    According to Wyclef, he just wanted Lauryn to sing the song by herself. She was worried that people wouldn’t know it was a Fugees song and asked Wyclef to do something on the track. This is what he did because he thought anything else (a rap verse for example) would take away from the song.

      I don't think it was about a rap verse, they was beefing at the time wyclef didn't want to do the song but they said it wouldn't be a fugee's without him so that's why only says " one time, two times"

    • @nigginthewoodpile7721

      Dad has very good taste and wisdom. I instantly hated Wyclef's interjections when this song came out and still do. It nearly corrupts the whole song. Rumors suggest he had a power complex and felt he just had to leave his musical mark. Also, he wants to take a traditional Black American love song and add his carribean inflections. Remember, this guy tried to run for president of Haiti.

    Apparently Lauryn didn't want to do this song because she was trying to shake off her history of being a singer in the movie Sister Act 2 & be taken seriously as an emcee. They literally had to force her to do it & it turned out to be their biggest song ever so she started being more comfortable singing & even playing the guitar live on stage (which she jokes about in her Mtv Unplugged performance.

    I commented last time to mention that the song was originally written and performed by folk singer Lori Lieberman, she was inspired after seeing Don McLean in concert.
    It was later covered by Roberta Flack and finally made hugely popular worldwide by the Fugees.
    All three versions are beautiful but I've got to say that Lauryn's vocal hits me in the gut harder than the others .

    • @rochellelove3785
      @rochellelove3785 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Al B Sure did a cover also before the Fugees.

    • @knightxd4
      @knightxd4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rochellelove3785 To be fair, after Lori released her version everyone covered it; Johnny Mathis, Perry Cuomo, Shirley Bassey, Bobby Goldsboro, Vicki Lawrence, Ann Murray, Petula Clark, Engelbert Humperdink, and on and on. It seemed that anyone wanting a good song for their album recorded it and released it. Of those Roberta Flack got the commercial success with it. Lori was screwed out of her writing credit so royalties were problematic. Roberta recorded another version almost 8 years later with Peabo Bryson that got a little play. A few years after that Al B Sure released his version on In Effect Mode and also enjoyed some commercial success. Meanwhile Lori has been so hosed by the industry that she retires and basically distances herself from the song. So the Fugees released their version and everyone 'discovers' this gem of a song...
      Honest question here, why does everyone like this version so much? There is really nothing original in it. The beat is sample from A Tribe Called Quest, none of the vocal ornamentation are new, no new key changes, no new emotives, no new lyrics... honestly Lauren Hill is beautiful as is her voice... but that's kind of it... Maybe I'm just biased. My. Choice versions are Lori's folk version, Roberta's soulful version, and Am B Sure's r&b/ hip hop version. Anyone have any thoughts here? What am I missing?
