I uso no backpack, at the moment I just go out with two batteries, 1 camera and 1 lens. I’lI would love yo use one though and take some extra gear like a drone, tripod, gimbal and extra lenses. But I dont have a backpack that is able to protect my gear which is the real reason I dont use one. I just have a normal hiking backpack with a compartment for a 15inch laptop. But it seems that these backpacks do protect camera gear properly.

I think the cube pack is a good idea with peters bag but yet again no one mentions the price of this bag, for the bag and the cube you will be spending $525 USD before tax and Matt you have an extra accessory in your set up. So that is $695 before tax in Canada, the full bag with everything will be $675 USD so $893 CAD, say what you will but that is a lot for a bag.

It houses all of our gear beautifully, the zippers continue to perform easily, and now I've expanded it to include some heavy books. Did I mention how comfortable it is to wear with those heavily padded shoulder straps and detachachable waist belt? I've recently ordered the rain fly (more to keep the dirt and mud from Mexico's hugely puddled roads) and the battery case. I'll be honest and let you know if/when I find a flaw with this bag, in the meantime, I'd appreciate your advice on a "much better bag for $300 less". Can you tell me which they are?

Just a heads up, you are using the Peak Design 45L bag incorrectly. I personally own this bag and have used it for a few months now. The camera cubes can be fastened to the bag all along the sides which allows the cube door to be completely tucked under and out of sight. You can even see the fabric loops on the side in your video to which they can be fastened. You have it fastened to the bag at the base which is only for use if you don't want access to the side access door and want to turn the medium camera cube 45 degrees to give you some additional space in the top compartment. This is pretty misleading in your video. You also didn't mention that the top half of the bag can be compressed, slimming down the profile of the bag dramatically.

So all this backpack/bag talk got me thinking about something basic - the mechanics of when you're out shooting. Yes, sometimes we pack up a bag and travel from A to B, then unload it. But when you're out walking around shooting, how do all the little things work, partially with gear in the bag, but also things like lens changes, taking out then using then putting away a tripod, etc. I'd love a BTS video not of shooting, but all the times you and Matt stop, take something out of a bag, change a lens, pack up a tripod, etc. It sounds super basic, but it's something I've wondered - do "pros" change lenses a lot more often than I do? Do you throw down your backpack on the snow in the park or on the street, flip open the whole lid and such to get something out or to put it away while out shooting this kind of content? Maybe dull, but helpful for everyone else to see those basics and how to do it well/quickly.

Your review of the PeakDesign Travel Backpack could have been much more complete, it's my daily driver and it has a lot of features that you didn't cover, such as :
    - The cube system that allows you to adapt the gear to clothing ratio. For instance, with a large camera cube you can fill up the entire bag with gear for a big shoot. On the contrary, with a small camera cube and medium packing cube you can have enough clothing for a week long vacation as well as a camera body with 2 or 3 lenses.
    - The front of the back has a few zipper pockets
    - It has both compression and expansion, meaning that it can compress from 35L to 30L for daily-ish use but also the front pocket expand for 45Ltotal, to pack more clothes for example
    - It features full back access, as well as side access on either sides, and even front access if you unzip the internal divider
    - Two water bottle pocket for water bottle + tripod carry or umbrella + tripod
And a bunch more : laptop + tablet sleeve, tuck-away hip strap, sternum strap, smart ways to make the bag less pickpocketable, external carry, weather proofness, lifetime warranty...
Furthermore, PeakDesign is part of 1%For The Planet and is launching a Carbon Neutral label. I know it takes time to learn about all of these features, but it's important to highlight that although it's a big backpack, it is also very feature rich to the same level of Pete's one.

I actually think the LowerPro 450 and the 450ii are the best backpacks out there. The McKinnon bag actually fits less stuff then the lowerpro bag. I have the 450ii and I have a mavic pro 2 and one extra battery, godox v1, 3 sony lenses, tascam, radios, a7iii, osmo action, lowerpro pouch with cables, memory card case and finally on the back zippers I have leftover things like cables, hard drives etc etc, plus a 13 inch MacBook pro. You might think " but why carry all that stuff?". I'm a fulltime on the go corporate filmmaker and photographer, so I have to have everything on me ready to make happen whatever a client needs last minute. I'm not thrashing Peter's bag or anything, I just think the LowerPro is a way more efficient bag at the moment.

Shimoda bags are incredible. I bought the Peter McKinnon bag and returned it. I love his battery holder though. I just wish I could find a bag that holds a laptop and a mirrorless and small lens. Just small, compact and tight. I don’t always need to bring multiple lenses, so if there was a small minimal compartment with a nice big laptop slot, and doesn’t look like a turtle shell, that would be legit.

The one thing all these backpacks lack is they cannot be locked for 0 access. If someone in an airport wiggles open your zipper and drops in a few baggies of drugs with intent on just stealing your bag when you get off the plane, but you get caught. You get to sit in jail till you can get bailed out then have to pay a lawyer to sequester the video from the airport which they wont give up without a court order. A great time all because a backpack didn't lock down to 0 access. This happens FAR more often that you would think it does. I think Peter's bag WOULD have been perfect had it had this. You mention that it's too big for every-day use and that you still like having the Db Backpack, but I think you under use the second bag in Peter's backpack if that is the case.
Peter's bag will be my bag of choice till I can find something equally good but with 0 access locks. Also if you are reading this around 8/20/2021 Nomatic is offering 15% off on first purchase by first time customers. I don't know if Peter's bag is included in that but worth looking into. Here's what I need:
    1. Laptop, wiring, external drives and power banks. Because I'll be bringing that with me. Perhaps I'll get a lighter one just for in-field camera work.
    2. Camera equipment. A pocket for the house, naturally. With a short lens on. At least a couple of extra lenses plus a place for caps and small things. Perhaps a pouch for cleaning equipment. And ofc a pocket for extra batteries, big and small, and for the charger. Last but not least a dual-use or utility pocket for those times I wish to bring a portable flash. Dual use, because it should also house a Mavic Pro drone. I haven't gotten one yet, but I plan to once my work situation becomes more
    3. Hooks to hook your tripod(s) outside, so it doesn't jangle and so it doesn't make an un-even weight distribution on the sack if it's heavy.
tl;dr: Doucehbag for city slicking and Peter McKinnon for photo hiking.

    Hey Matti,
I’ve subbed for almost a year now, I think. Like your gear reviews.
Nothing wrong supporting PM, just state the obvious and most of the negative comments below should go away.
I have the PD 45l and it’s similar to PM’s bag except his look more comfortable but both are well done bags with attention to details. I haven’t tried PM’s bag for obvious reasons but from the vids, it’s definitely cool and detailed). Would be one of my top choices for travel and some city use.
For outdoors use, I have the Atlas 45l Athlete and it’s the most comfortable and a roll top so you can squeeze a lot of non-gear with gear.
I would suggest you to relook at your second choice with Shimoda. I’m buying into it because of their system and versatility range (30/50/70l + rolling bags). It also has comfort and when I bring heavy setups for photo and video work, I am not limited. And Ian, the owner/designer, is hands on. Same with Allan from Atlas.
Also check out Cotton Carrier belt system for light setup photo work. They just finished their campaign on Kickstarter.
Anyhow, no affiliation to the above brands. Just a consumer who loves bags from brands who care about quality, details that works in real world use, no gimmicks, and passionate at what they do. More options/reasons to buy.
    Cheers!
