You might find this video useful - How to make a hat if by mistake you used waste yarn for cast on/off. The channel is Alina Hera Designs. I found it very easy to understand.
You know how many of the tutorials, for closing the end, have you picking one stitch, then choosing one up, then one down? Try just going linearly - the next one to the side, then the next one to the side of that. Don't alternate either side of the starter one.
This is a game changer, my back and shoulders got so sore from leaning over and trying to cast off. I also kept on dropping stitches. But since learning this, perfection every time. Thank you for your tutorials.
I can't recall which video it was, but one of the tutorials I've found for using my Sentro suggested using 2 different colors of scrap yarn. The first is used for five or ten rows, followed by one row of another contrasting color. If you make sure the loop at the halfway pin (24 on my 48 pin Sentro) is a bit loose with your second waste yarn, you can grab it and gently pull it out from between your first waste yarn and your project yarn. It's like unzipping it! You can immediately remove the first waste yarn and set it aside to unravel at your leisure. It means dealing with some extra yarn tails, but greatly simplified the waste yarn method for me :) I also found a tip for putting a small piece of scrap yarn on pin 48 and 24 (I usually do it on row 5, and 5 from the last row on my project yarn) to help with making sure you halve the tube neatly. It saves on having to count stitches, too, when doing a crochet finish!
Wow just learning that but of info is a game changer. I am Jane if all trades in art and crocheting and knitting is something I haven’t done since a teenager. But now U have 8 grandchildren and I needed a change from making them jewelry and paintings. So I purchased the sentro for my birthday last Friday, it is so much fun. But I’m a newbie so I love looking at tips tricks and all helpful advice on this machine. Thank you very much. (Excuse the chatter I only get to talk to adults on youtube😂)
wow! What an absolute game changer! Every project on my machine I’ve struggled to stitch it together at the ends neatly and Always wondered what people mean when they use waste yarn, well this was the best explanation of waste yarn ever! Thank you for sharing
I've had my machine for a week, your tutorials have bern invaluable. I did discover the need for waste yarn at start and finish by trial and error. Rather than use a needle to pick up, i run a 2.5mm circular needle through the cast off stitches under the waste yarn and knit a traditional cast off with a larger needle.
I was dubious...but the physical PAIN of casting off of this machine is why i've left it in the closet the last year and a half. Last night, I pulled it out, and tried to make a cat ear beanie. i'm proud of what happened, but it wasn't a cat ear beanie, haha, and THIS. THIS THIS THIS VITAL INFORMATION. My back thanks you, love. And I thank you, so so so much, for making these videos
My daughter received one of these machines for Christmas, we have already managed to make a hat and now I am excited to learn more techniques to teach her. Luckily I discovered your channel and your content has helped me a lot. Thank you very much and happy holidays! 😉
I understand waste yarn for looms because that first row is often times way too lose and hard to tighten. But I didn't understand it for a knitting machine. So glad you explained it. I just ordered a knitting machine but don't have it just yet. I really wanted to understand why I would use waste yarn. Thanks!

You've made it so easy to understand and now I absolutely get the appeal of using waste yarn. Thank you for taking the time to film and share this video. It has given me a new thing to try that I am very excited for, thank you! ❤
Wonderful explanation of why I need to use waste yarn. Thank you! Have an Addi that I haven't used yet, bought a skein of yarn to try to make a beanie tonight. So I'm going to have to get some more yarn for the waste part. Have used the manual hand looms and love the look, but my hands can no longer take the strain of making them that way, thus the Addi.
This was very helpful as it definitely showed me the need for waste yarn as I need to seam together the ends for some projects I’m working on. Can you also explain how to remove the scrap yarn at the end of the project as I’m having a difficult and time consuming time getting that part off. ***Update: I just came across a way to remove your waste yarn easily. You add one more row of waste yarn in a different color after your main waste yarn. When ready to remove, pull the loop {and all of that yarn) from the second color of that one row of waste yarn and the rest drops right off! Game changer. See “Remove waste yarn in less than 5 seconds” You Tube video.
Thank you for this video. I'm going to pin it on Pinterest! Santa might bring me a Sentro, so I have been studying up so I can get started right away. I thought waste yarn being mentioned in a few places meant it was not important.....well, this video has saved me time and frustration. Thank you!!!

Would waste yarn help reduce the curling that happens with a flat panel?
Absolutely!
I'm a super beginner and this is great! Thanks for your videos!
My pleasure! 🥰
Hi. I have watched your videos multiple times. I'm 70 years, I act younger 😊, but I have just started and of course my first project is beanie. I am still having a problem at the end. I can sew the top together, but the bottom, oh my gosh! I don't want to think I am too old to learn. Would you please help?
A little about myself, I'm married, have 3 grown children grandmother of 5 and I have 3 fur babies... And I live in Jackson, MS, USA
Thank you in advance
Thanks!
My pleasure! 🥰
Is there a way to do this when knitting a panel on the machine?
Absolutely! Check out my newest video 😊 th-cam.com/video/v40M3q2klTg/w-d-xo.html
How would you use waste yarn for something like a beanie where you wouldn't stitch the ends together on one side?
You would just go through each stitch with a crochet hook or needle to secure it. Or you could make a double layered beanie like this one 😊- th-cam.com/video/CP-CS2_KQc0/w-d-xo.html
My machine doesn't pick up yarn when adding yarn n after waste yarn, can anyone help?
Hi
I have a question when we have 48 sentro how can i knitt newborn baby capi ,can you help me because i want in Tube knitting 🧶
You will need to use the panel method or use a smaller machine 💖
I'm curious if waste yarn means the same thing as scrap yarn. In the U.S. I hear scrap yarn, but not the term waste yarn.
In my experience waste yarn is a term used specifically for the knitting machine. Scrap yarn can be used as waste yarn if that’s makes sense? 🤣
@@Katieree it does. Thanks. After watching several knitting machine videos (trying to decide if I want to buy one!) I figured out what waste yarn is all about.
Anyone's handle on the Sentro keep falling off?? It wont stay on 😢
