Sony WH-1000XM4 sounds best with LDAC

  • There is no question in the minds of many about the capability of the Sony WH-1000XM4. From the Mark 2 onwards, these headphones have been updated very gradually without major evolution. It’s because the design isn’t broken and the performance was great. So imagine my surprise when I tested the phones out and it failed my listening test. But, today, I’d like to do a very quick update video to follow up from my first unboxing video.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Wired is softer. There is less dynamic range. It’s also highly dependent on the player you are using. Because the sound processing is no longer done on the Sony. It will lean towards whatever sound signature your player is putting out. So it will differ for you. But on my FiiO m6, analog didn’t sound as good as an ldac connection. The m6 is after all a very budget player.

I tried both the 700s and the XM4s and I found the 700s to have better call quality and noise canceling than the XM4s, but my pair of 700s started exhibiting a static crackling noise whenever it swaps audio tracks after several hours so I’m leaning on staying with the XM4s since I have not experienced this static crackling noise with the XM4s.

    My xm 4 starts sending the noise in my ear through the mic when i do calling or anything which requires mic to be turned on... I can't use discord and play games because the audio quality goes terrible and i can hear outside noise from the mic which is supposed to send my voice to the other person. The science of it is correct. If it is lost, it is lost, it’s hard to get back exact same copy. DSEE has a bit of marketing in its concept. But the bit of science is about creating fill in data to extrapolate how it is supposed to sound in the first place. This took place 3 decades ago with Pioneer’s Legato Link.

      Aptx is found in Qualcomm chipsets (not all, having to check in the bluetooth specifications if the device has or not - it will appear more or less like A2DP / LE / Aptx which are protocols supported by the device) and LDAC is exclusive to Sony headphones. Hi Peter, another great video. LDAC “Lossy Digital to Analog Codec” is my guess considering it’s “near lossless quality, but not exact”. Yet another marketing term from Sony. I used to be a Sony enthusiast especially back in the day when they made Viao laptops and every TV I had in the past was always a Sony. One note, when I opened the XM4, I had to charge it fully before it would even power up. Something I did not expect. It makes me question the battery supplied in the unit I purchased from Best Buy. Did you try the Music Apps that was offered, with the “360” Audio? We share the same head structure, and did you find the air pressure slightly uncomfortable? I found the overall frequency response sounded congested. To the average consumer, one probably wouldn’t be bothered. For audiophiles, this wouldn’t be the choice for a daily headphone for listening to your favourite music. Personally I prefer the Aiaiai TMA - 2 Studio as the most comfortable over ear headphones with decent sound at a consumer level cost. I can wear them all day with no discomfort. Same with Sennheiser HD800s from 10 years back.

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I know what you are referring to. If you are on the audiophile track, there is a definite preference to open headphones. Noise Cancelling headphones will always give you that closed up feel which most audiophile find unnatural. I don't have a problem with the pressure but the 1000m4 aren't ones for 4 hour listening sessions.

    • @PeterPee

      You can't actually do much with it. But if you want to change the sound profile, you can set EQ through iOS.
      The other way you can improve is to have an external DAC connected... but that defeats the purpose of having it wireless because it is so cumbersome.

    • @PeterPee

      To be honest, they are mostly quite good and up there already. LDAC is a lot cleaner and there seems to be a bit more headroom so that the louder sounds are louder and you can also hear the softer sounds.
      But I will dare say that most people won't be able to discern the difference between LDAC and APTX-HD. SBC which is the base BT audio protocol is a mile away and that, the difference can be discerned easily. But between LDAC and APTX-HD, one would be hard-pressed to hear the difference.

    The iPhone has never supported AptX or AptX HD or any other of the Qualcomm owned codec's. The XM4 also switched from Qualcomm to Mediatek for it's internal chip. This has increased performance on many levels, like the ANC, but it did mean no more codec support for AptX, but given that Android has LDAC baked in now, it never really used AptX there anyways.

      Peter Pee This hasn't so much got to do with the ecosystem being closed off, but rather with licensing. Qualcomm and Apple had a long battle in courts over SOC patents for years and only recently settled so Apple can use their 5G tech, so maybe AptX support will come in the future sometime. LDAC is from Sony itself and used to be exclusive to their own Xperia devices, they gave it to Android for free since Android 8 or 9 a few years ago, but I don't know if they'd even offer it to Apple if given the chance.

      Take for example the b&w px. I like it for the dark sound so when it comes to tracks that are heavy on vocals and light on instrumentation, I use them as it helps me focus on the voice. The Beats can’t do that, but the Beats are great for bass heavy tracks and electronic music. For audiobooks and calls, I use the airpods for their transparency mode as they lend a great emphasis on the spoken word and it makes the speaker sound like they are there with you. The Sony’s wh-1000xm4 are great for comfort and thus suited for Long listening sessions. It really depends.
      Then the question is, if you just get one, which one? I Guess it depends on the use case. So you’re right, maybe I should do a video on this.

      I actually find it pretty good. When you do noise cancelling on the xm4, and because of the fact the the mic is used to pick up your voice, you do hear some of the surrounding bleed into your voice. For voice call, I find the AirPods Pro to be superior but for music, they suck. So for the superiority in music for the xm4, I do find that the voice call quality for xm4 to be good already. Also, call your friends and ask them how you sound.

    I returned them before even unboxing them when I found out that LDAC does not work while multipoint is active. So basically if I run them on an LDAC compatible phone, connect them to a laptop via multipoint to take calls during work hours, it automatically switches to SBC when I go back to the Phone. This is ridiculous. This makes it that I can either use multipoint or LDAC, but I can't use both technologies even though these two were the selling points for me. I watched 20 reviews or so before buying them and not one single reviewer mentioned this. The fact that on premium headphones no one is talking about the codecs is kind of dumb to me. That's one of the most important parts that make them high end.
    In regards to the above, you mentioned that you switch between the Fiio M6 and the phone. If this is the case without the Fiio then switching to SBC then I'm for sure buying one of those. @@PeterPee per Wikipedia. Sony skipped "latency" and "audio."

      I just did a bit of reading and it is not. Ldac is 990kbps and lhdc is 900kbps. Completely different.
      And on wiki for lhdc, it’s considered a competitor to ldac. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LHDC_(codec)

      @@PeterPee I take it back. I was focused on LHDC, not LDAC.

    I'm not 100% certain, but I think that LDAC stands for Lossless Digital Audio Codec. If you Google what LDAC is in Wikipedia, you can pretty much guess what it stands for.

      I thought so as well but it's still a guess. Even Sony doesn't say what it stands for!

    I could've sworn I left a comment about sources being the reason why you get clipping on the XM4 and others don't. Sad to see a reviewer delete a comment he doesn't agree with.

      Hmmm... could be some misunderstanding. I don’t think I have deleted a single comment since I started the channel.
