I remember watching this when I was a little girl and it would make me cry every time because my dad was in the army for pretty much all of my childhood. I'm only 20 now! So if you oldsters think that people my age don't absolutely love these old movies, then you'd be wrong because this will never get old for me. 😊❤️❤️

Gen-X here, ditto in the 1970s (on WDRB-41 in Louisville). I remember the ash dumping and Queen Victoria scenes (which is why I'm here).

Similar story here - I'm a 2000s baby and my great grandma grew up in the time period when Shirley Temple was known by everyone as America's Sweetheart, she had a collection of the movies and had me watching them constantly when I was at her house, I loved it.

Considered that those movies are pushing a hundred years, they are exceptionally ahead of their time. Especially when you think of what ST did in the years after her movie career.

Movie tech has come a long way since 1939, but they had full color (I guess 3-strip Technicolor was around 9 years old) and sound (10 years, ish) by then. By those two metrics, we could call The Little Princess a fully modern film, tech-wise. People think of Technicolor in terms of The Wizard of Oz and its garish, pushed color, but the point was you could select your dyes and get any color onscreen that you wanted, at the expense of pouring hundreds of candlepower of light onto the actors, enough to melt makeup and make your actors nearly faint.

Despite some of her own dramas of childhood in the movie picture business adversity Shirley overcame all obstacles and became a legend to movie fans and to future childhood actors that they to can overcome such adversity’s and become successful in Hollywood successes such as jackie cooper and Ron Howard.a brilliant movie that captures the traumas of war and family.

If I had the choice to watch the version from Alfonso Cuaron with Liesel Matthews and this one I would definitely choose the version from Cuaron. It's much more entertaining and touching. Filmmaking is an art and has evolved very far since 1939. A cuddly Shirley Temple can't change this fact. Some old films age well. This one looks very very old and sometimes a bit odd.

Watching in 2024, age 55, remembering seeing it on WDRB-41 in Louisville in the 70s when I was about the same age ST was in the film, Miss Minchin appears, and I'm like, "Yeah, I remember that beyotch." Here for the ash dumping scene and "Queen Victoria". I guess, between this, Tom Brown's School Days, and The Tomorrow People, and Children of the Stones, this was my first impression of what England must be like. I've since been there, and I was more or less right.
Thank you for making this available, I haven't seen this since I was a child, and tears are freely flowing. Greetings from Louisville, Kentucky.

I really didn't find this version of Minchin to be so cruel and cold hearted as the other adaptations. Strict yes, but not as cruel and vain.

I know Lavinia seems like she’s unfairly rude and mean to Sara. But if you actually analyze it it’s not really all her fault. In a way they kind of provoked her. Like for example when her and Jessie were giggling at 7:34 when the girls first met Sara and they said “how do you do” to her and Sara replied “I’m very well Thankyou”, honestly it didn’t seem like they were giggling trying to make fun of her. It seemed like they were giggling in kind of a friendly matter. But miss Menchin misinterpreted and got mad at them telling them “that will do”. Then at 7:56 the comment that the little blonde girl made. Then at breakfast miss menchin just took Lavinias seat away for Sara to sit there. So in a way the others they provoked lavania against Sara
