Summer Fishing For Bass with Jigs, Creature Baits, and Plastic Worms!

  • Summer fishing is easy if you know where to look! Today Matt's Dad joins us as we target bass near deep water with 3 key summertime techniques. If you want to catch more bass, pay close attention to how the guys use the shaky head worm, jig, and wobble head creature bait to locate bass and dial in the pattern!
The guys haven't been on Clearlake for months but they start catching fish immediately. If you struggle to find Summer bass, we recommend you go back and revisit our "Where Do Bass Go In Summer" video (linked below). Today the guys targeted chunk rock in 5-15 feet of water but the key was finding these areas with quick access to deep water. If you could find that scenario, the fish were always present. They knew they could get bit on a shaky head and a jig but once fish started coming in the boat, the wobble head was employed to get the bigger bite.
All 3 of these are simple techniques to use and they will work on your local water. Focus on the shaky head worm to find a consistent bite. Of the 3 techniques, it is the easiest to get bit on day in and day out. If your fish are dialed in on eating crawdads switch to the jig and you'll almost always see the size of the fish increase. Once you've located fish on hard bottom, the wobble head is an incredible technique for catching those "kicker fish" you're looking for. It will cover water quickly, get big bites, and is very snag resistant.
Below are related videos you should check out, followed by links to all of the baits and equipment used in today's video. We've even included color recommendations for each item. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

That's a proud dad right there. I'm guessing he took you fishing when you were younger. He probably never expected you to become a celebrity and one of the biggest influencers for bass fishing. You fish for a living. That's what I call an American Dream . Congratulations. Looking forward to more content as you evolve bass fishing.!!!

Brought back memories of taking my dad fishing... the last one before he passed he caught the biggest fish he had every caught... a 30 plus pound catfish. Soon after that his health wouldn't allow him to go fishing any longer. Take your dad fishing while you still have him around. Mine passed 2 years after our last fishing trip together.

I have 2 favorite soft plastic baits I use first and have a ton of confidence in. Netbait paca slim craw--use it for punching, fishing in grass, Regular texas rig, anything like that. Reaction innovations sweet beaver and smallie beaver (basically same thing, ones smaller)-- use these in blugill color or dark colors if the water is murky. Then nothing beats dragging a big worm out deep in a carolina rig or texas rig. Lot of times I use a texas rig, but i’ll put a peg between the bait and the weight to basically make a poor mans carolina rig....can adjust it to whatever length.

Hey, Matt/Tim. I wouldn't normally ask for specific input from you guys. I mean, if everyone did that, you'd be horribly inundated with such questions. However, we have a bit of a weird weather pattern approaching this weekend. So, thanks in advance, if you have the time to respond.
    .
We've been in the high 80s and low 90s for a month or two, in Central Ohio. Water temps have been peaking around 90. We haven't had more than a passing storm since may, I think. The bite has gotten pretty tough, as you can imagine. Starting on Wednesday, we entered what they're predicting to be a quite long cool period where we'll be in 10 - 15 degrees cooler for the better part of two weeks. Some rain is in the forecast but I doubt it will be enough to muddy up the water significantly. Most days should see winds calm-ish, less than 8 mph. I was curious how you might approach planning a day of fishing a few days into this pattern, and maybe a tip on how to go about it a week into it. I did some Googling but I can't find anyone talking about this type of scenario. Everything is based loosely around seasonal conditions, not anomalous mid-season weather patterns.
    .
Should I treat tomorrow as post-frontal, or is 3 or 4 days long enough for them to settle into an extended pattern? If the latter, what kind of pattern should I be on the lookout for? Is it possible that the bass may treat this like a fall pattern, moving up to chase bait on primary and (maybe) secondary points or flats, especially next week? Will they keep to their summer patterns, splitting between deep and shallow cover, because the water temps really won't drop too much? Seems like if the latter is the case, then the shallow bass may get active, taking advantage of slightly cooler surface temps. Just not quite sure how this might play out.

Just some quick, general ideas on how to think about a day on the lake is fine. Don't break your back over it. Keep up the awesomeness!

Hey man, I’m not Matt or Tim but I do have some advice. I’d say just try not to overthink it. Try to get out there and let the fish tell you what they want. Try a variety of retrieval speeds and baits to see if anything gets bit. If not, try a finesse approach with dropshot. I wouldn’t think this weather would affect them all too much

@@Gulb180 Thanks. My current loose pan is to start shallow in the early morning, figuring the cooler weather can't hurt the early morning bite too much. Maybe take a harder look at near-shore drop offs and depth related pinch points. Probably throw some buzz baits, whopper ploppers, squarebills and swimbaits, maybe even a spinner bait. I've yet to catch something on a spook. Would really like to get one of those. I'll keep a jig and T-rig tied on, but it always feels wrong to throw slow, bottom baits early in the morning. However, I catch most my fish during the middle part of the day on shallow, hard cover and never seem to do very well on that morning bite, anyway. So, who knows.

After that is where I'm not really sure which way to start out. I've really been wanting to focus on deep holds, to work on a very lacking skill area for me, but am wondering if the clouds and cooler weather will coax them out of the deep water. I'm guessing probably not, though. I doubt the 15 degree lower surface temps are going to change deeper water conditions much. I'd love to get on a deep crank bit, and I actually like throwing finesse. So, a drop shot or shaky head bite would be nice, too.

If I’m going to fish camanche next weekend these same techniques should apply right?
