- Westeros has Ser Gregor Clegane, Jaime Lannister, Jon Snow, and a few other world-class swordsmen. My strong belief is that Oberyn Martell, while dead, among every other warrior, fighter and soldier in Westeros, was the deadliest warrior out there. He exemplified the best of Essosi “practical” fighting on Westerosi land.
Despite his death - the only time where he broke his stoic mindset - his upbringing and culture, his diverged path crafted a silent, deadly killer when needs be. I’m going to definitely make another video talking about his personality more than his fighting archetype, but there is a bit of history and character mentioned here, so give it a look! :)
Whether you agree or disagree to my opinion here, you can’t deny that the Trial against the Mountain, if Oberyn hadn’t been blinded by anger and hatred, was a victory for the Red Viper - in a heartbeat.

I feel like if Oberyn was serious from the start and didn't play around with Mountain (or got overemotional at the end), he could have easily and quickly won.
Personally, I think Oberyn knew that he could have ended the fight and killed The Mountain anytime he wanted and that made him too confident.
that's what makes it so bittersweet.. objectively speaking Oberyn had the advantage, but much like everything life that decision is complicated
Maybe he underestimated the Mountain's size and mistook the poison at the end of the spear for a similar effect at the same time as the average person. That's probably why he came close to Mountain thinking he had no power to resist I think.

It wasn't his overconfidence. It was his primal need and desire to hear the mountain confess his crimes that was his downfall.
Oberyn Martell is my favorite character.

Grey Worm's an insanely skilled soldier, but he's not at Oberyn's level
Oberyn was one of the top five fighters in asoiaf. Only people who had a chance to beat him in combat would be Jamie, Robert, Dayne, Daemon Blackfyre, and Barristan.

@@choide19 Robert vs oberyn would be a hard call. But I think that Robert in his prime would slightly edge over oberyn. He is incredibly strong like the great Jon or tormund. Yet still manages to be versatile, fast and has a lot of stamina. On horse back almost no one could of beaten him, his size and his skill with the warhammer made him one of the best jousters in his youth. I doubt that anyone could beat him in his prime. Though oberyn, dayne, barristan, Gregor, bronze John Royce and daario naahris would be some of the names that might have a chance.
Aemon Dragonknight Targaryen has a good chance. Especially with Dark Sister.
And Khal Drogo
And The Mountain.
He truly could have been the most dangerous player in the game. He was insanely balanced in terms of his qualities.
He had status as a prince, intelligence gained from the Citadel, the political savvy to plan long-term, the cunning and wit to match even Tywin and Varys in conversation, the charisma to capture anyone’s attention, the fighting ability to kill one of the most feared soldier in Westeros. And most importantly he wasn’t afraid to play dirty to get what he wants.
the key with oberyn was his versatility, speed and intelligence. u see this when he stabs the guy with dagger and says "a long sword is a bad option in close quarters". this is a guy who understands weapons and range. not only this but he also understands the human anatomy, weak spots and poisons. I imagine that oberyn is very accomplished with all type of weapons including swords. he choses weapons and styles to suite the situation. he actually beat the mountain rather easily (and he was going for poison slashes rather than stabs)... had he not been so focused on getting the confession and actually gone for the kill... I reckon he would of ended the mountain very easily with a stab or two with the spear. oberyn is without doubt 1 of if not the most dangerous fighters on either continent

Oberyn's understanding of politics and alliances strategies on war and timing is far more superior than anyone.
Thank you for making this video! I've always believed that Oberyn is the greatest warrior in GOT. He played with the Mountain the entire time. He could've easily killed him if he wanted to. I also think he can defeat the likes of Jaime, the Hound, Daario, and Khal Drogo. The reason being? Oberyn has had years of experience fighting warriors like them but they have never fought anyone who has the same vast experience and training as Oberyn.
Oberyn and daario have the same fighting style, though I agree that oberyn would probably win he just looks more agile and has more stamina. The one person who has his style and might beat him is Karl tanner, just because of his lack of honour and the fact he is great with a sword
If he had a dagger on him and went for it in those few seconds from being dropped to lifted to punched to gouged he could have got multiple stabs in the mountains face or neck while he was being killed, especially with his speed. It would make sense to me to have a dagger for arm distance combat if you only utilize a spear
In the books he and the mountain would also use shields, but against the mountain,who was clad from head to toe in armor, taking him by range and presicion with the spear would be better.
I think the best warrior of Westeros was Oberyn...then probably after him Jon. Oberyn had the perfect fighting skills. In reality, he did defeat the Mountain. I don't think whether any other warrior would stand a chance against him (exceptions: Jon & Khal Drogo). He was fast & swift in his moves..which literally make him a best warrior. His only mistake was that he diverted his attention towards Ellaria..instead of completely focussing on his fight. Otherwise, he did well!!! Miss Him!! Never seen a warrior like him!!

*xen* Another brilliant analysis and yes, in my opinion Oberyn Martel was beyond argument the best warrior in Westros he died of grief that's what killed him Oberyn's fighting styles reminds me of. Mohammad Ali, Roy Jones Jr, Parnell Whittaker, Sugar Ray Robinson, Anderson Silva, Bruce Lee and Scot Adkins speed, movement, accuracy and explosiveness.
He was one of the smartest fighters in game of thrones. Like you said he wasn’t a great knight with a sword like Ser Arthur.

@@Claytonbeastboy You're still neglecting the fact that he was suffering from an infect. In the books he doesn't even fight her, they've never met, and the infection is what puts him down and nearly kills him all by itself. The fight with Brienne was just to push the concept that she's on par with the Hound. The sad truth of it is D&D were incapable of writing strong female characters without source material so they just assassinated every male character in the show to prop them up. Sansa was trash from beginning to end but is made queen of the north? Arya kills the night king because D&D didn't want the fans to be right... that was literally their reason. Subverting expectations. Brienne becomes Lord Commander of the King's Guard for a King?
Apart from the fight with Brienne, which was actually decent despite the reasoning behind it, they did a spectacular job up to season 4. Certain strings weren't too bad from season 5 but the bulk of it was trash... from then on they'd already ruined it but did much, much, much, worse in season 8 proving it was possible to absolutely butcher the legacy of perhaps the greatest show ever made.
I wouldn't likely even say Brienne was better than Syrio or Jon necessarily... and the Mountain would be higher. He may have been big and generally dumb but as far as warrior senses go he was a natural. They didn't really go into it on the show but the trial by combat is just after dawn when the sun is still rising and he makes a point to keep his back to it as often as possible when fighting Oberyn. A veteran warrior's move. Oberyn was just way too fast and way too precise.

I would have honestly preferred a quick “Snatch boxing scene”-like ending to that fight. One strike and he kills the mountain and then the story goes elsewhere. Hell they could have had Tyrion thrown in prison liek he was anyway. They are royalty and can break rules perhaps. They are all assholes anyway. Then maybe Obyron the one that lets him out. Idk. Just would have been interesting to have the tension end that quick to mess with the audience/reader
