- I took a crazy flight across Central Asia with Uzbekistan Airways, but almost didn't end up going anywhere at all.

Frankly there are enough other channels which may show Emirates, Turkish, Lufthansa, Virgin…… but what is great about your channel is the diversity of location, airline, airline type, airport and even hotel…..and food at airport
Yup, Lufthansa etc are just get on, pretty comfy, bit of a snack, get off. Goes pretty much to time. Nothing falls off the wings, no seat cushions fall off.
“I’m not being trafficked” is exactly what someone who was getting trafficked would say……😂😂
I don't think so. Most cases of human trafficking don't involve kidnapping or violence, or at least not at that stage; people usually don't know what's happening until they reach their destination. Usually they're naïve poor people with little schooling and even less information about the outside world who are lured with false promises of well-paid jobs or a happy marriage to someone rich. So, a real case of human trafficking would most likely have a very happy and excited person at that point, thinking they're on their way to a better life.

It’s good to hear they’re actively looking for possible trafficking victims, even if it’s a mild inconvenience for some if it’s all above board
Somehow I wouldn't suspect a middle-age white man who is 6'4" is a victim of trafficking.

Fun fact: back in the 1970s, when Uzbekistan was one of the Soviet republics, it was basically off-limits to Westerners, but there was an exception. Finland was a neutral country with good relations and some privileges in the USSR due to the terms of their peace treaty after WWII (or more precisely, a simultaneous but separate independence war in Finland at the time). That included using some parts of the Soviet airspace that were otherwise forbidden to foreign airlines, and even using some Soviet airports. So, Finnair flew from Helsinki-Vantaa to Bangkok-Don Mueang on the DC-8-62 with a refueling stop in Tashkent. Passengers were not allowed to leave the plane in Tashkent, but it still must have felt like an adventure in a forbidden place at the time, and it was the shortest flight from Europe to Southeast Asia, as all others had to take a long detour with further stops through the Middle East and India.

@@retroworld1488, it wasn't just Uzbekistan, it was most of the Soviet Union. Nobel prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman spent years trying to get an authorization from the Soviet authorities to visit the Tuva Autonomous Republic of Russia (he just somehow decided he wanted to go there... of course, you can't be a normal person if you're worth a Nobel...), and he died without getting it (his daughter finally went there after the fall of the USSR). There's even a book about his attempts, "Tuva or Bust!" Not even ordinary Soviet people had much freedom to travel inside their own country: there were internal passports, permits, and the like.
However, pretty much nobody in the West, other than those very keen on maps and such, had even heard of Uzbekistan, Tuva, and other such places at that time. They had heard of Moscow, St. Petersburg (then called Leningrad), maybe Kiev, and that was all. That was also all a Westerner was allowed to visit, and even then only after a lot of red tape to get a visa, compulsorily using the official Soviet travel agency, staying at designated hotels, etc.
Wow that’s crazy! Could just imagine those times. And now the country has a whole airline that’s open to the world operating 767 and even the Dreamliner! Incredible.
@@retroworld1488, and Uzbekistan is on my bucket list of places to go. Not the capital city, Tashkent, which is okay but "meh" by all accounts, but rather Samarkand and Bukhara, true gems from the Silk Road times and the Tamerlane empire with magnificent art and architecture that are very well preserved. In Nonstop Dan's personal travel vlog channel, Oskar and Dan, they had recently a series about their visit to Uzbekistan and they absolutely LOVED the country. And it's a relatively cheap place, too, compared to better known destinations.
@@goytabr Oh yes it’s a very beautiful country. Truly a hidden gem! I would go for it! Although I haven’t been, I’ve heard stories of people who have visited and all positive experiences that you won’t get anywhere else in the world and the very affordable prices are just more of the reasons to visit. I believe Uzbekistan Airways flies direct to New York surprisingly, but not frequent annually.

Great video as always! I was a military contractor in Afghanistan/Uzbekistan in 2004 and we flew thru Tashkent down to Karshi-Khanabad via Uzbek air then miilitary air into Afghanistan. The experience on Uzbek air's old AN-24 from Tashkent to Karshi was an eye opener for some folks, with balding main gear tires, leaky engine cowlings, and the glorious wallpaper and leopard print seat covers. I also enjoyed their slogan "Good Luck" very befitting their airline. Glad to see they haven't lost their charm!
Wow early days! I didn't get to Bagram until 2011 and everything was through Kuwait. I only just missed transiting through Manas AB Kyrgyzstan. In my four trips back & forth to AFG I've been through Dubai, Kuwait, and even deported from Qatar.

@@crowonthepowerlines what are you talking about? Uzbekistan has climbed seven lines in the Global Peace Index 2022. According to the rating, in 2022 Uzbekistan ranked 86th out of 163 countries. Last year, the country was in 93rd place.

Really great flight with warm and friendly crew members, and what an experience coming from a fairly outdated, but nostalgic 767, suddenly to a shiny new 787!

I can highly recommend all 3 locations, I’ve been to all of them and they are wonderful.
Is crazy in your circumstances, however, full credit to the authorities for being mindful of such issues and looking out for your best interests.

The USA is dropping most mask mandates everywhere because health experts have determined that they are useless and harmful to children by causing learning disabilities and speech problems. In 6 months I have worn a mask twice, once at the doctor's office and once in a large store.

The new airport in Istanbul looks really amazing. No comparison to the old Atatürk. Used to travel to Tel Aviv via Istanbul a lot before Corona and can’t wait to see the new airport soon.

This brought back memories of flying Uzbek Airways in an Ilyushin (I think) between Tashkent and Samarkand in bad weather. Bad enough, but not as scary as doing the reverse journey by road in an old Mercedes 600 with a mad driver. This was followed by an Iran Air flight to Tehran (an early Airbus). The equipment wasn't great but I had the strong impression that the Uzbek and Iranian pilots were bloody good flyers

i actually hope Uzbekistan airways see your video Noel. That food (Chicken) you consumed looked dryer than the Sahara desert. It doesn't look up to standards that. You can get better quality in a £1 microwave meal from Iceland supermarket LMAO.

I remember ANA did that single middle seat in business class from Tokyo to the US. I rode it once and it was like being on display.
I remember Noel's flight on Boliviana de Aviación (BoA), from Madrid to Cochabamba, Bolivia, also on a 767 and in business class. BoA also has that single middle seat, but I think Noel didn't sit on one of them.
Thank you Noel for showing us that Uzbekistan airways is a good airline and that i need to pack a lunch or breakfast if ever flying them!

I live in Vancouver, every Sunday morning when I wake up to go to work , I get my noel fix with my morning coffee ☕️
I went through Tashkent airport about 20 years ago, and believe me when I say that it has improved a 1000%. Back then there was a massive hall for transfers, but the bar and duty free were about the size of a bus shelter. Arrival and departure were horrendous, trying to get a full plane load into an area about the same size as my living room. Have to admit though, the Uzbeks were very friendly
I did too, about 20 years ago. LHR - Tashkent - BKK, in a 767. The terminal was an old soviet era building, one tiny kiosk open, wouldn't take any currency but local, and there was no where to change it anyway. 2 a.m. There were armed guards at departure who were very unfriendly and relieved a lot of the passengers of their duty free alcohol bought in London. No one argued with them, and everyone was glad to get the hell out of there. Never again. It looks like they've built a new terminal and upgraded their fleet. Still wouldn't go that way again.

I flew London to Tashkent, then back home to London with Uzbek airlines back in 1995 ish for work. Was horrific. When the plane touched down in Heathrow there was rapturous applause throughout the plane. Never been so pleased to land.
Noel is so much more down to earth then all those other pretentious reviewers *cough* Trek Trendy *cough*

Hi Noel, great video. One of the greatest pleasures flying with different airways is what they serve for food, I remember flying with Air China back in the 1990's from HKG to LHR and we got served a Chinese meal including a great big block of raw fish - I tried a bit and found it rather chewy and bony, hmm tasty I hear you say. On another flight with good old UTA back in the 1980's from Tahiti to LAX we had a sumptuous meal which almost never ended.

Last time i flew uzbek air it was more like a military transport. But the people of uzbekistan are lovely and its one of my favorite places

Biz Class has improved since 2015! Used to economy seats with the middle seat blocked. Staff is always super. Food is variable. The price and short distance to Dubai is a winner!
One could say there was a "Loo Review Number Two" - but people might get the wrong idea.
Yes. The staff on the plane is generally very kind and helpful. Food is basic. Toilets, in my experience, were a bit dumpy - looks like things have improved! They never used to have TV on the back of the chairs or little gift bags.
He was flying "Business Class".

Oh wow! I lived in UZ from 2013-2015 and NEVER saw a business class on UZAIR like that! Very cool!
I was in Toshkent airport in 2017, I was there a few hours early for check-in and as the time approached they turned the lights on inside (after a month in Central Asia I thought the dim airport lighting was normal). It gets better, on the plane from Toshkent to KL there was a man smoking in the loos. First time I had encountered that on a flight.
It's maddening how you always speed up the interesting bit of city views at take off!

Great Video as always Noel, this brings back memories of when I was a child I used to fly from BHX to ATQ Via Tashkent. I remember the planes had no IFE and were so basic! The airport was literally just a big house so its good to see things are slowly improving!

Hey Noel! For the Loo Review, a black light would go a long way in helping you ascertain the cleanliness of the loo. I carry mine in my backpack along with multiple cleaning products designed to sterilize airport surfaces. Those germs are going to have a tough time infecting me! 😉

My Daughter lives in Uzbekistan about an hour outside the capital her biggest complaint is the food. It’s not just the food on the planes it’s everywhere.
Nice VDO, Noel, of Uzbekistan Airlines and the fantastic new Istanbul Airport. Yes, trafficking is a modern problem and glad that you did not disappear forever into Uzbekistan, otherwise we would not be able to watch any more of your VLOGS ! 🤣🤣 I got a PCR Test in Istanbul (NOT at the airport though) for 170 YTL (less than £10 !) which just goes to show what rip off prices are charged in the UK for these tests, that hopefully will soon no longer be required for travel 🤞🤞 Love watching these VDOs of the more obscure airlines. 3:17 Noel, you have some BIG balls, my friend !!!! I would never make a comment like that at an airport. Not mention 'bomb' or 'gun' or anything like that. The age-old joke of saying hello to a guy called Jack, then getting arrested because they shouted, 'Hi Jack!' at an airport comes to mind.
I have a small dog that sometimes travels with me as a pet. His name is Jack, and on more than one occasion, a flight attendant has said "Hi, Jack!" without realizing what they were saying. This is a true story.

Both planes were actually pretty nice; 767 for a short flight, it was a great plane when it came out, and Dreamliner for the longer haul, makes sense to me. The airport in Istanbul blew my mind, have to go there. The food, well that was the low point of the trip. Too bad because there are so many good easily done meals that don't cost any more than what they served. Some of the airlines should hire better people to buy their food, I don't blame the caterer. All in all I would fly with this airline. Great report Noel.
Yes, when I arrived from Dubai, the security staff were very friendly and were fascinated that I had come from Australia. They taught me three words in Uzbek to start me on my journey. Noel, if you think the terminal where you were was grim, you should go back and experience the domestic terminal on the other side of the airport! I flew from Tashkent to Bukhara - have a look at that for an airport!

I've only been on a 767 once, and that was with Air Zimbabwe from Gatwick to Harare way back in October 1991. Very comfortable I thought, and the Air Zin Crew were excellent. (Back then anyway).
They kept me well lubricated...! And of course we could all smoke back then, which I partook excessively as flying isn't my favourite thing to do!
Strange, love aircraft but hate flying. So I just watch other people do it for me...lol.

Your experience was more plush than when I took an Uzbekistan Airways Tupolev TU-154 (3 engines), which even the inflight magazine described as outdated!
I flew on UZB 767 about 6 years ago into Tashkent. The flight attendants were grumpy and I was scorned for taking photos out of my window. No photography allowed she rounded her eyes on me.i couldn't recall what I had but it was disgusting that they served us breads (rolls) out of a used carton box! Nice to see things are better now on your flights.
Actually, a lot of foreigners live in Tashkent. Embassy staff, teachers, NGOs, business people, etc.
