I feel as though you’re speaking right at me. Yesterday I had a frustratingly hard time getting on fish and later that night, noticed that I got goosebumps while walking my dog because it was cooler than usual. Looks like I got some catching up to do. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! Tight lines! 🎣
This is when it’s good that I hate “cold” as much as Florida bass. We definitely had that night 10 days ago. The extra 6”-8” of water from the last hurricane already moved all my fish (super shallow 🤫)
Man, a slight cooldown isnt the word this year. We had a night in Arkansas that was in the 40's last week! And when I got back to the Carolinas a few days ago it is getting into the mid 50's at night. Theyre gonna be slammed up on bait soon... at least from what I can tell. Lookin forward to full on jerkbait season! And dang, you're spot on with that jig! I crack em this time every year on the logs with a jig in the Ozarks. Very soon theyll be up shallow shallow on the bluff walls and points. I can't begin to say how many I've caught a foot or two from shore, when this change starts up.
Here in northern Ohio, when I feel the change coming I swich to using Vibes and large jigging raps. I start buy giving them a hard pop off the bottom and let them glid down on a semi slack line. Talk about a fun time on the water this method not only catches bass but it will catch all pedatory fish in the lake. Super fun!!
Up here in NJ/NY, I believe its starting to happen already, the past few early mornings ive been getting up, its been enough of a change to where im wearing a long sleeve shirt or even a light hoodie just yesterday morning. Yesterday was tough, it was slow and hot. I didnt get a lot of bites ..but they were the right bites. Got em on a small whopper plopper, some small swim baits, and finesse jigs. Great video Matt.
Yupp south jersey I feel it too. Normally when I get out there early top waters usually decent. Past few morning not so much and then it’s back to hot as hell during the day trying to chase the shaded spots. Only luck lately have been on a plopper and a Mach shad swim bait
It’s definitely gotten a bit challenging. I’m getting some shallow top water bites. Seems like as soon as the night temps dropped, the pickerel really came out to play, and they are reeking havoc on the bait fish.
That’s literally the only fish I’ve caught the past few days few pickerel and one dink. A week ago I was slaying 3 pounders now I’m like wtf is going on
@@ClarkeCarpentryNFishing I know some of the lakes around here they've killed off a sht ton of grass. Even at Musconetcong, that was always a good literally lake and now there's like no grass left....has them fish in a funk
Matt is spot on with this info...had a few good weeks early august...last week or 2, night temps in the 50's...this past saturday, it was like the dead sea 😂..1 bite, one 2 1/2 lb'er on a mouse hollow body in the grass...did notice the shad starting to flicker on top all around out in the open water...
I’ve learned a bunch from you guys but this subject is the thing has stayed with me the strongest. I fish river smallies 75% of the time these days. Two weeks ago I fished a couple spots where in the spring and fall we crush them. I caught a few smaller fish in those spots, nothing much at all. They weren’t there yet, they were still spread out. Then we had a few nights in the 50’s. I fished those spots a few days later and whacked them.
We had those cold nights here in NEPA last week and I completely noticed the difference. Now I know what’s going on with the fish cause of this video! Thanks for all your tips!!
Haha this video hit spot on! Maximus and I went fishing yesterday in Chico at a private lake (California Park Lake) we pulled out every arsenal we had but zero luck. We walked the bank covering water. Thanks, video made a lot of sense🤜🤛
Watched this video, went fishing the next day. Started with my normal lures for the pond on question, nothing for the first hour plus. Switched to a nice chatterbait and for the first time, got a hit, saw the fish dart out of the vegetation less than 10 feet from shore, but he missed my hook. Kept going and within 15/20 minutes, I landed my first 2 bass with a white swimbait/chatterbait combo. This will likely be my first lure in the water for the next few weeks while fishing here on Long Island. Thanks man, love the advice
Matt, we been fishing the river up here north of yall and we have already noticed a shift. If you remember, last week we had a few very cool nights with less humid days and in the 80s. We have seen more and more shad balls and going closer to the bluff points heading towards the coves. You are dead on with this information bro!!
This video is right on time. I’ve definitely felt it happening. The night temps are dropping and the fish are on the move. I hit Clear Lake yesterday and it was tougher than it has been. Even had a little 2 day cold front during the day. There was a ton bait shallow, and the fish had repositioned. Fall is coming!
I would love if you could do some videos about lakes where the bass mainly feed on crayfish, and the transitions. You guys are the best! Tight lines boys!
Best video I have seen this year. It's exactly what I am going thru, and I have been making big mistakes, ever since August 3rd it has cooled down at night. Now I need to find them, thanks for this video, I needed to hear that.
A river used to be my escape in september lol. Matt i really like that xzone muscle back craw has played all year for me. Xzone has become a big player for mein the last two years.Had to put more pegs one the peg board than i realized. Thanks brother
A video showing how you rip California swim jigs through grass would be cool. Based on descriptions in other videos not sure if it’s intended to be burned in high weeds or if it’s like getting the 3/4oz jig stuck in deeper weeds and ripping it up and out.
yep, this is me. had the first "ooooh, it's chilly this morning" a week ago or so and then a couple days later could only get half hearted nibbles on a ned rig from little little guys while watching the big ones mope around. guess i'm catching up too!
That compact pitching jig in green pumpkin paired with a 4” netbait paca slim in green pumpkin cut down to the first set of appendages on the body has been 🔥🔥 for me on docks
Great video, and confident booster. So I don’t suck at fishing. That’s what I’m telling myself anyway 🤣🤣🤣. Every year I forget about the cooler nights, even if it’s only a couple of degrees 🤦🏼♂️
Yeah man I just experienced this on my little local lake. Catching fish in shallower grass areas on weekend and the very next weekend they weren't there and moved to some of shor boulders on the edge of the grass in about 15ft of water but couldn't get them to commit to what I showed them. Its alright tho I know where they are and I got some other things I will have prepared for them such as a swim jig for one.
I tend to hang the keys up for the month of August. Where I live the daily high is over 100 and usually there's zero clouds (insane UV). Just too dang intense and miserable out. But that 'change' is coming soon and can't wait to get back to weekly fishing on through winter.
Matt can you speak about highland reservoirs with no grass in this scenario? I feel like it startedd to happen already in Ga. Temps at night have been in the mid to low sixties from the mid to low 70's. Fish are in brush but they have seen everything! Any ideas?
We've already had some cool nights dip into the low 50 high 40's range here in southeast Michigan. I believe we've already had a turnover in some of the shallow lakes. One day I went out and a bunch of dying weeds were floating all over and I also saw dead trees floating in an area. The bite seemed to be tough for a few days around this time and I only caught a couple small pike. Went out last Friday and got a 5lber. I'm guessing we're already fully into fall transition.
I noticed it yesterday when I seen fog on the water! All of my favorite spots were dead! Ended up catching 2 bass on different techniques in different spots🤷🏿♂️
Great information! Is there any reason you didn’t list a spinnerbait as one of your recommendations? or is this just person preference towards the underspin and chatterbait?
Why do you like the Swimon with the Mini Max? With any other bladed jig, you seem to choose the Spunk Shad in its best fitting size. What makes the Mini Max different in your opinion? If your answer is blade size/action, what is your trailer move on the Stealth blade? Thanks for helping me fire up my mornings fellas. Love starting the day with some coffee and fishing vids.
Not sure what Matt would say but imo the spunk shad is fire on any chatterbait. Including the stealth and the minimax. I’ve slaughtered them on the minimax with a 4” spunk.
Great info thank you! When you talk about mini max chatterbait, what size do you suggest? 1/4 or 3/8? And usually I fish them fast, so same thing, burn them on a smaller size? Also I'm a bank fisherman. Thx if u have time to respond
Matt, when you talk about the grass dying…does the same apply to Lilly pads? I live in DE and all of our lakes/ponds are around 3-5 ft and there are pads everywhere. My bro & I caught 2 fish the last 16 hours on the boat. We fished the rock bank, lay-downs on bank, Lilly’s and no bites. Other anglers were having same issues.
Question: I live in DFW Texas. A lot of the grass and cheese has been dying back for the last 2-4 weeks cause of lack of rain and hot temps. This happens every year. How can I tell if this transition is starting? Mostly asking for ponds bank fishing. Typically don’t find groups of fish in the summer like on the lake so is there any trick to it?
Hey just wondering about lakes without as much grass, i k that the majority of lakes have grass, but the lake i fish is basically all Trees and rocks, so the fish are already on that hard cover. Were do the fish go on those lakes?
What about the buzz bait , you get alot of vibration / Noise and can cover a ton of water , the last of Blue Gill spawn is going on right now on my body of water and yoy could absolutely wreck them following the blue Gill . Ball head jigs around cover / lay downs & boat docks have been successful for us as well .

What about bank fishermen for this time of year and with what you're talking about.
Are we finally jigging again? I've been using finesse baits for the past few months and I'm tired of them
Look for water temp change and thermocline changes. Grass die off sucks up oxygen just like night fishing stay away from grass and hit brush
