    I'm not sure this dive into the past is exactly nostalgic for a "better time." I feel like the point was that all of the bullshit from the past is still haunting us. That all of our modern issues and shallowness and political turmoil and whatever are just new adaptations of past problems. Hence the shallow old Hollywood veneer over stories of various types of failure and heartbreak and disaster. I enjoy the album a good deal more than you, but I don't think it's ever going to be my favorite FJM album. Your line about the dustiest antique shop on Main St. had me rolling.

    • @popkornking
      @popkornking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think this is a great interpretation, but it helped me identify an issue with the lyricism of the album. I think it would have been really interesting (and very on brand for FJM) to include more modern motifs to drive home the fact that all these nostalgic stories are in fact taking place in the present, but the absence of these motifs paired with the nostalgic composition removes any temporal contrast and just comes off as a bunch of sentimental songs from the past. I'd say the only song that has anything like this is the "lefty shit" referenced in Buddy's Rendezvous, which demonstrates that the political landscape in question is the one we are currently in.

    • @onedoorfilms
      @onedoorfilms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@popkornking Yeah more modern references would have provided a more interesting counterpoint to the music. I suppose there is the mention of Letterman and Val Kilmer in Batman to reinforce the anachronism of the words and orchestrations, but I could have done with more than just out and out homage on some of the tracks. It's easily a 7 or 8/10 album for me though.

      This is what Pitchfork and other critics have argued, and Tillman might be going in that direction. The problem for me is that the music is, well, boring. If I wanted to analyze old Hollywood love song pastiche, maybe I'd read an essay but I certainly don't want to listen to it. The playability on this album will be like visiting a history museum, not too often for many.

    Completely glossed over the lyrics to “Q4”, it’s a hell of a song concept. No one tells stories through songwriting the way FJM can. Also, I really love the electronic warble effect layered into the verses on “Kiss Me”, it sounds so dreamy, and the way it contrasts with the chorus, which ditches the effect entirely in favor of a clearer, more pure vocal performance, is really quite spectacular. The “kiss me” refrain is already exceedingly gentle and softly-sung, and yet that transition from vocal effect to no vocal effect results in a hook that has an even more ethereal and surreally beautiful sound. It’s almost as if a fog has cleared as the way in which he’s chosen to express his love - a simple “kiss me” - comes into focus. It left a strong impression on me.

    It's okay not to like the sound of the album. But I feel like your lyrical analysis is a bit disingenuous and missing the point. With everything you know about Josh Tillman, do you honestly think he's pining for a bygone era--especially when he references the Nazis multiples times--and not trying to make a deeper statement about the past? For example, in the last lines of "The Next 20th Century" he's definitely NOT romanticizing the past. He's arguing that human oppression/violence/war is cyclical and inescapable ("The wheel is turning from night into day [...] And now things keep getting worse while staying so eerily the same"), and he doesn't want to live through yet another cycle, or century, of this bloodshed and hatred. I know the old-timey sound isn't super vogue, but I think it's kind of brilliant that he's pulling from 1920s-40s music because it's exactly a century ago. It proves his point that things don't really change, and we're going through the same issues all over again as if stuck in time.

      I don't like listening to reviews by cynics (notice I didn't say critics)!
      He fell over the edge from professionalism to snobbery right at the jump - a state most art/literature/movie critics arrive at when they clearly don't dig sentimentality's rational exploration (yes I said rational - emotions have predictable patterns/progression [ex. pain comes before anger, the several stages of grieving, etc.]) whilst heartily (yea one might even say heartlessly) patting himself on the back for rejecting 50% of the common human experience as if this schism were somehow commendable.

    Not really agreeing with that it romanticizes or glorifies the past, I interpreted his ode to the 50’s as a dream and that we may long for that time, but we’re really just instead entering the same century, with a different look but similar sound. FJM isn’t one to really be naive about our past or our present times. It’s not my favorite album of his, but his sound on this one makes sense, especially when the glamour of that era always overshadows the many, many issues that went on during that time. Instead, a lot of us choose to look at it like a dream, when instead history’s just repeating itself. But that’s just my take.

    While I agree with most of the criticism surrounding the music here, I think you totally missed the tone in the lyricism, especially on the closing track. Tillman describes the cyclic nature of history in this track and how humanity never appears to mature in any meaningful ways, hence the line about none of us ever getting to experience "childhood's end". Greed and corruption will forever plague us, and always have. In this way, he breaks down the distinctions between past and future. In doing so, he also breaks down distinctions between the 20th century, the one he is paying honage to, and the "next" one, which is the one we live in now, drawing parallels between the two. He sees the only possibility for escape in fleeting love songs, though these are ultimately of course a distraction, a way to escape and absolve ourselves of enacting any meaningful change. As with most FJM tracks, there are always layers of irony throughout this record that I am surprised you seemed to miss or just didn't consider.

      Very good take, I agree with your interpretation. That being said the subtexts on this record seem to be a bit more subtle than on his previous albums. You have to look for them more. I've missed a lot of what's going on in the songs on my first couple of listens and am still discovering details in the narrations. Not sure if I actually prefer his writing that way (I still think the album is weaker than Honeybear or TIF) but melon's review definitely comes across as quite reductionist and dismissive.

      @@hamlethoe9694 I never claimed to be objectively right about my interpretation, just that Anthony missed something, which he undoubtedly did. Saying FJM thinks the past was better is such a 7th grade, surface-level reading of the lyrics, which completely ignores the context of the song, most of the lyrics, and who FJM is as an artist. It's like saying A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is earnestly suggesting a solution to poverty is eating all the poor people. Sure, you can read it that way, but you are clearly missing the hidden intention that hides below a surface level if that is your take-away. Beyond that, there are just such obvious references to history's cyclicism in the lyrics that saying that "FJM wants to live in the past" makes no sense in the context of the song.

    This is one of those "ignorance is bliss" reviews for me. I just listened to the album and loved it. He's my favorite artist my lifetime; honesty, there's no way I wouldn't love it. But listening to your review and criticisms, I don't necessarily disagree with them. It's just not what I was looking for. I was looking for the beauty, instrumentation, and introspective lyrics that I've come to expect from an artists like FJM. Having to listen to every album in such an objective, critical manner must be draining on you at times...sometimes it's just nice to be an unapologetic fanboy and gobble up whatever creative output is provided. Sorry you didn't like this one; still appreciate all you do, Fantano.

  • @nicholas1892
    @nicholas1892 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    I really enjoyed this album, but I definitely understand why some people wouldn’t like it. I’ll openly admit I’m a bit of an FJM fanboy, but I feel like you’re oversimplifying and disregarding the theme of the album. The vintage style and production obviously exemplifies Josh’s romanticism about old jazz tunes and the time surrounding it, but all of the tracks end up going down this dark road, forcing Josh’s romanticism to confront reality (the dad in Buddy’s Rendezvous giving shitty advice to his hopeful daughter, the protagonist in funny girl getting ignored, the cat’s death truly signifying the end of a relationship, etc.) The final track of this song solidifies this idea by describing strange grotesque scenes about what our future holds (that are still tinged with Josh’s bizarre romanticism). No matter how much Josh returns to his idyllic idea of the past, the true darkness that hides there always reveals itself. I think this whole album is a grand struggle with the idea that, no matter where we look, past, present, or future, there seems to be no escape from the terror of reality. 8/10 I’m biased.

I agree with Kiss Me though, probably the worst FJM song. Not sure what he was thinking with that one. His usually witty lyricism is completely absent from that track. An oddly tedious review of an album that was sonically and conceptually cohesive and well executed in my opinion. The focus on the idea that FJM was romanticizing the specific era from which he pulls the style from feels like grasping at air. The concept as I understood it was a satirical homage to the idea of a bygone era as represented by the 40s style light jazz (in my opinion a clever choice given the oversaturation of work that idealizes this era in the media) - all the while professing a fear of the future, a feeling to which most can relate. It would seem metaphor escapes our dear melon here....

They're incredibly restrained in a way which bugs me on some of the songs. I feel like Anthony’s criticisms are valid, but don’t match the score. I was expecting a 5 or 6 based on what he said. Sure for FJM this isn’t his best work, but comparatively Tillman is still a much better songwriter than others. Also, I feel like the whole bit of it being in the past is more mindless escapism than a glorification/romanticism. Like turning on an old John Wayne western to mindlessly relax in some nostalgia after watching the current news, even though you know how racist Hollywood and John Wayne were back then. It does the job of pulling from similar eras of the past without ever falling into pastiche, and has some heartbreaking songs to boot. "Dead of the Night" is a soft-glow emotional gut punch and "Avatars of Love" it a masterpiece of modern folktronic lounge pop. Elements of Elliott and Sufjan abound, with "Cut" being a great pop single mixing Prefab Sprout and Peter Murphy...Great stuff deserving of high scores...

    I can't let this one go. Buddy's Rendezvous, bro. It's a better-written version of Tom Waits' Martha. Is it overly-sentimental? Maybe, but there are some lines i can definitely relate to. One of the most heart-breaking is "Living for no one cost me way more than it's worth". I can relate to that line more than i care to admit. The way he's able to craft words in the form if conversations astounds me. I write lyrics, and i like some of the stuff I've written, but I could never write a song this fucking good. I guess some people don't have a fatalist personality and they can't relate to some lyrics that really hit home for other people. Even though I never had kids and this is told from the perspective of an older man who missed out on watching his daughter grow up because he was too busy living for himself, I can still relate to him on a couple of levels.
    It's a goddamn beautiful song and it's too bad A-Fan couldn't see that. I love it when FJM says "So you're gonna be a singer? Well I'll be goddamn". It's such a common thing to hear in conversation, but you don't hear it in songs too often. I love it. I give it 1 million stars!!!
