Sidemount scuba diving was born in cave exploration and sidemount has broken out to mainstream diving and it definitely has its benefits but it also has its cons, so in this video, I cover some of the pros and cons of sidemount diving.

I switched to Sidemount after shoulder surgery. I cannot reach the valves behind me. I am happy I did. Personally I think Sidemount is the best way to go. The tanks are fully accessible and can be rigged fully independent or a manifold can be used to link the two like backmount doubles. I find the movement in the water to be much more free and natural. I am on the East coast of the USA so my diving is mainly cold water with a drysuit. The bolt snap of choice is the largest eye and the largest button on the gate. Practice in a pool or on a quarry training platform is good to get you used to the placement of everything. I have no plans to go back to backmount. From now on it Sidemount all the way.

Seems like it is the best set for solo diver. Most safe and one can avoid back problems dansing with double alone :)

Single tank and wing for recreational, backmount for deeper open water dive (>50m), as why wouldn't you, you have wasted space there if you don't. Sidemount for caves and some deeper wrecks as it makes so much more sense when you're inside things. Love both. However you mentioned dedicated system, ok thats cool, but I do have gear that will do both back mounted doubles, single back mount, and sidemount with a few tweaks. Although I do have a dedicated sidemount wing now but the top is bungeed not bolt snapped, keeps it nice and snug. Sidemount options are also really good for shorter people who find the doubles a little cumbersome too! If I had my way I would have gear for every season 😂. Great video, look forward to the next one!

During my cavern training i switched to sidemount, love it, love my katana 2 black, i love being such low profile now that im doing cave because i have more room to work with without damaging the beautiful caves, so people on doubles hit the ceilings and break chunks off (im in florida its crazy down here) most are good divers but sometimes i see divers who just concern me that cave dive xD
Sidemount is definitely the way to go, i work on regulators and visual/hydro cylinders so i know how everything works and all the parts, so if something happens i can identify which o-ring just sheared itself
Also i only use aluminum 80's because they are lighter in water, just have to move them down as you dive (which i like because its sort of a challenge constantly trying to keep both cylinders in perfect trim)
    Very fun to dive

It sounds like the reason you stick with Backmount over Sidemount is that you dive in colder waters and clipping D-Rings with gloves isn't so easy. Is that right or are there other reasons you primarily dive BM when diving multiple tanks? Looking to start the journey to multiple cylinders and not sure which system is better for me. Thanks.

There is this side instructor called Thomaz Michura from Sidemount Silesia who demonstrated up to 10 tanks in sidemount. Of course that was for demo purposes only, but I have seen people say that up to 6 tanks is doable, but 4 tanks is the norm. I personally think that if you are diving more than 4 tanks a lot, a rebreather might make your life easier and maybe safer.

Let's assume you have one tank.
Will it not work as a sidemount at all?
Even if you use your weights to balance properly?

If it's an aluminium cylinder that will work fine, though you lose some of the benefits of sidemount such as redundant gas supply and regulators. Plenty of people do single cylinder sidemount on recreational dives.
You shouldn't even need to offset weight to balance it out. Remember that alu cylinders go from negative to positive during the dive so using lead to compensate won't ever be perfect. Experienced sidemount divers just use their body tension to compensate and keep their weight centered on their spine.

In my resort divemaster days some 35 years ago, we would have an impromptu “side mount” dive once the customers were taken care of.
We just jumped in the water with a standard 80 under our arms.
We loved the freedom. Nice to see our idea of fun taken to a proper level. I am going to get back into diving very soon and it will be sidemount

I want to transition to sidemount, but buying a whole new kit is a tough sell past the wife.

Hollis SMS 75 is setup for single back mount or side mount. Maybe even both lol. I think its what I'm going with. So I can use my big boi (133cf steel) or side mount my Al 80s

Does recreational sidemount make any sense? Do people sidemount just one tank?

    • @Ben-ie1ht
      @Ben-ie1ht 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Sidemount with one tank doesn't work. Your weight is always on one side so you lean to your right or left.

Yeah, I've seen a couple divers sidemount a single tank before in open water, but as Ben says it throws your buoyancy off...

In my opinion, you can sidemount with one cylinder, just use weights on a bolt snap on the opposite side to offset the weight of your cylinder. As you consume the gas, you can move the weight in-ward. However, diving sidemount with a single tank also means that you don't have redundancy. 90% of my sidemount dives are recreational and although lp85's are my standard cylinder, I am also looking at a set of lp50 for shallow dives, especially if I'm with someone just using a standard AL80. Still have redundancy but just not hauling around as much breathing gas.

Sure, I know a number of rec divers who do that. With an aluminium tank it’s quite comfortable. You can compensate the imbalance with body tensioning (or with a block of lead on the opposite side of your body). I personally bring two tanks, even on rec dives, because I prefer the redundancy. On a two dive boat trip, I just keep the same two tanks for two dives, while the other divers switch to a new tanks between dives.

I've seen people do sidemount with 2x 7l instead of 1x12 backmount. That is practically the same amount of gas but with smaller tanks. That's an advantage when getting the tanks back onto the boat.

Talking about equipment without showing it is difficult for many to understand and it's boring. Show us the gear you are talking about.
