The best thing I do is compare love songs, metal love songs are full of emotion, and you can feel the longing, loss, or love in them. Pop love songs can be singing about how they lost someone and now want to die, but it's upbeat, and you can hear it, but not feel it. Metal has *passion* pop doesn't.

Metal is the most relaxing genre to me. Sometimes I am kept awake due to events that happened in my life and while I may not be able to sleep the music gives me some peace of mind. One of my favourite song quotes is actually from a "happy upbeat song" by Outkast: "y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance" because if you actually listen to the lyrics of that song it's quite depressing.
I watched a video couple weeks back on why metal fans are the happiest and kindest music listeners. I think it mainly stated that there is more raw emotion in metal music that allows for easier expression of built up emotions, leading to people being more chill in everyday life. I believe the title was something along the lines of "Why metalheads are happy people".
Yeah we are. It allows us to purge built up emotions through what we enjoy. We don't get added emotions from what we listen to either. Like hey, if you're constantly listening to songs about break ups and how sad you are, that's going to creep into your psyche and effect you. Your thoughts are going to be more negative and you're going to be more negative in general. With Metal we don't get that added negativity. We get to understand something from a different perspective in a unique way. Take Run to the Hills. That's an amazing track, but if you listen to it the message is far clearer and more impactful than if it was done in a pop variety. Just try to imagine if that message as done in a pop song. It wouldn't work and would be horrible. It'd probably have the opposite effect. Another thing is with suicide and mental health. A lot of songs lately center around it. And that is fantastic. As a mental health worker, talking about suicide doesn't increase the chances of someone completing it. It just opens a discussion about it. It also adds to the fact that a huge amount of the population have a mental health condition. Something that really hasn't been acknowledged until the recent years. Just by it being normalized in music can help thousands of people who wouldn't acknowledge or even think about it. Even if they don't seek counseling just hearing a song about things can get better can change their lives. At the bare minimum that's far better than them dwelling in Country Music.
I've always looked at it like this; emotions can be exercised just like muscles, same as learning new things. First time you try new things, usually ya fuck it up. You don't know how yet. First time you feel things? They usually fuck you up, you haven't learned them yet. Metal often gave me practice in experiencing anger and sorrow. Those emotions don't run me very often anymore. I still feel them every day, but I've got practice dealing with them so I know how to better manage them. Thanks, metal, for helping me figure out how to still be kind even when you're amongst the low and empty.
It's actually the best when upbeat music has the cheerful sound to it and the lyrics are just horrifying Really shows what suffering even while smiling feels like

I love BloodRed HourGlass for exactly this reason SOO many of their songs are uplifting and even make me emotional because they're so touching, especially in their Godsend album. Some song examples: Alysia, Drag me the Rain, The End We Start From, In Lieu of Flowers, The Sun Still In Me. All these are bangers that tell a story of love
I might actually be able to explain this: There’s 2 types of people who listen to music as I’ve noticed, people who listen to the words in the music, and people who don’t. People who don’t they tend to just like the beats and not care about the words. People who do tend to want to listen to music with words that mean something to them
Woa! Just like people that prefer to have a great story and don´t care much about graphics vs people who prefer great graphics and don´t care much about story.
I've heard Metal called many things, but never in my life have I heard it called "depressing". Now some Punk and most Emo rock is definitely depressing.
Have you ever heard Pelican or Isis? Those bands are great and are actually sometimes very depressive. The Woods or The Cliff by Pelican would be great examples
@@marikiri5119Another one for the list would be "Woods of Ypress". It's more of a Doom band with some atmospheric shoegazy elements to it. Their singer has unfortunately passed away. Absolute trigger warning with their music though. Depressing as fuck.
Metal can get very depressing, it depends on the sub-genres. Some Metalcore, Hardcore and Post-hardcore (Metal) bands make very depressing and intensive songs... Also the "Alternative" metal scene produces sometimes depressing music (Nu Metal being the most obvious example)...
I fucking hate emo rock and nu metal but punk is good if it’s actual punk like dead kennedys or something not like green day that claim they are punk for some reason
When I want to write a proposal at work I put my headphones on and I can only concentrate with metal and grunge ! And this is exactly the reaction I always get from colleagues! But the drum beats are so solid that works like magic!
Tbf, many SOAD songs are depressing but not in the same way most pop songs are. SOAD songs are always lamenting about a real situation that we seem to have no power to change, like corporations destroying the environment or the cruelty of war, or real historical events like the Armenian genocide, as Serj is Armenian. The only one I can think is randomly depressing is chop suey, that I think in the surface was about a party gone completely wrong. I should look up for any deeper meaning later tho.
I find really heavy stuff relaxing. I really get in to classical when it plays, hyper-focussing on every notes, that the music that I can't discern (like deathcore) I just finally listen to calmly without over-analysing it.
Most of my “get me feeling good about Life” music is metal. Have you listened to most modern rap lyrics? My son listens to rap and it makes me want to “off” myself. 😐
Echoing the “metal is energetic, not depressing” sentiment. People tell me “How do you listen to that, it’s so angry!” When I’m over here listening to it because I find it exhilarating! I feel it more like an intense amusement park thrill ride and less like a place to vent negative emotions, though that happens sometimes too. And I listen primarily to electronic/dance music, which is often very upbeat lol. I find great energy from both genres!
Most of the Metal lyrics is actually quite depressing or at least sinister / angry But even the instrumental sound alone can also create very emotional and depressing feelings too. Melodic guitar riffs can sound very emotional and melancholy or even depressing if played in a certain tune, key and melody 🎸🎵🎶 Especially if you add some other instruments like piano🎹, violins and chello 🎻🎶🎵 It can get very depressing (for example Symphonic Metal) Or Hardcore Metal (Metalcore), Post-hardcore and Deathcore (the name already says it) can get extremely depressive and intensive But also *Ambient Metalcore (Atmospheric Metalcore)* can get very emotional too And even the less extreme Metal genres like Alternative Metal and Nu-Metal or Progressive Metal can sound very emotional and depressing too...
“I’m surrounded by people who listen to the most popular hits in songs, and I seem to be the only one noticing the meaning behind it. Not only that, but I’m not blinded by the instrumental; I listen to every clear lyric. California Girls by Katy Perry is a prime example. Everyone just dances around and sings along, meanwhile I sit in the corner in silent disapproval.”
I was listening to your music in my room when my mum came in, told me to turn it off and started mimicking a trex while roaring saying she was making better music. I wish people understood metal
No one told me you can't dance to metal music. I guess I did it wrong last night then 😵. There were couple of great metal bands playing and I racked up 11k steps 💃. I did do a little bit of moshing and threw some horns in the air too, so maybe I'm forgiven 🫣.

Omg i love the guitar after the "lead life with love and you'll never be alone" empathy the gift is probably my favorite song from you guys
Rock, metal, and all their sub genres make me feel an overload of serotonin , never depressed🤍
How is raw, unbridled energy depressing? Has anyone ever looked at a mosh pit and thought "look at all those depressed people hating life"?
Exactly! Like, a whole gang of different sweaty guys are rubbing and hugging each other while listening some good music)) Jokes aside - the best community ever.
@@Satan_za_vsem_sleditspeaking about the people: I was so excited on my first mosh to find out there's an unspoken rule of picking up those who fell on the floor. Truly humane community
Yeah, exactly! There’s so much energy and connection, it’s beautiful. 🤘🏻❤️
As someone who likes dance music with sad lyrics, the ending is spot on
This is why I love Tenacious D ❤ "I DO NOT NEED...A MICROPHONE...MY VOICE IS FUCCCCCCIN...POWERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!"
your music has such a unique sound to it, the vocals are perfect, the riffs are heavy... its just perfect!
I was a little caught off guard by that "step mom threw me out of the house again" bit, too.
Ive had numerous ppl make fun of metal saying stuff like , kill kill kill, death mame and dismember...lol
Then id play some harebreed or killswitch and let them read the positive lyrics about bettering yourself and being kind to others ..
It really changed thier viewpoints
Ive never heard anyone call metal depressing. I have heard plenty of complaints about not being able to hear what the vocalist is saying however
This 100%. I'm getting the vibe that those type of videos are fueled by one single whack commenter on reddit/twitter lol
Like, they put out soo much videos on ''am I metal enough'' or ''I listen to metal, but can I listen to this?'' I legit have never heard anybody say those kind of things
I've seen a fair share of elitists online, actually. But a lot of it is stuff like "That band isn't metal" etc
“Hell, fire, ouchies”
Def not the exact quote but another fire bar from different vid❤
Metal: Embracing the inner demons and conquering them.
Upbeat music: Embracing nothing and playing happy sounds to lie to yourself and pretend ur ok.
Bro I've never heard anything more real
I might actually be able to explain this:
There’s 2 types of people who listen to music as I’ve noticed, people who listen to the words in the music, and people who don’t. People who don’t they tend to just like the beats and not care about the words. People who do tend to want to listen to music with words that
mean something to them
Funny thing I noticed is how so many of the people who don't actually listen to the words won't consider instrumental music as music ... Ironic
Woa! Just like people that prefer to have a great story and don´t care much about graphics vs people who prefer great graphics and don´t care much about story.
'Weight of the False Self' by Hatebreed is one of the most positive, uplifting, and motivational songs I've ever heard.
Most of hatebreed is either pushing you to be your better self or pushing us to do better as a society.
One of the best bands ever
My roommate says they've never heard the band before and hates the singer's voice but I think they're great for pushing us to be better.
Hatebreed has a funny name for their lyrical content xD
And "as I lay dying" songs are about self fortitude, coping with failures and rising back up strong 😂
P.s. Next time I hear nirvana or linkin park or green day on the radio I’m throwing it out of the window
"All the other kids with the pumped up kicks"
Metal always has so much energy and emotion to it. Literally have songs for every mood
I'm more depressed than metal music is, so I'm happy listening to it
Same
"I'm gonna listen to some UPBEAT music y'know?"
then blue monday starts playing
Hey, at least he didn't start with "turn that shit off"
But, imo, it’s metal if you hear that.
@@tompatchak8706fr 😂
When I want to write a proposal at work I put my headphones on and I can only concentrate with metal and grunge ! And this is exactly the reaction I always get from colleagues! But the drum beats are so solid that works like magic!
Why did I immediately think of Gojira's super spiritual and humanist lyrics 😂
Metal: Lyrics about moral issues
Mainstream "music": mah ass, mah pussy, mah money, mah guns, mah satan, mah blood sacrifice

What’s the name of the song, shit slaps. The metal song.
Empathy, The Gift 💚
Please.. stop.. why.. do.. i.. see.. you.. everywhere..?
That sounded pretty positive to me
That solo sounded like it was about to be some fire
I find really heavy stuff relaxing. I really get in to classical when it plays, hyper-focussing on every notes, that the music that I can't discern (like deathcore) I just finally listen to calmly without over-analysing it.
Most of my “get me feeling good about Life” music is metal. Have you listened to most modern rap lyrics? My son listens to rap and it makes me want to “off” myself. 😐
Most rap music isn't my thing either, but NF is actually a really good rapper. His lyrics are meaningful and relatable.
@@lar_4812 I actually really like NF. Don’t consider him rap. He’s really something else. Just don’t know what to call it. 😂🤘
@waterhorse5199 Well, he is technically rapping, but you're right it's very different from other rappers.
Gangsta rap is about "offing" other black people!
Yes, because hearing *"SOOISIDAL"* instead of positive messages is not depressing.
Meanwhile I always searching depressing music, it's give feels "I'm not the only one"
I sometimes feel a sleep when I'm listening to your music and I love you guys❤❤
We love you too ❤️
It’s only depressing if it’s lyrical content is depressing
Most of the Metal lyrics is actually quite depressing or at least sinister / angry
But even the instrumental sound alone can also create very emotional and depressing feelings too.
Melodic guitar riffs can sound very emotional and melancholy or even depressing if played in a certain tune, key and melody 🎸🎵🎶
Especially if you add some other instruments like piano🎹, violins and chello 🎻🎶🎵 It can get very depressing (for example Symphonic Metal)
Or Hardcore Metal (Metalcore), Post-hardcore and Deathcore (the name already says it) can get extremely depressive and intensive
But also *Ambient Metalcore (Atmospheric Metalcore)* can get very emotional too
And even the less extreme Metal genres like Alternative Metal and Nu-Metal or Progressive Metal can sound very emotional and depressing too...
@@alternativerockemo6783 yeah I get you but the lyrical content plays a big part is some music
What’s depressing is hearing music with a phone speaker
😂😂😂
What do you expect me to do when I’m listening to Tool at 2am
@@masonm2140 headphones 😭
@@1Guug I know but Nuh uh
It’s kind of funny because I always listen to music from the phone speaker.
Perfectly described my mom
“I’m surrounded by people who listen to the most popular hits in songs, and I seem to be the only one noticing the meaning behind it. Not only that, but I’m not blinded by the instrumental; I listen to every clear lyric. California Girls by Katy Perry is a prime example. Everyone just dances around and sings along, meanwhile I sit in the corner in silent disapproval.”
"YOU'RE A TRUE GIFT! THE THE PEOPLE IN YOUR *growls* LIIIIIIIIFEEEEE!"
*Starts playing pumped up kicks*
I was listening to your music in my room when my mum came in, told me to turn it off and started mimicking a trex while roaring saying she was making better music. I wish people understood metal
"..diddn't hear anj thinh resszemmblinh mettal inn thiss."
No one told me you can't dance to metal music. I guess I did it wrong last night then 😵. There were couple of great metal bands playing and I racked up 11k steps 💃. I did do a little bit of moshing and threw some horns in the air too, so maybe I'm forgiven 🫣.
We had a guy in our PG who smoked and then listen to metal all the time alone in his room, we used to knock in his door and create havoc in his room and he was really cool with it, really interesting guy
Yeah, most people don't pay attention to the actual lyrics
Case in point, there are people who still think Pumped Up Kicks is a happy and innocent song
This is the absolute best way to ADVERTISE your own art 😩😂💯
This is soooo accurate lmao. I mean, there definitely is metal with depressing lyrics, but it’s hilarious how many songs have positive messages disguised behind the screaming.
Yo that Noma fermentation book is what’s up!!!!
It's like screaming in the streets "YOU BETTER BE HAPPYYYY !!! 👩🏻🎤"
AHHH I LOVE YALL’S MUSICC 🔥🔥❤❤
