A contemporary saint in Greece said that Orthodox priests have long beards as Aaron the first priest had a beard. And he justified it from the 132:2 psalm:
"It is like the oil of myrrh upon the head, that runneth down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard, that runneth down to the fringe of his garment".
Its written in the scripture in the old testament that you should not cut your beard..im Greek so i cannot fully translate the part in English, but you can look it up
Him realizing his beard is vanity and takes a lot of maintenance in the moment 😂😂
I was thinking about this in the short above while stroking my beard😂 PRAISE the Lord for His sense of humor. It's perfect 😂😂😂😂
As a Muslim.. I can say we were ordered to grow our beards and cut our mustaches.. Clear text... This guy is just following pictures?
Hair removal is practical for reduced bacterial cross contamination-sector dependent. Once doctors realized their beards were spreading infections, shaving became normal in medical field. As my mom always says, there is a right time and place for everything. God is the master designer of all. Glory to GOD.
"Chat GPT, I need a bearded baby jesus."
WWI introduced chemical warefare, and gas masks didn't work unless you were clean shaven.
Until then facial hair was fashionable.
I always thought that thier hair is supposed to remain inkempt so that women didnt find them attractive.
Shaving is not about looks, it's about hygiene with the least amount of effort.
Leviticus 19: 27
Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
Where did Peter say that?
1 Peter 3:3
Alexander the Great was the first to popularize shaving the beard. He said he wanted to show off his god-like jawline
True story!
Some say each strand of hair holds wisdom
I can’t grow a beard but I consider myself orthodox Christian
Genuine question. If it doesn’t matter about what you look like, what do you want to look a certain way i.e. wearing robes and certain types of hats. Personally, I’m a 50 year old heavy-metal kid and when I look at orthodoxy, I think it looks super rad. The fact that you have like a uniform, and with embroidery and stuff. It reminds me of like heavy-metal Jean jacket with patches on it, so this question is coming from a good place. And for me, long hair is almost like part of a certain look that I think looks cool. So should I cut my hair? Haha
It's hygiene for some people, not just looks.
Thats not good explained.
We orthodox Christians wear beards because the early churchfathers tought us that shaving is shameful
The same church fathers that willingly baptized Gentile converts who themselves were clean-shaven since youth? Romans and Greeks in particular?
The real question is where he get that dope hat
You rarely see a businessman with a beard.
Nowadays yes but in the 1800s businessmen and royalty basically everybody had facial hair. Things come and go.
They suck up to fit in, beta move.
As far as I know, the beard is a symbol of wisdom and power.
There's a fine line between being vain and making ourselves "ideally" presentable so as to exemplify His grace and love for us unto others... take working out for instance.
Men started shaving thousand's of years ago
I shaved because a beard is very itchy on me
1 week itch is SAVAGE
It stops being itchy once it grows out. My face is way more irritated and dry after I shave.
The first signs of true care for hair and clothes looked was when warriors began to carry combs around that was a sign of what we call the beauty the warrior
It used to be a treatment for depression and boots mental health
Interestingly enough, some of the archeological depictions of Jesus. He is beardless.
I’m an orthodox assyrian, we have beards also to show our strength as men, warriors. Orthodoxy was founded on warrior empire like men, Greeks, Assyrians, Armenians, Coptic Egyptians, Ethiopians!
Bless him but he really answered the question in the most christian way possible " Other's did it so I do. " The correct answer is "Muhammed said so! " 🙂
Me, an Asian, didn't have the luxury of beard 😢
We developed a culture of shaving from ancient rome
Orthodox we respect Natural look Rembert kind David Remember Moses or Noah... Let them grow and accept the way you are.
I always thought that they have beard coz they are wise.
The Romans shaved and cut their hair.
I wish, more people could understand what he said
What about in the new testament when it says a man with long hair brings shame upon himself?
So do they ever shave if it’s on the basis of it being itchy/uncomfortable?
That's a good point, people are naturally hairy, cutting hair is the tradition.
Just remembered Mar Mari Emmanuel
What a long-winded reply.
To avoid vanity and to show their wisdom.
"If you look at everyone that came before and really focus on their looks, you'll see they had a beard, so we should also have beards."
10 seconds later
"We shouldn't care about how we look"
Tradition actualy comes from old testament high priest Aaron, brother of Moses.
Man is ROCKIN that beard. I’m jealous! I hope I can grow an epic wizard beard like that someday and me and Jesus can compare grooming notes lol although His will be literally perfect😂
Sikhism has entered the chat.
If you follow the original form of Christianity that says no alcohol, no adultery, no interest then there is no difference between you and a Muslim that follows their religion correctly or no Hebrew that follows their religion correctly
No, they don't believe in the same God
In my opinion, having beard just like Christ and the saints kinda makes a desire for a beard
The Romans and Egyptians weren’t into facial hair and that style affected standards for men to not stand out, especially during persecutions. A big beard is pretty handy to grab onto in a close fight too.
Priests live in fear of missing a bit of lunch stuck in their beards . Bless
The beard is in excellent balance to the traditional hat he’s wearing.
I shave because it feels good haha.
Doesn’t nature itself teach you that it is a shame if a man have long hair?
My beard gets shaved because i hate waking up with beard in my eyes.
The only reason I shaved my beard was military service. I will probably regrow it when I'm done
Not all greek icons show beards Justinian certainly didn't have one, he was clean shaven. But anyway not all saints have beards. In Judaism a beard was pretty normal to have but in Roman history they removed body hair as did the ancient greeks but cultures are cultures it shows you what was difference from the east and west in many ways as the centuries past.
