- As a kid, I use to think these and other smooth soft Chrysler cars were so neat looking. As time went on , and i got older I realized that while they looked cool. They didnt last what so ever. Most of the 90s FWD Dodge Products didnt stand a chance. While others like the Neon prevailed . ( sorta) But today, for the first time that i can remember, a working intrepid found its way in. Lost and cold, scared and alone, this fully functioning Intrepid reminded me of a stray dog. Theres life left, its already seen so much. Will someone see love and value? or will it sit, and rot, until one day we harvest it for precious metal, and send it on to the big parking lot in the sky? Who knows.... who knows.. Somebody should save that Intrepid purely on the grounds that it's an Intrepid that still works. With the amount that ended up in the junk yard it must be pretty easy to find parts. The Intrepid was a really interesting car that was way ahead of it's time, and, sadly, ahead of Chrysler's ability to build them well. It's a guaranteed future classic simply because it was so far ahead of it's time and a genuinely new way to build a US mid/full size sedan. They sold pretty well in Europe where a front-wheel drive large saloon wasn't unusual courtesy of Audi, though they didn't really last much better here, particularly the plastics which were extremely fragile and seemed to be biodegradable. They were, though, surprisingly economical for such a large car and there wasn't much short of a Rolls-Royce or very top line Mercedes that were as comfortable on the highway...
I always thought the layout of the interior, and the unique design of the drivetrain was much nicer then given credit for. This one has seen some better days, but its still salvageable. Someone could have a nice car for cheap cheap. !
+Jay Smart Definitely, they were extremely highly regarded in their day, a number of European publications said that this series of cars was the first American car to be genuinely as good as a European competitor on European roads. It's a shame the build quality clearly wasn't as good as the engineering that went into designing it. This one really deserves to be saved and shown a little love...
but you can't deny, alot of the older american cars from the 90's had personality's. You knew the people that drove old Aerostars, or the people that would drive a 98 Taurus that would look at your little sister a little too nicely...

i drive a 96 camaro with the LT1, to this day i still drive it. 237K miles on it and still runs decent. solid car no rust but it has its quirks including badly worn out seats and paint that has seen better days.
I bought my 97 with 205,000 miles and drove it on my route for work 500 miles a day...the cam shaft sensor was the only thing that went out and I sold it with 418,000 miles, the 3.3 was bulletproof!

I purchased a maroon one new in January of 94. She became my secondary vehicle in 2001 but 22 years and 211,000 miles later she's still running strong!
I worked for a Chrysler dealership when these were new. It has the typical peeling paint issue. Put a fender on it, clean up the interior and drive it.

I have a 95 Tbird, same color, lost its clearcoat. Must have been an issue with the dye or paint formula then.
@@alb12345672 epa regulations changed and they had to use a different type of clear coat (from what I've been told) and yeah that's why late 80s and 90s vehicles have paint issues.

I bought that exact car (in black cherry with the 3.5L) brand new in late 93. To this day I got more compliments on that Intrepid than any car I've owned. A great, comfortable, stylish highway car that just wasn't very durable. Thanks for the vid.
The concept was good, the design was eye catching. The production was quick and affordable. But it didnt last. If they would have put a little more effort into the engine and transmission then maybe it would have had camry reliability. But thats okay, not everything was meant to last. It just makes you appreciate it more when you see one still on the road!

2.7 don't get me started we rebuilt the engine on a 2000 concorde in outstanding shape with 188k miles on it oil was disappearing get to the store buy some oil and then the oil reappeared on the dipstick. A dealer knowing what we did with it the repairs wanted to inventory the car so we traded it in. Well the trade in we got was a repo truck we go to the auto auction for a family car and see the dealer owner at the auto auction and he tells us that the new owner didn't check the oil and it blew up so they junked it
Those generations only used the 3.3 and the 3.5

My first car was a '95 intrepid back in 2007 a year later after we bought it the motor blew up and we junked it but I miss that car it had the 3.5 24 valve v6 that hauled some ass with a little work but sadly like I said it died

i had a 97 dodge intrepid. moon beam purple (or something like it) with the 3.5 liter V6 and a column shifter. that was probably my most favorite car i ever owned. if i came across another with that spec (mainly the 3.6 and the column shifter) i'd buy it. The seats where so comfortable and it handled really well.
Carmakers need to bring back those comfy plush seats! The modern lack-of-padding sports seats hurt my behind and my lower back
I'n from Europe (the Netherlands), and I owned an Eagle Vision (Badged "Chrysler" in Europe) Vision, basically the same car.
It had the more powerful 3.5 24V engine though.
But although somewhat less refined than some German contemporaries, it was a pretty good car, not even too bad on fuel economy as well! Smooth engine, and a good although not exceptional automatic gearbox, and very good handle characteristics that indeed can be qualified as beïng "ahead of its time". And the seats were very comfortable too.
You could easily drive it for hours without stopping, and get out without beïng tired.
Bought it because I wanted something comfortable and dirt cheap. (US cars depreciate very quickly over here, because of spare parte beïng harder to get, and myths about bad fuel economy that still stem from the 60's and 70's.)
I had a 96 ES. Loved that car. Broke constantly, but it was severely abused before I got it. Ash tray running over, routine maintenance never done. The dam oil filter was rusting through when I got it. No shock it ended up having a rod knock after a year.
Those seats were common, and comfortable. We had a 93 Plymouth Voyager that was a wheelchair van, so the center row of seats was removed. We used it as a couch it was so comfy.

Thats because that died and got scrapped in the early 2000s haha All the toyotas are still trucking. And hondas have finally started getting picked off

That's what I was going to say they were all scraped 5-8 years after their model year. I've seen a 2013 dodge ram come in to be scraped at my local yard. Rusted out so bad it would not pass inspection.
Because Toyota and Honda SOLD more cars than the Dodge Intrepid thus you see more,albeit you dont see as many Imports as you should because they sold 40 to 1 Intrepid !
This was a very honest review, just needs some body work, new paint job, new interior and there you go!

Used to own a ' 93 Chrysler Concorde equipped with all the same options as this intrepid. Even had the 3.3 V6. Very reliable car. Never had a problem with it until some lady side swiped me. Even though the car w as fixed, it was never the same again. Ended up trading it in for newer Intrepid.
Takes me back to 14 years old when I bought my first car for $800. A 1995 Dodge Intrepid ES. Almost identical to this one only mine was the dark maroon/purple colored exterior. Loved the spacious interior, and of course the soft, comfortable seats. Sadly after only a year of service, my Intrepid suffered the infamous transmission failure that these cars are plagued with and I had to junk it.
I would have found or rebuild the transmission. It is still a cool looking car today
I inherited a 1995 Intrepid and a 1995 Concorde. The Concorde lived to hit 180K before it finally barfed the engine. The Intrepid is still awaiting me to replace the drive axles and fuel injection rail. Interesting thing to note- my Intrepid has one plastic front fender and one steel front fender!
I loved my intrepid. It was a great car
when I was about from the age 1-4 or 5 my mom had a 96 Intrepid and wow it had so many issues. horn didn't work, AC and heat didn't work, transmission went out, and more. we live in Iowa and it was marked under "Chrysler Intrepid" so it also was a Canadian version
IA Vagabond I had a 99 Chrysler intrepid (2nd generation), had a battery heater and a engine block heater from the factory for Canadian winters.
Love that car I have one as my backup same motor and just a couple years newer
Never see much of this era Dodge or Chrysler products anymore. Was definitely a neat time for design.
I was gonna buy one back in the '90s. I liked the body style and color. Thought they were cool looking. But after doing my homework , I went with a '95 Camry. Best investment I ever made. I would have been on my 3rd or 4th car by now if it weren't for the Camry or forced to ( ride a bike. ) This car saved me a lot of breakdowns and money throughout the years. And Yes I still have it with little to no issues.
This one is so cool, I remember seeing one of these at my country and being so amazed to see how much this reminds to the 2nd gen Eagle Talón \ Eclipse!
Too bad only a handful were imported at very high prices, hell even today a fair or good condition one would cost you 100.000 argentinian pesos at the used market (even seen a pristine, red one at sale at a collectible car sales website).

Back in 2008ish my dad used to have one but sold it around 2010. I think it was a 93 but was a bluish greenish color... Had some good memories in it as a kid back in that time..

My dad bought a 95 Intrepid new and handed it down to me a year or so ago when I started driving. It has 112,000 miles on it and still runs like a champ. That thing is built like a fucking tank. If I get in a wreck in that thing I know I'll be fine. The body panels are pretty weak but that actually structure of the car is incredibly strong. And spacious! Oh and one other thing, holy shit is it fast. All my friends build these suped up sports cars, and I've never lost a race to any of them in my good old Intrepid.

its front wheel drive without the tight ass sideways mounted engine. I have a 96 Concorde 3.3l v6. 146K great ride / recently began to stutter and stall more n more often

I know what you mean about the seats in those Intrepids. Mike grandma had two 93 models, and the seats in both of them were very comfortable.

I have one in my brother's back yard with 52K actual miles. It has one plastic front fender and one metal! It runs but the drive axle is broken. My Concord made it to 180K until the heads blew off. Most never made it that far.
Those can forward Chrysler cars were very exciting when they first came out. I would buy that intrepid, I hope someone did.
Had one of these with the 24V 3.5 that thing would shit and git.. lol a local sheriff's office had a several of these as marked cruisers.
It wasn't just Chevy...Ford was also toying with the "cockpit" theme for the interior, if you think about the second-gen Taurus. The LH cars (Dodge Intrepid/ Eagle Vision/Chrysler Concord/LHS/New Yorker) were based on the Eagle Premier/Dodge Monaco, which itself was based on the Renault 25. If I remember correctly, the LH platform was designed so it could be adapted for use in RWD applications. Also, my culinary arts teacher in high school had one, it had keyless entry.
I'd buy it. I'm a Mopar fan, through and thru-and have always wanted an early LH-especially a loaded Intrepid ES.
Mine was a 95 ES Intripid with the 3.5 V6 and it was white. Bought it with 150K on the odometer six years ago.
Someone in my apartment complex drives an older Intrepid, and it's in pretty OK looking condition.

The bad Intrepids were the 19988-2004 with the 2.7 V-6..3.3 and 3.5 would run 200,000 miles easily !

Hopefully it was saved. The paint did not hold up well but the car overall was not bad...especially compared to some of the other models around at that time

Dodge should do a remake of the Dodge Intrepid. from the experience I am having from mine I'd re-buy it in a heartbeat. mine is the 1997 3.3l. Im modifiying it to get some more power. going to put a cheap cold air intake and maybe buy a straight mufler.

The Chrysler 3.3 is a great engine, one of the most reliable they ever made. Not powerful or efficient, but rock solid. There is a lot of hate for these cars which really aren't that bad. They are not as good as Toyota or Honda I agree, but growing up I knew plenty of people with them and a friend of my fathers' said his 96 was the best car he ever owned.Not surprised at all that it still runs. Less than 200K on that engine is easy peasy.

Still runs at 177k?! Wow! I say clean it up, make it roadworthy, and replace that fender that met up with JAWS on land. I always liked the looks of those Intrepids. Oh, it could stand a new paint job too. But then again, I think that peeling paint patina may have some potential for coolness.
I had that exact same car in 2010-11, it had 321,000 miles on it when I sold it due to electrical problems. It looks like that one has a replacement dipstick too, both of my intrepids had the dipstick handle broke off. I'm guessing it's a common problem.

, i cant check the car in real due to closed roads, but im afraid of the reliability of automatic transmission and liquidity in futher (my friend said that in Crimea, its really hard to sell them) right now, i've decided delay this matter :)

The first generation 1993-97 Dodge Intrepids is so much better than the second generation 1998-04 Dodge Intrepids to my opinion. If I was to own a 1st gen Dodge Intrepid, I would own a 1993 or '94.
Very aerodynamic car but a nightmare to work on.
Back in the day selling parts for these cars we called them Interped's.
Low miles for a 3.3 Intrepid, ive seen them with 3-400k on them, my Concorde( same car diff grille) is pushing 300k still going strong
My 97 has 249,000 and my 95 had 321,000 when i got rid it because of electrical problems.
One used car I would not buy if I had a choice is definitely Chrysler/Dodge. They look good but fall apart one issue after the next.
an old lady gave me her husbands 1996 concorde. Its in great shape just needs tires and a blend door fix (it only blows heat). Something tells me I better sell it while I can still make some $.

I remember the cab forward design. Now I see how far they pushed the engine up front, I wonder it handled with so much front wheel weight bias.
I had one, it handled great. This car was made when Mercedes owned chrsyler and engineering was first rate.

These cars are reliable most of them just take care of oil changes and keep it fully serviced it will last for sure woman known for years down the street on the corner had a Base white '95 bought in '96 I don't believe she ever had problems out that car. Her son and grandchildren both drove believe she sold it though she didn't want to sell it because her late son used to drive it she bought a 2000 model had problems with it but using wrong grade gas not sure if had sludge oil buildup as Chrysler and Dodge models with 3.3 motors it needed a new motor replacement she now drives a Grand Caravan bought new in '07 still going strong hauling her grandchildren being a busy woman. I think Chrysler products have gotten better not long ago wanted a 300 and Charger remember when these cars had came out in '93 liked them thought they were nice cars as well.

I have a 99 3.2 Interpid
They built the engine facing the normal way and not the normal side mounted front drive car style because the plan was to make these rear drive one day...Well,it took until 2005 with the 300/Charger etc..
They even had a version with a modified 360 ,5.9 V8 in 1993 that Chrysler was testing ! As they were serious about putting V-8's in them,i guess some bean counter said NO !!! A perfromance version with the 5.9 would have been neat.
3.3 was a easy 200,000 mile engine with little maint.as it had a timing chain...The 3.5 was a performance engine of the day with 214 h.p most V-6's had 150-180 hp then !!!
3.5 was good and reliable but it had a timing belt so every 100,000 miles to be safe like any timing belt car it needed to be changed,well Some Honda's needed to be changed at 60,000 miles,thats bad ! The 3.5 was reliable and quick for the day !
