    Hi Jason, great video learnt a lot from this. I have a question. I have fixed several iPhone 6S tristar ICs. Most every time they charge fine after the repair but all the time they drain fast like 1% every minute. The weird thing is that they only drain like that when using the phone but on stand by they don’t drain. I use 320c with airflow at 55 when desoldering the ic when soldering back on the new ic I use less air flow at 45 but same temp. I am using a quick 861DW solder station. Any input of what I might be doing wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    This was a great video. Even thou its not the kind of video you are shooting for, It great to see you solve the problem. The steps to figuring it out are always cool to see.
    I say even if its not a board related issue, you should post videos on you troubleshooting anyway. I mean it is important and im sure it will help a lot of people in the long run.
    Plus you filmed it, so you might as well.
    Anyway I appreciate it. Im trying to figure out why my moms Iphone 6 wont charge, and you've shown me some great tips and tests I can do that I didnt even know about. So thank you.
    Hope your staying safe out there.

    Fantastic! You answer my questions before i ask. The pins on the multimeter. Brilliant.
    I would like to know how you reset that shorted battery. Then i have one question about
    the iPhone 6. i have one that oddly connects to apple and fully restores (2.8 gigs) just by pressing and holding the home button ONLY. Other than it just sits here, shows a boot screen for 7.6 secs and a black screen 3.2 secs. Thanks for your videos, man. I would not have tried a fix without them.

    I'm somewhat new to repair and am currently preparing to troubleshoot an iPhone 6 with a possible bad charging port as well.
    This will be my first time using a multimeter (which I've ordered and is on its way) to be sure its a bad port before I go ahead and order any parts.
    In this phone's case, it will not charge at all. I was told the owner kept having to fiddle with the cable in all sorts of ways to get it to work ever so slightly until it just refused to work altogether (I've tried different cables, so that rules that out)
    What kind of reading can I expect from the board if the phone is connected and there is absolutely no power flowing through the charging port? The minimum for the battery? Nothing at all?
    What if I test the battery? What kind of reading should I expect there if its healthy or if its bad?
    If it turns out to be a board issue, I won't carry through with the repair as I'm not yet that experienced and I lack the proper equipment for it. But a bad battery and/or charging port I can do just fine. I'm good with switching out parts, but this will be my first time reading voltages to diagnose bad parts.

    I've got a 6 plus that when using an USB Current Monitor is not showing any amps being pulled. Does this mean it's the charging port? I believe it may be, but I was readying and saw that it may be a chip on the board that is the issue. How can you tell the difference if its the chip or just the charging port?

    Did you explain the boot loop??? If theres a fully powered battery why would there be a boot loop. wouldntit be the best test before you connect a new charging dock. If I am wrong here could you explain. Is it the case that the charging dock is just to charge the battery. It seeems logical to use a battery thats full 1st. but your was on 3% and dropping power. your answer could get me on my way to a fix. I wait in anticipation for your response. thumbs up.

    Hey, i have a question. I took my 5s apart because the phone wont charge or turn on and only showed the battery level on the screen. I opened up the phone and took out the battery and read the battery voltage. It read 2.5 volts. I then connected the battery to a lipo charger and charged it to 3.9 volts. I put it back into the phone and its still doing the same thing. Im thinking its the battery. What are your thoughts?

However it does not display any battery icon when off and charging. So it would appear it isnt charging right? Any ideas? Many thanks

    i have an issue where iphone 6 shows it charging then boots to apple logo then goes back to charging symbol and does this over and over , things ive tried to rule out replaced battery and charging port used new original apple cable but cannot restore it as it cant connect to a laptop tried all the old tricks of holding power and home button tricks and even holding just home button then connect to laptop once itunes has loaded none of it works, and finally tried the power and volume up button still no joy is it possible its the tri star that has gone as its had tri star repair last year and was warned by the repair person to get rid as soon as he carried out the repair

    i have the same issue as this on your video, so its more likely the dock connector thats causing the problem? i've replaced the battery and the percentage is increasing but when i leave it on, the percentage is going down while charging. i will purchase an extra dock connector and see what happens when i diagnose it with my multimeter.. if you have any tips it would be very handy so i can fix this iphone 6. thanks in advance.

      Troubleshooting iPhone 6/6+ charging issues has proven to be challenging. Sorry, I can't be much help - there's a very good chance that is the Tristar IC or the Tigris IC if battery and dock connector don't fix.

    I'm using 0.7 mm mechanical pencils with 0.68 mm pogo pins soldered into for multimeter probes and for poking while soldering. I really like the way that give me haptic feedback so maybe you'll want to give that a try, too.

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an awesome idea! I recently bought some new probes but this sounds neat. I've used graphite rods for conductors in quite a few projects but never thought of pencils for probes - I bet mechanical pencils make good probes, plus you can mark with them when needed. cool! Thanks :)

    • @quitteable
      @quitteable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I on the other hand didn't think of using the leads as conductors. I just measured and it might even work when the lead is short.
      Pogo pins are spring loaded needles used to interface test pads in automated testing. Really cheap,too. The springiness allows to compensate some shakiness and limits the force applied. Really neat for removing the rubbery overcoat or general poking. And they loosely fit mechanical pencils.

    Hi, just subbed to you channel, I've got a iPhone 6 that was plugged in to a car USB double socket,I was charging the phone off one &a a battery pack off the other, cut a long story short the battery pack let out a puff of smoke, and iphone stopped charging, ended up having to get a new lead for phone, it now charges normally up to 100%, but if left on standby it dies after about 7 hours... Any ideas what this could be...I have renewed the battery, but the issue remains..thanks in advance...martin

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Martin The Tristar IC is most likely at fault since you noticed this battery drain immediately after the smoking charger incident. Chargers pop those little ICs in one way or another all the time even without smoke. A very common symptom is battery drain. There are lot of other things it could be though.

    I have a tab 3, my shop couldn't find the cause of my tablet playing dead and not charging. Usb was ok. power ic ok. battery ok. I somehow managed it to boot it while I tried measuring the voltage? so, basically: very low percentage means: completely shut down, no charging, no booting/voltage error. long periods of charging: crashing, only hard reset works to boot. hope someone can help me?

    Hi there, I've got an iPhone 6 that does not power on. I opened the phone and noticed that the dock connector at the motherboard seems a bit damaged, though I can see all the pins straightened. I get no voltage at all at the battery connector on both the motherboard and the battery. Could this be an IC problem or a connector replacement? Thanks.

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is more likely an IC problem or a short to ground somewhere. From there I normally apply battery voltage from an external supply to the battery terminals and see what the amperage draw is. If it's above 0 amps with the phone off, something is draining the battery.

    • @benjaminhong687
      @benjaminhong687 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've went ahead and fed power to the battery connector and it powers up normally, could it just be the dock connector?

    Hi. I recently replaced the battery in my iPhone 6s and rather stupidly reconnected the battery connector BEFORE I reconnected the digitizer and other screen connectors. When I tried to turn the iPhone on after reassembly, nothing happened. The iPhone was dead. I left the phone on charge overnight, but it is still dead. I tried to see if the iPhone would show in iTunes, but it didn't. I am hoping that my stupidity just killed the battery, but am really concerned I might have shorted the mainboard. Any ideas thoughts on this or how to get the phone working again? Thanks

      Just to add to my previous post, I swapped the battery again today and
      the iPhone booted with everything working - except the Home Button &
      Touch ID. Happy as I am to have my iPhone 6s back, I am gutted the
      Home Button & Touch ID are not working. If anyone has any fix for
      this, please let me know! Thanks. K.

      Sorry I'm just reading all of this.. There are a lot of things that it could be. I would really be taking shots in the dark without seeing it though.. it would have to be something around the connector or maybe long screw damage I would think. Hopefully you figured out a solution by now!

    Can you show a video on how to tell if a iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus battery will "work 100 percent properly"..I have a issue that sometimes after i install the battery, the customer complains that the battery is defective. Either it will not rise in charge or it dies very quickly. Basically how can I predetermine, prior to selling the battery. If the battery is going to work properly. How can I troubleshoot a few things WAY before...so that when the battery is ready to go out the door. I can REST assured that it is 100 percent perfect! And not take a gamble, BASICALLY hopeing for the best. I want to be able to do some tests and look for certain reactions the battery does..when I introduce it to power!

    Oh yeah !!! Thumbs up for the soldered pins !!!! But, just in case you wonder - Fluke TP-88 will do it for you ! )))) it's lead tips extenders, they are kinda long though, I got them for 18$ ebay. Don't know if I will utilize them though, I might just solder sewing needles on my leads.

      plug it in to a computer, open device manager, i do this to see if the phone is being detected by the computer.....also..plug in the charger...feel the phone if its warm....warm means power is moving around inside...if its always cold and shows no signs of life...it may be the charger port..thats the cheapest 1st thing to replace...
