I literally gasped out loud when I saw that you did this. Such an underrated classic, especially for girls of a certain age range. Such a beautiful movie.
this movie + a secret garden were my childhood!! i adored this movie so much growing up. it was my go-to to watch when i was at home sick from school lol
I thought this was A Secret Garden before I read your comment. I know I saw and loved that, but now I'm not sure if I saw this or not. Interesting how multiple people correlate those two movies.
@@theshadowfax239 ooh i think back in the day the VHS tapes came in a box set, and i think there were commericals where you could order them as a "collection" if iam remembering correctly. it seems like they were very intertwined.
Miss Minchin is a piece of work. So much of her insecurity abusive behavior and jealousy is being projected towards Sara. I’m glad she got the Karma she deserves. Btw its harp she’s playing not a cello.
It's alright. I loved this growing up. I used to cry a scene. I had this movie on a shared disc once. It had two moves on it. The Secret Garden and this movie.
This is such a sweet movie! You're definitely not the target audience for it. I'm so glad you were such a good sport and gave it a shot. The book was classic! It wasn't so much about all girls being princesses just for being girls, but about how even the poorest girl can be a princess when she shows kindness, gentleness, helpfulness, courteousness, and generosity with what she has. Sarah was just as much a princess when she was rich as when she lost everything because in both circumstances she chose to act like one in the best possible way. I feel like that theme didn't quite come across the same way in the movie as in the book, but you still picked up on it perfectly.
The thing with all those officers showing up is that they’re not only there for Sara. They obviously came to take the stolen goods that Minchin told them about.
Also fun fact: the girl that plays Sara is actually an heiress from an incredibly wealthy family in America! In 2002, she and her brother filed a lawsuit for $6 Billion against a dozen of her family members because their trusts had been misappropriated by them.
Woah, that is very interesting. I was wondering if the actress grew up to be a star, but now that you say this, I can see that presence and class that she exudes is obviously not acting lol. Great casting
Btws, this is set in WWI, 1914-ish since it's early in the war. The US doesn't get involved until 1917. So if you're not familiar with history, think more along the Victorian-type society (actually Belle Epoque - with Titanic as another cultural landmark).
Thankyou all for the really lovely comments. I hope my style of reaction was still enjoyable to watch, even though the movie didn't hit me in the feels. With that being said "PAPA!!!" is a line that has stuck with me, and now I use it jokingly any time something mildly upsets me lol. Do you all do that too?
Actually this is world war 1, due to the yellow poison gas in the trenches and the early versions of cars in this movie. Also the women’s clothing is 1910s
The GASP I let out when I saw this on my homepage just now. this movie was my CHILDHOOD. I still have the VHS and am waiting for the day my daughter is old enough to watch it with me!
Well this is an unexpected treat! This is the first movie my mom took me to, just us, when I was a child, so it has a special place in my heart. The book is good, too, but it has a different ending - her dad really is dead, but the family next door takes her in. It’s all rather twee and sugary, tho, so I’m curious to see what you think.
Sara's character is Very important especially in her morals; she treats everyone with compassion and equality (a very rare thing for the time), and she uses her imagination to Help the other girls through difficulty like with Lottie and even sharing that her mother is dead too. and the biggest moral she showed was giving what little she had to a family that had less and keep giving to others. the boy gave her his money and she gave that kindness forward; from a few cents, to a cake, to a flower for a grieving man. she didn't know these people but she gave to them in their time of hardship and grief. it's a very important and special moral to have especially now with homelessness numbers up. Sara's morals of kindness are something to remember; you don't have to give money, give a homeless person a sandwich or water or a tray of veggies. that is worth even more than money: it's priceless. people should take care of each other; give kindness.
Love this movie. Every time I see this it reminds me of The Secret Garden . I saw this around the same time that I discovered the 1987 Secret Garden by Hallmark. If you haven’t seen the secret garden you should watch that sometime.
LOVE THIS! Was one of my favorites from Blockbuster- like tried to choose it every week. @promisemochi mentioned Secret Garden from '93. If you get a chance it is a great similarly minded film based on a book from the same author as A Little Princess. Fun fact: this is not set in the 40s for WWII. It's the Boer War her father goes to fight in...1899-1902
I love this movie. It's almost a perfect adaptation of the book. Although this movie changed the ending of the book. In the book and other adaptations of this movie. Sara's father is actually dead and is adopted by his friend who has been looking for her.
This is a beautiful movie and so glad to see you embracing it - I'm halfway through the reaction but thought I should mention that this is set in 1914/first world war as opposed to the 40's/second world war.
This and The Secret Garden are a must watch for everyone especially kids. And an added bonus is this movie is directed by one of my favorite directors, Alfonso Cuaron.
41:39 my parents divorced when I was a 10 year old girl and I cried for a little bit, but it wasn’t that traumatizing in anyway. My dad would work for hours and then come home and work online for the rest of the time. I didn’t really talk to him much. But when they made it so that I would go to his house every other weekend, I actually got closer to him and talked to him more. And if my parents hadn’t divorced, I wouldn’t have found Jesus.
Imagine this is such a story but this actually happened to a real girl it’s kind of heartbreaking to see that this is a real story and its a cartoon version to named saly instead of sara :(
The original film adaptation of this book, with Shirley Temple, was outstanding. This is a good iteration also, but the original movie had so much heart.
I liked the second version best, the one that was made like a serie in 1986. The only one that was true to the book and that her father died from jungle fever. In this they changed the the father to not beeing dead, London has become New york, Becky has become a child instead of a teenager and is black. Also she became like her sister instead of her servant. Also the book was written in 1905, not 1944. I like the series best, becouse it's a little more true to the book and since it's a serie it last around 2,5 hours and have room for more scenes, and doesn't have to be cut short.
This is not accurate with the book. There is no mention of the farthers friend who invested in diamond mines. The police are not in the book and sarah doesn't escape from one roof to the next. There are much better versions.
All these years later and this film still breaks my heart. Thank you for reminding me of this part of my childhood!
I literally gasped out loud when I saw that you did this. Such an underrated classic, especially for girls of a certain age range. Such a beautiful movie.
I still can't watch this without crying at least twice. Such an incredible movie
the musical instrument Minchin was playing was a harp, not a cello.
this movie + a secret garden were my childhood!! i adored this movie so much growing up. it was my go-to to watch when i was at home sick from school lol
I associate the two movies too, what’s the connection? Same studio? Same author at least

They are both movies based off of books written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The two movies could also be bought as a set

Also, in case you didn’t notice, the father is the same actor who plays Davis Seaworth the Onion Knight from Game of Thrones.
Ser Davos????
literally NEVER knew this until reading this.
@@AdamfromFWCISer Davos the Onion Knight was Sara’s father.

Another movie based off a book set in a similar time frame is “The Secret Garden” I always preferred that one to this one.

Here is a pretty cool fact about the cast, Liam Cunningham, Sara’s father was also Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones.
Childhood favourite, my dad died when I was a kid so this has always hit home and still makes me cry

Great review on one of my favorite movies 🩷 Your commentary was hilarious 😂 ‼️
Its always a relief to see this comment on this movie lol.
The book/ film is set during WWI. So around 1919. Not the 40’s.
Prob one of my all time fav films!
The girl that plays Ermengharde, also was in Blind Melon's No Rain video

The Book has so much more in it. Read it many times as a teen in tbe 70's.
I saw this a long time ago with my mother and sister
I thought it was a fever dream since I'd never heard of this since
Wow what a trip

So I was never a girlly girl but I was given this movie by my grandmother and i ended up liking it , still one of my favorite movies today.
I'm 100% tomboy and this will forever be a favorite of mine
You should watch "Secret Garden", it's from the same author that wrote this one 🙂 I prefer Secret Garden personally

i relate in some ways , my dad loves me i wish him long life he just reached 60
I remember getting this movie for Christmas in VHS and it came with a locket.😊
becky is played by Vanessa Lee Chester; she was Jeff Goldblum's daughter in Jurassic park two
Sir Davos from GOT. He's also the Blue Guy in this. Miss Minchin was playing the Harp

18:42 That, Sir, is a harp. So, if that sounded like cello-playing to you, it was certainly bad harp-playing! 🎻
