    this is hands down my favorite adaptation of Cinderella. "They lived" is such a wonderful last line. That their story was more than just a mythical happily ever after fairy tale, but rather that they were "real" people who lived a "real" life together.

      _"And while Cinderella and her prince did live happily ever after, the point, gentlemen, is that they lived."_

      Also earlier in the movie Da Vinci said that a life without love is no life at all. So you could also interpret it as them having found love and living a true and fulfilled life.

    The brothers Grimm didn't actually invent stories, they collected them in their travels. SO in the world of this film, they have heard (and written down) the tale of Cinderella and she just "corrected" their tale 🙂 And when she says "they lived" it's more just saying that they were actually real people and it wasn't just a legend

    • @kriscynical
      @kriscynical ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've always taken the _"the point, gentlemen, is that they lived"_ to mean not only that, but also just the concept of living life to its fullest.

    The scene with the dye is symbolic in a way. The color purple/violet was seen as a royal color. For them, thats as close to royalty they will ever get.

    "The point, gentlemen, is that they lived." Is in regards to how at the film's opening, the men stated no one really knew the truth about "The Little Cinder Girl"s origin. So the ending is her saying "Yes they got their fairy tale ending, but the point is they were real."

  • @babymac1379
    @babymac1379 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    In this movie, the dad had a heart attack; you can see him grabbing his left arm as he started his ride.
    The step-mother was definitely just using that curly haired dude, she wasn't actually interested in him. She wanted him to give them information to help Marguerite get closer to the prince to increase her chance of being the one to marry him.
    Yes, Da Vinci is the "real life" representation of the animated fairy godmother.
    "Serves me right for choosing a foreigner over your sister" but Danielle is her (step)sister; they just assumed "sister" meant Marguerite.
    This is my absolute favorite Cinderella movie, I'm glad you posted this!

    “The point gentleman is that they LIVED…” means “the point gentleman is that they WERE REAL PEOPLE”.
    The core of the story is the idea that this simple fairytale which could only exist in fiction is in fact a tale as old and real as time itself.
    There’s a reason why it’s resonated with people for centuries and that’s not just because it’s a wish fulfilment romantic fantasy, but because the original tale’s plot, its hero challenges, the adversity she is faced with, the courage and hope she has to have to survive - they are all rooted in truths of how many people lived and struggled throughout human history, and in some cases still to this day.
    “The point gentleman is that they lived…” in my opinion is intended to be a line which gives hope to the viewer watching. The concept that even if you only know the Cinderella myth as a fairytale… the truth is that the story came from a true story… that these people “lived”… they faced these incredible challenges… and yet they overcame them… even if you normally associated these ideas of a happy ending with a fictional fairytale… even if it is therefore seemingly a childish dream that you’ll find your happy ending… the truth is that it happened for these people… these happy endings can be real… these people have existed in our human history, they truly have “lived”… so if they can find their happiness so can anyone watching and hoping for their own happy ending today…

  • @lynnshulman
    @lynnshulman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like the ending where she said the point is that they lived, then if you really look, you see the same castle where Danielle went to release Maurice from the wagon, that area now modernized with homes. I have never heard anyone that reacted to this movie see that part.

    If you want yet another Cinderella experience, the Wonderful World of Disney's adaptation of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical with Brandy and Whitney Houston is a charming and fun watch. It also has Whoopi Goldberg and Jason Alexander.
    The casting also has zero rhyme or reason (ie the king is white, the queen is black, and their son is Asian, etc) which makes it that much more whimsical, imo. Very storybook-esque! 😄

I also like how this story has one of the stepsisters get a redemption arc and have her be kinder to Danielle. I also just love the character of Danielle so much too, there is just so much about this movie I love.

  • @kathleenmayhorne3183
    @kathleenmayhorne3183 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Danielle was the daughter of the house, denied her rights by her stepmother. She was no hired servant, she was there, so was taken advantage of, for her keep, not paid at all. The french court, was full of intrigue, so the baroness did what she did, to gain a living, without working for it.
    Have you any idea what a dye vat was full of, back then? The liquid contents of chamber pots were used to set natural dyes.

    The one thing that this version of Cinderalla does the best is the relationship btwn Danielle and Henry. It's one of the only classic fairytale movies where Cinderella and the Prince being in love and getting married by the end actually makes sense b/c the characters build a relationship that, while it's very new, clearly has the potential to keep growing into a lasting partnership. And sometimes when you know, you just know.

I am really glad you enjoyed it ☺ The other two Cinderella adaptations I'd recommend are Cinderella with Brandy and Whitney Houston and A Cinderella Story with Hillary Duff. It's a classic story that I can rewatch over and over, but it might get old if you watch them back to back. Enjoy!

    Disney actually made 2 sequels to Cinderella that were straight to VHS and DVD, the 2nd movie is more of a collection of short stories about Cinderella adapting to life in the palace, but the 3rd movie is actually a great story. Cinderella 3, a Twist in Time. You'll probably like the role of the prince in that one quite a bit better, far more character development, and I promise it is honestly a good follow up film with a well written plot.

    And I never really considered the age difference between the nice step sister and the horsemen that she gets with in the end. But in these times I'm certain it wouldn't be too weird if based on what they look like, a 19-year-old girl married a 38 year old man. That's just kind of how it was. Women married young for making babies, and Men would marry when they could support a wife.

    So to answer your question, France and England never “owned” each other, but they had a very close relationship for a few centuries, starting in 1066 with William the Conqueror. That’s why there are so many French-origin words in English (making it rather distinct from other Germanic languages). Anyway, this movie actually takes place in France, they just have English accents to sound fancy, I assume lol. Note that most of their names are all French as well (Auguste, Danielle, Marguerite, Jacqueline, etc). 😁

    The Comtesse de Lancret iwas Danielle's mother, who died when Danielle was a baby or toddler. All of those dresses and headpieces Danielle wears when she sneaks away to meet the Prince belonged to her mother, all of which where left to Danielle as a Diary (back then, such things were important for young women). It sounds like yo sort of missed that point and the fact that Danielle's father was a wealthy Merchant and that was his house, lands, and servants. The last line of the film means that it wasn't just a fairy tale. Cinderella and her Prince actually existed.

    You know it's nasty. I feel like the dad made no preparations for his daughter. Because the baroness ends up being able to treat her like a slave because the whole household runs on her widow's portion. She is due a certain income from his estate which is likely the farm that they run an extended farmlands. Someone else is running the business and she's collecting a profit and that's what they're living on. So her dad left her nothing. He made no special will and testament to her.

    How can you expect it to be a modern nowdays version? Cinderella is an antique fairytale. Of course the setting will be in the past. Yes there are modern versions in the nowdays but they mostly suck and are some cheap teen movies.
    And no, the original story comes from Italy. Charles Perrault and the brothers Grimm took it and made their own versions. The most famous and fairytale-ish one is from Perrault that uses the fairy godmother and the pumpkin carriage unlike Grimms version where the story its more raw and brutal.
