Why can't I use the drive cage with two 2280s on the EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini?

- Several viewers have asked about the ability to use 2 2280s AND the drive cage on the HP EliteDesk 800 G4 mini. This video should answer the question and some solutions.
One viewer was able to get it to fit but "your mileage may vary" • February 25, 2024
Just mod the caddy with a Dremel and be done with it. All you need with the Dremel is a cut-off wheel, a metal file, and some sandpaper - takes about 10 minutes. I've done it with one of my G4's, and it works great. I'll do my other two G4's shortly. While 2230 drives work, they're not a particularly good solution. They lack the performance, endurance and capacity of 2280 drives.

I was just about to say this same thing. That this is a problem a Dremel can solve.
Even a good pair of tin snips will do the job.
@@MajorisMons Tin snips? My experience with Dremel caddy surgery on three of these G4's suggests that it wouldn't turn out well - the steel is surprisingly think and tough, especially at the curved edges. Stick with a Dremel. I'd tell you where I got my instructions for the cuts, but this post would probably get deleted like most my other ones.
I personally 3D printed a slim 2.5 bracket from PETG. I also had to use different screws to secure it down
Do you have the stl file uploaded somewhere? Might be something to explore for a future video.

I believe I used this model from thingiverse, thing:6504445/files. I can't put the full link, it seems to trigger TH-cam automoderation.
I recommend to print this in PETG, not PLA, as PLA might not withstand the heat intside of the PC.
The reason that second NVMe option interferes with the 2.5” caddy…. The battery holder is taller than a “standard” M.2 connector… so that second M.2 connector was picked as a taller model, IN ORDER TO ALLOW THE 2280 drive to clear it.
@@ernestgalvan9037 I just cracked open my G4 and you're so right. The connector needs to be so friggin high to clear the battery. Always wondered why they did that. Does seem like a bit of a wonky decision that ultimately caused the loss of a drive.
I cut out a significant portion of metal in the HDD cage, and it fits 2 x NVMe and HDD ;)
Are you left with the basic outline of the cage?

One M2 socket is higher and it supports the cage when we have an NVMe SSD inserted there.
I cut this metal so that the socket with the NVMe drive inserted enters a bit into the cage when the cage is mounted. When you mount the HDD, it is still quite high in the cage and does not interfere with the NVMe drive.

What about thermal dissipation having the ssd on the 2 m.2?
ok, so here's the next paradox, I put 2 2280's in and was just going to remove the drive cage for now but now since the drive cage is gone every boot gives you a fan malfunction beep and error. I've been thru the bios but didn't see anywhere you can bypass the error since the drive cage with the extra fan is gone, any ideas?? this is a great series of videos by the way.
So you must have a 65w unit then? I'll look to see if there is anything in the BIOS to ignore it. Or at least not have you click something. Wondering too if the fan connector was domehow shunted if it would stop complaining. Me sounding like I know how this would be done 😀
Based on that 2230 -> 2280 adapter, you have a 3d-printer. How about printing a little part that has a tight slot for the SATA drive rear end (that tight that the SATA drive would stay in the slot just by inserting it) and 2 little wings with screw holes for to make the slot secured in place using the screws that would normally hold the caddy (on the left). Then just a piece of foam etc on top of the RTC battery to support the SATA drive weight on the connector end? Alternatively, instead of a slot, just a sideways-wings with 2 more little screw holes where you could use the SATA drive mounting screws.
You are very observant. I do wish I had a 3d printer. The 2230 extender was from an eBay seller who did 3d print it.
Im assuming the fan will run slightly faster ane therfore more noise? Great video man, about to upgrade mine :)
Asking if the fan will run faster because of the lack of the drive cage?
Going to get an nvme to sata adapter, and try that out with simple home made brackets.
I ran into the same problem. I just left out the tray and SSD.
I've never owned a model of these with the dual M.2 slots to have this problem- but I like to think I could velcro the SSD to the top of the case at the last moment just before pushing the top back in place. It would take a little finagling for sure, but I **think** I could make that work. For years building PCs, materials like velcro and zip ties were standard gear for me as long as it made something work that wouldn't via conventional means. My other thought is adding some sort of heat-sinks/risers to two 2280 M.2 drives that the SSD can lay atop and attach to. Also, I know it would be a bit more work than it's probably worth it, but I know I could fabricate something to attach to the drive cage screw holes that simply holds an SSD in place. Now I want to get a G4 model just to experiment with it.
I like your ideas. You could have hours of "fun" with the G4. Keep an eye out on eBay. The CPU is what seems to keep the price up. A 8500t is 2.5 times the price of a 6500t.
I've tried velcro or magnets to hold the ssd to the lid, together with a sata+power extender cable. Doesn't work - the tiny fragile FFC sata connector pulls out of the socket too easily. The best solution (without modding the caddy) is to prop the SSD on four 10mm m3 nylon screws. You can adjust the height of each screw independently to level the SSD and provide good clearance above the M.2 slot, and still close the case lid.

@@dktol56 yeah I've no doubt that's the simplest and best method. I've seen a few listed though minus the drive caddy. I personally just like the challenge of coming up with something different that's a decent solution just for the sheer challenge of it.
Do you have any Dell Optiplex 7080 to check the same issue? The caddy seems to have different shape and mounting points.

Someone uploaded a HDD mount on Thingverse for these EliteDesk 800 G4/ProDesk 600 G4 models (and their other similar generations) that I might try printing and using. Only way I can think of getting everything you want is to just make it yourself!
A friend printed that caddy from Thingiverse for me. Doesn't appear to fit the Elitedesk G4, so guessing the Prodesk is slightly different.

you can run both 2280s and run a ssd in the cady, they fit as they are made to.
Unfortunately that caddy is not setup to work with two 2280s. One reason folks have had to cut down the caddy to make it work. Two 2230s work but the center m.2 is set too high so the caddy won't sit correctly without wobbling.
@@handmedowntech I have not seen that issue, I run 2 2280's and a ssd.. once the cady is screwed down it works just fine. I have seen a fitment issue with using the wrong screw for the m.2 and it causing issues for the cady.. I made a short talking about it.
I like it. I checked out the short and I'll try it again myself. I'm thinking though this is one of those "your mileage may vary" sort of things - since obviously lots of folks can't get it to work and have resorted to cutting up with caddies. I'll also add a link to the short in the text for my video.

Whats wrong with an SSD? OS on the NVME and the SSD for overspill storage.
That works too. That way your OS is on a speedy drive.
I just watched a video by a guy called Microchipflip and he puts 2 2280s and the caddy in and doesn't even mention any issues, I got it to seat by cutting the edge of the foam underside a bit and leaving the 2230 screw out. by the way how can you tell which is the 2x slot and which is the 4x slot on my 705 G5? I can't find documentation anywhere!!!
I was looking for info on those ports - the specs do say one is 2x and the other 4x but even the service manual doesn't say which is whuch. My personal guess would be that the one along the side is 4x and the other is 2x - with the idea that the one that is in the center is an "extra" one they added with the G4. But let me know what you find. I noticed the 800 G4 says both are 4x - same for the G5. Wonder why they did it different for the 705? Also the 705 G4 had 2 2x ports. But I'm sure you knew that :)
@@handmedowntech definitive answer, the slot closest to the side of the case is the 4x. tested and confirmed

*Be very careful with the 2.5" HDD cable, it is very rigid and loosens easily. It caused a short for me, burning the motherboard components that feed the drive, fortunately nothing else was affected and now I can only use M2 SSDs.*
Yikes. I've had that cable come out several times. Thankfully nothing as bad as that. Sorry to hear that happened.
Honestly, if you removed the SATA caddy from the G4 initially with the wireless card pre-installed, I don't see why you can't replace it with both M.2 installed. It's not like, by adding a couple of M.2 to the motherboard would add extra height, all three devices (wireless card and both M.2) are the same height. I think your issue is, it's not clipping into the heatsink and chassis correctly, and giving up too soon. I find on my G9, i need to squeese the chassis a little to get the SATA caddy back in.
However, if you're trying to transplant a SATA from another model into the case, it's gonna be incompatible.
I wonder if HP fixed the design along the way. The G4 riser for the m.2 and wifi are around 3 to 4 mm high but the m.2 that comes under the caddy is more like 9mm. That height has necessitated the cutting of caddies or the use of 2230s.
@@handmedowntech HP seems to have a different caddy for every model until you reach the G6, and then it becomes more standardized.
My thinking, if the caddy can clear an M.2 2030, then it should clear a 2080 since NAND chips are mostly the same height &thickness. The only thing that can prevent it from clearing is the head of the 2M screw. For an experiment does the caddy slide on, if you don't use a screw to secure the M.2?
Sorry, doesn't work. There is a channel on the bottom of the caddy that allows it to lock onto the m.2 riser. But if you put anything into the slot that extends outward it won't fit. The 2230 angles downward so it doesn't touch the bottom of the caddy and allow the caddy to attach normally.

Could you please test what fans would fit in the g2 800 mini I was hoping to get some extra cooling if the generations improved on the fan but can’t find anyone who has tested it.
Well you really only have the two, one for the RAM and the other on the 65w caddy. Are you wanting more fans?

I don't think there are too many choices as to fans since they are made for the specific model. If I see something I'll post a reply.
@handmedowntech after owning both the 400 G2 and 800 g2 for awhile, it looks as if both use 2 different fans. One with smaller and more numerous blades, and the other with thicker ones. I have no idea if this creates more airflow, but I intend to test it later

So have the smaller innards and forgo the caddy? How do you then secure the innards from knocking around?
