I have a 2004 Ranger with 1 original key. My ex husband has the other key and I’m worried he will try to steal the truck so I wanted to make it so the old keys won’t start it. Is there a way to change the ignition cylinder (I might be using incorrect terminology) to achieve this? Thank you.
No, cannot simply change the ignition cylinder. The key's code is permanently programmed into the truck's computer. Easiest thing to do would be to install an aftermarket car alarm that uses a remote to disable the truck's ignition when activated.
Do you have to repeat this process with both new PATS keys? Using both original keys to add new PATS keys…? Or does the new s set of keys have matching identifiers…?
I just re-read your question. I've never had to use my self-programmed keys to make a new key. I suspect that the onboard computer just assigns a new transcode to the blank key and then adds that new key's code into memory.
You might try calling a Ford dealership service department to see if they can cut you a new set. Otherwise, it is impossible to program a new key without the originals.
Why would anybody want to change their ignition and key and reprogram something if they had an original key they would just have another one made so what is the point here
There is a transponder in the key handle. The new key has to be activated using the originals or it won't work. The problem is that the key core has worn out in the steering column. You can't buy a new key core that matches your existing keys. You must buy a new key core and programable keys for it.
So this is modern ignorant question mark what's the freaking Point here if you lose the key or keys and you have to change it why do you have to have an original key to change it this is pretty much pure ignorance right here and I'm not saying you for making the video I'm saying for making it this way
It is for theft protection. The keys ID is programmed into the auto's computer. If you don't have a key that matches the ID that the computer has stored, the ignition is disabled. Using the original keys that are in your possession to program a new key insures against thieves picking the ignition core or hot-wiring the ignition.
But the key is gone. The key is no longer in existence in my Realm. So what I junk the entire truck, because Ford Engineers have no common sense or thought that somebody might get their keys stolen or lost.
The Ford dealership can easily replace your lost keys. But, it is much more expensive than programing your own key with the originals. The trick is creating back-up keys before your original keys are lost or stolen. This video shows you how to save time and money.

What if you don’t have the original keys
You will probably have to have the ignition switch and the truck's computer re-keyed by a Ford dealership.

Yes, twice. Each new key is unique.

What if I just have one original key?
Sorry, but you will have to have the dealer make you another one.
