- The Curse cast members Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie, & Nizhonniya Luxi Austin and Executive Producer Dave McCary discuss the new series with FLC Programmer Dan Sullivan. Learn more: www.filmlinc.org/series/the-c...
In this brilliantly discomfiting collaboration between Nathan Fielder (hot on the heels of his revelatory comic creation The Rehearsal) and Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems, NYFF57; Oppenheimer), Fielder and Emma Stone (La La Land; The Favourite, NYFF56) play Asher and Whitney Siegel, married entrepreneurs (don’t call them gentrifiers!) whose latest plan is to flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española, New Mexico-all for a home improvement-style reality show being overseen by an ingratiating producer (Safdie) with demons of his own. From this premise, which nimbly touches upon inescapable American issues of race, class, and capital, Fielder and Safdie branch out into an increasingly tangled network of ethical and moral gray zones, expertly balancing the tender and the merciless. Following the world premiere of episodes 1-3 at the 61st New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center is pleased to present the remaining seven episodes from this genre-defying, riotously funny series, directed by Fielder and David and Nathan Zellner. An A24/Showtime release.

The interviewer needs to bring his word count down.
LMAO English teachers love him!
I was just thinking it and honestly I imagine it's because he's sitting like one foot away from Emma Stone, which... fair enough, lol
reminds me of miss south carolina that one year "like, such as..."
Love how the host manages to make that first relatively simple question into a convoluted multi paragraph confusing mess that he just leaves the actors with. It’s very artful in its own way. Not many people could do that bad of a job without intention!
Commented this after being astounded by the first question but I am here to confirm that it is every question! My guy talks like he is trying to fluff up the word count to his questions even going as far as repeating the same word over and over instead of pausing to actually use his brain and think about what he is saying. Once again I would like to applaud this level of commitment to failure. Incredible performance.
@@ThunderGuppies maybe he is coming down from a huge bender
My guess is he was trying to do the same to the actors, with a single question, what this series did to viewers in 10 episodes.
The finale was a masterpiece. Best ending I’ve seen in years.
Oh give me a break. I’m sick of people just acting like everything is so artsy and deep. It had absolutely zero logic made zero sense had nothing to do with the existing story and just made the entire show seem completely pointless.
It could be that they're not acting and really do appreciate it and see something there that you don't.
Yea, I haven't seen anything like it since the Dinosaurs finale back in '94
@@chucky5845You're the coolest.
@@commaJimI poop in my bed on purpose but NEVER pee. Am I cool?
“The slicing of the meat is me giving pieces of myself to people, whether I want to or not, and as a Native person that’s basically what you are doing every day. Whether people choose to eat it is totally up to them. And you ate it.”
And then Whitney just completely misses the point, doesn’t realize she was just called out, and says “That was beautiful.” That part was so great.
I actually hated that line. It was faux victimhood, which sadly is so pervasive today. In 2024, a Native American has the exact same rights as everyone else. No one is being oppressed or expecting anything more from a Native American or any other race. I would understand that quote if we were living in the 1830s though
Having the same "rights" does not mean that there is equality and justice, and certainly doesn't mean that others don't take from you and your culture to serve themselves.
@@Frederick0220not being able to practice your culture or visit your sacred places because they were stolen. Yeah, just self blaming victims here
@@Frederick0220Insane that you watched this show, saw all the ways Natives were disrespected, tokenized, and exploited, and still didn’t take that line in. I genuinely don’t understand how people can let their own political view stop them from experiencing genuine revelation or understanding of sensitive topics.
@@elijahjarrell8049 Can you give examples of how Native Americans were disrespected or exploited in the show? It's been several months since I watched it.

He's terrible.
He's trying WAY to hard to ask super deep questions

Maybe the worst interviewer ever
It’s so cool they’ve done these screenings and q&as each episode. Especially Benny has really been holding it down and engaging with the fans. This is one of those small but dedicated audience kind of shows and having these outlets for discussion has enhanced the entire experience a lot!
Omg i gotta watch all the episode interviews cuz this one alone was so delectable to watch.
I definitely feel what Emma said about Whitney and Cara's dialogue really starkly defining Whitney. Its like Cara just by being her honest self and having both a forthrightness AND a measured, distanced relationship with her shines a light so bright on her negative/superficial/artificial traits that they practically set on fire. I really hope to see more of Nizhonniya in the future, shes really amazing. The details about her improvising those important lines were wild, it felt like something that almost could have seeded the whole idea of the show, but instead was just her unscripted interpretation of her characters internality. Thats Actor-y AF.
I love how Nathan just gives these sarcastic non-answers and then Benny jumps in as personable as a person can be and gives these really sweet elaborate answers.
Love this show, can't wait to see the finale.
The last speech at the end of the season was the best acting I have seen from Nathan and I watch all his content. It was riveting to see him come alive.
Which character speach?
Brother that wasn't the finale
Go watch the finale!!!
he talkin bout penultimate
@@narrance I’m going it now!
Can't wait for their explanations of the Finale.
I know right?
Nathan shouting out Brigsby Bear makes me so happy. That movie is great and I love that Nathan appreciates Kyle's work.
I loved Brigsby Bear, Didn't even know that was him
It’s a tight knit circle 👃
I love that movie!
These are such fantastic panels. Benny is endlessly fascinating the way he talks about the characters and the show. I trust him implicitly with any story. I'm really going to miss Dougie for some reason once this show wraps up!! lol
lmao I completely get that. Dougie felt like a combination of a few people I have known who are toxic as friends but objectively fascinating and strangely endearing as people.
I was always captivated when Dougie on screen.
It feels like we've got chaotic neutral (Emma), chaotic evil (Nathan) and chaotic good (Benny) up there.
nizhonniya is lawful good
Honestly felt like Asher was the only one of the three that was slightly redeemable
I think his pain was easiest to see, and he was willing to change himself in ways that he thought would make himself good. Even if they wouldn't, that predicament is easy to empathize with, we want him to fulfill his emotional arc and he seems to want that as well. Safdies character actively wants to ignore what he should do while creating the appearance he would never do that, and Emmas character actively leans into her worst attributes and seems to feel no shame at all, so it's easy to want both of them to fail.@@odog8x16
i see a lot of comments alleging emma is "like whitney" and that just ... is the opposite of the truth. first of all, she has diagnosed anxiety disorder and panic disorder, hence the discomfort and what could be interpreted as hostility or tension you see that may look like whitney and her ever conflicting array of emotions but emma's isn't due to any kind of ill intent lying underneath a fake smile or whatever. it's rather a "fake it till you make it" as in "pretend things are fine even though i'm terrified." she's talked about being terrified of public speaking. the tension isn't hostility but rather, nerves. she's said and i quote that she's "a bundle of nerves" and "constantly overthinking" everything she says and doesn't say.
next, her "attitude" is being taken literally when in reality, she, like nathan, does a lot of bits, sarcasm, and dry humor in the natural way she communicates. to this tune, emma knows nathan and benny a lot better and is close friends with the two as opposed to not knowing nizhonniya as well, hence a presence of more anxiety when speaking to her that, like i said, seems to be read as hostility.
finally, her not wanting to be the one to speak *first* when prompted about oppressive systems that she doesn't experience and in turn obviously shouldn't be the one to lead the discourse about is GOOD !! that and as she later says, she had a lot of comments to make but wanted to take time to make sure things were articulated properly for such an important subject. that hesitation shows how much she cares. she's talked in the past about being apprehensive to speak on oppressive systems she isn't affected by in a spokesperson role like this for fear she would indeed be speaking over someone or unintentionally causing other harm. if you listen to nathan talk about how she and dave were the ones who wanted *cara's* explanation about the meat in the show, that is a direct testament to my point: that she wants to center the people who experience the oppression so that their voices can be heard.
this was such a refreshing comment to read, thank you
@@madi890 of course. it's unfortunate to see so many people misperceive her.
wow, couldn't have possibly explained this better. you're 100% right
Nathan is so gracious in all these interviews in making sure everyone has a chance to speak. He spotlights every person's contribution in such a meaningful away. He really seems like a genuinely kind person
24:27 Emma being extremely in control of her own movement while Nathan is flailing with his gestures is the funniest thing to me
“open heimer” “goodfellas” lol
This has been so beautiful to see, I’m grateful we get to be part of witnessing/having these conversations better.. as long as it may take
38:38 Both of their comedic intuition told them to give a thumbs up. Very wholesome.
good pick up, I didn't notice that
Emma really moderated this sesh. She was looking out for the audience. Love it.
Yea, she's really smart and I wish she was able to direct an episode with the fellas this season. Super self aware and not only gets the jokes, but knows how the reception of the jokes will go and the follow up questions that will come from it. I'm would love to see more footage of the three of them behind the scenes. She's got this strong energy to her, and she seems like the type to be aware of everybody's comfort levels at a party, and just sees things differently. My take.
Nathan seems to appreciate how Emma works through things, and I know he has a lot going on behind the scenes. Nathan works hard, and I think he always has. He's like Tim Heidecker in that he can't back track, so he's always going further than before when it comes to his performance as Nathan :) I can't imagine how stressed he had to be getting into character as Asher. Dark, dark shit.
Nathan Fielder's role as 'Nathan Fielder', and obviously Asher, have set him up as this celeb where it's so hard to imagine him with a girlfriend that the news of the two getting together would hit harder than usual. He 's a bit too smart for a lot of people, and they get frustrated trying to figure him out - it can lead to obsession (TH-cam has tons of hours+ videos of fan theories on Nathan etc etc.. strange) I'm glad he's able to establish that he's actually been acting the whole time, and that he's always been this good. I hope he doesn't end up in tons of Rom Coms somehow (unless he wants the money) because his performance was super rawdog/can't fake this. Top Tier TalentI love how Nathan Fielder's role as 'Nathan Fielder', obviously Asher, have set him up as a celeb where it's so hard to imagine him with a girlfriend that the news of the two getting together would hit harder than usual.
You see the stressors in him more than you do with Benny, but Benny is a god damn Ringmaster, and he is captivating by nature. Did you see him on Jimmy Kimmel? Insane. I love his anti humor roots, and I love how he pranked Tom Sharpling's show. If him and his brother end up parting for good professionally, then I think Nathan is a good Safdie net. I love Benny's tricky little mind and I will never be able to predict where his scripts go! He thinks in a way I don't, and I think a lot of that is where he grew up, and just that level of chaos/concurrency with shit going on all the time everywhere. And he just loves it so him and his brother have scenes where conversations cancel each other out, or there's mumbling. It's just real, and the way he writes/directs children feels real. Love it.
That first question was so unnecessarily long lmao
Best way to start an interview 🥴
i feel like a bigger issue than whether the characters are good or evil, is that they don't listen to eachother
I noticed that Cara always speaks honestly. The silence, sure but wish they had a bit more with her.
What a show. It's been a long time since anything on TV grabbed me like this. Incredible work.
Emma Stone is one of the most gifted and talented actors of her generation - I saw it all the way back in “Easy A,” and I’m so glad she’s seemingly really found her creative groove and is getting her due now.
I'm checking this channel every day for their episode 10 discussion. I gotta know what they have to say about it.
yeah it's crazy that it's not up yet
@@handlesyie I found a comment on the subreddit of someone who had recorded the entire audio of the Q&A and put it online. I'm sorry I don't remember the post it was under, but it had something to do with episode premiere photos. Hope you find it!
same here! i even subscribed to the channel just to keep checking for updates. all of the q&a’s have been excellent but i’m really excited to hear them talk about the finale. personally i thought it was the best finale of all time
@@mattvandam8861 The audio of the QnA is available on the subreddit!
It's not exactly deep. Goofy weirdness for basics.
What an amazing interview for an amazing piece of media. Loved the dynamics and intricate interpersonal relationships displayed by all the creators in this q & a. They Really dissected the core of this show in such a simple profound and unknowing way while also bringing forth a mirror to the madness. We have to stan.
It is very interesting seeing that even within the creative team on the show that you have these different visions and interpreations of the characters and show itself.
I think people get really obsessed with the auteur thing, and im as susceptible as anyone, but even in the most director-driven by-the-script productions theres so much work done by the actors to create what you are seeing. That said, this seems like a really great example of a collaborative project, or furthermore the best combination of both having an auteur vision and relying on a collaborative cast/set/crew to embolden that vision even further.
This show genuinely made me feel emotions i'm not sure I'd ever been aware of. Disconcerting and absolutely hilarious, truly made me think harder than anything i've seen in years. Also these panels are so insightful, what a breath of fresh air, so grateful this exists man, wow.
At 28:00 Benny really does give the heart of the show. It's strange to me that people didn't seem to catch it. It's a show with low stakes on paper, but high emotional stakes for the characters. And we resonate.
But my GOD... by the end Benny just needs to cool it. He's so good at chopping it up with people, but when you're with a panel of guests it doesn't play.
But that's the downside of filming and uploading these things I guess. Probably lots of added dynamics knowing tens of thousands of people are going to be watching this.
dude's the co creator and co star, he's allowed to talk.@@KevinMakins
@@ben-v- I'm aware of who he is. His co-panelists seem uncomfortable with it. Note that Cara's actor doesn't say a thing and the others struggle to get in airtime. Again, it's fine. He's super charming and smart. But in this context it plays wrong.
Benny is a god
@@KevinMakins his other panelists do not seem uncomfortable with it. they're all very clearly friends as well as collaborators. think you might need to work on your social cues, my man.
this nathan/benny/dave trio is too powerful. Emma is such a powerhouse. Get them all together doing a comedy project with Kyle and Beck and I'd be the happiest person in the world
This was great, thanks so much for posting! I also appreciate Dave McCary attempting to wrangle things and do a rapid fire round. Please tell me there is a similar Q&A for when episode 10 comes out, because I'm sure we'll have nothing but questions.
It's true, I am full of questions
I would also love to see more now
This was such a spectacular discussion. What a really insane show but to have the characters almost argue out from the actors about motivations is fantastic.
I knew that voice sounded familiar! David from Good Neighbor Stuff has always been an illusive legend to me 🙌
Dave is the voice and cameraman in Kyle's "Smoking" trilogy. A 420 friendly snoking masterclass in purpskurpology
Underrated reference, that’s a wild connection
Hand blown glass blown

bro minute 1 and im already nervous cause of this guy asking questions
like im gonna cry dude what that was so hard to watch it had to be written by nate
First time I've seen Nathan not be "in character"! Even in most interviews he's usually playing it up.
Everytime Nathan opens his mouth Im opening mine DYING LAUGHING
1:30 mins of intro from the host who thought he was part of the show. Stones ‘no comment’ is why she’s beloved.
the show is a masterpiece. congrats to everyone involved.
Emma and Nizhonnniya's interactions in this have a similar vibe to Whitney and Cara
Not saying Emma wasn't being genuine, nor do I expect her to be a great speaker on injustices/capitalism/racial themes presented in the show. I actually think Whitney was "genuinely" praising Cara in many moments of the show too. Regardless of intent or how morally sound Emma/Whitney are, the dynamic between a very successful white actor/producer and an up and coming indigenous actor/writer/artist is just sort of similar to their characters on the show, and was reflected on in this panel.
@@marcusmason8328 ohhh i see what you're saying. definitely misinterpreted on my part but i agree. i apologize.
I was thinking something similar in how, when Nizhonnniya struggled with the first question, Nathan started to speak for her. I just thought, woah, this is life imitating art right here lmao.
Benny got to see 2 nuclear bombs go off one in Oppenheimer and the other at the end of episode 9😂 and I just came from watching the finale holy shhhhhhhiiiiitttttttt I’ve never had so much anxiety watching a show we need a season 2
The finale was amazing!
Thank you for this upload, it was marvelous to watch, priceless. Mostly confirming my interpretations about the show. The Curse is a unique show, definitely not for everyone. And is refreshing that an actress that like so much, for many many years stands behind the ideas of this show, and not with the crap Hollywood is trying to brainwash people everyday.
The casting of Dean Cain in that specific role was so genius, because he literally is that guy in real life - a bizarre contradiction of both conservative and liberal, but not in a “centrist” way per se… he’s just this oddity in today’s sociopolitical landscape and you can’t really pin him or his positions down in any one “lane.” His casting for that role wasn’t any sort of mistake or happy accident; it absolutely had to be intentional.
Such an interesting and refreshing show!
damn I wish I was there and this interviewer needs to prepare his questions beforehand omg it was stressing me out but can’t blame him also he’s sitting next to emma stone
Great opportunity and very thankful for the Q/A. But for anyone in the situation in the future, the crowd should be queried for questions for all the panelists. Specifically here for Nizhonniya, and also Emma to an extent. Nathan and Benny are ready at any chance to talk talk talk and as tricksters also to derail. A moderator needs to know this and be ready for it. Dave had the right idea with a lightening round but that was only necessary because the moderator had already not commanded the space properly. A moderator should make everyone feel in their right place, such that they are not having to spill over their sides with responsibilities that shouldn't be theirs; when that happens, what each individual desires from the situation gets muddied by cross-talk and a confusion of places. Not throwing any shade here, just offering a reflection on how to respect the panelists and the crowd, so everyone is involved in the most optimum way and can shine for what they are. (For example, on the good/bad character question, that is a time for the moderator to jump in and direct it straight to Nizhonniya first; then the others would 'remember' that she hadn't spoken in over half an hour, and likely would gladly wait upon her words. I for one would have loved to hear her answer on that question; and been saved Benny's captious rejection of the binary, in any case.)
Finalie was CRAZY
Dudes first question was 2 minutes long
What the actual fuck
I like how even with a huge actor like Emma Stone on the panel 90% of the questions are very specifically directed at Nathan
That Romulan on stage was looking pretty fly
That was a chaotic Q&A
It's def fun to watch
Hope there’s one for the finale
Cara's shoes are so hot
She is just hot all around.
How in the hell did this guy get a job hosting a cast like this? He talks way too much, and cannot get a straight question out. Emma says, "I don't want to hijack this"at 12:40, but someone needed too. 😂😂😂
My man literally took an entire 1 minute and 40 seconds to ask the very first question. And then Emma Stone was just like…. Uhhhhhh I have absolutely no idea what to do with that word salad 😅
So awkward
Will the videos from episodes 1-4 ever go up? Please!
Hi. I'm just here for Nathan's talkshows stories. I hope he came prepared.
Love that they're doing these, but this moderator is pretty awful.
I felt his questions were solid, he just seemed to lack confidence and ask everything in a roundabout, almost apologetic way -- these types of things require the moderator to be more direct. Also he was too self-serious and seemed afraid to make a joke, even though there is plenty of dark humour laced into the show.
pls upload the q and a for ep 10
Where is episode 10 of the curse!?! Please post the full q&a!! I will pay one million dollars!!
It would feel very Nathan to never get the Episode 10 discussion

This moderator needs help asking concise questions.
I love Benny, but since his split from Josh, his eagerness to talk (and something about the way he's talking - the uncontrolled excitement and passion about every thought) have gone to the moon a little.
That being said, it's a fantastic show!
It’s weird seeing Nathan not act like a troll. Seems like a cool dude honestly.
Is there one of these interviews with the cast for the finale?
I don’t think so - I was looking for this as well, because I thought it was terrible and wanted them to explain themselves for wasting 10+ hours of my life lol
@@DragonsFrogsthey actually did do a Q&A for the finale and the twitter account for this channel said it would be uploaded at some point
The moderator is weirding me out with his vibe
talks way too much as if he's giving the answers
Tell me about it. Ended up skipping his questions tinged in word vomit.
He doesn't have good stage presence or control of the q&a lol it was odd
I thought his takes were p good on the show! He clearly studies film and reads a lot since he formulate his thoughts amazingly, but I agree, maybe his questions were posed a but confusingly since they weren't straight forward. Honestly, it felt as though his listeners were attempting to catch the previous train of thought before riding it out, and therefore when he arrived at the station (the question), they were lost already.
Simpler, punchier questions seem to create more discussion, much like shitty abstract art. Sometimes when something is so beautiful outright, it leaves less room for thought for the audience.
Episode 10 talk ?
Universe hear my prayer and cast Nathan as RIchard Mayhew in Neil Gaiman's 'Neverwhere'. He would be perfect for the role.
Emma Stone is incredible
29:46 Nathan is so effortlessly savage
Why is this cut?
Jesus Christ, it’s genuinely painful to watch the interviewer/moderator trying to ask them things, he does not seem prepared at all, it’s a shame since this is the only Q&A with all three main characters and producers
At 49:22 I wonder if things were starting to get a little awkward here so they had to cut this part
What about the Sikh thing? The Yogi Bhajan stuff? I'll keep watching and hope they comment on it. Somebody in this production really (understandably) hates him. To set the show in Espanola was such a conscious choice. amazing.
Benny said in an earlier Q&A (about that/some other things) that they were just trying to fill out the show’s universe with real world happenings from the area + that the area was mostly incidental based on tax breaks for filming and downtrodden town element
Fantastic show! The award nominations snub is a major injustice. Showtime better gives us at least a few more seasons.
Wait holy shit that’s Dave from Good Neighbor!?
omg guy did good neighbour
19:38 😂
None after the finale? 😢
The host is such a monologuist
Whitney is one of Emma Stone's most dynamic performances and... Nathan's there too.
the moderator is awful. he should have included the other people sitting on stage... and he should have taken more control.
“…the great Rick Rubin…”
47:05 a broadcaster in the UK got in trouble recently for referring to an audience member as “the black guy” during a Q&A.
I gave this video the 666th thumbs up, does that mean I'm now cursed?
The BAC thing isn't accurate. One drink will have the average person blow around a .06+ within the hour. Two drinks within an hour and people usually beyond the legal limit. In order to stay under the limit,it requires the average person to only have one drink per hour. There's obviously a lot of variables, but those limits are in place exactly because of the BAC averages that people will have when drinking. The idea is that the law really only wants people having 1 drink per hour if they're gonna drive.
