If you'd paid $20 extra, the pilot probably would have let you fly the plane while he listened to his phone.

@@olgaflores522 I wouldn't say "never." I've flown on Cessna 208's like the one in this video before on Southern Airways Express here in the US, and similarly sized Pilatus PC-12's with Boutique Air, and they have always flown with a copilot. Really depends on the airline and the location.

I have the opposite view. That being a pilot, one would be less afraid as a passanger on a small plane. Veering off course for a couple of minutes is really not much of an issue. I'm only surprised about the lack of pilot's headset. Could he have had another pod in his left ear that he could hear radio communications through? It's difficult enough to hear with a great headset.

We would drive down from Los Angeles, park on the US side, take a taxi to downtown in a beat up ex-US taxi which in turn was an ex-US police car with a bad alignment and suspension. This flight reminded me of that, but in an airplane. But, vehicles aside, I never had trouble in Tijuana in all the years and times (dozens and dozens) I had been. As far as trouble being the plane--yes he found trouble and trouble found him, no doubt!

The plane overran the runway in Cabo San Lucas airport but there was no damage. An airplane's age is not important because every year and every 2000 hours most of the components are replaced with new parts. What really matters in aviation is good maintenance.

I am an instructor... that guy did a whole bunch of stuff that would probably cause him to lose his certs if he was flying in the US. The one thing I'll say in his defense is that I don't know what the rules are in Mexico or that airline's op specs and I suppose it's possible that the flights you took were actually VFR, meaning his course and altitudes might not have mattered that much outside of maintaining terrain clearance and traffic separation. But using his phone while hand flying, filling out paperwork, no hands on the controls as he's on his takeoff roll, I mean lots of stuff looked pretty crazy to me. It's no surprise to me that this plane's been in a runway excursion with this airline.

This airline is a small, regional carrier that serves more like an air-taxi service for small, isolated towns in northwestern Mexico and the sparsely populated Baja California Peninsula. It’s something similar to what you would find in terms of commercial air services in far-northern Canada or Alaska, where such planes and and services are similar. Most people in Mexico haven’t heard about this airline except for the locals in those towns. I was in Tijuana a few days ago and looked into flying from there to Guerrero Negro and La Paz, there are flights offered by this airline and Aerocalafia but most people I spoke to in Tijuana didn’t know this nor had heard about those airlines! Thank you for showing us your experience.
