Hi really nice work enjoyed the video would you mind telling the make of lathe and the largest size between points it will turn and you happy with it basically your opinion of it also is that a woodcut chisel you start of with Thanks Jamie
Hello Jamie. The lathe is a Stubby 750 Lathe made in Melbourne Victoria. The largest piece I can turn is 625mm or approx. 24 inches. It is a great machine. The roughing gouge is one that I got years ago from the Men's Shed in Alexandra. They make their own tools.
@@gregstuteshorts6499 thanks for letting me know I will have a look into I live in the UK but I am sure I might be able to import it the size is what I am after is great as at the moment 18" is the max I can get out of my jet which is good but on occasion it would be nice to have a bit extra again thanks again for getting back to me Cheers Jamie
Can I ask a quick question? At 2:34 I saw that wood stop on you on gouge? Could you tell me why is that happening and how to prevent it? (Is it wrong angle of gouge, wood too slow, gouge not sharp enough, trying to cut too much wood at once or something else) I am complete beginner in wood working, tryjng to learn it and this wood stopping is happening to me too often and have no idea how to prevent it
Morning Luka. Yes it can be any of those things. In this case the wood is soft and so I needed to keep tightening the tail stock. It happens more when the wood is square and you are going slow. Once the wood is rounded and the speed is faster you will get less catches. You will always get an occasional catch and it can be that you relax on the angle of the tool, the speed is too slow , the wood has a knot and you are trying to take too much wood off at once or the tail stock has loosen. I like to rough out the wood and then put it into a chuck to finish it. For harder woods I try to get it into a chuck quickly to prevent catches. It has taken years but I now take my time and enjoy the process.
How adorable!!!!! What a great idea!
Thanks for watching Mary.
