  • This month, people across Canada are boycotting Loblaw and its affiliated stores, thanks to momentum from a popular sub-reddit ( / loblawsisoutofcontrol ) . It’s a sweeping revolt but it isn’t just about sticker shock, bread fixing and Galen Weston’s folksy image. It’s about how your friendly neighbourhood grocer turned into Amazon, and why Canada is struggling to adapt to the new competitive era.
Our guest is Denise Hearn (www.denisehearn.com/) , a researcher who looks at how economic power shapes our world. Hearn is a resident senior fellow at the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, (ccsi.columbia.edu/directory/d...) and she coauthored The Myth of Capitalism: Monopolies and the Death of Competition (www.amazon.ca/Myth-Capitalism...) . She and Vass are the 2024 McGill Max Bell Lecturers (www.mcgill.ca/maxbellschool/e...) and will publish their book on corporate power in Canada this fall.
Also, Vass and Katrina talk about crowdsourcing the title of the aforementioned book in progress.

This boycott is a joke. I was in a No Frills store yesterday and it was busier than ever. Of course the prices were still being jacked up as they are every time I go shopping. Most Canadians understand, as Loblaws upper management surely does, that we have no choice. Why does Canada even bother to have a competition bureau if they've never blocked a single merger?

Where do you live ? I live in Toronto , Loblaws, No Frills , and Shoppers drug mart are empty
Local, Chinese , Korean and other mom & pop groceries are more full than ever ? Even Dollarama is busier due to the savings.

@@sjappiyah4071 That's good to hear. Here in London the boycott is having no effect whatsoever. All the stores you mentioned are as busy as usual.

    Bread price fixing?
They changed the 50% off to 30% off?
I haven't gone to a Loblaw owned grocer/supplier in years.
Was obvious during the pandemic they were resting on their laurels, which I didn't like before the pandemic.
If it shrank and the price didn't, I stopped buying it, my entire diet changed along side shrinkflation.
I'm this close to weighing my milk next time I bring it home.

Love how TikTok has replaced twitter for keeping the pulse of society. Keep this content coming please and reconsider the yellow screen.
