      I love that performance...and the Paris live performance of this song (the one where she is wiping away tears...and she sings about missing a love when she sings this song...and her pianist has a wonderful intro before she starts singing). I think this may have been shortly around the time of her divorce from Lyzel (the muse of this song).
      There is also the House of Blues performance of this song.. where she starts operatic...and laugh in song-notes...and then the song transitions into a disco beat.
      Both live versions are on TH-cam.
      It is amazing how many different ways that she can perform this song live.

    I just stumbled on this reaction video and decided to watch it. When this Jill Scott album came out I was in my late 20s. I had just started dating a woman who would later become one of my best relationships. Jill Scott was fairly unknown to the world at that time. So, we explored her and each other while morphing pass the infancy of adulthood and learning how to proactively better ourselves. Finding our meaning with each other as well as internally. This album was the first soundtrack of our bond and set the stage perfectly for us as we moved parallel through the lows but mostly highs of that experience. When I listen to it today, it is still as powerful and rich as it was back then and is by far my favorite of all of her music.

    This is one of the GREATEST artists of the 2000s....I met Jill Scott unknowingly when I was with my church choir. And while waiting for her to come out I sat next to this captivating woman with the most beautiful smile I've ever seen. While I sat there with her ( pre youtube ) I didn't know what she looked like and I believed she knew that so she didn't want to draw attention to herself. When I told her I cannot wait to hear Jill Scott sing she simply said "Really?? Well, I hope you get to see her." And that was it. Later on, the MC told the crowd that they're about to bring out Jill Scott and of course I was excited.... UNTIL, 👀 I saw that it was the same woman!!!! Ah man 😔 😟 I didn't know, but it was so sweet how she didn't come across as arrogant or entitled.... especially cause she was creating a buzz with her debut album. Such a great moment and the rest was history. She performed this song 🎵 live and it was breath taking.

    I LOVE your enjoyment of this song!!! It's a Neo-soul classic, and has stood the test of time for so long now! Jill Scott (as someone has said in the previous comments) started in spoken word poetry, so her phrasing a lot of times may come from that. As your dad said referencing Stevie Wonder, most singers phrase the words within the breath, not to break it up. But with Ms. Scott pulling from her spoken word roots, it is her way of stylizing a song, Her voice is so warm and inviting, and she pulls you into the music with her story telling ability, and the way she emotes musically. One of my favorite songs❤

    Who remembers when this album came out? I saw Jill Scott Live with Mos Def and Talib Kweli (Blackstar) before anyone knew who she was. She actually stole the show from Blackstar.

    "You love me, you like me, excite me to chorus" her writer's pen is exceptional.
    Also it was written about her husband at the time, Lyzel.

      It’s “incite” instead of “excite” but your point is absolutely correct.

      Can you explain to me what “incite me to chorus” means in a guy covering this song and I don’t want to put it in mine if it means what I think it means 😂

    • @rebeccasamuell77
      @rebeccasamuell77 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@cameronleecarter I always took it to mean he makes her want to sing.

      @gemtwin1277 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Incite is to encourage so it's like he's making her want to sing (the chorus).

      The first 3 mins of that 9 min song are the best part. If it was a single, that would become the radio edit. I think Making You Wait is even better. So Gone is my other fav from that album.

    Jill’s first art form is poetry so it’s awesome to see her bring that to her music. The father listening to the message while the son engages with the baseline.😊

    Jill is a poet which is why her lyrics are so specific & visual, & expressive! That’s also why she breaks the words up in such a creative way! 😩💕 Unreal!
