In 2018 I lost weight by rowing. In the spring of 2019, I tore 3 ligaments in my left foot needing reconstruction surgery and plates. I gained 40lbs due to my inability to walk. I decided to get a row machine to help with weight loss, strength building, and exercise.
I broke my wrist in September, and got the OK from my doctor to start rowing right after I got my cast off. It feels SO GOOD to be using that arm again! Rowing is helping me build back some muscle.
This is really helpful. I've been struggling with an old shoulder injury (torn rotator cuff, grade 3 separated shoulder, and impinged nerve) and neuropathy for years, and it had felt better with cardio and rowing, but the gym setting wasn't for my socially awkward antisocial self then COVID! Watching this has me feeling motivated to try again with maybe some home equipment. Thank you for sharing.
Right there with you on the L4/5/S1 discectomy and currently going through either a sciatica flareup or piriformis syndrome bout. This is super encouraging for little mods to take after I give myself a week or so off to when it doesn't hurt constantly. Thanks Shane!
This is awesome! I started rowing about 3 years ago after an Achilles injury. I have achilles tendinitis. It never tore but it was and sometimes still is tender and stiff. Rowing allows me to get a great cardio session in. I had trouble with cardio because most cardio requires impact on the feet. Rowing is perfect for me! Thanks for sharing 😊
Long distance trail runner and love spin classes and weight training as cross training. Foot surgery on October 13th 2020. Non-weight bearing for minimum 4-6 weeks. Was on the rowing machine 5 days post surgery with foot on a furniture slider (thought of it before I even saw this video!). Past the pain in the foot 10 days post so now I just plant the heel on the carpet in line with the foot holder on the machine and bend my knee on that side as if it was in the machine (hoping to cross train with lap swimming w/a pool buoy once I can submerge my foot in water for long periods of time). Started back with upper body weights 2 days post and never stopped core (I know how to modify so not been a problem since it's just a foot and not ankle or knee). Not gonna lie, rowing is my least favorite cross training tool but it's literally the ONLY thing I have right now so happy to have found your videos because it's making it more than tolerable and I'm starting to look forward to getting on it 3-4x a week now.
Great Video! I'm a triatlete, recovering from a Tibial Fracture surgery. I'm not able yet to bend entirely my leg. So after that, I'll start the rowing and the half slide will be help a lot!
This is excellent. I don’t have an injury or rehab reason now, but I’ve downloaded this video because someday, I’m sure I will have something that will cause me to need this!
I am so happy I found your video! I am almost 5 weeks post bunion surgery and have been really feeling low due to sitting on the couch! I used to row 6,000M on the Erg 6 days a week! I wish I had seen this sooner. While I dont think I can put full pressure on my right foot yet, I can definitely immobilize the seat as you suggest or use my left leg and put the right on a disc! Thank you so much!!!
Good to see you can do work using one hand as I had an op on my right hand last week and will have to wait for the stitches to come out before I can use my ergo, so one handed rowing will get a try out. Thanks for the video.
Have a herniated C3-C4 cervical disc causing weakness in left side of my body. Two years of almost no excercise. Started rowing 6 months ago, found your videos a couple months ago and they have been great. I keep the damper light and practice tucked chin and external rotation of shoulders. Has helped and I'm alot stronger! Would love to see a video of any of your thoughts on back and neck accessory work to rowing.
So excited to see your post. I have C4,5,6 herniated and it seems like everything thing I do makes it worse. So hard to get into any kind of shape. This was very inspiring and gives me some hope ;)
Thank you so much. My water rower arrived the other day. A friend helped me put it together and I lasted 3 1/2 min, then a 30 second break, and barely finished the 5 min. I wasn't sure what to do. I felt defeated. You see, it started in the year 2014, I have had 21 surgeries. Before that started I used to run, bike, swim and weights. I was 'always' fit until the accident. Not worth talking about it because I have talked about it enough. Surgeries on both my shoulders, elbows, wrist, hands, fingers, ankles, heels oh and for good measure...my appendix had to be removed. Why not... Anyway, all of my muscles have become, what I call, very weak. I know the 'only' way to gain strength and stamina is by working out. You gave me hope. I thought, maybe, what I could do it rather than work out both my hands and legs at the same time. Do them separately. I know it sounds strange but until I start somewhere. You see, what I want to do, once I have gained the strength and stamina is, literally, join a rowing club. Go outdoors. Of course, I have a ways to go but we all have to start somewhere. Thank you so much...I mean it. You just gave me hope...I don't feel defeated anymore.
I injured my shoulder in a motocross crash and will be having surgery next week to repair the torn labrum. Last night I was thinking on how I was going to row with one arm. To my luck, you posted this amazingly helpful video. Thank you for sharing this invaluable info! Hopefully I'll be back on the bike (and erg) stronger than ever by spring time!
I’m recovering from a TBI, neck injury, elbow injury & back injury. My husband is partially paralyzed on his right side with neuropathy. I’m going to ask him to watch this and hope he’s able to get some recovery, strength & relief.
Dealing with scapular dyskinesis and the the tendinitis caused by rowing when my scapula is not moving correctly. PT is allowing 10 minutes of rowing per day now and I’m finding the pick drill workouts to be very helpful. My back tells me clearly when I lose my concentration and allow my shoulders to rise during the drive.
All of this types of injury that you mentioned..First is left knee injury then lower back pain on the right side and also left shoulder injury...!! But I love rowing exercise 😢
Hey Shane... appreciate the subject. Left shoulder arthroscopic surgery last week. Reattached the supraspinatus to the bone. Fun! I have the Aviron Impact rower. The Aviron handle is typically very comfortable, but doesn't have the center handle grip of the Concept 2. Any suggestions? I need to get back in the game!
I use rowing for stroke recovery. After I filmed myself I found out that my involved leg does not stretch completely. I am searching for exercises to strengthen this involved leg. Single leg rowing appears to be difficult due to balance. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I had a knee injury that has taken a 6-month recovery. I started rowing with concept 2, and my knee has healed, but I've developed full-blown costochondritis in the process, so I'm out of commission until I get better. Do you have any videos or recommendations on how to row without developing costochondritis?
If I pulled my calf while training for my first tri, and I don’t have the option to row with one leg, do you think the calf strain is light enough for a light pull to not be re-aggravated?
How would you recommend to row with a hyperlordosis? I personally feel that i have less Back issues when i force myself in a more "crouched" Position in my lower back. Crouched probably meaning more neutral for most people but not for my default posture
I've had a lot of trouble with my back since Covid started - I think my work from home chair isn't great (I've just changed it) and it's been difficult to know whether the back pain is the chair, the rowing machine, a combination, or something else. I try and keep good posture on the machine, but I bend very little at the hips unless I bend my knees at the same time, which makes it difficult to get good posture. I cannot sit on the machine with my legs straight in the 1 o'clock position, for instance, so I normally start bending at the hips before I've finished driving with my legs.
I slipped on the ice in the driveway at work and had a lumbar strain, right hip contusion and a few months later was told I had a SI dysfunction on the right side and with the over compensating I now had a gluteus maxamus strain and a strain in the right thigh. I had PT twice a week for 3 months and other restrictions. I still occasionally get pain in my right hip/lower back and have the pt exercises to do but in the 9 months I wasn't aloud to do anything, I gained alot of weight. I have a total gym but im nervous to use it and I was told to try a rowing machine. I want to start getting back into shape. would a rowing machine help me or should I stay away? If it will help me...which kind do you recommend and how do I start?

This video was so awesome. Thank you. Just had ACL reconstruction and look forward to using my rower to feel human again!

Ankle surgery to repair an ATFL. I'm excited to try rowing while I'm recovering.
Thanks very much. I love the way you motivate people. Keep it up.

Trimaluar fracture in ankle. Still can't go full catch. most I can do is 85 to 90 percent catch, on good days.
Hi DH, I have a broken right ankle 3 places just had surgery a week ago today. How can I train
thoughts on hamstrings strain minor vs. serious?
L5 s1 gone. Blew out L4 l3. Had a microdiscetomy 4 weeks ago. Kinda lost
