This neo soul chord progression was inspired by the jazz standard 'Blue In Green'. It makes use of chord extensions to create big, thick textured chords. We look at how to use secondary dominants since they are very common in the neo soul / gospel genre.
I also show you some other tips and tricks that you can use to create your own neo soul chord progressions and start to understand how people such as Cory Henry and Robert Glasper sound like they do!

Who else just LOVES neo soul chords?? I think I need to make more videos like this :D
PianoPig i love these kinds of progression... Great one dude we want more of these for sure. Also please do a video on improvisation on these progressions. 😃
Yeah I really enjoyed making this video so I'm sure there will be more to come! Improvising over neo soul progressions - great suggestion :)
Damn! Dude where have u been all this while?? This is awesome ...love the neo soul videos ...keep em coming bro ...am so gonna subscribe to this channel!!
Good decision :) - There will be many more of this style video to come in the future!
We all love Neosoul, pls give us more, and be blessed.
it's always surprising when a chord sounds disgusting alone, but amazing in passing
Absolutely! This is the case with a lot of altered dominant chords, but they just sound SO good in context
Ryan Perrin if you find chords "disgusting" you must be very untalented lol
UnicornHorn This is such a toxic comment. Chords, actually can sound disgusting on their own, without context. The whole point is to resolve them... making music.
Maybe unicorn is tone deaf and can't perceive dissonance, that's really the only reason you wouldn't be able to hear a disgusting chord
UnicornHorn I can kinda see where you’re coming from but it’s not talent. I think when you hear enough chord patterns maybe specific to a genre, you start to automatically hear what chord will come next and thus it sounds less “disgusting”. I don’t know just my two cents
Boy do I love me some _T H I C C_ chords
Daaaamn girl, that [chord] looking T H I C C as heeeell
Michael Griffith ok nick Mira
I’ll show you thicc
This guy looks as stoned as the presidents of mount rushmore
LOL bruh this killed me hahaha i was thinking the same thing SMDH
dude i just kicked my turtle laughing at this shit
One of his eyeballs appears to be bigger than the others. It gives him an off-kilter appearance.
Tom van der wulp 😂🤣😂🤣😂😭😭
Vainglory 2KW8Ω 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
This chord progression is such a staple of neo soul I wish we had an agreed upon name for it
I’m getting blue in green vibes as well and giant step vibes from this good progression
Concise, fun, no "trying to be funny" or sounding nervous. Just the way I like my you tube's. Thanks
agree
Just wanted to say this was well put together as an educative video. You taught a section, reviewed over what we learned, and then taught the next step. Simplified the concept: CM-> Em. And provided examples. Thank you! :)
Thanks! Good to hear you enjoyed the video 😀
Hands down most concise and clear lesson I've seen thank you
It's my pleasure!
Love this! You're the first person to actually teach rather than confuse. Props and love to you!
blue and green is one of my favorites! Love your tutorials!
I can hear the jazz influence in that chord progression. Really nice
I'm in my 3rd month of learning to play keyboards. You're showing some fairly complex stuff, but I'm getting it. I'm either becoming a better student than I thought, or you're a great teacher...or maybe both. Thanks for the good video.
Good stuff man! Keep up the good work, if you can understand this video after only playing for 3 months you're doing really well :)
Thanks, finally someone who knows and takes the time to break it down. I've seen quite a few guys who seem to be just showing off, running those riffs, with no explanation. Thanks again.
More of these Simon!
This makes more sense when thinking of it as the key of G, but starting at the IV chord (subdominant). Then that B-dominant is just the dominant of the minor parallel and that 11# of the C is included in the scale. Later modulating to F (D-minor) through chromatic movement, then back to G!
I don't see the first chord being in "c-major" either. It's obvious that the general gist is "start from G, go down a tone, play a trick to come back".
i was thinking the EXACT same thing
I went full on nerdy in a comment about this not being in C anything. It's E (melodic) minor. He says it's based on Blue in Green, which is in D minor. B7 altered is your dominant. E minor is your home chord. Everything else predominant shenanigans. The F is temporarily tonicized. D# minor is a tritone sub of A minor. It very nearly could have been a iii-vi-ii-V7-I progression, but the G minor is omitted. It works better that way given the final chord.
Yup! As soon as we see that Cmaj#11 we should assume the key is G major 🤷
Found my buddies here. The groove is actually in key of G, with 7-3-6-2-5 starting chord progression, modulated to F when he hit that Dmin(relative minor of F) then back to G major.
Im a base player so its kinda clear to me how it's baseline turnaround.
first few chords sound like Giant steps!
They do!
Makes Sense Looking at Giant steps...
I believe giant steps modulates through fourths. So very similar sound!

This has helped my understanding of secondary dominants. Thanks so much! I've always understood what they were etc. but hearing your explanation as to why you were using them really drove the point home. You can read all day, but it only takes a few minutes of listening to someone who really understands it to make a huge difference.
Great to hear I've managed to help you're understanding of secondary dominants! They're really fun to play around with and can add so much interest to chord progressions 😀
neo soul is just random chords that make you go UUUUHH
😄😄👌🏽
Beautiful. What are some good Neo Soul songs to learn for someone just getting into this genre of playing?
Just start with some cool neo soul chord progressions. Try out this one: th-cam.com/video/7xIhPfYDxiE/w-d-xo.html
Very good explanation. Great job.
I - V7 of IIIm - bIIIm - IIm - V7 of IV - IV - V(maj7)
MORE NEO SOUL
I love this progression so much! It sounds so relaxing. That’s what smooth jazz is all about. Thank you for the lesson!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
THANK YOU TH-cam ALGORITHM
Well put
I've been learning about altered chords and then came across this video. Thanks, still not understanding it completely but I'm definitely in a better direction than I was before.
Brilliant lesson‼️Thanks for taking the time to explain the voicing in the left hand (something a lot of people don’t do) 👍
My pleasure!
Just found this, love it!... it had me vocal improvising over the end so easily! Must get on my Nord today!
Haha awesome! Glad you liked it 😀
I'm so in love with this music and everything you did. Also so clearly and simply taught...time to practice!
Great vid on the chord voicings, really helpful, thank you. People are hearing Giant Steps from the top notes, F#, D, B, but harmonically it's not GS, sounds great
tho
Yeah i really heard a gs like prog
Beginning of this video made me smile uncontrollably thank you
My pleasure! 😀
Thank you for your Open minder. I tried it and it sounds well!

Pianopig! This is the most educational video for learning and understanding the purpose for neo soul chords as well as the passing chords that leads our ear to resolve into the next chord. I really enjoyed this motivational tutorial and opened my mind into another way of thinking music. Thanks so much. Greetings from Ensenada, Mexico! 👏👏👏
Thanks Mario! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video :)
Damn man I'm stoned af watching this before running over to my piano to try, and I'm leaning closer and closer into the intro as you're playing, and got jolted by your sudden appearance. Really, really good tutorials, thanks for posting them!
Thank you for this vid!!! I loved learning basic theory and taking it in a “classical” direction but jazz progressions have always evaded me! This helped explain so so much & very grateful 🙏🎼
Wonderful video!!!
Thanks a lot for the explanations!
Im a guitar player, and applying your techniques and voicings to guitar is so fresh and inspiring!
And finally someone who explains whats going on, such as explaining the dominant second as a passing chord, which made so much clear to me and opens up completely new dimensions of playing!!!
More!!!
Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed the video man! :)
I do! Im practicing these in all the keys. That first chord is easy to remember. Just practice the lefthand, after that you add a major seventh chord on top starting from the 5th...
that's a great tutorial !!, finally i can find the tutorial of the style that i really need to learn and i never find the best one. thx a lot dude.. keep sharing of your talent.
My pleasure bro! Glad you found it useful :)
Great exposition.....Now that we are back to playing at home. Thanks so much
I hate when I find a new channel and the person says “go ahead and hit that subscribe button!” Before you even hear a second of their content. Long story short by the end of the video I subscribed! Great video!
So make a chord progression, put chords between those chords, and then throw in like 2 more notes per chord for some spice?
Exactly
Derek Raynaud basically
Just make 'em chords T H I C C
This progression and your explanation are both amazing, congratulations Piano Pig 😉
I Must admit that this is one of the best videos I've seen explained. I dont have much music theory knowledge but please forgive me if i am wrong for asking. I notice that some of the Chords that were played, it was mentioned that the rift is pretty much in the key of C major, however while playing along i realised that its actually played in the Scale of G major.
Here is what i used to determine that ( The little that i know ). The first chord is going to be like the "4" in the key of G while the second is going to be like the "3" leading to the E Minor which is the 6th in key of G......and the rest follows until you resolve back to your "1" in the key of G.
Please don't be mad at me if i am not wrong or so ...i have never been to a music class but i am just asking out of curiosity sake. I would really appreciate it if i got a little more clarity because i wanna be able to make cool rifts like that some day.
Again i love the work and the explaining is sooooo clear...Keep up the good work and looking forward to know if i was confused or right...or for someone that knows better to help me get this clearer. :) Thanks for sharing.
Love it! Super lush and beautiful! Thankful you for always bringing creativity into my life 🙏
It's my pleasure!
This guy is very talented. Knows almost every complex chords
such a helpful video, currently trying to understand the world of jazz and soul music theory. super impressive playing too
Thanks man! Glad you found the video helpful :)
hey please what do you think about a 2-4-3-1 9th chord progression in the key of e major ?
I love the chord explanation, why you take out notes, etc 👌🏼👌🏼
Amazing and thank you again. Such a privilege to receive your depth of knowledge presented so effectively and succinctly 🙏🏻
Excellent harmonic analysis.
Cmaj9#11, there is your gorgeous Blue in Green chord. Pretty progression, thanks.
Such a usefeul lesson. Never met so simple and cool in same time video tutorial on youtube. Thanks a lot!
Love these voicings!
That chord you were playing with your left hand was also called a tri-tone commonly used in Jazz/Gospel. You should do an entire video on tri-tone substitution.
This dude blinks like once every 3 minutes
More neo soul videos like this. Been looking for stuff like this for years! Thank you
Yes man! Beautiful chord progression..
Glad you like it 😀
Dude you are such a massive inspiration 🙌 💯♥️♥️♥️
wow me encanta!! 💜 gracias. Saludos de Uruguay!
This is like melted caramel in my ears
Gotta love that rooster SFX in the background 😂 2:30
AHH!!
Nice morning Jam to hear (10:17am). I'm going to open my DAW and go to town.
Thank you! It is very clear and for me it was more elucidating than other neosoul video's. I can work with this.
Beautifully explained
First time I've seen one of your videos. As a music teacher, I must say, I find your presentation and clarity top notch. Awesome job! Which software do you use for the keyboard on screen? I would love to incorporate it into my quarantine Skype lessons!
Nice one PP ! You are BEST teacher from several I watch ,,,:bravo 🎵🎵🎵🎶
he's like king krule's upbeat brother
You know exactly how to explain the basic fundamentals of these sweet chords, you are a professional music teacher. Thanks for doing a great job helping us understanding the basics of chord progressions for Jazz and Soul music. Well done.
Thanks! It's my pleasure :)
thank u 4 taking the time out of ur day to educate ppl on such playing this beautiful instrument :-)))
You’re a great teacher !!
Great presentation! Thanks
thanks dude, you're the man bro, I just start to learn this stuff
THESE CHORDS ARE SICKKKKK istg
what a video right here... been looking for this content for a long time. Thanks man 💪🏼
My pleasure bro! Glad to provide useful content :)
Nice changes and interesting explanation of the chords and inversions.....reminded me of the opening theme of the US TV series 'Taxi' don't know if that was neo-soul but sure was a tasty tune
The "Riff" sounds like the first phrase to the Carpenters' " We've only just begun," with the word "Just" missing.
the bill Evans version of blue in green is the most devastating set of waveforms there is.
This is amazing man.
Thank you!
I love this channel ❣️
This is so thoroughly and well explained thank you
My pleasure, Sophie! 😀
wonderfully explained! cheers mate!!!
No worries!
i’ve learned things, great video, thanks!
I’m not ready for this but it was fun to follow along. Stretching fingers. Great explanation! Thanks.
Really cool melodies!!!
Thank you so much this was a great tutorial
BEST VIDEO EVEEEEEEER
4:52 tell me if i'm wrong, but i don't think that B7alt should be called a B7 chord, it just doesn't create the same (or more) tension as if you would play a regular B7 chord (maybe if you played the low B, cancelling the inversion am making it into root position, that would work). At least to me it sounds like a pleasant passing chord, but not like a secondary dominant
this is so sick. thanks for sharing your knowledge
You're welcome!
8:48 is the exact notes from One Wish by Ray J
Oh Yes!!!
I’d Love To Write A Track Using These Chords.
Hello Simon,
That’s Great
I hope you’ll explain how to improvise on this chords progression and how to build the same chords for left hand only.
love these chords!
