    Great review Rob. Thanks for taking the time to do these. Being in the GTA as well, it near impossible for us to trade Whisky. There is just no secondary market available for us.
    I have an unopened bottle of the Mac 18 it's the 1994. I've been having trouble opening it, as I know it's value. I think I may just save it until Christmas and enjoy it. Again , thanks for the great reviews !!

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1994 is touted as one of the best. It's always difficult deciding when to open a high end bottle. Watch my video of CC 30 year old. I go into detail about opening sentimental bottles.

    I'm new to the world of scotch! I just picked up the Macallan 18 2016 release, would there be a difference if any, to the 1997 versus the 2016?

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's simply last years bottling. The 1997 was the last year that Macallan put the Year the whisky is barrelled and decided to switch to the date bottled.

    You have commented that you flip bottles, if I decided to flip how much would it go for ? And where do you go to flip ?

    Nice review and also good to note the older vintage was imported to the USA by Remy Cointreau and now it's by Edrington Americas.I have a 1993 Macallan 18 and a 12 from Remy, the newer ones are lighter in color.

    Have macallan stopped the age statement releases now, moving to the colour palette rubbish (ruby, gold, Amber etc)? I've not seen an age statement release here in BC.
    When the LCBO or BC Liquor discontinue something, grab the last bottle. I got one of the last 4 bottles of Arran 10 in BC.

    Nice bottle to have.
    Which one do you like the best of Macallan 18 or Glendronach 15?
    I know the Mac is 3 years older, but I've heard great stuff about the Glendronach 15.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because my bottle of Glendronach is a 2013 it's closer to 18 years old as Glendronach used older whisky for this expression. I'd have to say the Glendronach 15 is better.

    • @badkid73
      @badkid73 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 2015 bottling of Glendronach 15 Revival which is essentially 21 years old. However, the complex mouth feel of Macallan 18 is unique. There's nothing else like it. There's something to be said about those extremely small stills.

    I can buy 1996 and 1997 Macallan 18. In my country (Poland) its about 330 GBP each. But its 70cl and has wide purple opened in front hard box. In my country other version are not available. I don't know if that high price depends on that version? My research leads to Australia but I'm not sure. Do you know smth about this version and it's high price?? Thx

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly sure but the North American Macallans are 750 ml/75cl. The Macallan 18s tend to raise in price by 50gbp annually depending on Vintage. I’m sure if you bought a 2017 it would be much cheaper.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really good price for an 18 year old scotch. Not much is known about it but it's low risk with a potential high reward. It won a silver metal in the San Francisco spirit competition. Must be worth the price.

      Thanks Rob for responding asap!, great advice...if for a girf for a novice scotch friend so should be great for him. I'm going to pick up a couple other bottles tomorrow to hold on to unopened for a couple years...Macallan Fine Oak 17 Yr for $219 USD and can still get Macallan 18 yr for $199. And a couple Glengoyne 15 yr which are $80 here in FL which is what I will open up and drink till then! lol,

    Ah yes,finally a great review and video on a nice bottle of 18 year Macallan. You hit on some very good points,especially if a "neophyte Scotch drinker" delves right in on a high quality Scotch like the Macallan. The "appreciation" would not quite be there until more experience is gained on the pallet. Towards the end of the video you looked like you were "hallucinating" from the quality of the Macallan Scotch. Nonetheless it was entertaining and you have it an "A."(or was that an EH !!!) HA !!! Great video and I am now a subscriber. Rock and Roll !!!

  • @TheWhiskyHunter

    I'm a huge Mac fan, especially of the 18. I've been collecting and drinking it for a number of years so I have bottles going back when they were just over $100 starting with a 1978. All Scotch and Bourbon has dramatically gone up and I too am from the California Bay Area. You can get the Mac 18 here for $220 if you know where to go though stores now have it up to $275+. Mac is it's own profile and if you love the 18 no other Sherry profile is the Mac 18. Not Aberlour, Glendronach, Glenfarclas or any other. Though those I've mentioned are great too.
    Like I said I have many bottles of 18's and just because some internet source says the value is hundreds of dollars doesn't mean you can get that. A bottle is worth what someone is willing to pay. Selling overseas from the US is not a piece of cake and keep in mind it's illegal to privately sell and ship whisky/bourbon and it can be confiscated if discovered that is what you are shipping. Though I have a large collection I don't sell bottles but I know just because your bottle may be worth a lot more than you paid doesn't mean a buyer is sitting there waiting to give you your asking price.
    I enjoy your reviews though I found this one a bit to long and my interest started to wane.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish the age statement Mac was readily available here. Unfortunately it isn't. If you ever come to Toronto id love to take some off your hands if your willing to sell.

    Great review Rob, recently started watching your reviews, and its good to watch a review on a whiskey i may like to try and add to my collection, you seem to like the same sort of whiskys as i do. I also have Macallan 18 1996 which i got a few years back for about £80, haven't opened it or the 12 yr old sherry cask. I have opened the 25 yr old but that's for special occasion's i.e my birthday, I'm sure you will notice a big difference once you get one. I would recommend trying to get your hands a Glen Deveron 30 yr old, could be a bit difficult as the distillery is no longer with us, or a 15 yr old Mortlach bottled by Gordon and Macphail, just a few suggesting for you. thanks.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure why I'm just seeing this comment now. Thanks for the tips. The Mac 25 is so far out of my price range. I'll likely have to make it big in this industry just to try it. LCBO which is Ontario's government controlled liquor store doesn't have the greatest selection and tends to be at least 40% more expensive than the global market. Cheers, and thanks for watching.

    Hi Rob, I think you do a great job. Don't worry about the mistakes. Macallan 18 is a kind of classic. I have a bottle of the 95 and an unopened 94. The best place to get it is at auction. I picked up the 94 for £150. It's great whisky but not worth the going price. There are other great sherried whiskies for far less. WT

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn't agree more. Great stuff, just not the best in it's class and too much money for what you get. £150 is a great price. That's roughly what I paid with the exchange. About $280 CAD. You've already made a bunch of profit on the 94. Thanks for the kind words and for watching. Cheers.

  • @badkid73
    @badkid73 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are certain vintages of Macallan 18 that taste better than others. People will pay a premium for bottles that are no longer available, but the real premiums are paid for bottling years that are known to be outstanding. My 1995 bottle is not as good as my 1991 bottle. Even with the combining of large numbers of casks with the master distiller at work, there are variances in nose and taste. If I find a bottling that is exceptional, I buy as many as I can. People are crazy. I wouldn't pay more for a 10 year old whisky bottle if I know the current year's offering noses and tastes better.

    Great review Rob! I feel guilty about mentioning the Tobermory/Speyside thing now. You do amazingly well to produce these videos and nobody would expect them to be perfect. I'd rather you chatted off-script like you do and made mistakes than read out the facts.
    As for the Macallan, I'm the same as you because I wont be opening my bottle. In May 2014 I could have got the 1994 version from Amazon UK for £122. I got my 1995 version in July 2015 for £145. Now the latest version is £199. It's sad that the price has gone so crazy it's become impossible to open the bottles without feeling it's a waste as a long-term investment. But that's the modern world, and there's plenty of cheaper whisky out there that tastes great. It was interesting that you gave the Macallan an 8 when it's meant to be the Rolls Royce of whisky. You'd think it would be a 10 every time but it's not going to be to everyone's tip-top taste.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't given an A+ yet because there are too many 25 year old and older whiskies that I have yet to try. I still think Glengoyne 18 might be a touch better to be honest. Don't apologize, I'm more than happy to fix my errors. The Whisky Exchange has your 1995 bottle at £350 currently I believe. Well done that was a good catch. Thanks for watching David. I have a good felling about the Tomatin 18, we'll see how it stacks up to the Macallan.

    My Dude, that is "the" bottle to have. Not to be negative, but...The pre-1995 it was a little darker on the back of the paxerette (grape must) being pressed into the casks. This was outlawed and the current editions (or post 1995), people swear by the dark stuff, though I anticipate that any 18 will be stellar. Prices have really made drinking such a dram, well, out of reach for most. I lean on the 15,18,21 Glendronach for sherry perfection these days, though I am certain that prices will eventually sky rocket there as well. I would love to see a Dronach Macallan shoot out. Perhaps the 15 Revival vs Mac 18, would make a great video. The 18 Allardice is fantastic as well, thought I feel that the Revival may be closer to the Mac 18. Well, I would love to hear your thoughts on Glendronach as a sub for Macallan.

    • @WhiskyInThe6
      @WhiskyInThe6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glendronach is likely tied for my favourite distillery. The Revival unfortunately is not available in Ontario. I was however very close to buying the 15 Revival for half the price of the Mac 18 when my sister in law was in Florida. The head to head would be an awesome video. I'll see what I can do. Two very tough bottles to get hands on where I'm at, but I'll try my best. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it.

    Your right, Macallan is the most collectible. I won't buy it as it is way over priced. Especially the Fine Oak series of which I had the taste of 2 bottles of the 21 and was to light for me. There are better bottles for the price of the 18 yr also. I will go with Glendronach. I have the 12, 4 bottles of the 15, 18, 21 and the 1995 19 yr px cask 4028
    If they keep raising the prices of the older 18 yr bottles each year, they will have a stock supply as no one will buy them at that price. You only gave it an 8 out of 10. Good review.

    Macallan is WAY, WAY overpriced, mostly due to its huge marketing machine. I'd much rather drink the much cheaper and better Deanston 20 or Old Pultney 21!
