You changed my musical life from head to toe Before that, I wrote music only in triads, but after watching some of your videos, I realized that chords can be expanded, and progressions can be made richer Thank you very much for doing lessons for everyone who wants to learn jazz harmony, bro
The first time I was told to do something like this made for really cool sound. What we were told to do is take a simple song like Happy Birthday or Twinke-Twinke and on EVERY note of the melody (including repeated notes) drop the bass note a half-step and find a chord to fit. Yes, of course good voicing leading too. Suddenly you have a melody everyone knows, but with some very hip or strange harmony.
Sounds awesome Simon! Had great fun messing with this one. For the first progression, I tried moving the Eb back up to the E so it leads back to the Fm, something like: Fm11 E7#5#9 Ebmaj7(#11) Em7b5(add 11)
For 4:50, how did you figure out what notes to improvise around the top line? Is it based on what chord you're currently on? Did you use some kind of logic on what notes would sound good on the melody besides just playing the G?
Thank you PP. I can’t imagine TH-cam content creation is easy but your content is always helpful and useful. Neo soul is my current favorite genre to learn. So thank you from me! 🍻
Can someone please explain what key signature this is in ? I’m new to music theory and I’m used to using key signatures but this seems like we can use whatever notes we want, how would we compose this ? Or add a key signature to this ? If we want people to sing over this or know the key signature what would it be ? Thanks !
A bowl of blisteringly hot chicken curry with rice and a PP vid....awesome!! Sounds great, Simon. Something to play around with for hours. My lack of voicings knowledge will mean I'll struggle, but that just means I know instantly where I can improve my knowledge! Your new space looks fantastic, love the upright! Hope you are settling in well in Bristol. :)
*...so is it safe to say you can essentially play any combination of (4/5) notes under the top note of the right hand and it will sound good with the (4) chromatic bass notes?*
Hi Simon. I have watched a number of videos on reharm methods, even another one on going down chromatically. I also watched one which encourages you to think about how the melody or top note relates to the bass one. I am grateful to you and all you other piano teachers on this platform for sharing your skills and tips. Now after watching THIS one, I finally ‘get it’. The possibilities and permutations are endless. THANK YOU.
I know it's just me, but the top note starts to DRONE and actually hurt when its played like this lol The song that comes to mind where this happens is "Needy" by Ariana Grande. High G gets hit every quarter note and really pulls attention away from the rest of the song with its repetition.

Yeah that's a great exercise for getting better at reharms!

u can do anything the key is using an EP instead of a grand piano.
Sounds good
Cool Video! Will implement the technique!
Very cool, thanks!

I feel like taking a swig of bourbon on the rocks after listening to this wonderful tutorial.
Sounds like a plan 😉

Great for reharm ideas though!
x5 people were about to hit 'like'...but were buzzing so hard off these smooth sounds that they accidentally hit 'dislike'
Hot damn sounds beautiful
Thanks Derek! 🙏
Would it work if the top note moved chromaticly
It wouldn't have quite the same stability, but it could definitely work - you'd just have to be smarter with your voicing choices.
😮
Can I sample this🤧
Go for it! Just tag me if you post anything using it :)
This is weird but great
Don’t really know what neo-soul is and what makes this neo-soul. Can you explain?
sounds like ashley henry
I actually used the exact same last chord Progression 2 weeks ago for a song haha
LOL "easy."
