In this week’s episode, we discuss Lightroom's darkest photo editing secret and how you can unlock the power of this incredible yet mysterious editing tool. What's so interesting about this tool is that it isn't something that was just added to Lightroom. It's actually been available for years, but the name of this tool along with the confusing nature of it has turned this into one Lightroom's most least used features. In this video, we'll unpack the wizardry behind the Calibration Tool, how it works, and how you can drastically improve your landscape photos by using this feature. I hope you enjoy this week's episode and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

Mark, this has been most eye-opening for me. I found myself opening old images and playing with HSL and Calibration. The effect was mesmerizing.

This is one of the most useful tools I have ever seen when it comes to editing landscapes. I never knew how to use the calibration sliders and you made the difference between the calibration and HSL sliders much clearer for me. I went back and redid some older photos and what a difference. Just brilliant! Thank you.

Hi Mark, Thanks for this great video and introducing this new tool (for me) for color editing. I am excited to try this out on my past photos as well as new ones. I appreciate all of the wonderful videos you share with your followers!

What a brilliant video and, yes, haven't seen it talked through anywhere else! Digitising old slides and was using white balance, curves and HSL. Works a lot of the time but this provides a very good alternative where other methods fail or are overall short on result. Defintely added to the workflow options. AND understand it as well. Thank you! Now subscribed.

This was GREAT! I've never thought of these in terms of local vs. global, but that's a GREAT way to think about it! So much fun to play with these and this helped me understand them much more. THANKS!!

Excellent video. I started using the calibration tool when you demonstrated it in a previous video, as I'd always avoided it thinking it sounded a little too technical. It completely changed the way I approach colour in my editing.
My primary use for this tool is to get good separation between my hues in a photograph so that the individual elements in become clearer. I find this is extremely useful for scenes where there is a lot of the same colour e.g. woodland, where all the greens can merge into one indistinguishable blob. For me the hue sliders really bring out the differences between individual plant species that would otherwise be lost if some tweaking wasn't done.
Thank you for yet another gem of a video!

I have never used this feature, but wow, this video was a game-changer for me. I struggled with editing some fall shots from a couple of years ago, but just edited one of them in about 10 seconds. I also really appreciate you using the simple color swatches to explain this, as that helped explain editing colors better than anything else I have seen.
Also, “solo mode” is amazing, so another takeaway from this video. I just subscribed and am looking forward to discovering other gems on your account.

The only one that didn't work for me was the last one. The sky got weird very fast. In fact all that magenta in the original photo itself was too much. I think maybe masking that portion out while making the adjustments might work.

I learned about the blue primary from a portrait photog many years ago who claimed it added a nice punch to most skin tones. I hardly ever photograph people but I've been using it for years for landscapes and boat images. Your description of the local / global results in the HSL vs primary channels is probably the best I've seen yet. Nice job.
