This is not only my favorite song but my favorite performance! He sat there, played that guitar, and sung this masterpiece with such ease, I was transfixed. Done before the days of auto-tune, and performed before a live audience, he gave an absolutely flawless performance. His voice was smoother than silk; the tone, the timing, the feeling, the soul touching ability he possessed leaves me in awe. His voice is truly a beautifull God given instrument. I can't tell you how many times I have watched this and savored every perfect note. I even copied it to disc instead of the one he released. Not that that one isn't good, but there's something special about this one. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Incredible song from the great song writer Mickey Newbury tried by a few but never found it's feet until Johnny Rodriguez got a hold of it and made it his own and ran it all the way to #2 in 1976. Johnny R. is one of the great song stylists of all time! This is a classic performance, a treat to watch and to listen to.
Agree, I can listen to it non-stop. What a masterful singer, a soul singer. And the material was meant to be sung the way Johnny delivers it. And his rendition of I May Fall Again is incredibly beautiful. And I love the addition of Spanish. Someone said he is so sexy - you got that right. And in his 70's now, he is gorgeous, at least till a few years ago. A treasure.@@cheryllebleu674
This song came out around 1974 or 1975, and I remember it so well. I had just been given my Dear John letter and verbal "hit the road" news from the only girl in my entire life who I loved with the deepest and greatest degree of passion and who I wanted more than anything to spend the rest of my life with. The words in this song hit such a true note with my memories of that relationship, even though that was now 48 years ago. Johnny Rodriguez had a string of really fantastic, great old-style C&W music hits during those years and I own nearly all of the LPs he put out during those early years of his career.
I had the pleasure of seeing Johnny live in 76, at a free out door concert in Denver Colorado,he was hours late as the tour bus had broken down I was 14 Years old.he kissed my older sisters hand and she fainted didn't wash her hand for a week lol....
Yes, he sings with tremendous feelings. Better than most. And yes, it does tear your heart out and the tears start for me. He must be an incredibly sensitive man, otherwise, he couldn't execute the song the way he does. Love it.
This is one of my favorite country songs. I think it rivals "he stopped loving her today" Newburys writing is superb and Johnnys performance is unmatched. I particularly love this version.
My brother-in-law and Johnny are very close friends, they met years ago at Garner state park and they still return there for a old times sake. He is one of the best country singers of all time.
No autotune, no fireworks, no cliché references to pickups, riverbanks and mud, the brand of liquor or beer he's drinking, the moonlight, or the girl by his side... Just a heartfelt ballad of a man missing the love of his life who's moved on while he still struggles... CLASSIC!!!

Keep coming back to this clip. Wonderful song sung with heartfelt emotion, touching that lost love place we all carry, dimmed a little by time but certainly not gone. Johnny Rodriguez has sung this same emotion with many of his songs; just something about his voice, perhaps even more so when he sings in Spanish. The tears fall, I can’t stop them, the connection to the lyrics, melody, Johnny’s voice…it’s all a direct shot to the heart.
