  • We leave beautiful Blenheim and make our way towards Kaikōura on a road trip down the east coast of the south island of New Zealand while enjoying some lovely treats and meals along the way! We also encountered some difficulties finding a camping ground within Kaikōura.

    Beautiful country. Beautiful views.
Yet tourists unhappy cause they can't crap in the bushes or anywhere else. For free.
And we know what you're doing in the sea first thing. Having a pee. Taking a dump. In our beautiful country.
I was lucky enough to do the south island, I'm a kiwi- under level two.
Auckland was locked down for 5 months. We toured the sth island.
Fully self contained in our caravan.
Wonderful. No damned tourists clogging the place up and crapping everywhere.

I honestly cannot believe all the waffly comments about pies. I was honestly beginning to wonder if anyone else was concerned about what people do when they are not self contained and there are no toilet facilities. The amount of times you see discarded toilet paper in bushes is very sad to see. In one reply there is a comment about using gym membership. What gyms chains do we in the smaller towns in NZ and especially the South Island where you can pop in and shower and use the facilities? I agree that in tourist areas it would be helpful to have more facilities with freedom camp sites but it is the locals who have to partly fund this through rates and whilst some comments have mentioned tourist towns raking it in - that doesn't apply to every resident in a tourist town and Kaikoura has gone through an incredibly tough time.

I always stop for the fresh fish and chips in Kaikoura... It really is staple in any South island road trip. And if you ever get fined for freedom camping in a non certified vehicle just say you were tired and had to pull over to rest, as per the Land Transport Act.

The main thing that really pisses me off about the small towns like Kaikōura is, they are a tourist town and desperately need the tourist dollars yet they refuse to provide adequate facilities for the tourists like camping sites with shared toilets and showers at a Backpacker price. They created the problem and refuse to solve it.
When l have travelled around Australia one can find public composting toilets along the road side, even in the desert.
They make freedom camping available to their tourists. NZ business communities are stupid not to follow Aussies example.

I like how all us kiwis watch your videos on New Zealand lol. Fish used to be $1.20 and a scoop of chips the same. Unfortunately food has sky-rocketed. F&C's used to be the affordable takeaway, but now triple the price it was. We have a holiday house in South bay in Kaikoura. Family goes up there all the time from Chch. It's a great spot 👌. Glen and Mado welcome to the South Island, prost/cheers, watching you over a nice cold beer. Your journey south, people do get friendlier. The east coast of the south is as flat as a pancake until you hit Oamaru, thereafter hilly - not mountains. Make you way through to Christchurch after Hanmer, (pretty as heck) Queenstown, (jaw dropper) to Dunedin, to Invercargill, then through the Haast Pass to the West Coast. to Milford Sound, (wet ya self material, beyond description) then travel back north. You can cross over back to the east coast at either Hokitika via Arthurs Pass or Greymouth via Lewis Pass to Christchurch, (both are through native forest, my preference is Arthurs, quicker and over the via duct, alternatively continue travelling north up to Karemea (awe inspiring) (I would truly suggest that) You want scenery, mountains, clear fresh water streams and rivers, all is waiting on the West Coast, trust me you'll love it. Native forests, brilliant views, scenery to die for. Be very careful on the roads Glen and don't cut corners, be careful of your speed; the West Coast has roads that follow the base of the mountains - you are literally travelling the base of the Southern Alps. Don't know what your schedule is, but I can guarantee the deep south and West Coast will take time. Towns on the W/Coast are far between, take plenty of water/ meals for at least 2 days, fill the tank before departing Milford, you'll make it easily up to Hoki, but better safe than sorry. You'll love it and probably use all your photo storage up. Be safe, happy travels. (Been there, done that, North and South, went back for more and loved every minute).

I've just looked up about Rig. It's called Lemon fish in the North Island. It's a small shark. It's a bottom feeder of crabs etc. It's a low oil, white flesh. Scientists don't know enough about its breeding and nursery habits in order to look after the species. It is net and bottom trawled. Don't know if it's from sandy bottom seas. -From the NIWA site.

What's sad is that the previous government, that just got voted out, passed new freedom camping laws that make it much more restrictive than ever before, and the fines for getting caught much more expensive than before. The main new requirement is that only campers with fully plumbed-in toilets can freedom camp in designated freedom zones now. Unfortunately, freedom camping is becoming something only the more well off can do without suffering the consequences.

Sad that it has to be political but the reasons for making it more regulated are pretty obvious lol. We don’t want faeces and urine where it shouldn’t be. Let’s be honest … if people want to travel .. they either do it the decent way or not travel. I would never travel somewhere if I hadn’t planned to be law abiding and respectful of the country I visit and it’s environment.

As much as l totally agree that Rigg is fantastic and it's always my first choice from the Chippy, you missed an important trick. Kai is Māori for food and kōura is crayfish so, no surprises, Kaikōura is famous for crayfish. On your way into the township, you probably drove past a blue painted caravan called Nin's Bin. They're a family run business who have been selling crayfish (and lobster) there for 50 years. Also, Kaikōura used to be a whaling town but, Aotearoa New Zealand had stopped whaling by 1969 and in 1987 local Māori started taking people out to watch them (there's an important feeding route near Kaikōura) so whales regularly pass nearby and whale watching is now a pretty big drawcord for Kaikōura - you can go out by boat or helicopter and l highly recommend it. 😊

Rig, also known as 'lemon fish' and spotted dogfish, are small sharks found in coastal waters all around New Zealand. They are used for fish and chips because they're fairly cheap, don't have any bones in the flesh, and taste great.

I stopped for only one night at Kaikoura, freedom camping at the far end of town right beside a hotel. The sign said freedom camping and I paid $5 for the night. It was per campervan. Then about 1 AM dueing the night I was woken up by my camper bounceing up and down.A very drunk man climbed on the front of the campervan and was bounceing it.I got out only in my underwear with torch and told him to "F" off.He told me he was a local and incharge of the area.So beware stopping at Kaikoura at the end of town.Has put me off ever going there again.

Hanmer Springs is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to, it’s honestly breathtaking you won’t regret it. I was born and raised in Christchurch and after spending 10 years in Australia I went back and visited Hanmer springs again, this time as an adult and I was absolutely blown away with it’s beauty, sitting in a hot tub over looking snow covered mountains I couldn’t believe this is my home where I grew up. Lucky is an understatement. Enjoy guys ❤
