DIY Ultra Low Cost Axle Exhaust Dump For 2024+ Tacoma

  • One of my biggest dislikes about the 2024 Tacoma is the big, ugly, and bright shiny metal that catches your eye first, resonator and exhaust tip. Resonator and exhaust is to lower the sound frequency so it sounds like it has a larger engine at slow speed.
Not only is it highly visible, many people have crushed the exhaust tip when going over obstacles. It really does hang down!
So what happens when you remove them? Trail Hunter and TRD Pro don’t have them and use axle exhaust dumps. Same muffler, header pipe, sensors, and catalytic converter is used on all models so not having them won’t affect any warranties or emissions.
Rear axle exhaust dump is well behind the cab so you can’t pull exhaust gas in thru the fresh air vents or the open windows, even the back seat window.
Don’t think it’s a good idea to just remove the rear exhaust pipe. This could trap the exhaust gas letting it get into the cab, or heat up the gas tank and rear differential.
You can do this for almost nothing if you can cut metal. Instead of paying over 200 dollars for an axle exhaust dump, modify the tail pipe on the pickup and use it for. The only thing bought for this was a USD 1.50 stainless steel hose clamp.
You’ll need a 14 mm wrench and a way to cut metal. A right angle grinder and rotary cutoff tool will make it easier. Simple and fairly quick to do.
UPDATE: Muffler and pipe is made from stainless steel so no need for anti-corrosion paint.
Exhaust resonates at a low frequency around 2100 RPM when the engine is under load. Don't hear it when the engine is lightly loaded.

I'm going to do this. Can you really get the exhaust out without jacking up the truck? Any pointers/suggestions? Every other video I've seen they've had to jack it up. Thanks in advance.

What size of hose clamp did you use?

Going down the road, you only hear it when you really get on the throttle. It's no louder than with the resonator on it.

Is it normal to have that much watch that deep into the exhaust?

A cold exhaust usually has a lot of condensed water inside that evaporates as the exhaust heats up. Normally don’t see the steam it produces unless it’s cold outside.
