The lack of 2.1 is "not a problem" at all if you have a TV with 2.1. You need a GPU with at least 2 HDMI ports. What I do with my PC is to send an HDMI 2.1 to the tv, and another HDMI cable to the soundbar. The only "complicated" thing is you having to send another cable from soundbar to another, in my case tiny 7" monitor. In such configuration, both, Windows and GPU think your soundbar is a second display. You should only use the "extend these displays" setting. Only con, sometimes a program will only open in the tiny screen, and you'll have to drag it to the tv screen. But hey, that way I can always get the best video and audio at the same time.
This soundbar is phenomenal. I have a full blown home theater, but when listening to regular tv or streaming I do now want to fire up the home theater. I can fully state that this soundbar can replace most peoples dedicated home theater system. It is unbelievable the clarity, transparency, depth and the amazing surround effects; it is seamless all around you with no breaks in sound front/back. The width is as wide as your walls, I have heard sound coming from everywhere. Bass is more than adequate and blends seamless with the main speakers. Note, I installed with the sub port facing me. The processing power and ai to coordinate 21 amps is remarkable. No snaps when I switch between apps. Only downside is no documentation, even on-line manual is sparse info...have to rely on discussion groups. There are steps left out that is crucial in getting the eArc hdmi and soundbar to work. It cannot get better considering its compact size. As usual, top consistant review from you and Kristy.
@@LoganScottY, I’ve had the same issue and sometimes the dialog is muffled even when I have the voice enhancement switched to on. Did you manage to fix your issue by tweaking the settings ?
@@leeskelton9715 I did actually fix it. I turned most of the channels down by a lot and then raised the main volume up and increased the centre channel a little bit, however if you're not watching Atmos content then I think the dialogue won't be as sharp on older sound mixes. That being said I was very happy with the changes I made. Dialogue sounds a lot better for older mixes like 5.1
@@LoganScottY would you happen to have a note of the settings that you adjusted to? If you do please post them and I’ll give them a try. Thanks for your prompt reply Regards Lee
I bought it and I have a large open plan living room with dining area and kitchen and this system is amazing even with the rears up against the back wall.. it’s way better than my old Yamaha receiver and kef e305 egg speakers. Oh and I got a portion with a free Samsung bespoke jet a1 vacuum! Bonus!!
I have the Q990C connected to an 85" QN900B.... our living room viewing experience is almost as good as our dedicated theater. Running the TV and Sounbar speakers together is just awesome!
This is the review that made me pull the trigger and buy it. I was NOT disappointed. I’m stoked about it and enjoying it. Thank you for such a well-made, detailed review that covers so much.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews in your honest opinion if you were in a position to buy 990c or jbl 1300x or klipsch 1200 today for a 20x10 room and I currently have jbl 9.1 and 7.1 which one 8s the best all around upgrade
Major compliments on the discussion voice interruption. Every reviewer has to find its own voice and format. Because, hey there are so many of you. But I dig this one a lot. Keep it going. Ontopic. I came to this because of the Nakamichi Dragon, and wanting Atmos in my renovated house. Still no clue what I want.
Thanks guys for another great review. I have the Sony A9 w/ Sony A95K and I still believe it's the best Atmos system around. And you are so correct that having a Sony TV acting as the center channel is a must. Look forward to the Sonos review!
I love my 990B especially for the $650 I paid for it refurb on prime day. it got my neighbor to turn up their audio in retaliation the day I was stretching it's legs in a test, and when I took it on vacation to an Airbnb open concept with a 24+ foot ceiling great room, it filled the space flawlessly, concernts sounded so lively and authentic, loved it.
Such a great review, he is the best at these. It feels so calm cool collected and at the end you truly feel like you can make an educated decision. Sorry for being gone so long but keep kicking ass!!
Just upgraded to the 990C from the 950A. Got a screaming deal through Samsung's employee offer program. Too good to pass up. Look forward to swapping it out when it arrives. Update: Holy cow! Night and day comparison to the 950A. Watching Dune and Blade Runner 2049 hearing things I hadn't heard before. Just wow!
I bought this back in july 2023 after much research.. at first the app was a bit sketchy. It would often disconnect and then i would have to go thru the whole setup process again.. a few updates later and the app barely disconnected. When it does disconnect now, it will automatically connect and i wont have to go thru the setup process again. Loving this soundbar. The bass is perfectly fine. Im also using it in a small room.
The thing about budget to mid-price AVRs whenever the movies sound Dynamics changed one will usually find themselves having to reach for the remote control yet again! And that's regardless of what kind of centre channel one is running. It's cost me well over £10k to finally get mine sounding away I want it. Stick with a sound bar. Not unless one loves music more.
The Q990C is amazing. It's the sound system in my sports bar basement. And the Samsung Q950A is in my home/office. Samsung makes great soundbars. I also have a high end LG S95QR which is decent.
If this is helpful to anyone. Bought this soundbar for a small room. Rear speakers are great don’t necessarily have to have them behind you, just angled them towards my position more. Elevated the sub on a chest of drawers with the acoustic lens pointed towards me. Dolby Atmos sounds great. Until I elevated the sub I was disappointed with the bass, now it sounds fantastic. Hobbit and Lord of the rings sound great with it. Put sub to +3 and increase bass to 2, use space fit by activating the mic then turn space fit on. Then you’re good to go. Probably better in a large room but I’m more than happy with it.
Just watched the Dirt on Netflix on this system with Q symphony and must say the power is incredible ,it’s like a sonic boom, only way i can describe it.
I've had several soundbars and surround sound package but it was only when I purchased an AVR and a pair of stereo speakers did I realise what I was missing (stereo imaging, thumping bass, fully enveloping soundstage etc) besides going down this route one can always add to it overtime... surround speakers, subwoofers one can even get height speakers and experience a real non-virtual Dolby Atmos experience. Something IMO upward-firing speakers can't cut. Nowadays AVRs are so simple to setup they even walk you through the process. Remember our ears follow our eyes to where the story lives.
I gave up on all the soundbars and just got me the sonos arc and sub and dont regret it. Still here to learn about it though. You guys are my number 1 for sound.
Cannot believe that after almost 3 years of telling us we need to check out and review the ARC, none of you have commented on the fact that we have it now. Knock me over with a feather.
@@BryanRuby Fair enough, I guess I was just expecting the comments to be all about the Sonos ARC and was legit worried it would overshadow the Samsung.
For anyone following your channel they know your deal with Arc. So I think enough said. You had the decency to mention it in this review. I was ready to write a ripping comment on you reviewing this minor incremental change in this Samsung bar, when in a previous review you remarked you would never review a model (re Arc) unless there was a good reason or new version. All I would say is that if the Arc review isn’t next Sunday, the army awaits! Maybe the Arc review, a 3yo product, is more about calibrating against other products reviewed and the Sonos universe than it is about the product itself; like an editorial on the state of things.
Decency? We mentioned it because we were finally sent one. For the record, and this is covered in the video, the Q990C is not an "incremental change". I'll save you the trouble, the ARC review is not coming next week.
Great review! My brother-in-law just purchased the 990C along with a 2023 Samsung TV. Something to note - I wasn't able to get q-symphony working via the wireless connection - had to be wired via HDMI to activate that feature. I didn't spend a ton of time with his setup, but I could barely tell when q-symphony was activated let alone that it made a significant impact.
I got this during their sale for EPP/EDU account sale for 700 dollars plus 10% discount when I requested it from their expert team chat, ended up paying for about 750. So great of a soundbar!
Great review , I have the 990c and the 990b and i can confirm that the bass and the rear speakers are much better due to the fine tuning Samsung have done .Cleaner bass sound and more content in the surrounds with better detail to my surprise. I have no doubt that the Samsung is the best bar to buy for the money, much better than the sonos system .
G'day from Oz Andrew. Been waiting for this review for a while Andrew. Awesome. I've had this bar for a month now and you confirm what I hear. Picked this up for around $750 US (1100 AUD). Connected to a TCL 75"Mini Led and Panasonic 820 4k Blu Ray. Absolutely love your channel.
I'm very convinced to buy this soundbar but I have an LG G3 OLED TV... what will I lose in terms of compatibility? Q-symphony and that's it? Unfortunately it seems to me that LG soundbars are not competitive compared to other brands, even if you want to spend a lot of money.
Bought it today for 950$ on sale here in norway, down from 1550$. Almost bought sennheiser ambeo Max, but cant justify the price difference. Ambeo Max is 2900$, sometimes on sale for 1950-2450$. Paying 1000-1500$ more for ambeo Max is just to much when samsung gives so much bang for the buck in the family living room. If i had a dedicated home theater/entertainment room and wanted a soundbar there, sennheiser would be more tempting. But most likely a full klipsch system will be placed in such room the day our basement i renovated.
Coming from old Vizio surround system it's like night and day. I had to raise volume to 50 to get any good rumble. With the Q990c I got it pegged at 18 and can feel the rumble. The voices are clearer as well. I wanted the Sony but they cost more than I was willing to pay. I'm happy so far with purchase. I will have to put it through its paces this week with music, gaming and movies.
@ZeroFallout1 same. I typically leave my Q990D at around 10 or 11. 20 just gets too loud, so I can't even imagine anything higher than that. Not to mention, the wife would kill me and eliminate my passion for home theater, lol.
I bought this just after it launched for $1200. I also took the sub electronics and put them in a dual 10" sub enclosure that I made and WOW! This system sounds fantastic.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Yes! It's so rich and full sounding. The enclosure is tuned to 32mhz. I wish you could hear it. The voice, the mids, the highs and lows are all so crisp and clear. The base is strong but doesn't distort the other sounds. Don't say no until you hear the final product! It's fantastic, I love just sitting and listening to music now.
I have the Q930C but I had FOMO and bought the Q990C today from Samsung directly for $862 USD after taxes and returning the Q930C. The Q930C is fantastic but I want the extra speakers and better subwoofer. Great review! Thank you, Andrew!
I'm thinking of buying the Q930C since the Q990C is above my budget, and I think it might also be overkill for my small room. But I also get some FOMO so I want to be better informed. In your opinion, what are the major differences between the two?
@@GEEKcron @GEEKcron so I have both right now before UPS picks up the Q930C and the major difference is the fullness in the sound. It encompasses you more and creates a better bubble due to side firing speakers on the rears and extra speakers on the bar. The sub is also upgraded so that's a pro and a con in a small room. I'd say if you can upgrade like I did for $110 over the Q930C absoletely go for it and you'll have the system for a long time and it can grow into a bigger space eventually. You're not missing too much if you can save more money by going the Q930C in a smaller room. Q930C sounds fantastic regardless.
@@Guerradactyl I greatly appreciate your reply. In my country the difference between in price is almost double for the Q990C, so I believe I can do without it for the time being. If I ever move to a bigger place then I'll consider upgrading. Thanks for your help!
You had mentioned the vocals are not chesty but male vocals still need presence. Looking at the frequency response, the dip from 220hz to 700hz looks like it won't make music mids sound "full" or male vocals have warmth. Just because dialogue is crisp and clear doesn't mean it doesn't need body
@@Rik448 Man what's I'm finding out is that most soundbars are like this, and the only way to really see if they are/aren't is to test em out. To be honest, I don't notice it all the time, so I might overlook it lol
Happy Sunday Kristi and Andrew. These sound bars have stepped up their game. With three HDMI inputs, it will allow many of us to connect to it with with other things. The only thing I hate is these manufacturers keep updating their products every years. For me, it makes it’s hard to pull the trigger on many of these products. I am just happy they are finally catching up on technology. Cheers Now for some football. 👍🏾
Hi Brian! Great to see you. I understand what you're saying about the regular updates. Obviously any business has to keep releasing new products to stay relevant. But if you look at it another way - for ex, let's say you own the 950A bar that came out 3 years ago and you need to get something new for whatever reason, if you went to the store and the only thing that was available was a bar from 3 years ago that hadn't been updated, you probably would feel shortchanged. Since everyone's buying cycles are different, it makes since that there's a new model released each year.
I recently bought this soundbar for my 15x15 open concept room. I was honestly skeptical of the bass but MAN! my previous system was a 5.1 with a Martin Logan 10” sub and the sub with this bar is amazing! I ran a sweep on it and it goes down to 27hz I’m really happy with it and it’s simple to use, a plus for my wife!
Good morning friends! Exciting to hear that soundbar tuning continues to evolve. This appears to be a great solution for most folks. QOTD: I think this further drives the point that you raised in the A9 review (and continued in Sony AVR videos) that much of the progress comes from the settings and electronics. I could see using this in a bedroom or living room as a second theater. I still personally enjoy having a dedicated AVR but fully realize I might be the minority. I hope that you continue to have a relaxing weekend.
This video is the reason why I bought the Q990c. I recommend you guys watch the movie ROMA you will enjoy the performance of this soundbar. And by the way Great review as always!!!😍
We just got one and I absolutely love it. I have never heard a sound bar setup that sounds this close to a traditional surround setup. My only complaint is the display on the front of the sound bar is unusable being so small and being behind the grill mesh. We have it paired with a q900c and the pair sounds awesome.
Just placed my order for this beauty. Thank you Andrew for being so reliable with this stuff! I still did plenty of research after watching your video, but you kickstarted my interest in this thing.
Still in doubt. Using: Receiver: Sony Strdn1080 Center: Dali Zensor Vokal Front: Dali Zensor 5 Surround: Dali Zensor 1 Sub: klipsch r100sw Really love my Sound experience - Will swapping to that soundbar upgrade or downgrade? It would be Nice renoving the speaker clutter in my small Living room 😁
Wonderful review of the Q990C. I currently have an old Pioneer AVR for my HT, which I am satisfied with for the time being. Now that I have a listening-only two channel system in my living room, my music needs are being met. When the time comes to upgrade my HT, I will be considering all options as it seems that soundbars have come a very long way!
Just picked up a 77" Samsung S90C and now in the market for a better home theater system. Going back and forth between the Q990C and the Sonos Arc + Sub. Each of them has their pros for my use case, I totally like the expandability of the Sonos system and I've read that adding 2 Era 300's to the system is game changing, however I the investment is much larger. I like that this combined with my Samsung tv would make the system even better and obviously the price difference is a huge factor as well. I've seen the Q990C drop to $839.99 multiple times in the last month with EPP so I'm having such a hard time deciding right now.
Exactly same here, while I have LG C1 65’ instead. The Q990C is now on sale, originally price is 16 000 NOK, but now 10 000 NOK. I like the idea of the sonos arc, but god damn what a expensive and slow-paced «investment» it must be. The arc itself is basically the price for this badboy on sale, so for me it’s a no-brainer; I’m getting Q990C. While the multiroom option with sonos seems so smooth, I just dont think it will be worth it, and therefore I’ll rather get this one instead, and just use a solid wireless speaker for kitchen, bathroom or bedroom as I like. I belive that is the most rational solution.
I have the same TV only 65" and 990c. Connecting the thing is simple as TV recognizes it. Smartthing controls are awesome although sometimes it stops working and the soundbar requires to be removed and added back. Perhaps, that though, could be attributed to my router. The sound is simply amazing for both: music and movies in my opinion.
I also got the 77" Samsung S90C this summer (on sale) and I got the Q990C now on BF for ~$990. For me it came down to compability with the TV (less cables and remotes) as well as the "sound quality for the buck" even if this is a finite system and with sub par estetics.
Thanks again for another great review. I just finished purchasing the Q990C and Samsung should thank you for it! I can’t wait to set it up! Btw, you guys are great together! She always brings up what I’m thinking… I love it! GBA! 🇺🇸
Hi, thanks for your reviews - they are really great! How does the 990c compare to the next Samsung soundbar in the lineup - the 930c? My room is perfect square 12 by 12 feet so I'm trying to find a cheaper dolby atmos solution for gaming/watching tv shows.
So freaking awesome you reviewed this. Been wanting your thoughts on it for awhile as I’m hoping to get this for our bedroom. Been looking at the 900c, same sound bar minus the satellites, since I can’t place the sats behind us. However, do you think they would work if I put them in the corners? That would place them more to the sides then behind us. Thanks again for an awesome vid!
I just replaced my Q990C with the new Nakamichi dragon and let me tell you that the quality and fidelity of the sound coming out of the dragon is like a day and night difference. The dragon is worth every penny. I hope you can compare them and see for your self.
When it comes to dialogue intelligibility, if it's a Denon or marantz AVR with there cheap off-the-shelf resistors & capacitors then I would go with a sound bar. But I can assure you when one goes high-performance its a whole different ballgame.
Soundstage of this bar can be tweaked to perfection within the smart things app. Adjusting the wide speakers has helped tremendously with a wider soundstage. This bar is a convincing solution if you're a purist on the fence.
Play Superstition by Stevie Wonder. Is there mids in the q990c? I'm finding many soundbars lack in this and a song like this ends up sounding more like laptop speakers from no mid range
I have an older Samsung tv without the symphony thing and I wouldn’t be able to use HDMI 2.1 full spec but I am surprised they haven’t matched its capabilities to their current top tv since the two are seen as going together. Interesting to see the arc I’ll definitely look forward to the review I’m still happy with mine, though I do only have the bar (I’d love to be able to try the sub and surrounds at some point).
Is a soundbar a better option than a multi-speaker 5.1 channels home theatre setup? We’re currently setting up a home theatre system for a room that is 4.5x3.6 size. As beginners in home theatre systems and soundbars, we're doing a lot of research to find the right products within our budget. We plan to install a 100” screen with a 4K projector. Would this soundbar be suitable for our setup? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
@@vasim11092 i'll tell what i know and i don't know much, but i think what is what you prefer and people do think 5.1 souround sound is better than soundbar, But there are soundbars with additional speakers that can do 5.1. its your choice
@@vasim11092 if you're going as far as setting up a 100inch screen with a 4k projector. I would look into a AVR like the Denon X4700H. Then getting speakers and subs from klipsch or other affordable brands and aim for at least 7.1.2 preferably 7.2.4/6 setup. That in my opinion would be sound enough to give a 100inch screen justice
Soundbars can sound great but they can't match an equivalently priced conventional 5.1 to 11.1 system. Soundbars are for people who don't want to bother with too many speaker wires running all over the place or the bulkier size. I also think soundbars have a lower life span. But I'm sure you'll be pleased with this Samsung.
Once you set the virtual sound to on in the settings this soundbar sounds great. Just make sure you turn it on otherwise you don’t get the full benefit of the speakers.
The "Virtual" function on any sound bar uses a coded algorithm to modulate the audio signal to 'trick' the ear to hear multi-directional audio where surround speakers are not available. Since you are using a rear speaker kit, the Virtual function will have little to no effect on what you are hearing from your system."

@@robi893 I trust my own ears. With 5.1 blu rays changing to virtual made a significant difference to the sound quality. If you can direct me to the Samsung source of your info in relation to this specific soundbar I would be interested in reading it.
@@spoobsjammin you're right, at the end of the day, it's what sounds best to yourself that matters. Virtual surround sound will play sounds from the soundbar, that usually come from the rear. To try to bounce the sound off the ceiling to behind you. Basically only use it if you have no rear speakers But the important thing is, if you're enjoying it on, then that's all that matters. It's eventually down to our own personal taste 👍.
I have a traditional system and wanting to downsize without too much compromise. I have bipolar rear speakers and I love the effect they produce, so it’s great to see systems with two side firing drivers.
Pretty sure the Nakamichi Dragon is just outright better in pretty much every way. But also about 3x more expensive, maybe even 4x more if you get a great deal on a Q990C. That being said, I'm happy with my Q990B which I got for €879 (new, not used). From what I understand it's pretty much the same thing with a few minor changes.
Bought it yesterday on a Black Week deal (~875 Eur/9990 SEK), can't wait to get it home and try it. I've been using a 2.1 setup (Audio Pro Addon T20 + Sub) for a long time but I wanted to upgrade to a Dolby Atmos system, I hope I won't be disappointed :) Great review!
@@LazerB. I was supposed to get it this friday but got delayed to monday. I'll post an update once I've tried it out! I'm also not 100% if my Chromecast Ultra (not the one with Google TV) supports Dolby Atmos, but we'll see :)
Hey Andrew awesome video! Like many I also bit the bullet and made the purchase after your review - Samsung should slide a few bucks your way ;). Quick question at 14:18 you show a screenshot of the samsung app with SpaceFit Sound, and Active Voice Amplifier toggled on. I'm guessing this was your preferred set up (alongside the Adapative sound mode)?
m glad you're enjoying your soundbar. The images shown at the time stamp referenced were for illustrative purposes only and do not reflect my personal settings, which would only apply to me and my room. Find what combo works best for you and enjoy! Thanks for your support and for watching!
@robinsonbrand Hi Andrew. I watch (and like) every video - thanks for all you do! I am confused about whether to use pass through on my Sony X950G TV? Currently off, am I hamstringing the Q990C from giving me all the atmos it can? What settings do I focus on with pass through on or off? I want best decoding, and perhaps not double decoding. #toomanysettingstoo manyplaces Sorry, no $$ for a 77" Samsung TV to eliminate the question, but wouldn't that be nice. BTW, Samsung support couldn't (wouldn't) help me with the question, advising I call Sony support. Do you think Sony info would be reliable? Would you recommend calling Samsung back to try a different support rep? I consider your information reliable!!
Just got mine!!! It was a huge upgrade for me! I had a LG 5.1.3 with Woocast and the rear speakers is completely dead. I was very upset with that terrible quality. Now I’m really in the game!
I can’t seem to find anyone that has compared the Q990c with the Nakamichi Shockwafe Elite Bluetooth 7.2.4 Channel Dolby Atmos earc. Do you have input? They are roughly the same price right now.
I would start here for sure because it has arguably the best objective performance all things considered of all the bars on the market while costing the least amount of money for the privilege.
I see a lot of comments/questions regarding high ceilings. Andrew does address this sort of in this video, in that these soundbars with upward and side firing drivers are dependent on walls and ceilings to get the full benefit because the sound needs to bounce off. I personally wouldn't weigh height channels/effects heavily because a lot of movie mixes just aren't well done and most of us don't have perfectly square rooms.
Thanks for your great video!! I just purchased the Q990C soundbar which came with a Samsung BN39-01997A HDMI cable. I can't find any specs for this cable anywhere. Do you know if it's an HDMI 2.1 that supports E-Arc? Thanks again! As always, Great job!! 👍
From my experience the HDMI cable comes with Q990C is only a premium, not ultra fast that supports eARC/ 48Gbps. I bought a seperate cable for that. Always look for the HDMI certification when buying a new ultra fast cable. Cheers!
Thank you! I'm going to go ahead and get a couple cables that are certified 2.1 ultra fast as you stated. Thanks again, appreciate it!! 👍@@kits.m.i7694
Just installed the Q990C, which is my first soundbar. It doesn’t live up to my expectations based on all the positive reviews. The center sound during conversations has no mid tones and is not being filled in by the sub. Also no Atmos effect at all. There hasn’t been one more which have the slightest idea that there was sound coming from above. Maybe my expectations were to high, but I would definitely not recommend it.
Hi, I just got mine yesterday and have the same feeling about Atmos, I dont feel anything flying around me... IDK if theres something wrong or if its just how the q990c is... No "height" on my with Top Gun Maverick...
Did it sound better after a month? I went to test the q990c but only from some Netflix and TH-cam source. I thought the Dolby Atmos effect was better and the sound is certainly catered for a large room. But music wise, I thought it was abit disappointing compared to the Yamaha true bar X 50A
This Soundbar is awesome. Thanks for the review. I'm just thinking about modifying the Subwoofer, due to the fact, that this part of hardware could be not satisfying enough for some ppl (like me) You think it's possible to put the AMP from the Samsung Subwoofer to another passive subwoofer? THEN this piece of Hardware would be AMAZING!
I watched your review 2 years ago on the Sony HT-A9 which you seemed to speak very highly of. In this review of the 990C, Kristi brought this model up and it seems your opinion has changed. Did something in the last two years change your mind about the Sony?
2 years is a long time in technology. New stuff gets invented, better products come out. If you bought top of the line phone 10 years ago, do you think it will still be the best option? Obviously not, because there are so many better options. It's not that old technology gets worse. But everything else gets better.
Got both 990b and Dragon. Dragon blows it out of the water in bass, clarity and detail. But the Samsung 990b/c would be 85 percent of the dragon for 1/3 of the price. The power difference between the two is quite a bit.
Sorry, I just received and set up my Nakamichi Dragon. BEST in the West, East, North, and South. Semi-expensive but for what you get it is AWESOME. I also got one of the first 500 so my SOLID GOLD PLATE (1 of 500). is cool as a cucumber (well maybe not solid gold but still very shiny). Very customizable. Super good for movies and very good for music but not in the high tower or high-performance bookshelf level. Will let you know my honest opinion when I can get around to watching a few Atmos movies with it. Everyone Take Care
I understand that they want it to be called A Sound System but when you look at it it's as barish as a bar can get. It's a very good-looking, super-performing squished tootsie roll and I
The Gold Engraved Plate on top of the main Dragon unit is a little misleading. Naka mislabeled those plates. They should have read "One of 500" instead of a misleading "1 0f 500". There is a difference. So far I have not been able to find a specific number of which mine was made or placed in the 500 Take Care Rock - On Drag - On@@spalace7919 🐉
Hi. We love this soundbar and eventually will be moving where we could utilize the rear speakers… for now we don’t have the space. Could we run this no problems without the rear satellites?
Hi Andrew, I would like to have your opinion on this - I have a TV that supports 4K @ 120hz and it has an eARC port as well. I have a PS5 which I will be using to play games and to watch movies using 4K Blurays. Since the Q990C doesn't support HDMI 2.1, will I get the maximum benefit from watching movies through PS5 using Blu-rays. If not what's the best setup to connect the TV, Q990C and my PS5 ??. I don’t understand one thing everyone i have spoke to is saying the jump to q950a to q990b is massive but the jump to q990b to q990c is virtually no difference so why Andrew is saying otherwise i am genuinely curious thanks enjoyed the review though
I fully respect everything you both do. You have so much to try and remember to put in these videos and you do such a great job. There is no way you could anticipate every question we might throw at you. Also, neither of you are pinching pennies for equipment, nor lack the ability to a/b equipment, so I fully understand why you didn't/couldn't anticipate the question I have. I hope you see this and are able to address it, if possible. So...I love everything you've said about the q990c, and it is now at the top of my wish list after watching this, and other reviews. Now I just need to somehow save the money. My question is about building your own system, with AVR, speakers, etc. compared to the q990c. I heard Andrew say that he would go with AVR/speakers for music, and I'm glad to know that, but my question is in regards to movies only, in order to make an apples to apples comparison. The AVR market is vast and daunting in cost and specs. So......in regards to making as identical a sound as possible, for movies, in ATMOS, number of channels and overall quality and experience... how much would it cost to build a system that is legitimately comparable to the q990c in sound, for home theater use? It would also be nice to know the number of channels an AVR would need in order to compete toe to toe with the q990c. Could a person save money and get equally good movie quality sound by buying an AVR and speakers? After watching this review, it appears to me that the q990c is not only the easiest, but also the least expensive way to get a really, really good ATMOS/movie theater experience at home, but I'd hate to go the wrong direction because of my lack of understanding something that may be obvious to others. If you can answer, I thank you very much.
The downside of the soundbar system is that you can only do so much with digital signal processing. Ultimately there are some hard constraints set by the size of the drivers used in terms of sound, and the limited number of speaker locations used in terms of soundstage and localization. For the money, the soundbar system is still hard to beat though. If you go the receiver route, you'd probably want to start with a 2.0 system and then add a subwoofer, center, surrounds, Atmos/heights, etc. That way you can slowly build a quality system that makes the hassle and expense of going the separates route worth it. Something solid like an Arendal 1961 5.2.4 might cost you over $10k in the end. You also have to be willing to spend some time to dial in your system. So it's more of a process and different mindset.
Thanks as always Andrew & Kristi! I was really hoping you would review the Q990C one of these days when I delayed my plan for the Q990B so much that Samsung launched a new one :D Loved the review - you answered so much! And I'm not sure anyone else mentioned this, but adding graphs to help make objective sense of how you describe the sound, especially between different sound modes is EXACTLY what I didn't know I needed in my life!!! Thank you so much guys!!
I dont think so. Atmos performance will be more accurate with newer samsung bars. thats about it. Q90r is still relevant to this day is probably samsungs best bar theyve ever made.
Hi I just got the Samsung Q995C (Nordic version) and must say that i bought this only from your review.. super nice setup, but i missing some sort of Auto setup for the rear speakers.. Did you got any luck finding a solution on this or did you adjust the rear speakers manuel?
I have the Samsung s90c TV coming and was considering this sounder for it. Regarding the lack of HDMI 2.1on this soundbar, could I not just plug the PS5 or my Apple TV directly into TV to take advantage of HDMI 2.1, and have another HDMI cable connecting soundbar to the TV to get the audio ? I don't know much about this stuff.
I brought this soundbar and the s90c tv. I assume since this was a 2023, it would use 2.1. Hdmi arch Is that reason when I go to settings, the dolby atoms is shaded, plus I don't see it on the sound bar. I called Samsung they sent over tech. And he didn't know anything. I am so frustrated. I thinking returning the soundbar. Because I am not seeing dolby Atmos working Help.
@@darrylchristian653, the approach is simple. if you have a device that outputs Dolby Atmos and you want your soundbar to have that sound, you connect the soundbar to the tv using the e-ARC HDMI port on the tv. The other device can be connected to any other HDMI ports on the tv and it will passthrough Atmos to the soundbar
It would be awesome if Samsung could make it to where you could add a second subwoofer. It would be even cooler if these sound bar manufactures allowed you to add your own subwoofers. I know you can on the Ambeo, but it also doesn’t have rear speaker modules. Great review 😊
Speakers like this are making it harder for traditional speaker manufacturers to sell surround speaker systems. Surely they are going to sound better for audiophiles but the other 99.9% of music and movie lovers do not want large speakers spread out in their living nor do they want surround receivers that are complicated to use. The future of consumer AV is already here with this product and similar others.
The gap is definitely closing between something like this and a traditional HT set up. It's unfortunate that there will be some who cannot see past their bias enough to consider them as an option.
Avr’s are actually very easy to use once you get into it ,and have a boat load more features and power and connection options then sound bars. I have a sound bar in a guest room ,it’s ok for tv watching but doesn’t compare to my surround system in any way all. If budget or space is an issue sound bars will do a decent job but anyone trying to say they can complete with a proper surround sound system is honestly laughable.
@@Audiodreamer192-24 I fully understand (and pretty sure everyone else does too by now) that you are not a fan of soundbars. If it’s alright with you, maybe you can chill on the need to convince everybody that there’s only one right way to go about something.
I love the energy you have for this stuff Andrew! Question. If on a scale of 1 to 10, with [10] being the Sony AZ7000ES with a 7.1.4 set up and [1] was normal TV speakers, where would you put the Q990C? It would just be really good to know how much better a proper home theatre set up can be compared to how much you rave about the 990C!

I alrea have it
I have a lg top tier tv so I’m not going to get the best out of a great tv with a Samsung soundbar
@@JayPatrol it would be batter han with a lg soundbar still lol. Nobody uses q symphony anyway.
Compare that samsung soundbar with the jbl 1300x
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm glad it's working for you!
I'm having an issue hearing dialogue on the Q990C when heavy action scenes are happening and I even have the centre channel at MAX. Any tips?
@@LoganScottY, I’ve had the same issue and sometimes the dialog is muffled even when I have the voice enhancement switched to on. Did you manage to fix your issue by tweaking the settings ?
@@leeskelton9715 I did actually fix it. I turned most of the channels down by a lot and then raised the main volume up and increased the centre channel a little bit, however if you're not watching Atmos content then I think the dialogue won't be as sharp on older sound mixes. That being said I was very happy with the changes I made. Dialogue sounds a lot better for older mixes like 5.1

Just ordered this through Samsungs employee program for about 650 and I can’t wait to see the performance. Coming from a Vizio m6 5.1.2 system

Got the Q990C recently for my media room, loving the experience already. Having a “blast”. Couldn’t agree more with you Andrew!
Just wow!
Using q950a, is it worth to upgrade to 990C. If 950a is 7 points, how much is 990C ?
cant wait!
Im not into soundbars. But if you say it can compete with a traditional home theater, its pretty impressive how far theyve come.
If you're building a 5.1.2 setup around 2-way bookshelf speakers and say an AVR this bar can 100% compete and even embarrass a lot of the competition.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews
I doubt that….
Yes ! Absolutely!
A simple 5.1.2 surround system with avr will always be superior to a sound bar at any price point.
Nobody wants to jinx a future review of the ARC. That's my take.
Ah darn. Thanks Andrew, I’ll stay tuned regardless.
I picked this up for $1,155 Aussie dollars after seeing this review and some others - bloody hell, I love it!!!
Only the Q-symphony
When I was young I loved watching car shows in the morning on TNN, and now I watch this. Keep up the good work A&K👍
I really appreciate that! (I used to watch the car shows in the morning with my Dad)
I bought this just after it launched for $1200. I also took the sub electronics and put them in a dual 10" sub enclosure that I made and WOW! This system sounds fantastic.
I have a 13 inch focal chorus 700 sub is it possible to connect somhow
No
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Yes!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews And why no? Please explain without hearing it.
This exactly what I’m missing. Installed the bar this week and don’t like it.

Actually it's 4 times the price of Q990C

Wahooo i always love you guys. i but this soundbar and blowing away by the sound even blow my traditional home theatre
away ...when it come to movies
Thanks for sharing your experience. It's a great system.
How does this soundbar perform when playing music from an iPhone using AirPlay?
Got my Q990C a few weeks go. Its an amazing improvement over my previous homepods
Do you like more than Jbl 1300x ?

Basically only use it if you have no rear speakers
But the important thing is, if you're enjoying it on, then that's all that matters. It's eventually down to our own personal taste 👍.
I have a traditional system and wanting to downsize without too much compromise. I have bipolar rear speakers and I love the effect they produce, so it’s great to see systems with two side firing drivers.
I just downgraded myself to this soundbar 😅
My OCD always tweaking when I see that the two slabs are not level. Can’t you adjust them👀
Pretty sure the Nakamichi Dragon is just outright better in pretty much every way. But also about 3x more expensive, maybe even 4x more if you get a great deal on a Q990C. That being said, I'm happy with my Q990B which I got for €879 (new, not used). From what I understand it's pretty much the same thing with a few minor changes.
Wait a minute!!! Are we getting a SONOS ARC review in the future guys?? lol
Using q950a, is it worth to upgrade to 990C?
Hey Andrew or anyone, did you do a manual speaker calibration, or did you just stick with the spacefit sound feature?
Bought it yesterday on a Black Week deal (~875 Eur/9990 SEK), can't wait to get it home and try it. I've been using a 2.1 setup (Audio Pro Addon T20 + Sub) for a long time but I wanted to upgrade to a Dolby Atmos system, I hope I won't be disappointed :) Great review!
It is a great deal. I paid $1000 and thought it was a great deal but your price beats that.
Have you tried it? Or you are still waiting...

Sorry, no $$ for a 77" Samsung TV to eliminate the question, but wouldn't that be nice.
I bought Q990c lastweek, with samsung Q-symohony tv… Experience is 💯💯💯
The jbl 1300x are better and have better bass
Why use crappy tv speakers too?
Me quietly making note of what to get for a sound bar when I need one. Thanks guys.
👍@@kits.m.i7694
What is the interest to buy HDMI 2.1 cable to connect soundbar to tv ?
I use the HDMI cable that came with the bar and I can passthrough Dolby true HD Atmos with no issues, eARC works fine with it as well.
Question. Did you have Dolby Atmos ON in tv? Maybe it is just setting.
I have got mine and the Atmos effects is really good... For that u should do proper setting and proper input... I am streaming Netflix from my Xbox...
Does it feel better now with calibration are you getting ATMOS
What would you choose as your ultimate decision, Sony tv + HT-A9 or Samsung tv + Q990C? 🤔 Or a mix maybe? Answer please 🙏
If you had a small room would you go for Samsung 990c or Samsung 930c?
I have the 990C and the HT-A9 and I can say the 990C sounds much better.
Thanks, good to know!
Fabulous job as always guys I’m getting a Neo QLED 55 inch TV and I think I’m convinced to go with the Samsung 990C sound bar
$4k isn't "semi-expensive"; it's ridiculous. For that price, I want Tom Cruise to fly the actual plane into my living room.
To be fair, the Dragon is NOT a soundbar, Nakamichi say so.
I understand that they want it to be called A Sound System but when you look at it it's as barish as a bar can get. It's a very good-looking, super-performing squished tootsie roll and I
1 of 500... You better check on that. Caleb posted his review and showed live in his unboxing video that he got 1 of 500.
If you dont prefer the rears, just get the Q900. Soundbar and Sub are the same
Afternoon Andrew and Kristi👍
Morning KJ!
Kindly consider this request and reply me.
Thank you.
Yes! please answer this question! Many gamers are reviewing this!
Yeah I need this info
Can you not just plug your ps5 into the tv? Do you need to go through the sound bar?
@@UnitedKingdomRC That's what I thought - what reason would anything else need to run through the soundbar?
@@Darkk_Sagethat’s what I’m trying to figure out, I have a 4k 120hz Samsung tv with an e arc slot, ready to go. Why does the lack of 2.1 limit me?
Looking forward to seeing your review on the sonos arc.
Will be cool to do one on the Arc, x2 sub gen3 and a pair of the era 300
I have the Samsung Q90R. Do you think the Q990C is worth the upgrade? Not sure how much improvement comes in 4 years of models. Thanks
I dont think so. Atmos performance will be more accurate with newer samsung bars. thats about it.
Q90r is still relevant to this day is probably samsungs best bar theyve ever made.

I just got the Samsung Q995C (Nordic version) and must say that i bought this only from your review.. super nice setup, but i missing some sort of Auto setup for the rear speakers..
Yes sir.
@@darrylchristian653is your HDMI cord in the eArc port?
I have an
Earc 2.1 and it in earc port. I was thinking since the TV doesn't use 2.1. I would need to change it?
Take the amp module out of the Samsung one and install into a proper subwoofer
