Plot twist, Karolina built a time machine and managed to bring the actual Marie Curie to the future for this interview. I love how the board is wrapped so she doesn't contaminate it lol. Marie Curie & I are related. I am polish/french. My last name is that similar to her maiden name but has changed throughout wars & years. I have always had a passion for science. Chemistry is my thing. It is truly an honor to be related to such an incredible woman.
She was from Poland, and she had polish surname - Skłodowska. The surname Curie was from her husband, so I think that it would make her happy if we really used HER surname Skłodowska, not only Curie.
I imagine most people ignore the Polish surname because they either can't pronounce or remember it. But I also heard (from a French friend.) that some schools and people don't even recognize she was Polish.
4 ปีที่แล้ว +92
Here in the Czech Republic, we learn that she was Polish and that her name was Marie Curie-Skłodowská. In fact, until a couple minutes ago, I had no idea she was a naturalised French citizen. I knew her husband was French (kinda obvious from the name) and that she lived and worked in France, but she's way more associated with Poland in our education (or at least she was in the nineties/early 2000s, when I was in school.
Considering the surname is French and her first name is a very common French Canadian name, it's not actually that surprising. Indeed it's actually the top "is Marie Curie" search on google.ca, so it's likely Canadians who have caused it to get into the list. So even if someone knew that she was of Polish origin it wouldn't be enough to exclude the possibility of her being Canadian-born given how many Poles came to Canada in the late 19th century.
@@davidjames4915 "Marie" is a common name in practically all European cultures, including the cultures in eastern Europe, it really isn't specifically found in French-speaking areas, although perhaps English-speaking people in North America perceive it as such. I've come across a lot of old ladies from all over Europe named Marie who aren't French, it isn't as popular a name in younger generations bc younger people who are having kids are more fixated on giving their kids "unique" names. I agree that people probably associate her more with her French last name so that's probably where this comes from, the vast majority of people don't know she's Polish which is slightly annoying considering the xenophobia and chauvinism many people in France and western Europe in general still display towards eastern Europeans. It's interesting that she always made a point to use her maiden name as well as her husband's last name yet (usually male and western) historians generally omit it, which is probably what has led to most people thinking she's either French or French-Canadian and being surprised to find out she was Polish.
I still cant believe most people didn't now she was polish. Not only is she an inspiration to all women pursuing science, but she is an outstanding defender of women rights. She is my daily inspiration to remind myself to keep studying Biotechnology. I am only half polish, but half hungarian as well. I always make sure her true name is always mentioned in a dialouge.
Lol she is not just an inspiration for women, she is an inspiration to all people who want to study science. Idk why people need to divide everything based on gender....

Plot twist, Karolina built a time machine and managed to bring the actual Marie Curie to the future for this interview. I love how the board is wrapped so she doesn't contaminate it lol. I wouldn't say ALL the Marie Curie movies are bad. The 1943 "Madame Curie" film was nominated for 7 Oscars, including Best Picture (then known as Outstanding Motion Picture). Stars Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon, who were both nominated for Oscars, had just the previous year starred in "Mrs. Miniver" (a war drama) which was a massive hit and won 6 Oscars including Best Picture. And months are this was posted, Radioactive had Rosamund Pike who is a fairly well-known Golden Globe nominee.

Marie Curie is actually one of the greatest inspirations for me both as a woman and science student.
- She was the first woman to win Nobel prize.
- Also, she was the first person to win Nobel prize twice.
- And she was also the first and the only person to win noble prize in two different scientific fields.
- She is known for her discovery of two Elements (Radium & Polonium) and her work in the field of Radioactivity.
- She was also the first Lady Professor in the University of Paris.
In fact, she is the perfect example of women empowerment.

The surname Curie was from her husband, so I think that it would make her happy if we really used HER surname Skłodowska, not only Curie.
...She know that, the joke is people often ignore her polish surname + Karolina (lady in the video) is from Poland
I imagine most people ignore the Polish surname because they either can't pronounce or remember it. But I also heard (from a French friend.) that some schools and people don't even recognize she was Polish.
Yeah she is a really famous scientist, so glad to be Polish
what if she really really loved her husband?
Is Marie Curie Canadian?
Me: *dead and gone by laughter*
Same.
Quebecois, seeing the French name.
I laughed at "Is Marie Curie British" after she said she was born in Poland and moved to France xD
Fellow (albeit full) Hungarian here! And agreed. :)
She is an inspiration to everyone, certainly not just women.
Lol she is not just an inspiration for women, she is an inspiration to all people who want to study science. Idk why people need to divide everything based on gender....
In Poland we use her full name in order: Maria Skłodowska Curie not even Maria Curie Skłodowska, so it’s weird for me not to hear that at all 😆
She's an inspiration for everyone pursuing science. You wouldn't say that Einstein was an inspiration for jewish people pursuing science.
But now for real, Karolina is an amazing actress
