I bought the 1938 Speymalt at auction around 12 years ago for £1950 and thought I had massively overpaid for it but enjoyed it (I gave it 94 on Whiskybase). Those times have gone but great to see you guys over the pond getting some hidden gems to buy.

Never tried that 1938 but have been so close at auction in past years. Thanks for dropping a comment bud!!!

A few years ago, just on the brink of the whisky boom, you could pick up Speymalt Macallan for a decent buck. They ranged from young stuff to old and I got a bottle of 18 year old for £69 and you could still get the really old stuff for reasonable prices. Like the distillery offering it was bottled at 43% so it was perfect to compare to the distillery offering (1995) I had and the Glengoyne 21 also bottled at 43%. In terms of preference, for me, it was Macallan, Glengoyne and Speymalt in last place. It was good stuff but a bit rough compared to the excellent casks the distillery Macallan used back then. $300 is still a lot to pay for this considering the risk of cask despite the good strength and age. Macallan prices are absurd but that does not mean cheaper indi prices are good value either.
As for this bad boy, well it might as well be anything. It's a cask dominated sherry bomb and, therefore, it hardly matters whether it's Macallan or not. Put a cheaper, unfashionable, Speyside in that cask and the same result. We associate Macallan because Macallan are a sherry bomb. (The older bottlings are different but even then it had something to do with the casks.) Anyway, great review gentlemen and a good choice of review. All the best. WT

I would normally agree with you but with a few drops of water you get that distinct macallan orange chocolate and ginger candy thats so so macallan. Of course other sherry bombs have similar notes but it stands out a bit differently in macallan. For sure, always a big risk paying $300 for an indy but this one is much better than the current bottling of Mac 18, unlike what your talking about when the 1995 mac 18 was excellent.
Always appreciate hearing about your journey in whisky WT!!! Cheers!

I just picked up the 1973-2015 41 year G&M Speymalt Macallan at 43% ABV. It was the score of the decade at $219.99 which was obviously a typo on placing a decimal point in the wrong location but I'm not complaining. I haven't cracked her yet but I've had the G&M 40 year bottled in the 90's and while the distillery isn't disclosed, I can tell that it's an older Macallan with the flavor profile. An amazing mouthfeel even at 40% ABV with deep dark stewed fruits alongside chocolate dipped oranges and a beautiful dunnage aura comprised of wood furniture, in long-term storage in a cold, dark basement. Truly remarkable stuff and it's easy to see how Macallan built its reputation off of expressions such as these. But that was a different era.

Very impressive find and that bottle is excellent. Yah those older bottles at 40% isnt too far off cask strength since they are so old.

I always miss when these Mac G&M bottles come up for sale and I'm not paying secondary market prices. I know Macallan can make great juice today, but they don't show it in today's expressions. Mac 18 is $350 today, what a waste of money. To have a Mac 18-20 CS for $200-$300 is a great price. Great review.

Hard to know since I haven't tried the bottle you found, there are several bottlings and this one was for US market. But for 550 euro i would have to try it before i bought a bottle.
