans and even thought some of her band mates are super transphobic at first, they end up coming around by the second game and accepting her afaik, theres even a scene where one character is confused about why they address her as a girl and another character explains that shes trans and you should treat her as she is, a girl
It's usually because if someone is transphobic, they will usually hold a lot of other bigotries as well. You very rarely see someone only holding a singular bigotry. It's usually multiple or none. A perfect example of this is the "Bridget was retconned" brigade, as they tend to be racist and islamophobic as well, and sometimes very homophobic, which is very strange
There is als Madleine from Celeste, she was confirmed to be trans by her creator and that caused an uproar in those pc master race capital g gamers that couldn't deal with reality of things.
Confession time. When I played Celeste, the presence of overcoming fear and accepting the parts of yourself you try to run away from really resonated with me as a person who had a lot of anxiety and depression at the time. I never noticed the trans subtext in there, and it came as quite a surprise to me to hear about that after finishing the game. And I got into a few arguments with people who seemed really insistent on everyone viewing Celeste as a trans allegory even though some of us just plain couldn’t see the subtext and had our own reasons for really caring about the experience of the story. I thought things were made to be far more open-ended in interpretation and didn’t like being told I had to only see things another person’s way. At least that’s how it felt, but maybe I just miscommunicated badly with those people. Regardless, the creator’s confirmation shut me the hell up and I’m happy to see Madeline as a trans rep nowadays while still resonating with Celeste in my own way.
i would be really interested to hear your perspective on Denise from Twin Peaks - one of my favourite trans woman representations in TV (and from the early 90’s too!!)
Brisket is my wife. I love Basket. I will protect Blanket with my life (not that she needs it, because she could probably kick my ass while she paints her nails). I love Briquette. (Also, it's so funny (and dumb) that people are STILL saying she's not trans, even after the Japanese game director LITERALLY confirmed it, in plain terms. Trans people exist, in Japan, there's just a higher stigma around it, in terms of politics, iirc)

I've played a decent amount of VRChat, due to that I've met quite a few more trans people than the average person. I've even been with people in their first times playing in VR and seeing their reactions to being able to choose an avatar that more closely represents how they see themselves is an incredible experience.
Homophobia and transphobia is the absolute worst. It’s such a braindead brainrot egotist narcissistic argument made by losers who can’t change for anything. 3:53 this part is sweet because I started playing toadette, and birdo in double dash recently, I was never good at the game as I just wanted to play it for fun, and I noticed I enjoyed playing as these two much more than the big boys, DK, Bowser, Petey, King Boo, Wario and Waluigi, etc. and eventually realized it’s okay to play as any characters you want, I feel there’s been a really toxic culture of ‘play as the BIG boys, the HEAVY characters, not ANYONE ELSE’ which I now realize is complete BS. playing as any character you want in a game shouldn’t be some sort of sign of toxic egos, it should be fun.

This Is gonna sound dumb but when i was a kid I was used to watch MLP videos on the internet so it desensitized me to hearing “masculine” voices from women or girls, so i don’t even notice it until a transphobe or just person who doesn’t understand women comments on it.
first of all and most importantly Guilty Gear is fire and you should play it secondly I can kind of see where people are coming from when they say they want more representation of feminine male characters in media. but even then when it came to the whole bridget debacle all I felt was a resounding "who cares?". Her being trans doesn't change anything that I, and I think most other people, liked about her character. Still plays the same, still has the same fun personality and gimmick (I still have no idea what crack Daisuke was on to give a magic yoyo to a child in a nun outfit but I need to find his dealer), she just has different pronouns now. All it does is add another avenue to her character to explore. as a guy who does want to present more femininely and even crossdresses at times I feel like characters like Bridget and Najimi have helped me with exploring that (as well as obviously some great friends), even though I've come to the conclusion that I do still see myself as a guy. Do I still think that it would be nice to see some characters who are more feminine but still male? sure. does that mean people need to be whining over bridget? no, she's awesome

One of my favorite (probably not intentional) trans girls is Plum Puddin’ from the 80s strawberry shortcake. She was originally a he and was primarily pared with another character whose name was TN Honey, both of them being the smart characters, TN leaning more toward inventing and Plum being book smart. I can't believe people tried to say Daisuke was mistranslated, when he speaks perfect English. He sings his own songs ffs.
they initially said it was a mistranslation because of the con moment of him signing the "trans rights" poster of bridget from like 10+ years ago. he didnt speak english then and the PR had to step forward and exclaim that because he couldnt read english, he didnt understand what trans rights meant and was (at the time) not a representation of his political beliefs.

Excellent points all!
But "Daisuke Dishwater" is a hilariously unfortunate auto-correct lol
Gender queer people would never write gender queet and/or trans characters. Everyone knows you're supposed to just be completely erased from the equation if your anything bit cishet and preferably male and/or white because clearly (white) cishet men are the only ones capable of actually taking their intent and explaining it correctly with the proper terms the -superior- cishet men can understand; so they can tell us that trans people arent ever real when a someone who is GNC writes as exclipt a trans character they can manage to despite strict and bigoted standards required by their boss.

Reading Daisuke's interview about Bridget's identity was very nice.
Pickles is the leading woman and she's completely bald (and tbh I don't remember them making many jokes about that, either.)

come to think of it, is yoshi and birdo even from the same species or seperate dinos?
Maybe it's like a Seahorse thing?
asking the real questions
Female yoshis seem to be nonexistent.
Not exactly the same but reminds me of that one monogendered race from Mass Effect. They're all fine with being perceived female and use feminine pronouns, but there's no "males" and they reproduce asexually (I think?)
Either way, I find that kinda thing fun in fiction.
They're treated more like an unrealistic genre and concept. love the video!
It's not easy, but what matters is you're trying. It's okay to fail and try again
but i wanna sound like a cute girl ;-;

So...its bad for bridget to be 'forced' into being 'trans'....but being 'forced' to dress like a girl in the first place is jsut 'femboy rep'?
I'm seeing some double standards here....
aren't both of those equally bad???
You mean there’s a buff trans lady who could pick me up in this game? Why did no one tell me sooner

I respect it.

imagine hearing bridget's character song, The Town Inside Me, and NOT hear the trans experience in it.
WHAT CHANGE DID YOU FUCKS THINK SHE WAS SO SCARED OF!?
[dryly] Changing socks obviously /joke
5 and the creator of the video had to make a public announcement regarding the people in the comments making transphobic remarks
this really applies to everything, all kinds of media

I love Bridget! Bridget is so cool! Anyways Bridget’s entire story arc is about self actualization and accepting who she is. We stan brisket!
Bridget? I only know of Brisket, biscuit, buildit, and baller
Damn the production on this video is crazy, great job!
As a forced-in token trans character myself, I would appreciate existing peacefully 😭
Thank you for introducing me to the queen of all trans women characters

I have come from the future to say that Vivian is trans in the English remake.
I come from the past to say that she was trans since the original game

One Google search has led me to find that that literally means crossdresser. Yay for vocabulary!
…and?
She was pretty universally trans in the OG in the Japanese and English version. Some of the other localization had her be EXPLICITLY TRANS, while others removed it completely
The only people who said "Vivian isn't trans" were the same weird weebs that say Bridget wasn't and still isn't trans because it's some kind of "mistranslated" or some other bullshit

My whole view of Colress has been ruined, I use to see him as a suave scientist but now all I see is a Transphobic Anime Nerd who unironically says "um... actually" before arguing with someone over the gender of a fictional character

but also in terms of really SHOCKINGLY good trans woman rep in adult animation, a very underrated and overlooked character i find is Evelyn from "Peepoodo and the Super Fuck Friends!"
(it's. Very Very Horny and very very 18+ and Very French, but its super sex positive and headed by a Very LGBTQ+ ran studio, Bobbypills)
She ends up transitioning in the middle of the first season and not only is it immediately framed as her becoming more confident and happy as herself, but it sticks for the rest of the show and she continues to participate in the Sexcapades and is drawn with just as much love and care as the other women in official art for the show. never questioned on or insulted for her gender (barring one unofficial translation that added a slur where theyre wasnt one in the official english And french subs) and its also just! nice that she keeps her deep voice.
(fun fact, her french VA is balak, co-creator of the show as well as creator of LastMan, founder of Bobbypills and creator of. Other Things, and he really went out of his way to do right by her transition, which rules)
Bobbypills tends to do cool work with their original properties and how they tackle gender and sexuality as WELL as having stellar animation in general, and i always go out of my way to shill them at every chance i get cuz they do great work and always have their hearts in the right place!
I just learned that we've been deadnaming Birdetta all these years.

Love the puppet so much! So well made, as are your scripts and editing.
Good for Bridget tho :D
Edit: Fixed typos
Exactly why i hate it.
>parents force me into being a girl
>i learn to be more masculine
>i am not any happier as a man
>i guess my parents were right to force me to be a girl
Even if that guy always envisioned Bridget as trans, that's a really tone deaf way to reveal it.
I know its scummy but thats the story and i am pretty sure its stated that she loves her parents very much and became a bounty hunter because they felt awful for doing that to bridget and she saw breaking the "curse" the only way to make her parents stop worrying
After becaming a bounty hunter she proceeded to try to be more masculine but after 8 years she realizes she feels more comfortable as a girl
there's at least some nuance in it in that her parents hated doing it and she had gained the freedom to express her masculinity only to find she liked presenting as a girl anyway. hell, its part of WHY she was so scared of coming out and coming to terms with ehr gender identity, with ehr story mode having her accept herself despite her past and decide to convicne her parents they aren't to blame.
Idk why but the term "the racism community" is the funniest thing I've heard in awhile

@@sarafontanini7051 na you’re right but yknow what the funniest part is?

Homophobia and transphobia is the absolute worst. It’s such a braindead brainrot egotist narcissistic argument made by losers who can’t change for anything. 3:53 this part is sweet because I started playing toadette, and birdo in double dash recently, I was never good at the game as I just wanted to play it for fun, and I noticed I enjoyed playing as these two much more than the big boys, DK, Bowser, Petey, King Boo, Wario and Waluigi, etc. and eventually realized it’s okay to play as any characters you want, I feel there’s been a really toxic culture of ‘play as the BIG boys, the HEAVY characters, not ANYONE ELSE’ which I now realize is complete BS. playing as any character you want in a game shouldn’t be some sort of sign of toxic egos, it should be fun.

secondly I can kind of see where people are coming from when they say they want more representation of feminine male characters in media. but even then when it came to the whole bridget debacle all I felt was a resounding "who cares?".
