the keyboard was revolutionary at the time! NO other smartphone had that thought in their head, they all laughed at Apple for the non-keyboard thinking people were going to prefer a physical keyboard. I can understand their complaint, but apple blew them away.

It's kinda sad how the designer/engineer who made the touch keyboard everybody uses everyday on every mobile OS is referenced as "one guy"

I am a simple man. I see 799 likes, I press like.
It didn't actually use ai as we would call it today. The "ai" was most likely just a dictionary of english words sorted by popularity and the keyboard knew the probability of the next letter so it would change the size based on that. Still very impressive stuff.
Love them or hate them, Apple DID change the world.

I worked at an Apple Retail store and was there for the opening day launch on June 29th 2007. We got a thick packet of stapled print outs explaining how the iPhone worked about 2 days before it went on sale. The day it launched, we got to see the phone for the first time and hold it for the very first time, just one hour before it went on sale to the customers who lined up for a day. It was a crazy cool time to be a 19 year old kid. Great video!

I agree, I want to know all the details on how everything came together. I could watch an entire documentary on this, and not just the iPhone but Google's response and how they launched their first real competitor, a rivalry that still exists today and will continue to exist for the foreseeable future.
I've always been very interested in how they did the keyboard with the transparent hit region. That technique blew me away.

I hated that keyboard so bad
The trick with using that keyboard was to TRUST IT. I can remember trying to be so precise while using it that it drove me crazy... then I just said to myself- "just type". The AI worked really well, ESPECIALLY for a 1.0 product.
Apple has had some of the best hardware & software people we have seen in the last 20-30 years. They are geniuses at solving problems and making products work well.

I bet Tim Cook isn't going around saying: "Not good enough" or "You have 2 weeks or I'll have to give this to another department".
He's more concerned about political correctness and "cultural diversity" and not hurting peoples' feelings.
I'd say in a more general way that Cook is more concerned with Apple's appearance as a company than he is creating an excellent and reliable product. I feel as though Steve would have looked at the notch (for example) and said, "Either you have the top bezel or it disappears entirely. No notch." He probably would have seen some of the very public hardware and software issues that Apple has experienced in the past few years as the ultimate disgrace. Jobs was insistent on creating a product that made sense in all ways, and he damaged a lot of personal and business relationships in pursuit of that uncompromising goal. Tim Cook is just not Steve Jobs, and it reflects in the company's direction.
@@Browningate not a bad assessment. We could talk all day about what Jobs would have said. The unfortunate part is that no one really knows what he would have said. It's Tim Cook's company now-for better or for worse-and his priorities are far from what Steve's were.

As much as I perfer android and Samsung phones (have since day 1)..
There is no denying this was one of the groundbreaking products of the decade. By far. It single handedly created an entire market and product line that is worth billions now.
Everyone has their preference - but you have to give credit when its due.
So that is the effing reason iOS keyboard is so good to type on. Kudos to the developer who worked on it.

Man it's stories like this that get me buzzing as an iOS Developer about software and UI. This is the kind of stuff I wanna tell my kids 10, 20 years down the line. So inspiring.
Sure, Steve Jobs would have been difficult and demanding. But that’s what visionaries are for. It can be enormously frustrating to have brilliant visions and then have to rely on other technicians to make those visions a reality. If Jobs hadn’t been so tough, Apple products would never have been able to democratise creativity and productivity for the rest of us. The pressure to build that first iPhone would have been tremendous. Kudos to the teams who made that happen! Thank you, guys!
This is why I prefer when the full lead of the success relies with the guy who initially knew how to make it, instead of the guy who knows how to sell it, e.g. Google, FaceBook,... these companies are still under the control of the guys who created the original stuff while Steve Jobs is simply a salesman: All bark, no teeth. Apple was founded because one day a guy named Steve Wosniak, by himself, in his garage built the first personal computer ever. He was Steve Jobs' best friend. Wozniak was THE mega star when whe first Apple computer took the market by storm... Steve Jobs manage to overshadow him.
And then iphone 12 came out suck. Apple died with steve jobs
I am now a big fan of that KEYBOARD developer....he is so amazing and we take these features for granted now.....my respect for iPhone is even more...& I was a huge apple fan but now I am a huge fan of that developer too (fanboy of apple😛)

Unfortunately he wouldn’t, because he chose Tim Cook instead of this guy. Forstall could be Apple CEO today if Steve would have chose him. Still to this day I wonder why he didn’t. I regret he didn’t.
Because Tim was best for the companies financial future (they're now worth 1,000,000,000,000 (trillion)) and is a master of the supply chain, even if he isn't best for the Apple's design direction.
I still think that if they hold onto the headphone jack it would be better.
Apple's design decisions this time around is total trash, that also includes their "WONDERFUL" naming schemes btw. iPhone XS, XS MAX, and XR? really? Why would you need a 6.5" phone? That's closer to a tablet compared to a phone.
Even though Steve liked Forstall, he wasn't a populair person inside Apple. Steve knew that making Scott CEO would end in a lot of talented people leaving Apple.
I think he made the right choice. Scott would have tried to be the new Steve, even though Steve is irreplaceable.

@@yedijaluhur I'm pretty sure SwiftKey does this. Which means, it does NOT depend on the brand or model. That's the whole point of android.
I'm not so sure that that's true today. The iOS keyboard is pretty weak today, compared to the Gboard or even Swiftkey. Apple have lost their spark, and in many ways that spark was Steve Jobs and Scott Forstall.

I was living in China in 2005. I bought a Motorola phone that looked and functioned exectly like the iPhone. It was only made for the Asian market. Some apple engineer visiting in China bought one and brought it back to the USA for jobs to see. The rest is history.

I’m 39, I remember hearing about the buzz of the first iPhone in the news before it’s launch, but at the time I didn’t really understand just how big of a deal it was, or was destined to be. In the fall of 2007 I went to a concert festival in The Woodlands TX and it was there, standing in line for the restrooms that I first saw the iPhone in person. A young guy in front of me had it and was eager to show it off. I remember asking him “woah is that the iPhone?” And he was enthusiastic to talk about it. He let me hold it and scroll through his music library. I remember thinking that it made my flip phone seem like ancient technology by comparison. Now in 2022 it’s easy to take for granted the iPhone and all smartphones for that matter but in retrospect the iPhone really was a massive game changer. I’m typing this on an iPhone 12 mini and by the end of this month will be using a 14 Pro, my first foray into the Pro models of the iPhone. It’s absolutely incredible everything we can do with our phones today, cool to look back on how this technology came about!

I think there is nothing wrong with Tim Cook handling the business side. they do need someone like Jobs next to Tim , that pays attention to the products like he did.

Still, these C level people never mention the name of the individuals who invented these anecdote solutions for fear of taking the spotlight away from them.
Not mentioning names is all about respecting other people’s privacy. Not all people care for the limelight. The people that were interviewed here are already well known former Apple execs and managers.
And they're acting like they made the devices. You can give credit without giving private information.
It might be a legal thing. I know some major corporations have secrecy documents that keep you from giving out certain names or info to keep the industry secrets safe. The Coke formula is a perfect example.
chumleyok I think it simply because it was a team work. The head of the team is the one who got to speak on behalf of his team. He probably couldn't even remember who the guy was.
Also, don't get too crazy about getting credits.

I’m an Apple repair technician and recently I bought an iPhone 2G for $10 with a cracked screen and repaired it looks like new now for my collection have to love the very first iPhone that has us where we are today.
Compartmentalization, artificial intelligence, sensible UI, etc. They really put a lot of love into this thing.

IIRC, Jony Ive has been reported to have been uncomfortable with Scott’s temper and required a mediator when they’d have meetings. Tim wasn’t about the drama.
Apple maps is actually a google/apple dilemma when it came to privacy concerns. Google wasn't going to allow Apple to continue using maps as their stock maps app unless Apple was going to share information with google about their customers. Apple as they are with privacy said no, and then had to invest into other map companies such as TomTom, etc to recreate a stock Maps app for their users. Apple is also in the development of a newer, better maps app which will be trialled on iOS 12 in California later this year

Steve job create the idea of what a smartphone should do(out with the PDA and stylus) and feature that benefit day to day life. His idea is creating a device with its own purpose. The Apple and Iphone during his time was great. Its simplicity at it best.
I never liked Iphone much, I am and android guy but this process was amazing and we can all be thankfull to Apple for starting this smartphone era.
